Newcastle Now Favorites To Land Ricky van Wolfswinkel

9:32 am, Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 82 Comments

The news in the Newcastle Journal this morning is that Newcastle are indeed making a move for Sporting Lisbon striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who Newcastle were after in the summer of 2010 when he was still at FC Utrecht, and it seems the Dutch International is open to a move to Newcastle, although it appears that some other clubs are also interested in the 23 year-old.

Sporting CP's Dutch forward Ricky van Wo

Ricky van Wolfswinkel – Newcastle favored to sing striker

It was reported in the Portuguese press yesterday that Newcastle were in the lead to land the £10M rated striker, although it seems that Tottenham, Liverpool and Cologne are also interested in the player.

van Wolfswinkel’s agent Lous Laros has not denied there is Newcastle interest in his client, but it seems that Sporting Lisbon would want very good money to part with their top scorer, half way through the season.

This is what Laros told the Journal:

“I won’t name specific clubs as that is a private matter, but what I will say is there is big interest in Ricky from England.” “I have passed on this information to Sporting and it is up to them to come to any agreement and then we could negotiate.”

“Can something happen this month? In football, you just never know what might happen. We are laid-back about the situation.” “Ricky is like any player in that he is ambitious and the Premier League is a fantastic place. He is happy for the moment in Lisbon. There have been reports that he has requested a transfer, but that is not true.”

“I know the club well. I spoke to them a lot in the summer when they tried to buy Luuk de Jong, who is also our player. They are not in such a good position right now in the league, but that is a good club.”

Newcastle have moved with lightning speed to sign Mapouu Yanga-Mbiwa of Montpelier yesterday, and are also lined up to sign Nancy’s left back Maassadio Haidara and Bordeaux striker Yoan Gouffran today.

Newcastle are also after French International midfielder Moussa Sissoko, and the reports are that Newcastle will sign him on a pre-contract agreement and he will move in the summer – but why wouldn’t Toulouse accept a fee from Newcastle this month and make the deal permanent?

They’ll get nothing for him in the summer, so we think that’s what’s going to happen with Moussa (we hope it does too) – but it would be great if we can also get Ricky van Wolfswinkel through the door too.

Comments welcome.

    Now this is getting ridiculous
Who cares bout African nations from last thread tiotie won’t be in this team when he gets ack ,it will serve the very lazy chappie right.
Of course we many just then see the real mr t when he has to compete for his shirt

does anybody think Ashley has been the victim of credit card fraud?

He went to pay for a gregs pasty and somebody stole his details and has been running around buying us these players?

Get more signed before he notices.

  • 7 cndrbrown // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:39 AM

Pretty sweet if we can land this guy as well.
I’m sure it’s Ashley, when the hell have we had this success with lambias doing the talking.
That bushy eyebrows piece of human waste is probably landed a job shampooin Ashley’s bag.
He’d screw that up to I’m sure

  • 8 WesJameson // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:40 AM

It’s becoming more and more clear….the poison in our club is not MA, but rather DL…he needs to be sacked Mike…You have given him a job to do, he ain’t doing it = time to go….We need a Chris Mort type lad in there, with a smiling friendly face…not that horrible sulking face of DL

Totally shocked and really happy with Mikes contribution to what is looking to be our best ever transfer window…touch wood 🙂

  • 9 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:41 AM

TS….Brilliant. If they could find a way to process it on his bill as either a casino purchase or food he may not cotton on for a while yet.

Yo…It’s all making me slightly nervous…as with any abusive relationship you always have to wonder when things start looking good 🙂

    watch and dream, why not?

  • 11 yorkymag // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:43 AM

Ashley was very badly hurt by the whole remy saga , he is many things but has one massive ego
Tony Fernandez is a pauper in comparison although the Indian backers ave a bob or two
But the papers suggesting Fernandez out foxed Ashley did us a real favour
Beware be very beware of the spurned billionaire

  • 12 Shane // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:43 AM

I hope we get this lad, I would be the envy of all the regulars at my local with his name printed across my back!

Haha are u saying we have a black eye coming before January is out?

  • 14 lewytoon // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:44 AM

why does llambias not do transfers now?

  • 15 Special K // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:44 AM

Despite the fact Llambias is more thaan likely a terrible person, he’s excellent at his job. Once Carr & Pardew identify a player, Llambias goes to work on negotiating a price. He’s ruthless at it & is one of the main reasons we pick up so many bargains. In Freddy Shepard’s case, the club would want say £5m and he’d offer £10m. With Llambias we’re getting quality players for next to nowt.

  • 16 geordie157 // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Wolfswinkel is very similar to Cisse, or am I wrong? Decent striker, but if we can get siem de jong for that he’s much better value.

