Newcastle Ready To Make Move For Danny Graham

4:24 pm, Monday, January 21st, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 309 Comments

There are reports surfacing that Newcastle may after all go after Geordie boy Danny Graham, who like Andy Carroll, was born in Gateshead and is an avid Newcastle fan.

danny graham 98

Danny Graham - yes – Newcastle are coming after me!!

Sunderland have been interested in the player, but Sunderland fans are just a little bit wary of signing a Geordie, although manager Martin O’Neill has tried to quell their fears.

But with so little talent available now that we have missed out on Loic Remy – we think Danny would be a solid signing for the Magpies – and of course his heart would be in Newcastle – there’s no doubt about that.

It seems that both Sunderland and Norwich City have already put in £4M bids for the 5’11″ striker, but Swansea would like to get a little bit more for the man they signed for £3.5M from Watford a short  eighteen months ago.

The news is that Alan Pardew has changed his mind about the striker, and Newcastle may now launch a bid for the 27 year-old Gateshead man – now there seems so little striker talent available in January.

Sunderland are in the lead for the striker at the moment, but if Newcastle do make a bid, expect the Geordie lad to push for a move to his home-town club, and we think Danny could help us a lot in the remaining months of the season.

Newcastle will need to move quickly if they are really interested in Danny Graham – and we hope they are.

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa @ MapouYangaMbiwa
I will never forget and Montpellier Paillade! Thank you to MHSC, forever in my heart! A new adventure begins with the Magpies!

I’d take him as an option. He is no worse than say a Best figure, which we have missed this season.

Might not be the Ba replacement we’re all after, but it’s a start…if true.

Seems like Yanga-Mbiwa is done :)

a backup option who can score goals. id take him for cheap.

  • 10 Spreadthetoon // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:28 PM

    Repost
The board have backed the manager, so they MUST follow this up with ACTIONS in the transfer market. We may not agree with their actions, but our season has been so febrile that we must publicly support the manager even if we do not agree with him, i.e. at SJP or @ away games. Lets hope that things turn around….cos’ another Reading result will leave me at a complete loss. Lets hope the players can re-group and get 3 pts from Villa away! HWTL

  • 11 JackButler // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa reported to be having a medical today, everything else said to be already agreed, IF we get him in along with Sissohko we will look far stronger as a squad (until Pardew messes it up ;) )

  • 12 John Tudor // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:30 PM

had his medical at arsenal could not understand the lingo decide that newcastle would be the better option . well i have not seen him .i stand by for pelters

if the hiarchy at newcastle are backing pardew they must spent big on quality and be versatile on the pay structure if indeed he has signed more quality must follow but i will resve jugement till feb

Graham isn’t the winger / striker who can play on the left of a front 3 that we need, but his touch is very good and as a back up striker way better than shola. Maybe 5M could be better served elsewhere though.

    M’Biwa
    Debuchy
    Cabaye

  • 38 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:37 PM

    Roshan

Well the thing about those stats are that they are incredibly misleading. A lofted ball in the air counts as a pass, whereas Mbiwa plays most of his football on the ground which would enable us to build from the back.

  • 39 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:39 PM

FK PARdEW, 1MIL FOR Yoan Gouffran…..

    is a best deal…..

    4 – 5 mil.for dany…..

buy Yoan Gouffran save 3-4mil…. an invest that 3-4 mil on some other players

  • 41 roshan MAGPIE // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:39 PM

I don’t think its his real account

  • 42 bollance // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:40 PM

Despite Graham being a Geordie it would be disappointing to make that signing. Pards said we need pace and power. Is he really the best that is available and at the best price? Would rather a loan with option to buy at end of season for Carroll.. that could be the big transfer deadline day signing!

Our best AC type player is shola who is certainly off the boil. His cameo’s last season saw us hold up the ball up the field and concequently we rack up the wins.

Hooper or Austin would be the best options who are English but price will determine their movement. Neither are target men (?) but both know how to find the back of the net. But they are not French so unlikely!

  • 43 gaz 44 // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:40 PM

the wage structure i totally agree with the lack of movement is disheartening at the moment .. there’s tons of quality players who would sign for under 50k a week.. we need quality in numbers our squad too thin …
first game ive totally blamed pardew know Saturday but im back to blaming the board.. not many could work miracles with this wafer thin squad of quality..
youngsters are great when ya home and dry in a game to bring on for last 20mins.. throwing them into a relegation battle is not What they or we as a club need to get out this mess..
    numbers needed and fast

  • 44 John Tudor // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:40 PM

5m for Danny Graham? When we’re on the verge of signing M’Biwa for around 6m…

    get real Swansea.

    …plus i don’t think he’s good enough.

Some people are right misery guts :)

Things are questionably bad, yes that’s true, but we seem to making shapes in trying to improve this situation and when we get bodies through the door and first teamers back fit and raring to go then perhaps there are brighter days ahead.

So collectively, let’s turn these frowns upside down…

If he does that every week then he’d be better than Berbatov.

  • 60 Zero // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Ibiza excuses wont be needed in time, if he starts winning the wooo the board might finally seee that they need/needed to invest and may help the future.

if he loses he’ll be out a job so no excuses required.

all i can say is how can we praise a manager that has lead us on our worst EPL run in history, a manager that seemingly sacrified a system that was winning to appease one player, who then left. Also ill praise pards when we finally score from a f*cking corner!

