It now seems almost certain that Mike Ashley is trying desperately to bring in a top striker to Newcastle this month, so that Alan Pardew has four experienced strikers to choose from, for the first time this season.
Yoan Gouffran – not the only striker through the door in January?
Even after bringing in five Frenchmen for around £16M this month, Newcastle do not seem finished in the transfer market, and we have been linked with midfielder William Vainqueur of Standard Liege, and we made a bid of €3M for Bastia’s top 19 year-old French midfielder Florian Thauvin, which was turned down.
Newcastle have been linked in the last 24 hours with the potential £12M transfer of Vitesse striker Wilfried Bony, the Ivory Coast International, and only yesterday St. Etienne turned down a €10.5M bid (£8.6M) for their 23 year-old striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
And today we have been linked with Reading’s 29 year-old Russian International striker Pavel Pogrebnyak.
So it seems that Mike Ashley is still after at least two more players before the window closes on Thursday – with a top striker his main target – and that’s in addition to Bordeaux striker Yoan Gouffran who joined us last week.
After we lost to Reading at home eight days ago, it’s been a whirlwind of transfer activity with the Newcastle owner completely hands on in this transfer window.
Mike’s showing that he does have some ambitions for Newcastle United, and he certainly doesn’t want Newcastle to become a Championship side again, that’s for sure, and he’s surprising a lot of Newcastle fans by the way he is bringing some significant top class talent to Newcastle this month.
And while he is driven to save Newcastle from relegation as his first priority - the players he is bringing in are top class, and Newcastle’s squad for next season, if we survive in the Premier League, will be our best squad for many a season.
Sounds good to us.
