Newcastle Sign Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – Five And A Half Year Deal

8:52 pm, Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 571 Comments

Newcastle United have tonight officially announced the signing of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, on a five and a half year deal from Montpelier.  Yanga-Mbiwa has been a target of Newcastle for well over a year now – and this is a stellar signing by Newcastle, and Mapou will certainly help the strengthen the Newcastle defense, which has been a weakness of the side for the first six months of the season.

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa newcastle

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – signs for Newcastle!

This is what was posted on the Newcastle United site tonight:

Newcastle United have signed centre-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, from Montpelier. The 23-year-old has agreed a five-and-a-half year contract at St. James’ Park and takes on the number 13 shirt.

Mbiwa may be an unknown quantity to some Magpies’ fans, so here is a brief lowdown on the talented French international:

Born in Bangui, in the Central African Republic, Yanga-Mbiwa moved to France as a toddler and grew up just outside Marseille.

Joining Montpelier at the age of 13, he progressed through the youth ranks at the Stade de la Mosson.

The center-back’s professional debut came at the age of 17, on 23rd February, 2007, as they lost 1-0 to Bastia.

Yanga-Mbiwa helped La Paillade win promotion from Ligue 2 in 2008/09.

After representing France at Under 21 level, the defender has gone on to win three senior caps, with his debut coming last August in a friendly against Uruguay.

Yanga-Mbiwa was named in Les Bleus’ preliminary squad for Euro 2012, but missed out on the final cut.

He captained Montpelier to their first ever Ligue 1 title at the end of last season.

The defender has made 28 appearances in total this season, and appeared at the Emirates Stadium in November, as Montpelier faced Arsenal in the Champions League.

We should have three more signings to be announced soon – maybe tomorrow.

Mapou played a total of 187 times for Montpelier with four goals – and he was their captain – and will wear the number 13 shirt at Newcastle – unlucky for some.

But not for this boy.

Comments welcome.

    Wickedddddddddd! Fantastic news. That’s a top 3standard player and he’s playing in black and white. What a legend.

    But that picture seems to of been taken quite a while ago for its light. I’m not complaining though. Get in! Goody goody gumdrops ;)

    Sissoko’s currently on £17,538 per week. We should offer to double his wages. Would like to see Simpson,Tavernier, Golsing and Shola sold in this window.

  • 30 jimiley // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:03 PM

    I hope he is good. Nobody really knows?? We should have been signing these players last summer from a position of strength. Not as desperation signings to stay in the league. But that is Ashley all over. Does anybody think we would sign these players it we had 30 points? Mid table is what he wants. Easy life and the cash rolling in. There is one constant holding this team back. Pardew is still crap and we will never progress under him.

  • 34 TorqToon // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:04 PM

    On Yanga’s squad number – the No.13 is special to the player and he requested it.

  • 35 Spuggy // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:05 PM

    Mapou seems a great lad – perhaps we really did dodge a bullet with the attitude of Remy. Last thing we need is another Joey.

  • 36 LargeSadMenace // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:05 PM

    Great news that we’ve finally signed a centre half and even better if we pull the other signings off but I wouldn’t go so far as to praise MA to the high heavens…this should have been done in the summer, in fact we’ve needed another senior centre-half in the squad since Sol Campbell left two years ago.

    Rather than a signal of his ambitious intent, It looks to me more like MA has moved to protect our premier league status after his risk to break even again in the summer backfired massively. Call me cynical but if the money is there now then it was there in the summer.

    Nevertheless, if we do sign these other players then AP will have more options and hopefully more success on the pitch. Let’s just hope that MA has realised his one in-one out transfer policy is not suitable in building a truly competitive squad. In other words I bloody hope Mbiwa is not Colo’s replacement.

  • 37 Spuggy // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:06 PM

    One thing is for sure. Mbiwa signing is gonna tip the scales in our favour for any more potential french signing, very clever tactics.

  • 38 Nufc-83 // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:07 PM

    Excellent news!!! Curtis good could be playing in a major final at wembley great experience for the lad. Would take hines from Bradford based on the two appearences against villa works so hard and gives the lb a major headache with his pace.

  • 39 G // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:07 PM

    @33, as long as he knows what he’s doing I’m fine with it. I just never like to see centre halves or goalkeepers wear 13.

  • 40 ToonIcon // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:08 PM

    Finally after 2 years of screaming for this signing we finally get Mbiwa absolute beast of a defender great tackle pace can run with the ball
    BEST CB we’ve had since Woodgate
    couple more signings then we can start climbing the table

  • 41 jimiley // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:08 PM

  • 48 ToonIcon // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:09 PM

    we just need to make Sakho our number one target in the summer then we got the starting French CB’s for next 10 years

  • 49 Spuggy // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:09 PM

    Viera-like? Just because he is tall, French, black and a midfielder? I think that is where there similarities stop IMO. Sissoko is more of a presence going forward than Viera’s more laid-back defensive style, whenever I have seen him play. More of a box-to-box type of player. Sort of Roy Keane-like, but of course he won’t be compared to him as Keane is some white Irish nutter. What similarities do Viera and Sissoko share other than those that I have mentioned? Genuinely curious.

  • 50 G // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:11 PM

    yorky, off the top of my head I can’t think of any, but I seem to remember somebody suggesting that it was Lionel ‘the cat’ Perez’s’ number when he was here. Cant actually confirm that it’s true but I remember it being in a pub conversation once.

  • 62 Tekkers29 // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:14 PM

    Im not the type of person to spread rumours or rubbish but what i’ve been told from someone who has been reliable in the past is that we have been sorting out the pre- contract for sissoko with his agents, and now that has been sorted so he can now only join us so his club can not try for the best offer on the table as they can now only deal with us.

    We are now trying to do the deal for £1.5m-£2m to take him now or his club will get nothing at the end of the season.

    His agents are very unhappy with his club and thats why they have signed the pre-contract first to force their hand.

  • 63 YorkshiresFinestGeordie // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:15 PM

  • 75 Spreadthetoon // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:18 PM

    I think we do sign good younguns but you need to get the best out of players, not in the reserves but out on loan. I’d like Adam Campbell to be played on a regular basis in a lower league…he deserves that for his development. Hopefully with these additional signings we can loan out more of our fringe players for their development. Its not their fault that they are not ready, they don’t play regular competitive football, don’t have the experience and then dropped into the premiership with some of the best footballers in the world….sometimes its good to reflect.

