Newcastle Launch €3M Bid For Top French Midfielder

11:13 am, Friday, January 25th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 79 Comments

It seems that Newcastle have launched a bid for Bastia’s 19 year-old midfielder Florian Thauvinm,  and although Arsenal are interested – they have yet to put in any bid for the player.

Florian Thauvin 99

Florian Thauvinm - Newcastle have launched a bid for the youngster

And the news today is that Bastia Chairman Pierre-Marie Geronimi has said the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called him twice about Florian, but that the London club has yet to put in a firm bid for the player.

Newcastle are reported to have put in an initial bid of €3M (£2.4M) for the French U21 International, and the deal would be that the player will return to play for Bastia through the end of the season, and Bastia will receive 15% of any follow on profit should Newcastle sell the player in the future.

This is what Pierre-Marie Geronimi said on the club’s web-site today:

“We have not received any firm offer from Arsenal and, thus, there is no question of the €5 million reported.” “This week I have had Arsene Wenger on the phone twice. He expressed his interest in the player to us, but it has not gone beyond that.”

“I should be extremely clear on this subject once more to give our supporters the whole truth. The club has only today received a firm offer for Florian and it comes from Newcastle.” “They propose a €3 million fee, with the player staying at Bastia until June and 15 per cent of the value of a future sale.”

“We are considering the proposal and will decide quickly.”

That last sentence is a communication to Arsenal to please put in a bid, but why Chairman talk openly about impending transfer deals – we have no idea.

It would be great if Newcastle can tie up Thauvinm – who will be one for the future, and will join Newcastle in the summer, if  the Tyneside club  can sign him on the dotted line this month.

Ashley needs to get involved more often if all this comes off.

Any word on the RVW, PEA or Graham bids getting progressed?

  • 4 rainrix // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:17 AM

Right guys i just had a look in the sun and they had a small article on all our new players… They have gouffran quoted as saying “it is the club i needed to, why not, be a springboard to look elsewhere afterwards you never know”

Has anyone else seen that or are the sun completely talking out of their arses? (Shocking i know) If its bs i may just complain.

Might want to ask a Frenchman, but Chateauneuf is indeed NewCastle, not Chateau Nouveau.

    …and shut it, Belfats :)

  • 6 toon1707 // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Can anyone who has seen him play give me some info on this lad as I have never heard of him is he a defensive or attacking player or is he central or wing and most importantly is he any good or better than we already have. Thanks

  • 7 Toon73 // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:18 AM

    Flauvin IN !

    Surely? We’re looking at 5 in 5

Ashley’s in the middle of a mid-life crisis and may it coninue on :)

  • 8 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Let’s hope Mike Ashley really wants this lad, he sounds quite a prospect.

  • 9 Edd Case // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:20 AM

    Ed it’s ‘Florian Thauvin’.
There is no ‘m’ on the end of his name.

  • 10 tequilamag // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:23 AM

only 6 days left in the transfer window and a mere 5 new players in. When will fans wake up and smell the coffee?
This chronic lack of ambition is proof that Ashley only bought Newcastle to ruin the club. Where is my bedsheet.
    Allez les Toon

    Gosling, Vuckic, Abeid anyone?

  • 12 Tekkers29 // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:27 AM

He is a attacking midfielder but can play out wide or behind the striker. if we can get this kid it would be a big deal as this kid will go all the way. i have seen him play 6 or 7 times and i think he’s ready to step up to the premier league.

also has a sweet left foot

  • 15 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Young players aren’t guaranteed to improve.
That’s why they cost 3-5M, I’m guessing but if 1 in 10 succeed … good scouting helps improve the odds slightly.

  • 16 Spreadthetoon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:30 AM

I have heard that Lille are interested in Florian and some suggest that that is his preference. Personally I am not too sure about this as I could seriously think that Florian could very well start for us in a 4-4-2 on the left. Please sign this player, bags of potential and is only going to get better and better. He will play regularly even if it is to relieve Jonas for half a match! Thauvin, please come to le Toon!

Innocent or guilty. Jus get rid for gods sake

  • 18 TorqToon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

    Repost on Thauvin…

TS – I like him. He is young still, but has truly world class potential.

What fits for Newcastle united is his desired position of wide left. He is rated very highly in France with view to replacing ‘the old guard’ of les bleu at some point. A left foot to die for and skill to match.

