Newcastle have had an initial bid of €750K for 26 year-old Bordeaux striker Yoan Gouffran turned down by his French club – but news today that Newcastle will go back in with an improved offer for a player who becomes a free agent in June, and it looks possible that Newcastle could get three players in this week – but there are worrying reports coming from the London press that Arsenal are moving in for 23 year-old French International defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – will he sign for Newcastle?
We simply don’t know if the reports from London are true or not – but the news yesterday was positive that we will sign Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa today after he undergoes a medical although there are some reports that Arsenal officials have contacted Montpelier to inquire about the versatile defender.
But when you have slumped like Newcastle have since November it’s much harder to attract good players to the club, and we have to hope the reports of Arsenal’s interest are not true – or that they are too late.
Newcastle will sign 20 year-old Nancy left back Massadio Haidara today, and it looks like he will get a five and a half year contract – but if the Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa deal doesn’t go through it will be even more frustrating for Newcastle fans – after what happened to Loic Remy only last week.
Newcastle’s big advantage with Yanga-Mbiwa is that he will be promised a first team position at Newcastle, which he probably wouldn’t get at the Gunners, and he is also due to arrive in Newcastle this morning. The Frenchman was supposed to arrive at Newcastle yesterday but didn’t – but that was because of the difficult traveling conditions with the snow (we hope).
Newcastle need to get him signed up before Arsenal can cause any mischief – and his signing for Newcastle for €8M will now come as a huge relief for our fans – if it happens.

By all accounts Mbiwa has already signed the contract, only clause is that he must pass the medical – if Arsenal want him they’ll have to buy him from us
2 JackButler // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:03 AM
Am I the only one that is seriously pi**ed at Colo for putting us in the situation???
He is supposed to be a professional footballer after all and that should be on and off the field especially as he’s out captain. If we were comfortable in the league then it would still be a massive blow but seeings as we are hovering over the relegation places is actions and the result of them and reprehensible.
Given that any new defender will need time to settle, Saylor spends most of the season on the treatment table and Williamson is well, useless, we need our captain more than ever

Agree Butler. I’ve lost all respect for the guy. Him and his dad are taking the piss.
5 hdavid23 // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:06 AM
this is getting ridiculous… i think there should be a rule that after two clubs have agreed a fee, no other one can make a move for the player, unless the player has already refused to sign the contract…
6 89Norcal // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:06 AM
JackButler, I’m pretty annoyed with it as well, but I’ll restrain myself until I see whether Colo actually leaves or stays.
As for Mbiwa, I don’t think Arsenal will come up with a silly wage offer like QPR in an effort to steal him, sounds like he’ll still come here.
7 Dannyo // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:07 AM
Arsenal are not in for Mbiwa, not now anyway, the Le10Sport picture of todays paper was photoshopped.
8 colwell // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:08 AM
Why could it not be Willo that was home sick/cheating on his wife or whatever other bull-shit story the Colo’s want to make up.
9 Transfer Sage // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:09 AM
Jack Butler
Spot on. The way colo’s dad is going on makes it sound like he just wants to go back home and play for his dad’s team. No sign of personal problems.
The way I see it, the personal problems are just that he wants to play back home and get out of newcastle. Nothing has been said about illness in family etc, that was just a story made by media, no actual quotes from anyone.
He needs the captaincy taken from him and then to be shown the door but only if the right fee is rec’d.
10 Markaccus // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:09 AM
No, Jack, you’re not the only one whose urine is boilled by the situation that colo has put us in. It’s highly unprofessional, although it’s the first time he’s done owt like it. You are not alone
11 santonthenewmaldini // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:11 AM
Yeah I am disappointed in Colo as well
If his wife is ill fair enough but the fact his father and San Lorenzo mention nothing about her illness except that they want him to leave and says he wants to leave
Might be better if he goes if he really wants to go that badly but the Toon must get money back for him , we are not a charity
Him and Mbiwa at the back would be great but equally him and Taylor would be brilliant as well
Hope we get another centre back if he goes like Mirin or Okore

We are not very quick at closing these deals are we? this could have been sealed Sunday! (NUFC in a nutshell)
13 Santon03 // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:11 AM
Ibiza – sorry repost
Well.. If I were Ashley, I will say to san lorenzo : “You are asking me to give away 8 million, what can you give me in return? 10% of your shares?”
14 geordiesteve520 // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:12 AM
I also cannot understand why we are not reporting San Lorenzo, surely this equates to ‘tapping up’. It’s the bloody Falklands all over; we know it’s outs and they think it’s theirs!
15 GeordieDan // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:12 AM
Don’t believe that Arsenal hi-jacking rumours this time.
Arsenal have Vermaelen ,Koscielny, Mertesacker already and don;t seem to be after another centre-back.
Plus dirty ‘Arry isn’t Arsene Wenger.
I’m still hopeful we’ll get Mbiwa and Haidara in today but not counting on either until its on the official pages this time.
16 Edmond // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:12 AM
I don’t think arsenal will go in for M’biwa, they have a strong defence and im sure we’ve wrapped it up, can’t wait to see our squad on feb 1st, keep the faith!!
17 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:12 AM
We could always put Colo up for sale – he’s probably worth in the region of £8M (good riddance I’ll say

18 goldenbolux // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:13 AM
sorry for the repost
but everyone and i mean everyone inside the club and around it know the truth
stop the sympathy now
“I think this thing with colo is pathetic
Everyone knows
And I mean everyone that his wife caught him with his girlfriend from crammy
Anyone that gives him any sympathy needs to jog on
He played about and got caught
She has gone back to Argentina and left him with the kids
This isn’t a recent development, this is the reason why he has been crap too this season. He got caught and obviously the pressure of dealing with it has got to him.
Come on though, lets be honest he should just man up.
If you play around and get caught you need to deal with it and get your dad to make some pathetic excuse for you.
Personally I would rather he be gone if he is gonna act like this.
Sorry for this rant but we need to stop all this sympathy crap
If any of us got caught would we get any of this sympathy”
19 colwell // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:13 AM
Colo has never been Captain material, he doesn’t even organize the defense let alone the team. My choice would be Cabaye everything about him shows he is a Captain in waiting.
20 PontiusLee // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:13 AM
definitely do not like the situation at hand.
the board at newcastle better realize how dumb we looked by losing out on remy and better seal this deal with mbiwa ASAP.
on our deficient striker role.
lets try to get an ivorian, its tiote’s friend!!! french speaking, looks like a class player, strong, good control, and YOUNG.