  • 76 TorqToon // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:19 PM

    The start of the turn around has began!

    1st of four through the door in the next few days.

    And hopefully a surprise left on deadline day, not that im greedy.

    You know, in a way, i hate where we are in the league. But I feel this current situation can only benefit the team in the long run. We wouldn’t be going after these players if we were riding our luck with injuries like last season. Its kicked the board into action in a monumental way. Lets hope they have learnt their lessons.

    Onwards and upwards.

  • 85 TorqToon // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:22 PM

    Spuggy – I would say neither. I think he has to be taken on face value and with that he brings much needed attitributes like pace and an eye for goal that we have sorely missed since Ba left.

    As has been said – he is a £5-8mil player ordinarily.

    @104, after his performance in the Brighton game, play acting around like some spoilt kid, I wouldn’t bother if I were him. Can’t see us keeping hold of him for too much longer. Much as he looked promising before that match, frankly on that performance I won’t be upset if he never plays for us again.

    Mbiwa now hopefully Sissoko. That would really be top quality. We really would have big competition in the middle of the park with Anita, Bigi, Tiote, Cabaye, Gosling, Vuckic,HBA, Amilfiltano, Jonas, Marveaux, Abeid and Obertan and hopefully Sissoko. This truly would be strength in depth BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT we still lack up front for now.

  • 126 askar // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:39 PM

    @spuggy: Remy >>> (Haidara + Gouffran + Sissoko) ==> Mbiwa+Remy >>>> M’biwa + Haidara + Gouffran + Sissoko.

    But Mbiwa is class :-) and I know what I’m talking about…Now have to go for another Remy.

    Gouffran is not good striker :-(

    Lisandro will be a dream :-)

    Toon boss Alan Pardew added: ‘We needed to strengthen the team and bringing in Mapou will give the whole squad a boost.

    Hope he is strengthening and not Colo’s replacement but as the time goes on with no news it’s looking likely Colo’s on his way. I’d be sad to see him go if he does.

  • 142 papscrunt // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:44 PM

    I honestly can’t see us spending a packet on a centre forward. Its obvious Pardew wants 4-3-3 as out formation. He played either Ba or Cisse out wide and one of them always suffered. Gouffran is a wide forward in the Wiltord type mould and will fit into what he wants. Cisse through the middle and Ben Arfa and Gouffran either side of him. Signing Gomis would be a total waste (I don’t rate him either)

  • 143 JTOONJ // Jan 22, 2013 at 9:44 PM

    @150, depends on the final opposition, and the league table. Seem to remember the FA threatening to block lower league clubs taking Euro spots, but they had to back down, although I think they don’t allow either of the Welsh teams entry. I hope Bradford do win the cup though. Always had a soft spot for them, probably because of the stadium fire incident.

    It would be fair to expect more of France national team coach Didier Deschamps but he’s criticised the move too, being quoted by Le10 this evening as saying “I do not know if Mapou made ??the right choice, we will see later.

    “I think he had no choice. If Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern were also in for him, I think he would not have chosen Newcastle. This can also be a springboard for him in the long run.”

    M’Biwa looks a real powerhouse, fast and strong. Loves a good mazey run like a box to box midfielder. Excellent signing and I hope colo stays to play alongside him.

    Didider deschamps is a toss pot, he is probably upset he can no longer avoid Ben Arfa now with all the French players. He has to take notice of us with all the French lads. Debuchy and Cabaye are internationals, mbiwa and Ben Arfa were left out the euros so they will be hoping to impress along with marveaux and obertan who will want to be noticed. Didier has to take notice of us with even more French players looking like coming to us. If we sign sissoko, haidara and gouffran we would have no fewer than five or six French starters In the 11.

    I have previously stated that whatever signings we make Pardew will still take us down, however if those signings remove Shola and Jonas from the team, not even Pardope could be that useless, we will have some championship team mind.

    May set a new record next year 140 points.

    Brilliant work by Graham Carr and Mike Ashley, the best squad we have ever had, IMO if all these signings come through. How could Parsnip f##k it up. Easily is the answer.

    Usually takes him 2 month to blood a new signing, Fatty wont be happy if that happens. He is on borrowed time me thinks if he doesnt shape up.

    Spuggy – seems very interesting. One minute he says they have been forced to make a pre-contractual agreement with us and the next they say he has three options and one is an extension with Toulouse. Doesn’t appear like anything is signed yet but its pleasing they seem disinterested with Toulouse and are talking about signing a contract with us for the summer, definitely hotting up. We are being linked with some talented players and I hope we can get some more over the line. Gouffran seems the next player most likely to sign, it’s gone a bit quiet on haidara

    Munster – He aint the tallest but from the vids ive seen he has a canny leap, lets wait until weve seen him though eh!

    On Gouffran, i cant say he stood out when we played them at home, so not sure on this lad, again ill reserve judgement until ive seen him a few times.

    Thats the last Englishman out of the starting 11 then, if Collo leaves hopefully we bring in a English CB to play alongside M’biwa

  • 237 Eddie // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:35 PM

    I still think we’ll need an established CB alongside Mapou.
    Lescott has been mentioned, though i’d prefer Hangeland. Haven’t seen this Coates fella play (i wonder if he’s still learning the English “style”?). But we’ll probably end up with Douglas – as we have a clear penchant for players in the last year of their contracts. i must admit, i do find the prospect of a Douglas – Yanga-Mbiwa partnership quite, how shall i put it… invigorating!

  • 240 NUFC FOR SALE // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:36 PM

    Don’t know why people are getting over excited with the signing of yanga when he’s clearly colors replacement.
    This is one step forward 2 steps back’ Colo is clearly one of the best centre halfs around and is premier league experienced.
    I still fear its too little too late.
    The players we had on Saturday were good enough.
    The team is disorganized and negative that’s coaching not playing staff.
    Is sossoko that good? I’ve watched videos and he looks fairly ordinary?

    Spuggy, im a realist, over the moon with all the signings and our squad potentially would only be bettered by Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, however i have massive concerns about the man in charge, its like running a Formula 1 car on unleaded.

    Personally if his decisions and team selections dont improve he should be given the bullet quickly before he undermines the whole club.

    I will say over the last few games (norwich/brighton excluded) he has defo made an effort to get the ball down and play more. First half against Reading was for me as good as anything we played last year, so here’s hoping he is slowly changing his tune.