  • 65 breno95 // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:51 PM

A big price tag does not guarantee a good player or one that will do well. The Bordeaux lad may prove to be a bargain. Look at Michu at Swansea. Who had heard of him?
As for AP – he won’t be sacked (yet) but if he plays strolla Ameobi again then I would sack him on the spot.
Let’s hope that these latest local press reports are true and this window sees us sign:-
    Haidarra
    Sissoko
    Myanga mbwia
    Debuchy
    Gouffran
Get them all in this week and unleash the fury on villa both on and off the pitch as I’m sure those who travel to villa will give 100 percent.

  • 66 Small World // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:52 PM

I like Danny Graham and from the little I’ve seen he seems an honest pro. Might not be a spectacular signing – he’ll do a job. Think of the likes of Leon Best or Paul Kitson, both bought mid season. That may be doing him a dis-service he may be a cut above, without necessarily being top rank.

HOWEVER: This is possibly not the best of news for NUFC. A few days back, when Mick Lowes made his famous comments about us pursuing a lot more than just 1 or 2 players, he was asked about Danny Graham (I heard the radio broadcast). He confirmed that Graham was indeed on the list but an unlikely signing as he was a long way down. If that is the case, it means we’ve given up the ghost on quite a few.

  • 67 bollance // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:53 PM

    Probably been mentioned before.

But, just goes to show the DL purples theory has been found out this season! (sorry to bing this up again)

With a limited number of prem class players in the squad in addition to having injury prone players like Taylor, Shola, Marveaux and seemingly Tiote (injured / suspended) with have been too light.

Also, anyone noticed the amount of times late on in games we have been losing or drawing that Colo has lashed out? Liverpool, Bolton a few seasons ago, West Brom and Reading on Saturday? There are more, we have lost a lot recently!

Lets hope we will get a squad revamp. Disgree prices are more expensive in January.

    Ba – 7.5 – 10m
    Diame – 3.5m
    Sissoko – 3.5m
    M’Biwa – 6m
    Gouffran – 800k
    Butland – 4m

    The list goes on.

Just remember agents hold clubs over the barrel for ‘free’ transfers so fact is they are never free!!

  • 68 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:54 PM

    Some thoughts, lads.

The bench we have is very limited. If we had Remy on the bench maybe he would of been introduced? Perch was brought on because we couldn’t get a grasp on the game in the second half. We didn’t look good. He was looking to change our approach, switch things up aswell as tighten up. Yes, he is a defensive mid. But would you rather a development player take to the field out of his depth? Our squad is weak. Very weak. He dosn’t have a great deal of quality at his disposal right now. The bench should tell you that.

You can’t blame Pardew for not being psychic? When Marv was hooked, in his mind, we still had Cabaye on the field who was playing very well. He wasn’t to know he was going to start feeling his groin? He shouldn’t even of had to apologise for this. He only did because of the reaction from some parts of the ground, he felt the need to explain.

Ranger, as thick as he is. He has no place in this squad/team. He should be frozen out for his past behaviour. He has been locked in a jail cell more times than he has actually put the ball in the net. His attitude is shocking, i cringe everytime he pulls on the shirt. Its embarrasing for this club to have such a person anywhere near.. He shouldn’t of said what he did, but I tell you what, he was bang on with what he said. These fans should stay at home. They bring nothing to the table behaving like that. Who exactly are they helping/supporting? Why waste the money? Youngsters and whoever coming onto the feild to a rung of boos? Dear me.

The booing was pathetic. Emotional drivel. How on earth fans think that has helped NUFC in anyway is beyond me, no matter who it was directed to. It simply has no place in St James Park. It can’t help the situation in any way. This does not take a genius to work out. If these people feel the need to vent, then try using initiative. Buy a crayola set and a cheap bedsheet and stand outside the ground. It was embarrasing to a lot of people. And it was not everyone booing to anyone who thinks otherwise. Far from it.

Im positive. I hold my stance. For me, Pardew stays. He is not the greatest manager in the world but i believe he is capable giving the right support from upstairs. Im tired of backing a manager on here WHO is being blamed for alot of things he hasn’t had a hand in. He is dealing with a lot of pressure through no fault of his own due to 56 injuries since july (preseason) And no backing from the board last summer. Would we really be where we are if he was backed in the summer? or didnt have the injuries we have had? Pardew is not an excellent manager, he is a manager who did excellent last season and recieved no backing. Could we do better? Who would come here and take the blame for the mistakes and gambles upstairs take? Pardew had nothing to lose coming here. But if we should be anything? It should be grateful. No one with any reputation would touch this job. He is doing the best he can under very awkward circumstances. Thats the reality.

    No continous 1st 11.
Mass amount of injuries and bad timing. Plus suspensions.
Inept squad, no quality in depth with more games to play.
Development players being brought in due to an injury crisis no where near ready.
    Players out of position.
Low morale and confidence due to no backing in the summer all round the club from top to bottom.

Pardew has proven here he can do a job, given the right players at his disposal. Fluke? Don’t make me laugh man. A fluke is one to five games maybe. Not over the course of a season. It might not be the entertaining 90s kk football you desire, but it worked last year and we did very well and progressed massively as a club. I witnessed a spirit and determination at the club which i hadn’t seen for a long time.

Try and keep the faith lads. Bodys are coming back and new players are coming in. Don’t turn on the manager until he fails to deliver with what he SHOULD have at his disposal. I know he ain’t great but I’d have him over Joe Kinnear.

