Newcastle United Linked With Standard Liege Midfielder

9:41 pm, Saturday, January 26th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 51 Comments

Newcastle have been linked again with French midfielder William Vainqueur, who we were linked with earlier this month.  The player was born in Neuilly-sur-Marne in France (where else? ) and started his career at Nantes, before joining Belgium club Standard Liege in August of  2011 on a five year contract, and he has one cap for the France U21 side, which he picked up back in 2009.

William Vainqueur

William Vainqueur – Newcastle interested?

The defensive midfielder stands 5’11″ tall and has so far played 66 times for Liege and scored four goals in the Jupiler Pro League.  Earlier in the month Southampton were also interested in the player but we’re not sure whether the south coast club are still interested in Vainqueur.

Newcastle could be interested because it seems the player has recently fallen out with the Liege coach Mircea Rednic, who said this about his player a couple of weeks ago:

“I’ve told Vainqueur he needs to take more responsibility.”

Newcastle are preparing an offer for the 24-year-old midfielder, according to the Belgian daily Derniere Heure.

Vainqueur is said to be rated at around £2.5M, and he has a five year deal at Liege which runs out in  2016, but it does seem that Newcastle are still trying to bring in new players in January.

Of course Newcastle could be interested in the player for a summer transfer, although the club have already brought in five Frenchman so far in this January transfer window.

He’s another Frenchman – so we suppose that makes it possible he could be joining Newcastle before next Friday rolls around. :D

make this a summer signing we need a Striker IMO

  • 2 DanRo // Jan 26, 2013 at 9:44 PM

I think this would be highly unlikely for several reasons:
    1) overload of midfield options
    2) Sissoko has just been acquired
    3) more money would have to be spent
    4) A winger/striker is more needed

  • 3 SupaToonKid // Jan 26, 2013 at 9:51 PM

Tioté, Sissoko, Anita, Perch, Jonas, Cabaye, Bigirimana all can play CDM. We do not need another! A forward is a must however!

  • 4 jeraziah // Jan 26, 2013 at 9:58 PM

I dont think this one is necessary. As said above we have plenty of options for the CM/DM role.

Striker/LW has to be main priority. RvW or Dries Mertens would be awesome.

  • 5 cndrbrown // Jan 26, 2013 at 9:59 PM

Get a striker, this lads services are not required at the present time

  • 6 nightfa11 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:00 PM

    we have:

cabaye, tiote, anita, moussa, marveuax, bigi…and 4 other CMs to sell (abeid – looks like it, gosling, perch, amalfitano – i guess) + mbiwa can play there..and jonas…colo….raylor..

where will this vainqueur play? i think in summer there will be a massive clearout.. 10 players out?=)

  • 7 alanrichie // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:00 PM

Yeah highly doubt this to be the case.

We need a striker its good news we are at least looking following PEA’s rejection.

    P.S Spread the Ashley love

I think we could be cleaning house if this is true. We should be striving to improve the quality and there’s no guarantee that some of our signings will cut the mustard. Good to have plenty of options. Allows us to sell the dross. However as a priority we should be signing another striker. Then a backup keeper or one to challenge krul, but land would be ideal. Next we need our signings to gel and fire us up the league.

Why would we want this guy ?

  • 10 DanRo // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:12 PM

    On Villa this forthcoming Tuesday.
    I’ll predict again…
Guitterez to start. Gouffran to play right wing/cf like Cisse was and Ameobi did against Reading.
No Yanga-Mbiwa. Steven Taylor to start.

  • 11 GeordieToon89 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Personally think this lad was a fall back option if we couldnt get Sissoko theres no way we’ll sign him now, we dont need him atall

  • 12 yo-yo // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:15 PM

    any news of RVW ?

  • 13 Unbelievable Tekkers // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:21 PM

I agree with you I think that’s what Pardew will go for. I’m leaning towards Sissoko on the bench with the same 3 in the middle as against Reading. Before anybody slates me that’s not the team I would pick but the one I think Pards will.

  • 14 DanRo // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:23 PM

@unbelievable tekkers. I agree, not the team I would pick. But the team I believe Pardew will pick. I would love to be proven wrong.

  • 16 GeordieToon89 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:26 PM

A think Sissoko and possibly Gouffran will be the only ones to start.. Mbiwa will be on the bench but a think Taylor might start with Colo

  • 17 GeordieToon89 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Tell yous who looks a cracking young striking prospect, seen quite abit of him this season… Matej Vydra he’s only 20 but he’s quick and skilful and has a cracking eye for goal, on loan at Watford from Udinese, scored 16 in 18 starts for Watford

  • 18 GeordieToon89 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:31 PM

A hate articles like that, At no point does it state in that story that we’ve bid or anything

  • 19 magpiesyd // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:32 PM

agree with the majoraty of u lads we need another striker,we can look again at this lad in the summer if we need him.As for the villa game lets wait and see who pards picks to start, he may just surprise us all,so lets not start putting the mockers on whats been a good week.