We we’re royally kicked by the underhand performance of both clubs with the Remy saga – so I would just see this as the heavens looking kindly upon us – some you lose and some you win. This is one battle I want our club to win! HWTL

  • 248 Toon1978 // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:39 PM

    I hope Ashley splashes that little bit extra to get Sissoko in now. Toulouse deserve something for their player tbf so i hope the board see that and get him in this window. Getting greedy no me thinks lol.

I’d also love to see Pardew re-invigorated now, to the manager he was last season. Come on, we’ve all been misearble – lets get excited for once . Canny post. Pardew has got to have been pretty down with recent form and his confidence must have taken a knock too. Sure he can turn it around if everyone pulls together. If not he’s on his bike.

  • 260 Munster Mag // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:45 PM

    We may indded have dodged a bullet with Remy, who, by his comments, can get very down on himself at times. Possibly very hot and cold. Can u imagoine the lift these players will give Cabaye, HBA etc? I reckon we’ll bury some team at St James’s soon if we can get our best players on the pitch and Pardew can loosen the shackles a bit.

  • 261 Eddie // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:46 PM

  • 263 Spotlight Kid // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:46 PM

    Are these new players really going to be trusted to Pardew’s footballing ‘methods’? For Ashley to splash the cash means something has changed in his long term plan; and there’s no way he’s going to waste millions to make Pardew appear marginally less out-dated. There’s surely another manager pulling the strings behind the scenes here, and these players must be a pre-condition of him coming to the club. At least I hope so….

    Buzzing like crazy over. We’ve made two superb additions in Mathieu & now Mapou (hopefully now won’t have to see Simmo or Willo again). Tomorrow is going to amazing as well with Gouffran and Haidara coming in. Sissoko signing on a pre-contract as well superb (amazing if it turns out he’s actually signing in January for a fee). If that all goes well we should go all steam ahead to secure Aubamayeng (maintaining Colo as well till the summer where we can Douglas on a free). Then we’d be sorted!

  • 275 jammylambo // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:50 PM

    @ munster agreed. i mean results aside , from pardews position it must be bloody awful with the stick hes been getting , no manager likes to lose and no person revels in being hated , what ashley has done is without making the dreaded ” vote of confidence” speech has backed pardew with what counts , money and players , if hes willing to throw money at him , aside from the potential deals he was also willing to stump up 8mill for remy ( but we wont talk about that)

    if that sort of confidence doesnt fill you with the confidence that comes with trust i dont know what will frankly. itll be good to see pardew talk about something other than turmoil and bad luck. and hopefully that belief ashley has put into pardew , pardew can in turn put into our players.

    in 7 days time well be talkin g about a super 3 points , fantastic debuts and no more of this relegation or pardew out crap.

    staility , confidence and faith my friends!

  • 277 Nufc-83 // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:51 PM

    Good gained massive experience an it will stand him in good sted for the future. I do agree though people are going overboard he looked nervous and kept smashing the ball clear although the same could be said about most of the bradford players. He did also get skinned a few times but if he plays cb naturally a pace player will cause him problems if he is out wide. His positioning looked good though.

  • 278 89Norcal // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:51 PM

    If we landed all four frenchmen, that would be massive and I’d have to suspect Debuchy, Cabaye, and HBA would have played their part in it :)

  • 282 hdavid23 // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:54 PM

    if we really get all these 4 players that are apparently on Tyneside having their medicals, plus we bring in one more striker and keep/replace Colo, we would still have a chance of overtaking Liverfools… would love to see Enrique’s face when that happened…

  • 283 Eddie // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:55 PM

    True Spuggy – a little post-colo depression is looking unavoidable. Which is why we must be looking at bringing in another CB.

  • 286 yo-yo // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:56 PM

    Agree totally. He’s done the biz to set is right so at least is prepared to adapt the plans. Also still got amazing deals for the players.

  • 287 I-Love-Ameobi // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:58 PM

    O Dear. I don’t understand why we have bought Mbiwa. After Coloccini leaves, I was so looking forward to Ameobi playing CB as he can play anywhere. He has already featured up front, on the wing, in the midfield, I just think we should have at least tried him at CB. Wiht his vision and strength he must be able to intercept and the out muscles vast numbers of strikers out there.

  • 288 SupaToonKid // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:59 PM

    Douglas and Mbiwa would be a superb contrast in CB defending styles which would greatly benefit the club. Imagine this next season:

    Debuchy, Douglas, Mbiwa, Santon;
    Tioté, Cabaye (c);
    Ben Arfa, Sissoko, Aubamayeng;

    Subs: Elliot, S. Taylor, Haidara, Perch, Anita, Marveaux, Gouffran

    The flexibility there is amazing. Just look at the options we have on that bench. Anita for Tioté, Gouffran for Cissé or Aubamayeng etc.
    Great depth in squad there with other good back up not even mentioned e.g. Bigirimana, Jonas etc. Would allow us to clear the rubbish out and loan the youth out as well.

    PLEASE make this dream come true Mike!

  • 289 thespecialone-ameobi // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:59 PM

  • 290 I-Love-Ameobi // Jan 22, 2013 at 10:59 PM

    Much disappointement with this signing. Ameobi should be played CB but if he is not in Pardew’s plans for CB, atleast play him as a box to box midfielder and forget all about Sissoko. He can be our Yaya Toure.

  • 291 Eddie // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:00 PM

  • 302 I-Love-Ameobi // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:03 PM

    I agree, Ameobi should be played up front as he can be a prolific goal scorer but since Cisse is going to be played as Pardew has said, I think we should play Ameobi in the midfeild or CB. I think his immense talents are wasted on the wing as shown in the last match.

    Spuggy, eddie – if colo leaves we have to get another cb in as we will be no better off in central Defense. We need two good cb’s with Taylor third choice. Not sold on Douglas, looks slow and hot headed so I’m leaning more towards Mirin. Another striker wouldn’t I amiss either even if gouffran comes in.

    I love the idea of having a strong French contingent on one side:

    Debuchy – m’biwa
    Ben Arfa – cabaye

    Don’t worry, Ameobi can be our 15-20 goal man, he just needs to be played up front and Cisse should be dropped to the bench. All of those chances Cisse had agianst Reading, Ameobi would have put away.

    Ameobi is the core that holds this club together. Ameobi is NUFC. They say no man is bigger than the club. I say no club is bigger than Shola Ameobi. Ameobi bleads black and white.

  • 319 Robby Bobson // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:12 PM

    I feel the defense is getting to a position where we can leave the attackers to attack.

