Mike Ashley Still Wants Top Striker At Newcastle In January

9:11 am, Sunday, January 27th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 32 Comments

It now seems almost certain that Mike Ashley is trying desperately to bring in a top striker to Newcastle this month, so that Alan Pardew has four experienced strikers to choose from,  for the first time this season.

goufrann

Yoan Gouffran – not the only striker through the door in January?

Even after bringing in five Frenchmen for around £16M this month, Newcastle do not seem finished in the transfer market, and we have been linked with midfielder William Vainqueur of Standard Liege, and we made a bid of €3M for Bastia’s top 19 year-old French midfielder Florian Thauvin, which was turned down.

Newcastle have been linked in the last 24 hours with the potential £12M transfer of Vitesse striker Wilfried Bony, the Ivory Coast International, and only yesterday St. Etienne turned down a €10.5M bid (£8.6M) for their 23 year-old striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

And today we have been linked with Reading’s 29 year-old Russian International striker Pavel Pogrebnyak.

So it seems that Mike Ashley is still after at least two more players before the window closes on Thursday – with a top striker his main target – and that’s in addition to Bordeaux striker Yoan Gouffran who joined us last week.

After we lost to Reading at home eight days ago, it’s been a whirlwind of transfer activity with the Newcastle owner completely  hands on in this transfer window.

Mike’s showing that he does have some ambitions for Newcastle United, and he certainly doesn’t want Newcastle to become a Championship side again, that’s for sure, and he’s surprising a lot of Newcastle fans by the way he is bringing some significant top class talent to Newcastle this month.

And while he is driven to save Newcastle from relegation as his first priority - the players he is bringing in are top class,  and Newcastle’s  squad for next season,  if we survive in the Premier League,  will be our best squad for many a season.

Fact.

Sounds good to us.

He must have banged his head

Really can’t see us getting another in with 4 days left. But I’m still over the moon with our signings. Other clubs and the press just can’t stop talking about us. Either they slate us for our play, or our lack of signings. Now it’s sour grapes for us investing in quality players (who cares where they are from). Cant win can we?

  • 3 Ben3arfa // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:17 AM

Aubameyang would be the icing on the cake . What a player he is !

  • 4 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:23 AM

Four days Left ! I thinkk if we sign anyone else now it will go down to the wire !

After the inactivity in the last window i can say i,m happy with this one so far!

Prefer van wolfswinkel to Boney but heh, these are not the only two we are being linked with?

    Happy times?

Strongly linked with RVW, PEA and now Bony.. we are clearly looking to bring another in. Bony looks strong and knows where the goal is (in a weak league) but appears slow and requires others to create chances for him much like Cisse which has been the problem this season! PEA would be perfect as he can be a creator or scorer of goals with superb pace and would fit in well in a front 3 with Cisse and Ben Arfa. Has anybody actually watched Bony regularly as I’m only going off Youtube videos??

  • 6 Bowzer912 // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:25 AM

I think because Cisse is a poacher who grabs those tap ins and headers as well as the wondergoals so a young pacy striker for support
    Such as:
    Bony-12m
    RvW-10m or 8m+player
    Luis Muriel-15m

  • 7 geordiefromthemidlands // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:26 AM

Why not Lens, scores assists and he can play lw rw and ss. Rapid Technical and will only be around 8m

  • 8 Dennis Twice // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:26 AM

We shall fight on the fields! Fight Toon fight for your premium rights!!!!

  • 9 Sinner // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:28 AM

I still think that our priority should be a left winger, Jonas and Obertan are not good enough.

  • 10 RonVanDam // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:29 AM

I just cant wait till we play A/ Villa. With the team we got, i can see us scoring about 4 goals. To me the missing piece of the puzzle is Pardew. I hope he gets it right with selections and tactics

  • 11 ArtyH // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:30 AM

If he had paid the going rate for Ba’s wages we would not be in this situation now. IMHO its finally got through to those who matter that you cannot just have a good first eleven there must be a second 11 who are almost as good. I think Ba may have stayed if there had been this kind of transfer activity in the summer last year, and we would have been in the top half of the table. This is a knee jerk reaction to our terrible position and has cost Ash dearly. I hope this is another lesson learned by the owner.

  • 12 davybtoon // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:33 AM

I still think we could get a striker n thauvin in this window, then in the summer all we would need is cb to replace colo Douglas on a free, n Siem de Jong 9mill

  • 13 Persian Geordie // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:33 AM

Ba has been out for more than 3 weeks!

can someone get rid of his heed on wor header!

we need a new one with a french theme

  • 14 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:34 AM

    @6:

Good shout on Lens Mate !