Don’t forget the progress of last season and the problems this season.

Oh and lets not forget pards is the man who changed a winning formula to appease one YES ONE player, who then left us!

  • 77 Blaydon-Toon // Jan 21, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Well I’m feeling slightly more positive toady ….. If we sign mwbia we will look much stronger right away Taylor is coming back so our defence would be as strong as it could be (Collo staying) ! Would take Graham as a stop gap player which would also put pressure on Cisse ! An attacking winger is still needed souls take Scott Sinclair on loan and then the picture looks better all round ! PLEAS MAKE THIS HAPPEN Krul Debuchy Collo Mwbia Santon Ania Cabs Marv Hba Cisse Sinclair ! Great team with Mr T to return Taylor raring to go Graham to come on if needed … This would make me smile :-)

  • 79 breno95 // Jan 21, 2013 at 5:01 PM

    @gonufc
I meant it in the context of the fee paid by Swansea to bring him in. I agree some may have heard of him but not all.
The point is that a big fee does not always get you a great player. Some on here think because a fee is low then the player must be crap. That’s not always the case.

  • 82 Small World // Jan 21, 2013 at 5:04 PM

    @Toon-Prodigy 67

Good post and I agree almost totally with your sentiments, apart from the booing incident at the weekend.

The act of the substitution was clearly booed, not the players. For the first both Marv and Perchy realised this. Marv raising his hands applauding the crowd and Perchy who was clapped on by the guys around me when he took up position. Every man and his dog in the stadium knew exactly who the boos were aimed at and why. After the 1st 2 substitutions there were no more boos until after the final whistle.

Did I boo? No. Did a large number of the crowd? – Yes and they were entitled to. They’d spent the game cheering on the team and suffering the performance of two players in particular who should have been subbed and weren’t. FWIW Neither Shola nor Jonas were booed either.

Danny Graham is not the signing we want to make. Is he going to take us to the next level? I highly doubt it.

Geordie boy or not, he’s not worth £5m and we can get better for that price.

a few thoughts. that was war and peace man!!

God forbid 50, 000 people get emotional when the 2nd bottom club score immediately after both subs. Football is an emotional game. How can you follow football and not be emotional?

Apparently a lot of injuries are of our own making in training, whereas most teams only play passively in training, ie blocking but not full on tackling, Pards allegedly has them going in full pelt.

I’m genuinely excited by the potential signings as we do have an awful lot of genuine quality, willo, simpson, the ameobis and ranger apart. I don’t know if it’s down to Carr or Pardew. Apparently Pardew got Obertan and Elliot. But whoever is getting them or trying to get them, fair play.

Where has the news that AP has changed his mind about Danny G come from ?

I think we ought to be strengthening our 3rd Striker option asap as Strolla is pretty limited tbh and he would be an improvement at that level. So he is an upgrade on Strolla but not a replacement for Ba. All hands to the pump though as it is now and he would be loyal to us as his support for us is well known.

He’s in the same category as Charlie Austin and Hooper for me – eventually a 3rd ranked striker, good cover and would still get 20-30 games a season as well as come on as sub.

Was actually thinking that Gouffran was our next Peter Lovenkrands!

We never did replace best or loven. But now the importance is even greater with Shola out of sorts. However at the start of the season we could not have been thinking to be relying on shola!

Without Ba too and even bringing Ranger shows how desperate we are. However, i do feel this was a message to the board like when we played Leicester at home at start of the Champ season. We needed bodies so hughton brought on Vucick (17) and donaldson (18) at RB.

But then we also need defenders! Think we are having to piece together a list of players with £X.

Bollance – the goof is fairly temperamental. I barely remembered him playing against us – he was subbed half way through second half. We lack impact players and be could with his pace provide something we lack. Agents fees can
be excessive in January. Just want to get bodies of better quality in- the Ameobi alternatives on the bench are an embarrassment. Also Pardew
can then look to closing games down by retaining possession it was never feasible on Saturday because we went long and Shola was ineffectual. Cisse will benefit from a retention game. It will be great to have options. Chatting to someone the other day who is a Crews fan and he was raving over Inman.

In addition to this, sissokho will go to QPR (for the cash) as Harry would buy anyone who we want to sign. Perhaps we should start a Heskey to Newcastle rumour on 50k a week so he can come in and offer him 100k.

Booing gets on my tripe. All it can do is bring negativity lads.

Saying that, im well aware we our passionate people. And football is our major passion. It can spill over. But you cannot get away from the fact it does no good. It should be avoided at all costs in my view while we have players on the park.

    Zero.

Im not a fan of Pardew, i’d love a mourinho. Reality is, we are a long way from getting one. Im well aware of our weaknesses as a team. There is improvment needed all over the park. But I don’t think anyone would be knocking if we replicated last seasons efforts. Pardew has shown he is capapble. He has nothing to prove.

You seem to look for negatives within the squad and football. While i respect your views, i look at the positives. I believe we can get back to last season with the correct backing.

We should have had more out on loan this season. Have any of the youngsters developed this season? Only Bigi. He was the only one with Championship experience last season. If we had had Fergie, Sammi (lost the ball most of the game vs Brighton), Tav, Abeid out on loan to championship this season they would be better for it next season and closer to 1st team.

Needless to say we would have had to bring in lots of players to replace them at the start of the season.

Think the plan is to be in this position eventually but it seems our transfer strategy to buy at a set price limits the numbers we can bring in because only a few players tick all the boxes with the last box being price!