    If we manage to get Sissoko and Tiote in DM with Debuchy, Mbiwia, Colo and Santon behind we can have the likes of ben arfa where they need to be.

    The fact is our midfield and wingers have had to put in a shift as leaving defence exposed was too risky.

    Good vibes on the blog tonight, no doubt class players but without sounding shi*ing on things these players may need time to settle. And times is not what we really have esp on the run we are on. No doubt tho these players will give everyone a lift. Lets hope pards is bold with team selection……..sissoko pulled out of squad for Toulouse ……. Got to be in the bag……

    Shola has been an excellent player for the toon, but he needs to go to the coaching side of things now and retire gracefully. As for sammy, the lad needs to go out on loan to a championship side for a few years.

  • 325 I-Love-Ameobi // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:16 PM

    Well said son apart from the Ameobi is past it comment. Ameobi is maturing with age and coming into his own. He has developed new dimensions to his game that no man knew before. He doesn’t even get tackled by grass anymore!!

    As he Mail would put it, “Allez the lads!”

    Like it but maybe “Allez le gars” would more accurate!

    And for good measure, our appreciation for Ashley’s input into these deals could be voiced as…….

    ” Mike possible!”

    “Allez Ashley!”

    His intervention and speedy success in concluding this and hopefully more signings speaks volumes in regard to past failures.

  • 329 Zero // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:20 PM

    Simmo and willo might be close to the exit door but i very much doubt krul or santon will be going anywhere, even if we are being linked to the england U21 keeper i doubt we would use him to replace Krul.

    Ben Arfa—————–Cissé—————–Gutierrez

    Gouffran is just another Obertan, I promise you that.
    But will do as cover for Cissé. Rather Gouffran then say
    Ranger or Ameobi. However. We need another starting XI striker/LW player. Jonas is not at his best anymore.

  • 335 kevymartins // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:26 PM

    We need him straight in there williash iton out but nooo stupid d i c k face pardrew will make him sit on the bench for 10 games give him europa league matches like what he did with santon marveaux ben arfa just watch

  • 336 Munster Mag // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:26 PM

    I’m not certain Tiote is going to be here next season unless he improves or gets back to the level he was at. If we had signed him this season, we;d be saying he wasnt up to much and looked unfit and indisciplined. But I think these signings will lift all boats, although Hiadara is not a first teamer and Gouffran may not be the striker Pardew envisages to be the main man. So perhaps one more to follow. I just hope we can get guys like Marv HBA and Caaye on the pitch together soon, because this will ease the pressure on Cisse as more chances will be set up for him. I think he’s a marvellous talent, who will come again ( a bit like Beattie, who is probably knocking one out as i type, eeeeek )

    Kevvy – learning the English game I think Pardew called it, he did it to Arfa, marveaux and santon. Not sure if if worked as we don’t know how they would have done if they played straight away.

    Eddie – I’m on the fence with Sammy because of his age but I’m not very optimistic, he disappoints me more than anything but will then come on and do a good little cameo against Everton for example

  • 348 hugotoon // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:34 PM

    Fantastic news! This guy is quality and will only get better, potentially one of the best Centre backs in Europe in a few years time. Now sign the other three up, secure a pacy and ready made striker/right winger and we can rise up the table (If Pardew sorts himself out). A dominating win at Aston Villa and our season could get the kickstart it has been craving.

  • 368 solano // Jan 22, 2013 at 11:45 PM

    Mbiwa…a very good prospect, but this will be last chance saloon if he is only to come in at the expense of Colo….Taylor has been out for so long it will take time for him to get up to speed and I’m afraid poor old Willo hasn’t been up to speed since we got promoted. Desperate gamble that had to be taken which doesn’t deserve that much credit for the top brass who have let us drift into this position by indifference if not, outright neglicence, but are shite scared of missing out on TV gold.
    Not sure of other prospective signings – must be hard debuting in a pressure cooker atmosphere, but one thing is for sure, if results don’t turnaround immediately, Pardew will be gone and we will have our 7th manager in 6 years…what stability!

    Guti’s soon to be 30 this summer, by the time Haidara gets acclimated to England and gets some game time, Guti will probably be on his way out anyways.

    I’m not suggesting anyone of these just Beasttie ask who in Chievo and Parma we might be tracking since our scouts were supposed to have been at their game. So I found one guy that looked like Colo and one that looked like Remy. Two with funny names that are waiting moderation and two Strikers that scored in that game also waiting moderation since I put two links in one thread. Can only say I know of Paloschi since his time in Milan and Biabany being lightning fast.

    Interesting you mention a striker. I think Gouffran is a good addition but I am under the impression that another striker will be signed this window. IF we tei up the other 3 French players we have been linked with then their attentions will be free to focus heavily on a striker. Siem De Yong is still my favoured choice for our team and fit – any thoughts on this….think Gouffran will play on the flanks with HBA and Marv/Cabaye in the sitting roll behind Cisse, but I think Siem will give us more choices / flexibility…..any thoughts?

    Delighted that Mike Ashley has finally decided to loosen the purse strings. Doesn t look like he s finished shopping yet, this could be our best transfer window ever.

    As already suggested tonight if we are happy with his shopping it would be nice to show him some appreciation at our next home game.
    This may help to inspire an even more extravagant spree in the summer.

    Not to put a dampener on proceedings but to follow the Arsenal model as we are evidently doing without a certain Mr. Wenger pulling the strings it would not have been anywhere near as successful.

    I really hope Pardew can mould the new recruits into a modern attacking unit. Whether his dated philosophy on the game or his over cautious approach will prevent this I and many others on here have our doubts.

    Yeah I definitely think that would be the case. Siem is definitely England or German bound in this or the next window. I don’t think his brother Luke is that settled in Germany from what I heard.
    My thinking is MA is not gonna risk EPL status on just 1 striker…..its too BIG a risk. I also think if we sign these 4 g8 players from France as additions to our squad/ team then we will be a VERY VERY attractive team to sign and play for. It is critical that we survive the drop which is no mean feat and whilst AP is not my choice and I have been furious with him of late, if the board has backed him with signings – its best to get behind the mgr and team. Then review during the summer window.

    santon can also play as a winger on both sides, thats why in years to come he will be a legend at the toon, new improved team for villa.

    debuchy, mbiwa, taylor/colo, hidaira
    sissoko, cabye, anita
    santon, cisse, marv

    this is an very attacking formation and if pard’s gets his book out we could easily have at least 4-5 goals against villa, even maybe in the frst half.