Not prolific when it comes to scoring goals, but I feel with better players around him he will score plenty.

  • 19 Spreadthetoon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

Ranger is a continual disgrace and his recent antics should see his pay and contract immediately terminated. We’ve put up with this lad and his silly antics on too many occasions and he is more interested in being a “Gangster” than a “Footballer”…..what a waste

  • 20 ~Anita One Bites the Dust~ // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:34 AM

I’m at the point where… I’d be happy if we paid a club to get Ranger off us.

  • 21 Spreadthetoon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:35 AM

What your take on Thauvin? Do you think we stand a good chance of landing the youngster? Like I said I seem him as a potential replacement for Jonas in a 4-4-2….

  • 22 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Maybe we could send Ranger to OM to join up with Barton ;) lol

  • 23 yorkymag // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:35 AM

I agree summarily terminate his contract. Today

  • 24 Spreadthetoon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:36 AM

    SSN states:-
According to France Football, Newcastle remain keen to add to their ever-increasing French contingent, with St Etienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bastia’s Florian Thauvin, Lille’s Nicolas Isimat-Mirin and Guingamp’s Gianelli Imbula all said to be on Alan Pardew’s wanted list.

  • 25 Spreadthetoon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:37 AM

Just think that Ranger’s wages could be used to sign a lad like Florian Thauvin…no contest and a no brainer really! :)

  • 26 BelfastMagpie // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Time for Ranger to go. Something different every week now. The guy’s a joke.

  • 27 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:38 AM

  • 28 thespecialone-ameobi // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:39 AM

What the hell is ranger playing at. I’d be on my best behaviour and work my hardest for 100 pound a week. He gets 10thohsand a week and can’t stay out off trouble!!!

  • 29 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:39 AM

If he case is solid he won’t get bail.
    Sympathy for the poor lass.

He could go down for years. Then his contract can be torn up.
Until then lots and lots of bad publicity for us.

  • 30 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Imbula is a very promising young DM

  • 31 Rotonda heights // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Thauvin would be great. I think we are going to be ok now regardless of Pardew . You couldn’t really have 5 full current French internationals and screw it up.

Seriously though if Pardew still plays Jonas and Shola, I will not be amused.

Can we now just get rid of Ranger. Innocent or not. Just had enough of this clown endlessly dragging the name of NUFC down all the time. Maybe we should get Ashley more hands on with this as well. It’s probably a false claim and a stitch up but he’s just an unwanted distraction wherever he goes.

  • 32 Rotonda heights // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:44 AM

could you imagine that lot on top!!!! I wonder if old Carr was just getting so p…d off that no one was following up on his targets. He’s certainly earning his crust now.

maybe losing to reading was a good thin to have sparked all this

  • 33 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:47 AM

The club can always pay him his contract and release his registration.

I’m not sure what he’s on. 30k? for another 3 years?
It would cost around 4.5M using my guestimate figures. Plus any bonuses.

  • 34 Transfer Sage // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:47 AM

    Ranger is always in trouble.

Whether this is proven or not we have to get shot of him. There have been plenty of disciplinary problems already…arrests, convictions, unprofessional, not turning up for training, insulting fans, etc etc

Just terminate his contract even if it means we have to pay the lot off now….just get him out the cub.

  • 35 Conaldo (The Wizard...Also Bestest Friends With Paul Scharner) // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:47 AM

What formation do we think will best utilise our players now?

Arguably our strongest position is cm, so maybes playing with 3cm, and width coming from full backs would work?

    I think this would work.

    Debuchy Mbiwa Colo Santon
    Sissokho Anita Cabaye
    Cisse Gouffran

(Untill Ben arfa gets back, and tiote)

4312 would leave us narrow, but as I said the width would come from the fullbacks. This formation would allow us to play through the middle, using our strongest players.

  • 36 surreytoon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Can we please not mention Ranger? I am sick of hearing about him.

Good to hear we are after more players although they are probably summer targets. Especially like that we are after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Isimat-Mirin. We definitely need another striker and Central defender.

  • 37 TorqToon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Spread – I think we stand a very good chance. The club are willing to sell – just a bit of confusion over the details. They want us to loan him back until the summer – but we want him this window.

Bastia are a very player orientated club and realise their players will move on to bigger clubs, so can’t see them holding him back.
I do see him more as a wide left of a front 3 kinda player though. And €3mil euros is a lot – but looking from and investment perspective – it’s good value.