Inman will overtake a lot of our players because of his stint out on loan. Still think Sammi should have been out on loan but he likes the (night)life in newc too much, harsh?

    Rotonda,

If he took over Man UTD, Chelsea or City? Would he win the league, he probably would. My view is that he has had to make do with poor employers, no backing. You can only work with what you have. And he hasn’t had a great deal of help from upstairs. Actually, thats a bit of an understatement.

We definetly progressed last season as a team and club. I want that back. Changing our manager cannot help that. Especially at the minute.

The reason he is still in a job is because he simply is not to blame for our current predicament. He is not blameless in all aspects. Iv witnessed alot of frustrating decisions aswell. We know he is no mourinho though. saying that, he is not to blame for our position in the league. This for me points to a lack of backing. A ridiculous gamble in the summer which has left us very vulnerable. I’ll judge Pardew when we have a fully fit squad. And the players brought in who we should have got in the summer.

I’ll let you know when I have lost all faith in Pardew ;)

Like I have said today, by taken an attack minded player of he invited them to attack us more

He createts nervous tension at the ground when he does that as all the fans have seen what happens before many times

Shola isn’t fast so carnt break quick

  • 159 Newcastle for alltid // Jan 21, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Signing Danny Graham right now wouldn’t be too bad. He’s not Van Persie, but he’s proven that he’s able to score goals in the Premier League. He probably had a better season last year, but I think it’s mostly the arrival of Michu that has been keeping his goalscoring quiet this season. As a backup for Cissè or used alongside him in a 4-4-2 he would be great, in my opinion. Better than Shola anyway. Shola’s got 41 PL goals since 2000, Graham’s got 15 since 2011. A least he would score goals if chances were created for him.

As for other signings I really hope we can clinch the Yanga-Mbiwa deal as he’s a very good player from what I’ve seen/heard. Haidara would be interesting competition on the left back, especially if you consider Santons weak defensive positioning and tackles. Sissoko I would sign in a heartbeat, as he would be a powerful presence, and a big prospect. Gouffran is a player I hope we pursue, as he could add pace and creativity to our team. Thauvin I’ve not seen enough of, but from what I’m told he’s a big talent. Sign him up. We need another CB as well, though. Especially if Colo leaves.

Earlier on today, when it was posted that Paul Tisdale was going to be the next manager,I thought who the hell is he and decided to check him out. The Exeter fans seem to think he is very good. Somebody posted that in the managerial merry go round at the top level it is the same old names that get fired and hired and the majority of them achieve nothing -so giving an unknown is sometimes worth the chance (obviously a gamble here if he fails -especially at a PL side – equals millions lost).
Reading further I stumbled onto an article by Steve Perryman about Tisdale – he thinks he is the best ting since sliced bread. (For those who don’t know Exeters history -they went bust a few years ago and are now owned by the fans and they’ve got no money).
Exeter seem to get by with bringing on youngsters/players who other clubs had no interest in, them bringing them on for sale -all with basically no money to do it -they have raffles and things like that to get money for the club. It then struck me that this bloke would be Ashleys type of man -working with next to nothing finance wise, developing players and selling them on – fits Ashleys model very nicely. But who knows whether he’ll end up here.

  • 162 Ian Toon // Jan 21, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Bollance- Having such a small squad has inhibited Pardew’s hand on loaning out players. I have to admit that the lack of progresss of the under 21′s has been a surprise to me. I thought they would benefit from Europa experience. Fergi has performed very poorly and I would lend him out to get over his nervousness when playing on the big stage. You can see from the established players that he has a way to go because they appeared reluctant to pass to him. Sammy has been getting into bad company of late mixing with Ranger on the quayside. He has looked as unfit as his brother and should go out on loan as I can’t see him making a worthwhile contribution to us retaining PL status.. Come the end of season I can see a purge of a good number. It will be good to have a bench full of players who can make a difference. Fingers crossed. When I buy I get one free I usually end up throwing out the free one because it’s way past the sell by date. A bit like Abeid, Gosling, Amalfitano et al. Abeid impressed so much pre season. What do I know!!

I’ve been going to Carlisle Utd games for years and I remember watching Danny Graham playing for them. I always thought he looked like a decent player. He scored a few goals aswell! I think his record was about 1 goal every 3 games, which is better than anyone we’ve got!

  • 176 nick_9 // Jan 21, 2013 at 6:12 PM

Prodigy – I hope they do, as well all know a couple more players in the summer summer and we may have managed much better.

If we add four players of a decent quality then we look ok, obertan and Jonas can still make an impact as subs. Bigi and perch can do a job. If we can sign the likes of mbiwa, gouffran and sissoko for ten million it would help us massively.

I certainly would begrudge Ashley a quiet summer window if he signed 3-5 players now and did everything to guarantee safety.

  • 180 Robby Bobson // Jan 21, 2013 at 6:17 PM

The interest of Danny Graham makes alot more sense with the signing of Gouffran.

Instead of getting a striker/winger, get a striker and a winger.

Graham is underrated, if rooney did that little flick for swanseas third goal the weekend it would be raved about all season. He wont create chances for himself, but give him a chance, he’ll put it away.

Will be disappointing if Gouffran is our only answer, so really hope this has some legs.