  • 411 Spreadthetoon // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:30 AM

    Geordie Dan
    It’d give us possibilities. Our problem is we have not had the players or the choices to really mix it up with shape, selection, tactics to a certain extent. Having depth of quality players will give us competition which will excite players but also enable them to be rotated and have a rest and also have the ability to bring on game changers and always have the element of surprise. We have been very predictable all season partly due to AP and partly due to players available. Just hope AP no longer puts square pegs in round holes or I’ll go f’ing mad! Anyway lets get behind the lads and hope that the good times can roll during next season and that we can fight our way out the pit!

    With Mapou (one of the hottest properties in Europe right now) signing for us, we have become an attractive option despite our close position to the relegation zone.

    A few more big names and we’re laughing.

    We have however been here many, many times before and everytime we have been let down.

  • 417 nick_9 // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:36 AM

    I really think the likes of de Jong and even sissoko this window is asking to much of Ashley given we have signed Debuchy, mbiwa and are dead certain to sign haidara and gouffran. I am hoping he has another striker lined up along with gouffran but would be surprised if we spend more than 5m on one, I think dejong would be about 10m. A precontract for sissoko would be very nice though.

    Debuchy -rb
    Mbiwa – cb,rb,cdm
    Haidara -lb
    Gouffran -st, lw or rw
    Replacement for Ba?
    Precontract for sissoko

    That would be some window and a massive statement from Ashley that we have to stay in the league and do well. If we drop leagues we cost him money again and lose value as a club which he won’t want. He is protecting his investment thankfully. The above players would give us plenty of strength in depth in every department and leave us with little to do in the sumer other than perhaps replace any players who leave (colo?).

  • 418 Sazzer // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:36 AM

    Yeah, someone sitting close to him should go do this and say good boy Ashley Yong-il.

  • 419 Spreadthetoon // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:37 AM

    Both you and I were miffed last window. This window could make up for that. I think if we sign these 5 french plyrs (inc. Dreamboat 2) + 1 very good striker then we will not have to do too much business in the summer and have a very settled team / squad ready for the next season. Possibly a CB and another ST in the summer – then we can seriously compete in the top half of the league. Mapou is an absolute fantastic signing!

  • 420 Black and White with an army lol // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:39 AM

  • 421 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:40 AM

    Couldn’t agree more!

    I think if ever Ashley was going to prove us wrong it is now!

    If Pardew can’t get a win with these players then he is the worst manager in history. I think he’ll keep us up thought with the backing but I think if Ashley is ever serious about silverware he needs a new coaching set up and probably new manager.

    I think we’ll have 3 new players in tomorrow!

  • 422 Spreadthetoon // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:43 AM

    Sissoko will come this window, I’m pretty certain on that cos’ his club have told him he can stay but if he wants to go they will bench him till summer. Reality is NUFC will get Sissoko to sign a pre-contract. Then the french club will have the option to pay his wages on the bench or get some money for their player for their remaining time in the contract. I believe given the nature of the player that NUFC will put in a fair offer circa €3.5m for the player which would be the market rate. Just my thoughts on it.

  • 424 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:43 AM

    If we build the first team now in the Summer we can concentrate on the youth/development squad and invest heavily there, god knows its needed.

    Get rid of some dead weight and look to bring in some youngsters with talent and we have one of the best squads in the league.

    We are that close to something special! I just always have the doubt that we will fcuk it up with the clowns in charge.

    true about we need new coaches, we only have a handful of coaches and the only 2 good ones we have is carver and Beardsley the rest or rubbish, also new scouts should be provided since we only have 2 atm

  • 427 Mister Tuff // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:47 AM

    Getting new players into the club is the most important and immediate action required- in order to retain our premier league status. I suspect that El Gourdo has not given a “freebie” wedge of cash -meaning that this windows investments will probably have to be paid for in the summer.
    This course of action can only be by selling someone. So whist the current hiring frenzy is excellent (and probably not finished yet) be aware we may lose a good player in the summer.

  • 428 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:47 AM

    I’d love a decent continental coaching set up.

    Spanish coach for passing, German coach for attacking, Italian coach for defending, French coach technique and an English coach for journeys on the motorway.

  • 429 Spreadthetoon // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:48 AM

    I don’t buy that we don’t score from corners because we do not have the right players……that’s tosh….its about movement and anticipation. Messi scores loads of headers and he’s not the tallest player. APs on thin ice but I’d prefer to be positive, back him and see the season out and then review. He could turn it round and to be fair not many managers get time at a club to prove their worth……but he’s gotta start having a winning mentality not a loosing one. I think part of our problem is that AP has talked our way to relegation and its gotta stop now.

  • 430 nick_9 // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:49 AM

    Spread – do you personally feel like 3.5 million Euros would e good value now as opposed to the summer on a free? Knowing what agents want and signing on fees are it would probably work our cheaper.

    Black and white army – didn’t realise he could play left back too but he can play the DM role according to many articles.

    According to these guys were after aubemyang (spelling?) still for around 10m, if he sees sissoko coming here after mbiwa and Debuchy I could turn his head

  • 431 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:50 AM

    Mister Tuff

    Could it be that Colo could pay for this spree?

    The guy is worth £8-10 million and I’m sure some Argentinian/Brazilian club could splash out.

    Plus if we sell Gosling, Obertan, Willaimson and get Simpson and Xisco off the wage bill then it suddenly it pays for its self.

  • 432 Sazzer // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:50 AM

    On serious note – Hopefully we will get another Plunder day or Pillar de Jour or how you say it in french. If not I will be grateful for this one and if we could encourage it to happen again. I would join in.

  • 433 Spreadthetoon // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:53 AM

    Agreed on youth development etc etc. Problem this season has been the stretch on our thin squad and EL which really is a burden and I did mention that in the summer. Always seems to be a poison pill. I just want us to climb the league to safety and have a branch and root review of the club, starting with the complete review of DL and what he brings to the club, along with coaching and training. Southampton have a much better model than us apparently so we should learn from them and not snub what they offer to youngsters. After all they seem to have been more successful than us and I could list lots of decent players they’ve had on their books over the years!

  • 434 nick_9 // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:54 AM

    Beattie – I think we need some foreign input somewhere in the coaching department, seems strange to have an old fashioned English manager with foreign technical players. A French speaking coach would help massively.

