We expect Moussa Sissoko to be the fourth Frenchman to arrive at the club this week alone, and there is a decent possibility that Newcastle could add three more players to the squad, before the month is out.
Jack Butland - England International goalkeeper
It seems that Mike Ashley has realized he made a major mistake in the summer by not reinforcing the squad, and with Newcastle in relegation trouble he probably thought what it would be like for Newcastle to be relegated for the second time in four years – and that’s the very last thing he wants – and it’s also the very last thing the Newcastle fans want too.
I thought what it would be like to be relegated in May and I had to quickly rush to the toilet to vomit.
Over this last week Mike has got fully involved with the transfers, and he has overseen four new players arriving on Tyneside, and we think he will still try to sign up more players this month, although he may let a couple of them be loaned back to their clubs.
Newcastle are interested in Birmingham’s England and Great Britain goalkeeper – 19 year-old Jack Butland – who stands 6’5″ tall, and his club want to sell Jack in January to get some money into the club that Lee Clark currently manages.
And it could be that it’s less than £4M that could see Newcastle bring him to Newcastle – and then he would be loaned back to Birmingham City for the rest of the season to get first team games and build up his experience.
It’s a strange move for Newcastle, and will signal to Dutch International Tim Krul that his place will come under pressure next season, unless he shows the form he showed last season.
But it’s nothing more than Newcastle ensuring that every single position on the field is competitive.
And it would be novel to sign an Englishman too.
As we reported earlier today Newcastle have already bid €3M for Bastia’s 19 year-old French midfielder Florian Thauvinm, and if we are successful in recruiting the top youngster – the club will loan him back to Bastia for the rest of the season so he can continue to get first team games.
And finally Newcastle still need another top striker to go with the three we now have on board in Papiss Cisse, Shola Ameobi and the newly signed Yoan Gouffran, and the news in Portugal is that Newcastle have contacted Sporting Lisbon about former target Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who we were interested in when he was still at FC Utrecht back in the summer of 2010.
And the strange thing about Ricky is that he’s not French.
Ricky would cost close to £10M, but far better get him into the squad this month so he can play a third of the season, and then come August in pre-season, Newcastle should be ready to launch an attack on the top six in the Premier League, and we should have our best squad for many a season.
It will be interesting to see how many players Mike Ashley can get over the line before the transfer window ends next Thursday, but if we can get the above three to Newcastle – it would be simply fantastic – and who said Newcastle didn’t have ambition?