  • 20 naptoon // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Dont get me wrong he’d be unreal but a just highly doubt this is true

  • 27 naptoon // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:40 PM

only cos its telegraph im hoping … mirror mail independent … different story

  • 28 geordiejamie89 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:41 PM

I don’t think there is much behind this rumour. Newcastle are after a striker, and they have been looking at attacking midfielders most suited to playing just behind the striker. aubameyang is a must!

  • 29 Paps // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:41 PM

A none african striker might be nice so that we dont lose them half through the season for two months

  • 30 yo-yo // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Bony would be a better choice than RVW imo

  • 31 geordiejamie89 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:43 PM

Or failing that Wilfried Bony would also be class!

  • 32 ronjohno // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:43 PM

If the wilfried bony story is true and it actually happens then I know I am dreaming.
Only seen on YOUTUBE but looks the part

  • 33 naptoon // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:43 PM

messi would be best rekon ash would go to 150 mill ……

  • 34 naptoon // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:46 PM

not all prolific erediv strikers transfer it to prem … kezman that mug boro bought forget his name …

  • 35 donkeypunch // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:46 PM

Wilfried Bony wow what a sighing that would be such good composure on the ball long shots are good aswell strong as an ox aswell

  • 36 Mancgeordie // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:47 PM

There are no links but what about Thierry bifouma the young French striker at espanyol very quick but only 20 might cost abit to get though? What you think lad’s?

  • 37 Minato // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:47 PM

I agree.. Bony for me… Would make the perfect window for me..

  • 38 Beattie25 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:49 PM

As much as I would love Bony, I cannot see it happening.

It seems as if we have identified our weaknesses and are currently strengthening. The area we are weakest a is that LW.

Gouffran is a CF. Fast, strong and a good finisher.

We don’t really need Bony, PEA or RVW at this moment in time. They can wait until the Summer. What we need is a live wire SS/LW who can really create chances for the strikers.

    I think that’s what we should/will do.

  • 39 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:51 PM

I would prefer van Wolfswinkel to Boney.

They are both good players but we would lose Boney to the AFCON competition every time it is played!

Ricky has just been called up to the Dutch National Team for the friendly against Italy on 6 Feb, after he,s played in that his price will probably go up as its his first cap.So if we go for van Wolfswinkel we need to get him before the summer, and preferably next week!

Vitesse Arnem will be asking at least 15Mil Euro,s before they even consider selling Boney. The club ( Vitesse ) have lost their last two games after Boney left to play in Africa earlier this month.

  • 40 naptoon // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:52 PM

    tom ince beattie …

  • 41 jeraziah // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:52 PM

Good amout of goal by Kony however, my granny could score in the Eredivise/Dutch league. Remeber Afonso Alves? he scored 45 in 39 games for Heerenveen, went to Middlesbrough and was a total nightmare… So im not really sure about this one.. £12m is alot of money.

  • 42 SupaToonKid // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:54 PM

Wilfried Bony would be a phenomenal signing. Cissé & him battling it out to start every week would be fantastic. I still Aubamayeng because of his ability out wide as well as down the middle but Bony would be a terrific player so powerful and strong. Bony & Sissoko would batter opposition defences!

  • 43 naptoon // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:55 PM

alves thats who i couldnt remember (34)

  • 44 SupaToonKid // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:56 PM

    *would prefer

  • 45 Beattie25 // Jan 26, 2013 at 10:59 PM

Yeah Tom Ince, Dries Mertens, Jermain Lens, Youness Belhanda, Nacer Chadli, Ryad Boudebouz, Miralem Sulejmani, André Schürrle (ha ha ha), Julian Draxler (Ho ho ho), etc…

  • 46 Novocastrian66 // Jan 26, 2013 at 11:02 PM

Beattie we have two top strikers Cisse and Gouffran we need more than two. We need to have options on the bench that can be game changers.

  • 47 naptoon // Jan 26, 2013 at 11:02 PM

Can’t wait to see sissoko and the other signings play for us. Heard so much about sissoko of you guys.. Cant wait to see him tear up the villa midfield!! HWTL!!

  • 50 fcnewcastle // Jan 26, 2013 at 11:07 PM

“I’ve told Vainqueur he needs to take more responsibility???””

If he needs to be told then what does that say?

  • 51 donkeypunch // Jan 26, 2013 at 11:17 PM

NEWEXPATMAGPIE I would prefer van Wolfswinkel to Boney are you being serious bony is a pefect number 9 player has all the physical atributes to cope with premier leage we could really compete for title next year with him hes that good begging we get this player. but if im really honest cant possibly see us pulling this one of even at 15 20 million hes worth it