    Mister tuff – I’m braced for collo leaving and also conscious that Simmo, harper and Xisco will be leaving. That levels out the wages almost but if this new group can drag our @rses up the league they will pay for themselves in league position revenue at 750k a place. I think we have enough cover at full back if we sign haidara so I would accept any offers for Simpson and I would even allow Williamson to go and have perchino as 4th choice. Ranger and Xisco need transfer listing too. Even if we only got a couple of million I would take it

  • 435 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:55 AM

    RM – French
    CM – Ivorian

    Man Utd:

    GK – Spanish

    LB – French
    RM – Ecuadorian
    CM – Japanese
    CM – Brazilian

    I could go on, it doesn’t matter where they’re from as long as they’re winning.

  • 436 Spreadthetoon // Jan 23, 2013 at 12:58 AM

    In the summer with confirmed TV revenues I am absolutely all players prices along with fees and agents fees will rocket….hence the anomaly is to trade this window than next. Like i mentioned to Beattie if we do the lion share of our business this window and survive the drop then we could be very serious contenders for an extremely exciting season next. Don’t want to get ahead of myself….so I’ll just see who comes through to SJP with the black and white eh?! HWTL

    Southampton have a model to follow as long as we don’t sell.

    We need transforming from top to bottom but first we need a team able to compete for the riches football offers.

    Gladly I think Ashley is realizing you cannot compete without investment.

    The number 1 model for me in current world football is Dortmund.

    Excellent youth set up, little investment, massive support and a returning super power in world football.

  • 441 Mister Tuff // Jan 23, 2013 at 1:04 AM

    Beattie -paying for the spending spree. I do not think the Collo situation fits the bill. Clearly there is something dodgy about this whole scenario -the one that probably fits the bill is “playing away”. Somebody said the other day we were going to try to get him to buy out his contact for £2million or some figure along those lines. Clearly that does not recompense us as to his value. I think, note just think, that we may accept a minimal amount from him otherwise he will do a Tevez and we’ll get nothing. As he has stated he wants to be away, and if new CB is in position -that should signal Collos end. Not a satisfactory way to end his tenure at the Toon.
    So in answer to the question I suspect (hope I’m wrong) that it may be Benny or Mr T. who goes in the summer.
    but there again it’s the Toon and it’s anybodys’ guess.

    Totally agree. Pardew can t suddenly change his old fashioned style overnight to accomodate all these tschnical players.

    He has never had the luxury of working with a team of ball playing skillful players in every position.

    The fear is he will unbalance the team with his over emphasis on defence and then restricting the creative players.

    Gerard Houllier would be ideal in some sort of advisory role.

    Southampton have produced some excellent youth. I think it’s becoming increasingly hard for young players in the premier league as positive results are a must and its too much of a risk. One positive of signing several players this window is that someone else can risk
    Playing them to our benefit. Loan the lot of them out, Sammy, Tav, abeid, amalfitano, Campbell, streete

  • 449 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2013 at 1:09 AM

    What I don’t understand is that Colo doesn’t have to return to San Lorenzo.

    Why can’t he go back to a top Argentinian club that will pay 4-5 million now!?

    Failing that San Lorenzo have a wonderkid called Alan Ruiz who is supposed to be quality. Why not trade him and take an option on a few youth players?

    It smells fish to me!

  • 450 t00ntime // Jan 23, 2013 at 1:12 AM

    Imo sissoko is needed more than the LB/gouffran. Gouffran isnt great but he will do a job and hidera (or what ever) is a prospect. Sissoko would give tiote+cabaye the competion they need and will also be a player who can change games around. We have no one who can change a loss in to a win and imo he can. At the bottom we will need strong personalaties and he wud be one of the few players in our squad to have thay (imo).

    I cant see him signing a pre contract, he has angerd his club i think if we give him a pre contract he will say no and go to QPR. We shud just get him signed up.

    Btw i’m not saying gouffran/lb are bad signing just some are more important than others and imo Lb is for squad depth and gouffran is a good player but not great or a gamechanger.

    Just wondering do u think we will go 4-4-2 with a tall st (cisse) and a pacey one (gouffran) like liverpool used too, or put gouffran on the Lw?

    Mister tuff – i remember some strong words from Pardew back when tiote got sent off, along the lines of shape up or out. If we have signed sissoko it could mean tiote is the one player most likely to leave. Benny loves it here so I don’t think he willows sideways by perhaps if psg or Barca/real come in he could be tempted and cannot be blamed. More annoyed at players who leave at a time to suit themselves like colo might be. Mbiwa signed a contract extension so his club would receive money for him but on the premise they didn’t demand a crazy fee, what a thoughtful guy.

    It allows the clubs to evolve and you can guarantee that soon there will be more Spanish and German coaches coming to the PL soon. We should jump ahead of the game.

    Ajax are great at inviting their former players to do ther coaching at the club.

    Never doubted MA, but still doubt AP.

    MA is a good owner, he is just not involved in running this club before. He is more involved in his main source of income which is not this club, he is more involved in the business which is supporting this club financially, but sadly most people don’t see it that way. Now that he is personally involved, you can see the difference and I don’t blame him for not involved too much, it’s understandable.
    Regarding Colo and san lorenzo, the hold up must be agreement between this club and san lorenzo, it’s not between colo+his dad and this club. It’s what can san lorenzo give in return for Colo, until this club can agree on what san lorenzo has to offer, Colo will stay imo.

  • 485 Santon03 // Jan 23, 2013 at 4:29 AM

    These transfers is also a warning for AP, he always making excuses of injuries, lack of depth, blablabla.
    MA is eliminating those excuses, now that AP can’t make anymore excuses, he must produce good results or he will be sacked. These transfers = more pressures on AP to produce results, if he has good mentality then I can see we will finish top 10, if he crumbles then he will get sacked in 2 or 3 games imo.

    so less then 15mill spent on those 4 players.

    Wow. Just wow.

  • 496 Santon03 // Jan 23, 2013 at 5:46 AM

    Yes, Remy is an ass. Lucky QPR stole him, we dodged the bullet. It’s a blessing in disguise.
    I’m not expecting the team to win against top 7 teams, but good if we could get some points. I’m expecting not to lose against teams from 8th to bottom especially at home.

    I think out of these 4 players coming in, there is still 1 or 2 more coming in. I also hope for a top striker could be Italian or Dutch not French, but definitely not Graham.

    Man Utd just signed Mbiwa from Montpellier for £26.5m in Jan 2014 in my Football Manager save.

    This lads gonna be class!

