Newcastle were interested in Ricky van Wolfswinkel in the summer of 2010 after we had been promoted from the Championship, and when Ricky was still at FC Utrecht, but no firm bid was ever made for the 6’1″ striker, and he eventually joined Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2011 for €5.4M (around £4.5M) on a five year deal.
Ricky van Wolfswinkel – Newcastle again interested?
But today the Portuguese Daily A Bola is reporting that Newcastle are again interested in the striker, who turns 24 next Sunday.
Newcastle also have striker Yoan Gouffran of Bordeaux in their sights, but it wouldn’t surprise us too much if Newcastle try to bring in two strikers this month – so that for once we have a full complement of four experienced striker on Tyneside, and we may even be able to avoid the dreaded drop.
Newcastle are in danger of being relegated for sure after the terrible loss to Reading, and that will lose the club a ton of money if we cannot remain in the Premier League, and Billionaire Mike Ashley is only too well aware of that – we know that. 😀
Ricky has just one cap for Holland, but he has 34 goals in 65 appearances for Sporting Lisbon and while at Utrecht in the Eredivisie, he scored 36 goals in 69 appearances, so he knows there the goal is.
But van Wolfswinkel could be too expensive as Sporting Lisbon rejected an €18M (£14.4M) offer from CSKA Moscow only last summer, however they are short of cash and perhaps a €10M offer from Newcastle could tempt them to sell in January.
Italian clubs Fiorentina and Napoli are also said to be interested in the striker, and he has been in excellent form ever since he joined the Portuguese club eighteen months ago.
Since he started his career at Vitesse back in 2008, Ricky has made 183 total appearances and scored a good 83 goals.
Here’s hoping.

Comment #83Said it before and I’ll say it again – people (ed included – no offence intended) aren’t giving Gouffran half the credit he deserves!!
Don’t know if its the price tag or what – but cheap doesn’t always mean useless! This lad could be JUST what we need!

Comment #85Hatem…When i saw him he was at a beach club, off his face, standing on a table shouting “I’m a f**k*ng Newcastle player” and then ended his performance by smashing a pint glass on his head….probably goes some way to explaining his injury record.

never met the lad apart from see him on the pitch but ye he had one of those faces didnt he lol.
maybe why everytime he was in the team not matter who was in defence they played well (no one better at organising a back four and kicking them up the arse when they did not pull there wieght)

Comment #88agreed, Woodgate was in a class of his own when fit, way better than any other defender we’ve ever had, including Colo. Outstanding judgement, superb in the tackle and a leader. had pace and everything…shame he has been cursed with injury his whole career or i think he’d be at Man U, Chelsea, etc now. Guess he had his time at Real Madrid so cant be too regretful!

Comment #89Havent been keeping an eye on the Toon for 24 hours so great to see movement. If we can get some decent players in I’ll be forgiving Ashley for his summer balls up , all day long. Here’s hoping. Ibiza, I dont mind if we lose Santon. I know he’ll improve, but he’s neither a good attacker or defender. Great engine, good skills, getting better, but falls between two stools.

Comment #94My problem with Santon is he is too soft IMO. Fir a big lad he never seems to be able to muscle out players like Enrique did. I know he is still young but I would like him to be more aggressive

I’m going to write to Ed and see if he can get that phrase banned from the blog..it’s doing my head in 🙂

woodgate and albert were good defenders but for pure skill, calm on the ball and the fact he carried our whole defense last season to 5th……Clearly Colo has to be ahead of those 2

Comment #104Funny, Mbiwa, debuchy, sissoko, Gouffran Haidara. Potentially 5 quality signings for about 15million. Makes you wonder why we couldn’t spend this in summer when we were going to be quite happy to drop 12mil on de jong. So sad really. We could quite easily could’ve been challenging for the CL and trophies by now. 🙁

Comment #105im not convinced by Santon to be honest…if somebody offered us 10-15mil id snap there hands off…in the summer of course! id also accept anywhere upwards of 12 mil for Tiote – just winds me up, foul after foul after foul – costs us big time and is suspended for most of the games anyway – i actually think we could get 15mil though depending on who was wanting to buy, eg chelsea, man city. however, guess both players are still so young so could both improve over next couple of years!

Comment #106Billson, you are copying me word for word re Santon from months ago! Leave it out or i;ll get my solicitor on to you 🙂
Sounds like good progress at the club, and i’ll take my hat off to the top rass if they can sort some decent players for us. It wouldnt surprise me if they booted Pardew in the summer unless he improves. But things sounding better today, so great to hear. HTL.

Comment #112Not wanting to start anything with the anti Pardew guys, as clearly he needs to improve.
However, as it seems he’s not going anywhere for now, can we not see how he gets on for the rest of the season with some needed depth in the squad and then judge him before we start saying, well we will need a new manager in the summer?

Comment #113At Newcastle there has to be a reason to spend; Ashley thought great things would be maintained with little investment, at least he seems to be giving us a little financial backing. What annoys me is that we could have spent half of what we are spending now and strengthened in all the desired positions.

Comment #114have watched gouffran for a few years now…can be very good but very inconsistent and wouldnt add much …honestly i would snap danny graham up ahead of him simply because …for same level of player i prefer the one that has proved he can bang them in for prem team and to top it up he’s a geordie…so he’ll fight very hard for the cause