  • 185 Ian Toon // Jan 21, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Mister Tuff – I am sure you mean well but Tisdale would be on a steep learning curve at the expense of our Premiership status. Far better to rely upon the reigning PL manager of the year. Are you as thrilled as I am at the prospect of acquiring further top draw players to aid the cause. Finally it appears that Pardew’s message has got through to Ashley. Somebody writing today pointed out that we really know how to flirt with success. Newcastle have qualified for the Champions League three times during the existence of the Premier League. This is more than Spurs, Everton and Man City. We’ve finished second twice and reached two cup finals. It’s hard for fans to see the bottom fall out of our world in 8 months but I can see better days ahead with an enhanced squad . No excuses acceptable if Ash flashes the cash is my view. That will be the time to judge the manager. Alan Scott Pardew this is your time!!

  • 186 masterp1983 // Jan 21, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Ibiza – great article, joe kinnearesque.

Robby bobson – just gouffran would be disappointing, I would certainly take both him and graham though for a combined 5-6 million. That would give us some depth and wouldn’t break that bank. Wouldn’t want us to spend much more on graham though given we paid around the 5m mark for most of our international players from abroad.

On another note, Simpson, Xisco and harper all leave in the summer knocking over 5.5 mill off the annual wage bill. That gives us some roof for new recruits and saves a bit for players who aren’t used or who have been replaced.

Robby Bobson- historically the best English Goalkeepers have started off in the lower leagues. Butland looks good to me playing in a poor side. Also if we are to loan him back that could be to our advantage if we seek to cherry pick players in the future. Something Arsenal and
West Ham have looked to do with Leyton orient and Colchester in recent times.

  • 205 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 21, 2013 at 6:38 PM

Prodigy….Just reading up on the guy. An interesting character. Looking at his Wiki page, at the bottom there is a mention about MBwia:

“On July 28, 2012 Nicollin mocked A.C. Milan’s Vice president and CEO Adriano Galliani calling him Kojak (bald-headed protagonist from the 1970s American cop drama) for offering him a €6 million offer for Montpellier HSC’s captain and star player Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
“ ” Kojak never called me,” Nicollin told Canal+. “This makes me laugh. Those guys just got out of bed. They sold a guy for €45 million euros (Thiago Silva[disambiguation needed] to PSG) and they want to steal one of ours.”

“If they offered €25m or €30m then fair enough, but from what I understood, they merely come in with €5m or €6m. (Galliani should) go play in movies and not hassle us.”

    “Louis Nicollin” [12][13]”

Think about the times pardew stated before the season started that it was ok and no more signings were needed?

Yes pardew has had bad luck on injuries but the way the team has been playing all season is ridiculous and his decisions have been terrible!

Here are a list of a few things that have annoyed me about him…

    Not rotating the two dembas.

    His defensive line ups.

Not playing players in their preffered positions.

His terrible tactics (defend and hoofball).

Playing average players (willo & shola).

    His clueless sutitutions.

His interviews after the games which are complete bullsh*t!

Blaming fringe players when lets not forget, the only cup competition we are still in is the europa league and who has played most of them games?

The other reason why i think weve done well in that is because we played cisse in the lone striker role without greedy ba next to him and more creativity on the pitch

In my opinion anyone could of done a better job than this cluless c**t.

  • 211 Robby Bobson // Jan 21, 2013 at 6:43 PM

Ian Toon – its not that hes in a lower league, its that he hasnt done much.

My mate is a birmingham fan and i often go st andrews with him, says butland really isnt all that and from what ive seen he still has ALOT to learn and constantly makes mistakes and csts his teams goals. Plus his kicking makes tim krul look like yohan cabaye.

4 mill isn’t alot i suppose, but he was one of these players earmarked as an england player at a very young age without doing much, and suddenly they get alot of undeserved attention (see jordan henderson).

I would go for either Danny Graham or Shane Long because both are great grafters and would take a lot of pressure of our back four.

My worry is that Pardue is clueless he would have Messi and Ronaldo on the bench for Shola and Jonas.

Why hasnt he been sacked-His long ball tactics will take us down-The reason he wont drop Williamson is because he will have no one to aim for with the corners and free kicks

  • 229 geordiejamie89 // Jan 21, 2013 at 6:55 PM

Yes please! Geordie players, especially talented goalscorers always welcome. Okay, he may not score as often as Demba Ba, but he may also stay for the rest of his career if he does well. Also, signing a cheaper striker in January, would set Newcastle to sign Aubemeyung (however you spell it) in the summer. He is absolutely rapid and a good striker, I’m surprised he hasn’t been snapped up by a top club yet. Danny Graham would be a great signing to get us over the line, with Mbiwa and Sissoko or similar player.
And if Newcastle sign the four players over the Jan transfer, then that’s probably five times better than most fans would have thought. I thought we’d sell Ba then come up with excuses for not replacing him, like Newcastle usually do. I can’t wait for next season, no Europa League and a fit squad we’ll do much better. Probably no Hatem or Fabricio but the money gained from Hatem would be enough to sign some talented players, even if we will all miss Hatem.