    Gonna batter Villa!!!!

  • 501 Blaydon-Toon // Jan 23, 2013 at 6:03 AM

    @Anita that is quality which ever way you dress it up …. Value for money when you look at Liverfools Henderson £20m Downing £20m Carroll £35m you have to laugh :-) Cabs £4.5m Tiote 3.5m M’biwa 7m Sissoko 3.5m Hba £5m :-):-):-):-):-)

  • 502 Blaydon-Toon // Jan 23, 2013 at 6:08 AM

    Well 5 points from the next 3 games would be respectable but 4 prob more realistic given who we have to play then we can crack on and climb the table … On another note HBA will love the ambition shown and be less likely to leave in the summer with all his French pals to play with :-)

  • 503 jimmysmith // Jan 23, 2013 at 6:21 AM

    Debooch Mbiwa Colo Santon

    Cab Anita

    Probably Santon will be pushed as LW and Jonas will play less games now.

    ——————–Gouf or Cisse——————

    Jonas can play as DM and Cab as AM, Marv as RW if HBA still injured.

  • 507 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:09 AM

    Santon – I believe that Jonas will now be utilised more in a ‘shut up shop’ role how we have used perch recently.

    Just hope we don’t try to shut up shop too early and we learnt from the Reading game.

  • 510 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:21 AM

    Do you see haidara going straight into the team?
    Also GFNFrance reckon aswell as reaching an agreement with sissoko that we are still for sahko have you heard anything?