  • 38 last minute window lies // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:49 AM

TS , here here, couldnt agree more

  • 39 gndtoon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang … i hope this rumor is true, he would take us to the top 6 and beyond. A similar, (hopefully more sporting) version of Remy.

  • 40 TorqToon // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Conaldo – I would like to see us utilise 2 “CDM’s” to allow our fullbacks to press forward. Anita / Tiote and Sissoko.

Sissoko is very much a deep lying midfielder who likes to pick the ball up and run with it, Anita/Tiote would add protection to our back line.

  • 41 John Tudor // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Won’t get carried away as its SSN and they are generally lazy journals going on the back of twitter… lets just see – think Mirin & PEA is off the mark as both clubs have stated that their player is not going anywhere but time will tell.

  • 47 pawl250 // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:53 AM

GK – Krul, Harper, Elliot, Alnwick

DF – Debuchy, Simpson, Tavernier, Mbiwa, STaylor, Williamson, Coloccini, Streete, Santon, Haidara, RTaylor, Ferguson

MD – Ben Arfa, Obertan, Marveaux, Cabaye, Tiote, Gosling, Anita, Vuckic, Sammy, Amalfitano, Bigirmana, Sissoko, Jonas, Perch

FW – Cisse, Gouffran, Shola, Ranger, Campbell, Xisco

Pretty much our team right now. (Providing we sign Sissoko)

My opinion we need the following to happen in the next 12-18 month.

Simpson – Simply not good enough, sell now for 1m rather than letting him leave for nothing. – 1m

RTaylor – on a reported 45k a week! For a back up player, who is not really good enough we should let him go if we can get a fee. – 1m

Williamson (arguably a good squad player) hes awful, but he can do an very average job and we need back up given STaylor injury prone. I would keep unless replaced. Aim for him to be a back up, of a back up!

Gosling – Too injury prone, I would only keep if he improved, especially with his injury record. – 1m

Amalfitano (arguably a good squad player) Still clearly not good enough to even push likes of Sammy off the bench.

Ranger – Trouble, he is just a thug. Get rid, even for free if Barton was allowed, then why not this guy. He is a bad influence on our players. FREE

Xisco – Get rid, unfair to not be given a chance but 50k a week, he has to leave in the summer when contract is up. FREE

Thauvin – Potential to be a big star, happy to be linked with him. 3m

Douglas – cheap, especially if we get him on a pre arranged contract. This would cover Colo in the summer if he still desires to leave. For free, hardly no risk and arguably the best CB in Dutch league. – FREE

PEA – Tall, strong, quick are the desired trademarks of a striker. We should be after him not RVW. Would be my first choice. – 8m

Carroll – If we can get him for 7m why not? Hes english, one of us and is better than Shola, in a similar role. I would like to see his return. – 7m

S De Jong – Very good player! would take him as an attacking midfield role. – 8m

Overall we would actually have a young, very strong SQUAD not starting 11 and rotation can be used! Wont actually cost much either!

  • 48 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 25, 2013 at 11:54 AM

TS…I hear what you are saying and I know what you mean (enough is enough), but I do think we have a responsibility to get him back on the right track – if not as a footballer then as a human being!

Would be amazing if we were to land Thauvin. The fact that he could play left of sit in the hole as a supporting striker is a very interesting predicament to be in…….I don’t think we’ve ever had that predicament have we……so far this season its been square pegs in round holes…….going forwards its just round pegs where ever you like, the combinations are far greater than a rubix cube……..ooohhhh the possibilities! NR is not the club’s responsibility, he’s not a kid – it’s now more down to the probation service. Sacking him years ago would have sent a clear message that might have shocked him into straightening up – instead he has been pampered with a flash car and £3.5k per week for doing bugger all but winding people up and getting in trouble.

Spare the rod and all that. He’s a loser, end of, and he will only get worse.

Hi i’m french and curious to know of what the fans of “Newcastle” think of the French mercato. And on Thauvin I can say to you that he( has a big quality of percussion. He( plays very forwards and manages to eliminate the opponents in movement. Especially, he possesses a very good left foot. Where he needs to progress, it is already the (experiment. He has to chain the matches and the credit note less waste in his game by purifying it. And he has to win in physics. Sorry for my bad english it’s not a legend french sucks in English :)