  • 17 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Okay…if everything goes our way this window (I am almost afraid to write that :)) then surely we have a couple of players we need to offload and a few who we meed to consider going out on loan.

    I am thinking:

    – Simmo (we can still collect a fee)
    – Xisco (maybe someone will take him on loan a pay a part of his wages)

    – Sammi
    – Fergy
    – Abeid
    – Tav

*depending on the outcome of the Colo debacle, we might need another CB!

  • 18 toonluvva // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:46 AM

Wolfswinkel? at first I thought it was a joke posting!

But all credit to MA for getting players in. I just hope that they turn out to be worthy of gracing our famous Black & White stripes.

Oh my God, if all this turns out like all true Toon fans want, I’ve just realised we’ll have to be nice to MA & DL. But I think I could live with that.

    Scores for fun from midfield.

hopefully mbwia is better then his performance on sunday suggested and after watching villa yesterday if we cant beat them we deserve to go down as they were awful
and with regards to ashley getting cheque book out if we had done this when we were in a position of power and built on last season we wouldnt be in the brown stuff now!!!

  • 25 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:50 AM

Don’t get carried away man. They won’t spend for years after this …

  • 26 cndrbrown // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:50 AM

Problem with dl, is he’s almost to cheap. Granted we’ve had some bargains but we’ve got a bad rap in Europe to some degree by placing in some welfare bids. If someone offered us 5mil for Ben arfa. What would they say?
I wonder if they try to land wolfswinkle, and dr Jong (either one) in the summer. And hope poopiss has a good rest of the season and offload him?

  • 27 BigKirky // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:51 AM

I think Ashley’s offer of an extra large Sports Direct mug (not Llambias) sealed it for Mapou.

  • 28 John Tudor // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:51 AM

@ big bob yes but it would cost a damn site more that what weve paid now

  • 29 WWYCD // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:52 AM

RVW we need more than Siem at the moment I would say, we have Cabs, Marv and HBA who can play the CAM role but only Cisse who can really play out and out striker (Sholas a grand impact sub but thats all these days) and Gouffran will be a winger for us surely seems to be where he is best suited imo

I think Siem is a summer target (probably the same with RVW tbh but u never know)

  • 33 derekm // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:53 AM

Even though lambias comes across as out of his depth this year you can’t dismiss previous signings under his control. For me Ashley realised he could’nt risk delays in this window due to the league position and had to come in face first – you can imagine trying to get him to OK things at the end of a phone line what with all his other business dealings was a slow and fraught process, so to say that things have moved quicker with Ashley hands on is a bit out of order. Still like Chris Mort back though – or even better a specialist footy knowledgeable MD

Worrying how we are going to fit the new players onto Ed’s header….Welcome to Newcastle upon Seine

  • 37 LooneyToon41 // Jan 23, 2013 at 9:54 AM

@15 Special K. Very interesting, and to some degree i have to agree with you. It’s ok having a great scout (Carr), but what we are really seeing in motion is long term relationship/admin management by ’employees’ of the club, as these signings have not been clutched from mid air. If it wasn’t for Fat Harry &co, Remy would be here too, so there has been a lot of work going on with clubs, agents, players way before Jan 1st…

Somebody is doing a very good job indeed… and it’s all about Ashley making the money available.
This whole idea (as posted on this blog) of NUFC setting up an office in Paris all seems to be bearing fruit…. and i for one, laughed it off as ridiculous! I guess i was wrong! 😉

Would be nice to see some ENglish players coming in problem is the decent ones (Zaha) cost a small fortune. We could field a team with oinly 1 englishman (Saylor) in it. Maybe none sad really when you look at SBR’s team which was full of English/British.

Outside of Newcastle life, how does Di Santo get in the Argentina squad???!?!?

  • 50 TorqToon // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:04 AM

Yo – I still fully believe he will come to us. Not heard that he he definitely coming to the club today but I know fee’s are being discussed as Toulouse want some money out of the deal rather than he come to us for free in the summer.

Don’t be surprised to see him announced today or tomorrow. He was always ‘supposed’ to meet with QPR today for talks – but ever since it was revealed he has entered into a pre contract – that meeting is pointless – with QPR now saying they “never wanted him in the frat place!”

  • 51 BigKirky // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:04 AM

Shire, it could have also been a reversed Kangol flat cap, Samuel L. Jackson style.

So many clinchers in there, it is unreal. “Mapou, we can even offer you some shin pads as part of the deal, as well as a golf set and some medium weighted kettle bells for your leisure activities here in Newcastle.”

    Signed sealed and delivered yesterday.

  • 52 Transfer Sage // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:04 AM

llambias is garbage at his job for me.