  • 230 Mister Tuff // Jan 21, 2013 at 6:57 PM

Ian Toon @183 evening Ian -I posted the bit about Tisdale as I could see why cheapskate El Gordo would be attracted -but agree that for us it would be too much of a financial gamble -probably El Gordo realises that., but if we survive -who knows what he will do in the summer -just an interesting potential angle.
It does appear that we have been working behind the scenes with replacements and hopefully my anticipated “half team” will start to trickle in during the coming days. I am still waiting for a possible surprise/higher quality signing -and live in hopeful expectation of this.- would give the squad a tremendous boost. Jurys’ out whether your man Percy Parsnip is up for the job -50/50 shout I suppose. I have studied Parsnips career -he in my opinion is too arrogant and not to be trusted -if you know about his history he (alledgedly) committed the worst sin as a manager -which puts him in the not to be trusted bracket -then there’s the super injunction.. Has he changed – I don’t know.
With reference to the beating Tudor got earlier on I agree fully with your input. was it transfer and torque -really they should not have pursued him and cast doubt upon his health. Typically stent fitting is a minimally invasive procedure and patients can be up and running a very short time afterwards, sometime just a matter of hours. However, sensibly the lads have all called a truce which is mature. Clearly Tudor is an older fan and some of his one liners are funny -equally half are not.
Tudor -you need to up your game to match my jokes.

    Nick,

We should have out mee signings in by the villa game. Our squad will look alot better. Its Ben Arfa i want back though more than anything right now. Cabaye and Ben Arfa being out has been painful for me. We are a total different unit without them in the starting 11. Now we should have the quality in depth by the time Villa comes around.

At the moment i’v got quite a positive outlook, its all determing on this window though. I am confident they will do what is necessary though.

Does anyone think we (toon fans) rate HBA higher than anyone else?

There is no doubt that he is one of, if not the most skillful player in the PL in my opinion. For me, he is also someone who seems to live for football.

However, he is not a guaranteed starter from France and none of the big clubs have shown a genuine interest.

My sense is that being outrageously skillful on the ball is not enough.

Yes if we go down he will go, most of them will but, would we really get 15m or more for him?

    P,

I think he is good enough for a top 4 team. I think we are bery lucky to have him.

  • 245 nufc_eire // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:07 PM

If we sign haidair, mbiwa, sissokho, gouffran this window I think we can call that a successful window. I do like the idea of signing Jack Butland for 4m and then loaning him out for the rest of the season.

Simpson will prob be a deadline day 1-2m pound signing for someone which might leave us short at right back. I think Colo will be persuaded to stay till the end of the season and then he will be let go/sold for a cheap amount.

If we concentrate our summer spending on an excellent, tall, pacey centre half (colo and mbiwa together would be murdered by a team like stoke) such as Alderweireld or Sakho. We would also need a marquee winger/striker (Mertens), young striker to act as cover (Guidetti) and young cover for right back (someone like Clyne) . Also we should sell tiote in the summer before his value drops anymore and then replace him with a young box to box midfield (cant think of any at the moment!)

So our 25 man squad would look like for the new season

    GK: Krul, Butland, Elliot
Def: Debuchy, Alderweireld, Mbiwa, Santon, Clyne, Taylor, Willo, Haidari
Mid: Sissokho, Anita, Cabaye, Marveaux, Perch, Bigirimana, (New box-to-box)
Att: Benarfa, Mertens, Cisse, Gouffran, Obertan, Guidetti, Sammy Ameobi

Although this will NEVER happen. We’ll prob not sign anyone tho and will be in championship nest season

  • 246 Conaldo (The Wizard...Also Bestest Friends With Paul Scharner) // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Realistically, if things go our way, we could be looking at the following by the end of the window:
    Out: Ba

In: Debuchy, M’Biwa, Sissokho, Haidara, Thauvin, Goufrann and/or Graham.

    Received: 5m
    Spend: roughly 20-22m
    Net spend 15 mil.

That would be a fantastic window and would show that the board do care, if a window late.

I still have no fears about relegation, although I am fully aware it could happen. We just need a little run and all of a sudden things look a bit better. Starting with a convincing win over Villa.

Hopefully, most of the players are “Over the line” by then.

Oh. And I hope I didn’t sound too much like Kets there.

P – he was third higher scorer for us last season despite ony playing from jan onwards regularly. He is third highest scorer this season behind cisse and Ba and has been out for a fair few games. He is the most creative players we have and as Newcastle fans we want to be entertained again. Perhaps if the team was rounded with good quality back up we would hype up players like Ben Arfa an santon as much. I will say I’m a massive fan of Ben Arfa, marveaux and santon because of their flair. I love seeing players beat a man

  • 249 Robby Bobson // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:10 PM

The signing of Mapou will replace the only english guy in our strongest 11!

And another thing, if we get Sissoko, surely Simmo can be sold for a few million end of the window?

Frees up Anita to play full back for extra cover.

  • 252 LGFUAD21 // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:10 PM

Everybody has bee sat on here trying to diagnose what went wrong. Tbh it’s probably a combination of things.

We returned after summer with Ba hanging over us while rumours of him unsettling the squad.

Pardew appeased Ba and was eventually left with no choice but to carry on doing so given the form.

Cabaye was knackered from the euros. And tiote after injuries and acon disappointment.

Meanwhile it can’t have helped Simmo knowing that he’d had his best season and a solid one for any rb yet was not getting a new contract and that debuchy was preferred. Then imagine having to read all about Cabaye and benny wanting debuchy to come. Professional or not that’s going to put you right off.

Started the season mediocre and without new signings.

Injuries hit and younger players probably felt that no one trusted them to step up while others were thrown in the deep end.

Then colo gets a red card and we loose the next three games putting us in a slump.

The crowd boos. Even if its just the manager the team still feels it.