  • 511 Toon_Tom // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:27 AM

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~Cisse/VanWolf/new CF~~~~~~~~~~~
    that isnt a 19/20man team but simply showing our strength in depth with new and pottential new recruits.
  • 512 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:29 AM
    TADS – I still believe we will pick up Moussa Sisskoko in this window. Said it several times – but I think we entered into a pre contract agreement to prevent anybody else coming in for him a la QPR. Now we have a great bargaining tool – he is ours in the summer – but we want him this window – Toulouse know that – and they ALSO want some money for the bloke. I think we are discussing a possible fee today an I think if we can get to around £2.8 – £3.0mil then the deal will be done.
    On Haidara – I’m not sure they will slot him right in knowing Pards way of easing players in – but I feel he could slot straight in. Now we have Mbiwa signed – Massadio will come in ‘under the radar’ and surprise many people. A quality signing and one of the best French youngsters there is.
  • 513 Toon_Tom // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:29 AM
  • 514 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:32 AM
    TADS – And on Sakho – it’s a strange one – he rates himself quite highly after his ‘big money move’ and I wander whether he will try and stick it out for another year – purely to attempt to prove a point.
    But saying that PSG don’t want him anymore. As I said – should colo go I believe it will be one of three…
  • 515 Santon03 // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:36 AM
    Torq & Jesper
    Shut up shop or park the bus, usually for the last 5 to 10 minutes or against team like Barca, but I haven’t seen any team doing that against team like Reading especially at home. They usually changed into 5-4-1 formation (3DM), that’s what I learned from watching Italian teams or managers, and I have watched Serie A regularly for a long time now. I think AP has different understanding about it.
    I don’t mind those tactics, but he is doing it differently and wrong imo.
    I miss those days before AP in charge, when we scored 5 or 6 goals in a game.
  • 516 bills-son // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:37 AM
    Great news on Mbiwa and if we get Sissoko as well these are two players who can have a massive impact on the team – not just with their talent but also because they are warriors and leaders on the pitch.
    On another subject – Andy Carroll. What is he worth now? Hardly played for WH, scored one goal and there is no chance WH will pay that £17M for him. I cant see Lpool wanting him back and there could be a massive bargain to be had in the summer. I still believe there is one hell of a player in AC. The £35M fee was ridiculous and has affected his reputation but at £7M/£8M and £60K a week I think he could be well worth taking. AC is very decent on the deck and having him in the team doesn’t mean you have to play hoofball. I know many fans wont want him back and I understand that but I’ve got a feeling it would be good business to bring him back – at the right price only though.
  • 517 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:38 AM
    Think on the whole i would prefer alderwield in know sahko’s bigger but i just like how calm and composed on the ball alderwield is!
    Several sources seem to be confirming we have had a bid rejected for van wolfswinky so with haidara and gouffran due today, a decision due on colo, sissoko maybe coming in and if colo leaves another CB i reckon were in for a rollercoaster few days like!
    Never dull supporting the toon!
  • 520 Transfer Sage // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:41 AM
    I have said before I dont want carroll back…nothing to do with how he plays, as I do believe he can be good on the ground.
    My problems with him are:
    1: too injury prone, constant muscle injuries which he never seems to get back fully from
    2. we will be more direct, maybe not his fault as he will try to play another way, but players see the long ball as an easy option
  • 521 Santon03 // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:41 AM
    and he didn’t use any sweeper when trying to do those tactics either or doesn’t know how to use sweeper.
  • 522 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:43 AM
    He’s obviously had funds made available to him and we seem to be bringing in all the players he wanted/we needed in the summer im hoping we’ll see a toon revival in the next couple of weeks!
    If we are in for van wolfswinkle as reported i teckon that puts AC very far down the shopping list
  • 523 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:44 AM
    Bills – son – whilst i agree that his current value and wage demands are highly inflated – I think that at a hugely reduced fee and with a wage cut in like with current form etc, he could be picked up very cheaply.
    I mean – Liverpool have to accept that he isn’t a £35mil player, not even a £17mil player – he is more around the £6-8mil value and that is largely due to his goal record at the toon and his English nationality.
    He wouldn’t mean a revert back to hoofball – but an added dimension to our game. And we all know – there is nothing more dangerous than a player out to prove the doubters wrong. I’m not saying it will happen because who knows, but it’s an option worth looking at in the summer should we be able to strengthen further.
    But we need to get these boys over the line first!
  • 524 Transfer Sage // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:45 AM
    This window has shown Ashley’s intent for me…he has got involved himself and managed to sort things out (shows llambias is just a parasite at the club).
    This is all business we should have done in the summer but it’s better late than never.
    They key window is the summer….we may have a lot of new players but we still need to make sure we bring in 2-3 good players for the first team/pushing for a start to keep people on a high and keep players on their toes…even if it means 1 has to leave for this.
    But signs are looking good.
  • 525 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:45 AM
  • 526 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:48 AM
  • 527 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:49 AM
    TADS – I didn’t see that the Van Wolfswinkle bid have been confirmed (and rejected…) by reliable sources. If so, an we have genuinely formed a strong interest in the player then that’s fantastic.
    And yes – with that lad on board – AC is even further down the list. We will prob just pick him up on a free at the end of his contract! :-)
    Morning TS – Hope you are ready for another busy day in the land of the Newcastle Utd! :-)
    And it’s Alderwield over anybody for me – a supreme player !
  • 528 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:52 AM
    I’m not really sure what Lambias brings to the club – other than failed negotiations!
    People are still moaning and b1tching about Ashley but I’ve gotta give the bloke some credit – yes this COULD’VE been done in the summer and should’ve been done in the summer. But as a business man learning how to run and football team – he has made mistakes and appears to he learning from them.
  • 529 Transfer Sage // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:56 AM
    Alderwield for me..great potential to become top class but already a very good player. Has everything you need from a CB and more (except height…but he is still good in the air and from what I have seen he has the ability to ‘put off’ strikers even if he doesn’t win the header).
    I think van wolfswinkel would be a very good player, 1 in 2 in portugal is a good effort really, still young as well so will only get better. If true would be a phenomenal signing.
    Exciting times ahead indeed. Llambias clearly needs the boot, the only good thing he has done is the carroll sale….and if a team is desperate to pay 35mil i imagine i could have even negotiated that (seems all he did was hang up on them til they offered the amount, not really skilled)…all other signings have been standard market value or we have lost out on them.
  • 530 89Norcal // Jan 23, 2013 at 7:58 AM
    Could snatch up Sissoko for under 3m euros!
    Would be a nice savings in lieu of the raised price we paid for Gouffran.
  • 531 Transfer Sage // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:00 AM
    Exactly….he has corrected his error here and thats all you can ask for now. In the summer he needs to show he has learned from his error and brings in another 2-3 players.
    I was losing faith in Ashley but hopefully this is putting us on the right path.
    And in fairness pardew is learning too….he has got us to pass the ball much better this past month or so…and he admitted after the last game he went too defensive too soon…so also learning.
  • 532 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:01 AM
    Really losing my colo over this colo deal….!!!
    One of the most unprofessional football clubs I’ve ever seen!
  • 533 foggonridiculous // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:02 AM
    At the risk of looking like I’m jumping on the bandwagon I’m pro getting AC back as well.
    He’s a bit marmite – you either love him or hate him – and he made a mistake (haven’t we all in life) going to the bin dippers (be it forced or otherwise) but he adds real menace at front and we miss his defensive presence at set pieces and corners.
    He’d be an upgrade on Shola/replacement for Best.
    Other players left for £iverpool and came back – McDermott, Kennedy, Beardsley…
    Just my opinion but I think – at the right price/wages – his return could be worthwhile
    …..even if it’s only to batter some sense into (R)anger :-)
  • 539 Transfer Sage // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:11 AM
    I have no knowledge of whether players will be released.
    But in my opinion some need to be let go.
    -xisco will be off with his contract up.
    -sammy, fergie, vukic, gosling – all have potential, vukic could be as good as berbatov for me, be an ideal player just behind cisse but he needs a long run to get his career back on track. the other 3 need a full season of football at a good level, championship standard.
    I mean sammy ameobi is held in high regard by england under 21, similar view to zaha so maybe a season in the championship out of his comfort zone is what he needs.
  • 540 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:11 AM
    On a potential clear out this upcoming summer, I’m all for it, as long as we plan to replace. Let’s not forget we had a clear out in the summer and it didn’t work too well.
  • 541 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:15 AM
    I feel it needs to happen to move forward and free up wages for new incomings – which need to be made to push on for next season – god willing we stay in this division.
    Would like to see us hold onto Amalfitano as I think given time he will be a great player. Curtis good is doing himself and us proud for Bradford and the experience he is gaining is priceless. Abeid and Sammi need to go out on loan I feel to push on their development and improve both mentally and physically.
  • 553 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:24 AM
    Tads…Sadly I do think his days are becoming numbered regardless of Colo. Whilst he can be frustrating to watch, his work rate is phenomenal. Once the team takes it’s shape though and we’re less reliant on covering players like Guti is at the minute, where does he fit in and would he be happy to be on the bench?
    The pain of possible progress. Not calling it progress yet, as whilst this window is looking good, the summer will tell the whole story for me on Ashleys intentions for Newcastle United.
  • 554 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:24 AM
    Biabiany would be icing on the cake this window. But I can see him being priced out of a move.
  • 555 Spuggy // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:24 AM
    So with Hiadara, Gouffran and Mbiwa in the bag, the big issues that remain that could shape our season are:
    - Colo staying
    - Sissoko coming
    - A top class striker coming???
  • 556 geordie157 // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:26 AM
    Summer will be interesting, the likes of tav, fergs, Sammy, vuckic all could benefit from loans. Gosling either sell or loan out. Amalfitano maybe needs a loan too, think he could do with one this season.
    Xisco and Simpson will be gone. Harps maybe? Hope Jonas and wilo get sold. We’d need to bring in a lot of players though. I still think Douglas might join on a free
  • 557 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:28 AM
    Torq…I’m thinking Ashley has realised if he doesn’t stop playing with the fans mental health he will risk being sued for millions. Far better to just buy some players.
    Geordie157…Not sure, when did the French national team last play at Wembley? :)
  • 558 89Norcal // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:28 AM
    Biabiany, that guy is insanely fast. Not the best finisher but obviously anyone with that kind of pace is dangerous.
  • 559 Transfer Sage // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:28 AM
    I think Owen was a brilliant signing ruined by injuries.
    He signed, we were on the up again, had a good team around him, scored 7 in 10, suffered 2 long term injuries and came back without his pace in a team struggling against the drop. Lost his motivation.
    If he had never injured his knee he would have been world class for us.
  • 560 Transfer Sage // Jan 23, 2013 at 8:30 AM
    IF vukic stays fit and has a loan out to a championship team we will have a real player on our books.
    Shame he can never seem to shake the injuries.
    It’s been very good to hear that Ashley has got directly involved in the signings and not just there on hand at the very end to sign off the deals. Fair play to him for showing some agression and intent with transfers at last. (Excellent value transfers, not just doing a Liverpool.)
    I think the Fernandez thing may have got to him and he’s trying to have a similar influence.
    As everyone knows, all these signing should have been done in the summer, but it is most definitely better late than never!
    Was great yesterday and hopefully today is similar in terms on incomings!