  • 15 Rotonda heights // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:35 AM

isn’t 12M what they wanted for PEA

  • 16 RonVanDam // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:35 AM

With the quality purchases we have been making, looks like MA wants to avoid relegation and WIN the europa

  • 17 Oldgit1 // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:37 AM

I’m so impressed with the current signings, but I can see the need for a further striker, what if cissie can’t find his scoring touch and struggles for the rest of the season, we are buggered big style, so it makes sense to try and get another striker, can’t believe that MA also realises this. Good on you so try and get PEA you know he is the man. Get him and I will renew my season ticket after a 3 year absent.

  • 18 Jayden // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:38 AM

Persian, we replaced Ba with Debuchy ages ago…

  • 19 shearer4pm // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:38 AM

just seen this on the sky sport news transfer clockwatch.
San Lorenzo’s promising playmaker Alan Ruiz is wanted by Greek club PAOK but he’ll cost €10million (£8.5m). San Lorenzo president Matias Lammens told Radio La Red: “There has been an approach from a very important team from Greece. The supporters know that we can’t refuse a proposal like this.”

how about a stright swap deal and just get colo out so its not distracting everyone and we can focus on getting up the league

  • 20 valle // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:39 AM

ArtyH… I for one am glad Ba is gone, he was playing for himself and had his sights on a bigger club from the go. Look at his assists for petes sake! Cisse could be scott free in the centre and he wouldnt play him.

  • 21 sandino // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:41 AM

ba isn’t on the header its : willie benny anita santon amalfotano debuchy colo sammy vuckic simpson pardew moyo obertan marve caba cisse jonas perch tiote saylor ameobi krul… there is no demba on the header

  • 22 BDin9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:41 AM

    Persian, that’s Anita

  • 23 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:44 AM

I am not hoping for another paocher or a winfer; I want an inside forward who can play on the left.

It is 4-3-3 for me so I am not looking forward to another spell of 4-4-2 and I am not putting my paith in Cisse to be scoring goals with his head.

We don’t know how to cross the ball and that is fine by me. I want us to play football differently anyway.

  • 24 ArtyH // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:50 AM

@ valle, I get what you are saying and agree, but all players play for themselves thats why they celebrate when they score, its not for the club for the most of them its for themselves. The point I was trying to make was Ash should have strengthened the side last summer and we would not be facing the drop now. Agree though that Ba wanted away and used us as a spring board, just gutted we could not have got the proper going rate for him, which IMHO would have been three times what we got.

  • 25 sandino // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:03 AM

sign sakho bony lens and lukoki either this or the next window sakho cause colo is leaving in the summer. bony cause we need anothe striker. lens cause he can play on the right with ben arrfa on the left. lukoki cause he is quick young amd talented. all of these players have been linked to nufc in the last 2 years. :-)

  • 26 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:04 AM

*I can see my phone just went crazy :-)

should have read poacher and winger lol

  • 27 Rozzy // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:42 AM

    ***SEYDOU DOUMBIA***

Get this lad in from CSKA Moskva. £8m – £12m

  • 28 dubzy // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:51 AM

    Luis Muriel.or RVW PLZZZZZZZZZZ

  • 29 Crawfordladd17 // Jan 27, 2013 at 11:45 AM

Rozzy only 8-12m really? Thought he would be at least 15m

  • 30 stephen1971 // Jan 27, 2013 at 12:10 PM

give ashley credit for the transfers but do you think he,d be spending the same way if this new epl contract with bt etc did,nt come into play next season ? he,s not silly and he knows the clubs will get a lot more money

  • 31 bomber // Jan 27, 2013 at 12:27 PM

Danny Graham!! A local lad! and would balance the english/french people in the squad!! he scores goals, and wouldnt mind sitting on the bench!

  • 32 cockneymagpie90 // Jan 27, 2013 at 1:04 PM

Although i like the look of Bony i think thats not the type of player we should be getting.

We need someone like PEA. Hes pacey, good dribbler and can finish. He can play up the wing or down the middle and would be great in a top 3 PEA-CISSE-HBA.

I say we up the bid by a couple mil because its deffinately worth it!

I hope ee get him but iv got a feeling the bony deal will go through because of Tiote being good mates with him and both playing in ACON as we speak. Plus bis team are getting used to life without him and could see them cashing in on him.