24 jimmysmith // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:15 AM
Apparently Graham Carr is to all intents and purposes scouting for every professional football club in the world while exclusively on our payroll.
Another spectacular coup for us. Kudos.
25 Markaccus // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:16 AM
If we do sign goufran as a wide forward, who else should we get. I imagine it would have to be a squad player to back up cisse? Graham? Bent? (nooooo)

You having a panic ed???
Nothing to see mate. Pure journo rubbish again.
27 sirtoongospel // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:17 AM
JB no you aren’t. He has been a great player but to let his dad treat us like this and try to instigate a move is wrong. He has been a poor captain anyway but these latest things mean that even if he sees the season out, he CANNOT be our captain. Steven Taylor and Cabaye should be the 2 in contention. Cabaye might be a good choice though.
Hopefully these 2 sign today and its onwards and upwards. If colo doesn’t want to be here then he needs to go. Just give us 5 million on his way out. Buy Olsson from WBA and we will be so much stronger.
Can you imagine a team where there are genuine options on the bench? Despite his mistakes, Pardew deserves 18 committed and quality premier league players every match day.
28 rainrix // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:18 AM

Does anyone know if we are moving in for Sissoko? SSN reporting he’d prefer us over QPR.. We spend to much time concentrating on getting a player in we should be getting more now not long left
34 JackButler // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:21 AM
If San Lorenzo came in and wanted to buy him to take him then fair enough, I could understand that but to try to instigate a situation where he can join them for next to nothing is unethical and totally unprofessional.
I’d make him stay until the summer and then transfer list him, selling him to the highest bidder
35 BelfastMagpie // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:22 AM
I’ve heard on talksport & a few other places, the personal problems is bollox. Just a excuse to get out of his contract. If he wants to move so much, he’ll play for free & they can give us his wages as a fee.
36 Transfer Sage // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:22 AM
By all accounts colo is a great captain off the field, heard a lot of good things on radio newcastle that he keeps morale up off the field and organises things like team bonding etc.
I’d say on the field though he isn’t a good captain….but he is a very good player.
37 colwell // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:23 AM

38 Ian Toon // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:24 AM
I find it hard to take a view because I don’t know why he wants to leave! But the matter needs to be resolved and quickly. Total focus has to be on getting the players in who are going to join the squad that will avoid relegation. If he is going to be a dissenting figure then let’s get him out.
39 hoppernufc // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:25 AM
We all know if colo leaves either jonas or Ameobi will be captain, our two worst players! A captain needs to be someone who leads by example and can grab the game by the scruff of the neck and inspire his team, pardew just picks the most senior players to be captain even if there sh*t
40 JackButler // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:25 AM
TBH I don;t see any of our players being that vocal on the field which is a problem, but taking into account that he’s a guaranteed starter Cabaye would be the obvious choice for me as captain
41 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:25 AM

Santon…Not a bad idea, not sure what the point of having shares of a club who have no money for a transfer in the first place is though.
Hopefully are will become clear today, although I think the only clear thing will be whether he’s staying or going, not the reasons why.

@42 did you not see the one arriving at 10:45?
48 TorqToon // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:29 AM
Edmond – From what I’ve heard on this side – Sissoko is desperate to come to us, Bordeaux have agreed a package with us, sissoko’s agents have stated that he prefers us – and doesn’t want to be seen to go against their word and be swayed by money.
It’s all very positive regards NUFC and Moussa Sissoko – but as we know, until stood outside Benton wearing the shirt – you never can tell for sure.

Nancy Statement
‘After 46 matches in two and half years under in the jersey of AS Nancy, Massadio Haidara is leaving his former club for Newcastle United, currently 16th in the Premier League.
‘The two clubs reached an agreement and will finalise the transfer this Tuesday.’
‘The international hopes to fly this morning to the North of England where he will join with a large French contingent already consisting of Matthieu Debuchy, Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa, Romain Amalfitano, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan et Mehdi Abeid.’

55 BelfastMagpie // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:33 AM
Was reading last night, Pardew wants Danny Graham, but Graham Carr doesn’t rate him. So we’re not signing him. If that’s true, it just proves what I thought all along. Pardew has very little say on the transfer front.
56 BigKirky // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:34 AM
If Colo goes and M’Biwa comes in, then we’re back to square one. Still short on another quality centre half. I’d be highly surprised if Ashley lets Colo go for free. Why should he? After being in the Premier League team of the year last year he’d still command a decent fee.
If he was caught cheating then I have no sympathy whatsoever.
If she is ill, that is the only reason he could go, but the healthcare would be a lot better here than Argentina so I can’t see that.
If it’s just because he wants to move back there and play there than be here, no chance is he to be let go for free.
57 Mister Tuff // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:34 AM
geordie @47 – I did see that there was an Air France scheduled this morning but normally the status column is filled in with some information ie on time, delayed etc. I did checked another site where it says the flight is “en route” (not official site) -so who knows -it all adds to anxiety.