Missed out on players like debuchy, de jong and douglas in the summer as he could not negotiate a fee…no problem but he persisted and then never had time for other targets.

The players we got have been market value, santon, anita, cisse,….all the normal sort of fee you’d expect for that level of player.

He may have saved the odd bit here and there but left us woefully short of players by doing that.

Cabaye was a bargain but with a release clause anyone could have done that deal.

Mike Ashley has totally shown llambias up to be the idiot that he clearly is.

  • 53 yorkymag // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:05 AM

Hey don’t be nasty to willo

I hope he gets a top club in the championship and he deserves it

  • 56 Abbott // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:06 AM

If we get Ricky and sort out a quick deal for Sissoko in January – I will celebrate and get heavy drunk!

This season is hard to take – especially as I cannot disagree with a lot of decisions made.
Generally I think we have played well but had tons of bad luck – we have also been sloppy at times, we could be good for 80 mins and horrible for 10 mins.

I can also somewhat understand the thinking about not investing last summer cose we wanted to see how our younger players would work out – benefit of hindsight we should have strengthened, but its easy to say now. I understand why we didnt…

Off course some tactical decisions have been poor during this season, but generally
I think we have done a lot of things “right” – we just had a lot of bad luck with some key players under-performing (tiote, guiterrez, cisse etc) as well as most injured players in the PL.

Once again I think we do whats rationally good. We invest heavily in players that our squad requires…

This is very positive… I still think the crucial point is to promote cabaye to captain regardless if Colo stays or goes. It will give the whole team a boost – Especially now with this many new french players…

  • 57 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:07 AM

Tsunki….I was thinking that maybe Sir Alex was misunderstood the other week. When he said “Wee club” do you think he was saying the yes club as in the French guys say yes to us?

  • 58 WWYCD // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:08 AM

Hard to argue mate constantly expect the worst from our forward thinking owners

Good to hear mate I think he would be another coup for us this window if he does end up coming in Tiote would be pushed for his place Anita would get more time and competition and we would have depth. Seems to be a real warrior in the middle of the park as well which we need for our relegation worries

  • 59 Rozzy // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:10 AM

Don’t know much about this lad but my preferred choice would have to be Seydou Doumbia from CSKA Moscow. He’s Senegalese so can help Cisse, has bags of pace, strength and scores a ton of goals. He can be played as the main striker or even along side Cisse as he is a different kind of player unlike Ba so they can work together. He can also play out on the wing which is exactly what we are looking for.

  • 60 Sazzer // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:11 AM

  • 69 sirtoongospel // Jan 23, 2013 at 10:20 AM

Are some if you lot joking or what? Llambias can’t negotiate a fee so it’s his fault? Who do you think writes the cheques and ok’s our transfers? One man and one man only.

The club put a value on a player, that comes from Carr, Pardew etc and then the board will not pay a penny more. Debuchy was bought for what we offered in the summer. They backed down not us.

When players come in its brilliant business and we all praise them, but if it falls through they are wankers. They have a business plan and stick to it to the letter. Rightly or wrongly. But the final decision lies with one man. Llambias does what he is told, to suggest otherwise is ludicrous!! He can’t decide how much money he can spend.

  • 75 Greebol1892 // Jan 23, 2013 at 11:14 AM

I couldn’t give a hoot who plays up-front (except no.23) as long as we change our system and actually try and get some service to our starved main stiker (Cisse) which would mean some quality balls into the box! The guy has been playing out wide most of the season and when he gets in the middle he’s fed on scraps. OK he ‘missed’ some chances against Reading (amazing stops by the goalie) but I’m tired of people slagging him off for being offside all the time when ACTUALLY he doesn’t get the ball played to him quick enough! S.O.S. – SUPPLY OUR STRIKERS!

  • 76 Greebol1892 // Jan 23, 2013 at 11:20 AM

Blown away by this January window though! I am firmly behind Pardew and it would seem the board is the same by this show of support to his request for players. Wow and some players of true quality! The club is in a great period of stability even though struggling on the pitch and obviously caught in the relegation s*it. Through thick and thin HOWAY THE LADS.

Hats off to the Newcastle financial team. Yes, its 5 months too late. Yes, its only money already generated by player sales. Yes, we still need another top striker. And there needs to be a clear-out in the summer and a policy of continued improvement of the squad.
But they’re not shy bairns and clearly, when they put themselves out, they can make the signings. I hope we see much more of it and at these prices, it can only be good for the balance sheet. Suddenly, there may even be renewed appetite for the Europa Cup!

  • 82 Carl Cort // Jan 24, 2013 at 1:54 AM

we need a top striker that hasn’t played in europe to have more of a chance in the europa league . i just can’t see ashley paying the transfere fee or wages.