Pardew becomes desperate for wins he puts out very attacking teams agains manure and arsenal. We play well the for majority our players put their all in but nothing seems good enough.

Pardew becomes so determined on getting any points and after leaking some goals resorts to negative cautious tactics. Knowing that we have lost our main goal scorer and our magician is out with injury. While our most influential player is also out, it seemed a wise move.

Pressure and low confidence mean players are not playing fluid football. They show fear and it results in sloppy play. So pardew resorts to hoof ball. Players don’t like this, fans don’t either, and it doesn’t work.

A lack of signings means pardew is unable to do much but field players out of position, and even worse, unable to add needed energy to games with enough skill to see us out or come back.

Interesting translation of the French article posted above by Mr T @ 182

Personally I have no problems with 6-7 players from Ligue1 coming to Toon

“That are modes, there were Arsenal, today is Newcastle, tomorrow it will be Liverpool and Chelsea. “At the beginning of January, the agent Christophe Hutteau rebelled against the will of some Newcastle players favor other French clubs. Yes, Newcastle is becoming the new preferred exile players in Ligue 1. If their Loic Remy has finally stood up, Moussa Sissoko, Massadio Haidara and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa are on track to join the Magpies this winter, in the wake of Mathieu Debuchy.

But what they please both Newcastle city a little sad northern England, and especially now plays club maintenance? For most, the dream of playing in the Premier League takes over the play for a club fighting for the title. Newcastle is also known to go by offering remuneration wage well above what they could earn in other championships. By drawing regularly L1, the Magpies dug a real groove. No thanks to Alan Pardew, the typical English coach who does not know much about our league, but thanks to Graham Carr, chief recruiters for Toons. It is he who walks the French stadiums and unearth pearls.

Especially successful in its recruitment Newcastle made in France due to the decline in the value of our players in the eyes of the biggest clubs in Europe. Penalized by the poor performance of the national team, our international no longer courted by Barca, Real Madrid, Manchester United or Chelsea, but by Newcastle, QPR, Rubin Kazan Fenerbahce. Therefore, Newcastle appears as the least bad destination for players seeking England and are reassured by the presence of elements such as Cabaye and Ben Arfa, symbols of some success in the North of England. Except that this year, the challenge will not get a European place but to stay in the first division. Is cause misunderstanding among fans who would like to see their idols shine under lights much more prestigious.”

a little sad city in NE England :)

  • 254 Williamsonsuks // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:11 PM

Sad state of affairs when we are hoping our team doesn’t qualify for europe, but that’s the way it is.
I’d sign Graham. He’s basically screamed come get me. All geordies know Ashley makes scrooge look like santa, (cheesy I know) yet he still wants to come. Guarantee he’d chase every ball and score a few aswell. He’d wear his heart on his sleeve and would be a good link up player for Cisse.
Getting to close to the end of the window get him in. Bents scoring record is quite good, take him on loan (if possible). He’d definitely score a few aswell.

Conaldo – I think a 15m net spend would see us about right and would stretch quite far with the player you mentioned. Gouffran available for 1m, sissoko or Diame 3-3.5m, mbiwa 6.5m.

I’d love to see four new players come in and would equally love it if we sold or gave away some deadwood to reduce net spend

  • 261 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:19 PM

    Yo Yo,

Good points. I too think Cabaye was down and out of form, low on morale with the debuchy saga. I’d be gutted if my best mate was going to come then didnt. His performances reflected that.

Also note. How quick he was brought in this window. I really feel the strongest point of it was to appease Cabaye. It has certaintly lifted him judging on his recent performances after a long lay off.

  • 262 LGFUAD21 // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:20 PM

Point is you can really put you finger on one point.

But on pardew. His greatest asset to us last year was his ability to fire up the team and he has. Failed to do it this year.

Last year he breathed confidence, hope and unity into the team.

This year he showed no guts with Ba, stubbornness, conservatism and oozes pessimism.

we would not be in this situation with more signings but that wouldn’t solve the problem. It’d just give more options and a stronger team to deal with this. But we still would be a good team. Just a good group of players.

But that won’t correct the fact that pardew has failed to fire his players up, which when paired with his tactical shortcomings has led us here. Even with injuries and perches and willow we should have enough experience and quality to achieve a mid table finish. We should be able to compete just not contend.

Pardew has failed to manage cisse appropriately, he has failed to manage obertan. Two players with quality but victims of confidence.

He has failed to manage Ba, he has failed to manage jonas. A team spirit killer and a misused and compacting engine.

  • 277 LGFUAD21 // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Firing pard’s now will not help.

Firing him in the summer will though. When we have hopefully survived we will have a better chance to attract a better manager ( Benitez will be available, he’s a s0lid guy with a good knowledge of the game and experience of European football)

It’s never been a secret we chose the wrong guy to build a team.

With a cb in place we will have 11 purples. That’s enough to play themselves.

But without pardew firing up the team it is our job to do that and I must say, as fans we are absolutely failing. Our anger and numb showing at games may be directed at pardew and the owners but the team will feel they are responsible for th performance on the field.

The best thing we can do is return to being the best fans in the world instead of being the whiny, over ambitious, overly demanding, negative bunch we have become.

I really wish I could get to more games because I would be in that minority willing not wishing the team on.

