Yohan Cabaye looked great for Newcastle yesterday, before he had to be taken off after 74 minutes, but the fans didn’t like that – and it was only 3 minutes after Reading had equalized – and the substitution was greeted with boos from some of the Newcastle faithful.
Yohan Cabaye – best player on the field yesterday
And Yohan had easily been Newcastle’s best player in the game, controlling the central midfield and scoring a wonderful go-ahead goal in the first half directly from a free kick – some skill we had been missing since Yohan became injured back in October.
Alan Pardew cited the booing as perhaps one reason our lads did even worse, as just three minutes later Adam Le Fondre got his and Reading’s second goal (all in a lousy six minutes), to get their first win on the road this season.
This is what the Newcastle manager said after the game:
“‘You could see the extra quality we had on the pitch with Cabaye, and at that point you would like to think we were away from them.” “‘In the second half, we couldn’t get a grip on the game. Reading bossed that period, and as well as we defended at times, we gave away two sloppy goals.”
“We had to take Cabaye off because of an injury, and that caused an adverse reaction in the crowd, and the negativity spread to the team.” “That’s where we are, we can’t get away from that. We need to be able to play through it.”
Newcastle committed the cardinal sin in a 6 pointer – and it’s conventional wisdom that is if you cannot win the game, then at least don’t lose it – but we did lose it, and Reading are now a measly 2 points behind Newcastle, having been in the bottom two all season.
We have to hope we can now keep Colo through the end of the season, and also bring in three or even four good players before the end of the transfer window, if we are to have a decent fighting chance of surviving in the Premier League this season, because this defeat is a very bad one.
And there’s even some good news this morning and Cabaye has not badly injured his groin again, and let’s hope he can line up against Aston Villa a week on Wednesday night – he makes a huge difference to the Newcastle side, as we all witnessed yesterday.
And we also need Steven Taylor back in place of Mike Williamson to shore up our very leaky defense – and somehow we need to get a string of wins asap.
A break of 10 days is both positive and negative – it gives the lads time to get their act together – especially in defense, but the fans have to put with this terrible defeat for 10 long days.

Comment #44I just have no faith that Pardew can turn this around.
I think he’s used all his motivational speeches up and everyone’s heard it before Alan.
Unfortunate for Pardew that Ashley and Llambias pulled the rug from under him in the summer and he lost all the momentum and goodwill he’d built.
Do we pray for survival with Pardew and give him another season next year?
If you have to think about your answer for more than a second then he should probably go now.

Comment #45Santon…Interested in debate today then? Not just wanting to try and blame those that see/saw some promise?
To answer, no of course I don’t. Next question, do I think they played better than us over 90 minutes? Nope. Do I think they took two goals that shouldn’t have occurred? Yep. Do I think we should have taken more of our chances? Sure do.
Listen, I am in no way saying Pardew is a great manager, never have and doubt I ever will. What I have said is that Pardew can do a job for us. He will need to be backed properly, as will any manager. Yes he is defensive, but so are many other managers, some even get listed as replacements on here for Pardew. I genuinly believe many are just seeing we’re in sh*t and are pointing where it’s easiest. Pardew isn’t faultless, don’t get me wrong, but there are bigger issues for me which need sorting first.
I have said before that as and when or if the team turn on Pardew, whether it’s down to him or not, then he’d have to go. That isn’t what I’ve seen to date.

The idea was clearly to bring Perch on, and push Cabaye forward into the #10 position – seeing as he was playing out of his skin.
He made the change after there were a couple of incidents where the ball dropped outside our box from a Reading set piece, and there were multiple Reading players unmarked with a free shot on goal.
Clearly Pardew needed that to stop, since the only threat Reading posed at that point was set pieces.

Comment #50I don’t want him sacked either. The alternatives are not good as Ashley had a bad reputation. I am gonna back him as much as possible at games. The players need us. I enjoy away games more these days as the atmosphere at home is often woeful. One missed pass and there are pricks who start moaning after 1 minute. Either support the team or stay away. Forums are great for venting steam, but don’t do it mid game as the players lack confidence as it is.

Comment #51Laurent Blanc is pie in the sky in my opinion…
You’re best looking at the lower league managers & pick from there lol That’s were we’ll be looking for his replacement.
Malkay Mckay & Tony Mowbary maybe Di Canio would probably be our best bet. Managers on low wages happy to step up a division. Thart will be Ashleys plan in my opinion.

Comment #52Think I’m taking a break from this blog for a while. The quality of comments has dropped considerably, to the point where anyone with a brain to think for themselves gets shouted down.
I’m very unhappy with the current setup, and the only thing I see fixing things is if Pardew and all the coaches are replaced. But it will not happen, so I can’t be bothered to waste my time reading a load of people who think wishing death on managers and players, and calling them gay, is a productive way thing to do with your life.
Ibiza – Enjoy living in that land of sunshine and rainbows (both in your state of mind and in reality! ). It would be nice if there were more people who didn’t view simply enjoying life as a bad thing!