  • 278 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 21, 2013 at 7:29 PM

NorthernIrishToon – for me it picks itself and looks a very strong attacking side. Tricky on either wing and steel in the middle. I agree about marveaux and Ben Arfa though. I feel like marveaux will be dropped and Jonas will stay in the team once Benny is back. I think that formation could work though with coaching, tiote or Anita should stay back and cover if a full back progresses into an attacking position. Tiote has no need to progress sometimes and he rarely tests the keeper with his shots.

Beattie – looks legitimate, hope noboy hijacks this one.

Lgfaud21 – do you think Benitez is the type of manager to accept signing your targets patiently over a period of time? I think he would have demanded a cb in the summer and probably have fallen out wish Ashley.

Under sheperd we probably would have signed Remy for 100k a week and signed some centre back at the clubs expense. I like how we get quality international players for so little with carrs scouting and whoevers negotiations but i wish we had a bigger transfer kitty each window. I understand Ashley doesn’t want to spend his own money and probably doesn’t like us fans enough to do so but 10m each window would stretch quite far, the sooner out revenues increase (next season?) the better.

Come on Newcastle get these players over the line, a late push for danny graham would be fine by me he is a step- up from shola and he would crawl across the tyne bridge on broken glass to get his chance, Yang mbiwa is looking nailed on but until hes got the shirt in his hands for the picture then we will still be on tenterhooks with that one.

Sissoko looks a real grafter and with not a small amount of skill and technique as well, gouffran has scored decent goals all season and looks good if we can prize the lad away from bordeaux, i personally dont believe the 750k patter from SSN.

Jack butland is a massive talent, a goalie and maybe not a prooroty but it can do no harm, remember Krul saved us many many points last season, its a vital area to have top class back up. love to see harper get a job on the coaching side at the toon hes been fantastic for us.

All of course pie in the sky at the moment but i do believe players are strongly on the verge of joining us.

I have had a right royal pop at AP over the last 5/6 weeks, he is a fella who just cannot take responsibiulkity over desisions he has made, but then comes out and says he can take criticism on the chin but blames the wrong things for his actions.

The regime at the toon made the mistake not to push forward and go for that champs league place, but no one expected the almighty collapse o0f the team around us, AP wanted the first 11 kept together, they were, injuries of course but all teams get them, maybe ours have been worse???? The regime have held there hand up about that failure in the summer , it has hurt us all, but for three years we have been on a continual forward roll which has came to an almighty stop, a massive effort has to be put in by all and new players hit that ground running fast.

My feeling on the matter is that we missed a massive chance in the summer but non of this was expected even so, im still feel our squad overall is good enough not to but anywhere near were we are, as the europa campagn has shown we have got through that with the so called fringe players, and they did real canny in my view, AP has put the blame on other playersw door when the usual suspects in the prem we all know who they are have got away scot free, and i have it on very goosd authorty mthat he never bollockdsa senior player in the dressing room but has a go at the players he knows he can get AWAY WITH IT WITH AND THAT FOR ME STINKS.

i still lay the blame fore were we are at AP.He picks the team he picks the formnations and tactics, not one goal from 250 plus crosses is embarrasing beyond belief, stragnen,t he needs to sort it asap.

Its a sad state of affairs when we have to Google Players that NUFC are linked with as no-one has heard of them! It all points to Penny-Pinshing and Greed. Take QPR as a prime example they spent big last season under Hughes and again with Redknapp. Yet this crowd nothing and they wonder why they are in a Relegation struggle, they have basically the same squad that won the Championship, with a few additions added the likes of Williamson,Ameobi,Simpson,Ranger, jonas,Raylor No sell on value un-like Carroll and Nolan Enrique that’s why the Championship beckons!

Mister Tuff- Good evening. Just had my portion of parsnips in a winter stew. There is always additional pressure on managers once they spend money. Let’s hope the summer can be a time to look forward from a position of strength. On your other point i appreciate your support of my comments. I think you will recall that i had previously raised with Ed the question of bloggers with mental health and learning difficulties. It is always difficult when ones personal life and blog life merge. It would be easy for both to merge for personal short term gain but at the expense of potential long term pain. You just have to control your ego. I personally believe that opinions should stand up on there own without resorting to playing the personal experience or age card. Look at us, were at the opposite end of the spectrum in so many ways. like obesity and anorexia{ not that i am implying anything} We fundementally have disagreed on almost everything!! I feel it’s best not to have preconceptions but to judge on merit and take a view. Naturally knowledge and experience will be factored into ones thinking. It is more fun having a mental picture of posters in your mind when engaging. Anyway just my simple thinking.
As far as your postings, it for me is always a good sign when i have
to read them twice to derive the full benefit-LOL Jokes what jokes!
Upon reflection, i am pleased you were released from the chain gang.
Be of good jeer, erm i mean cheer, Ash is going to splash the cash,
allegedly. I bet you were one of those booing and singing ” You don’t
    know what your doing”.

Guys, please do not get too excited about this chap Gouffran, he will not be the answer to get us out of the predicament we are in now. Danny Graham may not be either, but for me, as a local lad, he would surely do anything he could, and if need be run through his granny to score for the Toon, hence gets my vote. Gouffran is exactly what the fat man wants, a cheap young prospect. This particular gamble (in our current plight) on young shoulders, in a stronger league than he has been used to, is doomed.

    Memo to Alan Pardew.
    re: Set Pieces.
If you always do what you have always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always had. In other words, if for every free kick, you keep pinging the ball to that waste of space Willo, you will achieve absolutely nothing. Wake up and smell the coffee you muppet, start ‘Coaching’.