Comment #53I feel a bit bad saying this but if we’re going to go down I hope Ashley blows a load on players this january and they all jump ship in championship and leave Ashley with a hell of a lot more lost than pards ever owed him in gambling debts. Would serve him right for sticking by him. And I hope the guilt of lost millions weighs on pards conscience for years to come. I hope it ruins Ashley. Can’t stand them. Sooner they realise this isn’t a gravy train they can all have a ride on the better. Dekka must love his role under ashley. He’s a freeloader and this is a fun game for them

fair enough,, but why not jonas? then why anita ?
very odd to me
its obvious cabaye is not injured, he jogged off, so why did pardew make up lies to try and cover that,, whay not just say, hey this was the plan
instead he went on the attack towards the fans, who could all see it was wrong,,
and he has done this many times this season and last,,
on the cups,, if he wanted to win over the fans , winning a cup is the way to go,,
we went out to a mid table team in the campionship, and just to prove it was no fluke, poyet did it again

I want an attacking manager. Someone who sets the team out to win.
Even if that’s a defensive, counter-attacking team away from home.
It’s very clever going 1 up and then trying to run the clock down. Some teams learn to do it. With our defensive record this season he must know that we can’t do it.
I think he always planned to take Marv and Cabaye off anyway. It’s the way he plays at 1-0.

If Mike anshley was watching the game and Derek Lambias They must see what is going on hhere. They would NOt have let Chris Hughton Kevin Keegan or Even Our Beloved Bobby Robson Get that Farr . Freddie Shepperd sacked Sir Bobby . We have the Worst manager in years and They say totaly Nothing. if we had the Pie Makers from Blackburn we would be having a new manager ages ago. Thank God Cabaye is Going to be ok. It was good to see some passing on the floor yesterday not just the New Tesco Hoof Balll !!!!!!

Comment #60Heard that there’s a bust up between Jol and Fulham. Time to whip out the chequebook and make a new signing. A 2 – 10 million signing that’ll improve our ENTIRE squad rather than just one area like Debuchy or the rumoured Mbiwa: Martin Jol.
Honestly, any Tom, Dick or Harry would be better than F***dew at this stage.

This crowd have been so patient with Pardew and this team.
They moan at missed passes.
We’ve been watching the same players make the same mistakes week in week out.
Missed passes, out of position, off pace, running offside, not getting back from offside positions.
2 wins in the last 18 matches and yesterday was the first sign of real dissent.
I think the Toon Army have been tremendous in their support.

Comment #64It was obvious from the Gallowgate that bringing perch on for Marvo was to hold onto a 1-0 as Perch went straight into a flat back 5 which left a huge space in front of our defence for Reading to exploit.
Oh for Shola and Gutrot please don’t start them against Villa – waste of space yesterday

Comment #65Ibiza I agree completely. If we had won 4-1 reading couldn’t have complained. There were many positives but Santon cost us the game. His position for the equaliser shows he has learnt nothing from similar goals we have conceded. And for the winner he was awful in the air. Great going forward, shocking defensively. We need 3 defenders asap. Pardew made mistakes but he is no worse than our owner and our squad. We have great players but not enough of them. We have some shockers too.

Comment #73Sensing an even bigger turn in attitude towards Pardew than expected. If he stays he had to talk to the board and get bodies over the line. 2 players are a must but more are needed, we are carrying deadwood again as well. If he cannot get the board to spend than nobody can and perhaps a manager with better motivational skills should come in. Trouble is who would come now? Who is available? Who could put up with Ashley? Not many i feel. Pardew is just an old fashioned manager, we’ve signed champions league player to our credit so a manager with European experience or a foreign manager would be better.
Many fans are unhappy with marveaux being subbed but also anita was questionable when shola and Jonas did so little during the game. We finished the game with the likes of: shola, Jonas, perch, bigi, obertan and Williamson in the team. All fringe players with not enough quality. Shola should have been off for obertan, Anita should have stayed on and Guti should have gone off, he constantly gave the ball away trying to win free kicks.
What’s the deal with a striker on the wing? They are wingers and have no attributes similar to a winger so why do it? He did it at west ham and now he is doing it here. Sign a winger ffs.

Comment #74Can all of the angry crowd who vented their frustrations be wrong in judging that Marveaux shouldn’t have come off? I don’t think so. What’s worrying is that our professional Premier League manager saw it differently… Very worrying.

Comment #77Ibiza@ 16 — Spot on. I thought you were unlikely to bail out. I have had my say on the scenario of players coming back and astute signings and am bored with the repetition. Know is not the time to change the manager because the turmoil would see us relegated. You will not get criticism from me. I thought it was a well thought out, rational balanced critique. Inner tranquility and reason amidst the desolation and any clear thought. Pardew is dammed when he doesn’t speak out and dammed when he does.

Comment #78Charlie – it really was! We’ve shown time after time we are incapable of holding a lead yet he set out to do so against a very poor side who had not won away. He certainly didn’t tell then to go out and grab another at half time to seal the game and his defensive subs sealed out fate.

I am talking about after one or two minutes in a game. And it’s been going on for years. They go to the game to moan. We have had good attendances and that’s been good, but of the 52,000 there are only 2 banks of supporters who are vocal in their support. There are sections of the crowd who get agitated straight away. Cabaye is superb, but if a pass goes astray an almighty groan goes out. It gets right on my tits.
