Newcastle In For Russian International Striker?

This lad played against us in our last  game against Reading – and there’s some surprise news today that Newcastle are linked with Reading’s 29 year-old Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak.  The news is that the player is wanted by both Rubin Kazan and Newcastle, according to Russian daily Izvestia.

Pavel Pogrebnyak – Newcastle may be interested

But we’d be surprised if Newcastle are really interested in this striker, who played for Fulham last season, simply because he doesn’t fit the usual profile of players Newcastle want to bring into the club these days.

The fee mentioned is €4M, which is just over 3M – so it’s a reasonable fee for the experienced Russian – who has shown he can score goals in the Premier League, and we suppose if Newcastle cannot get one of their top striker targets before the end of the month – Pavel would be a reasonable signing for that kind of money.

Pogrebnyak’s agent Oleg Artemov had this to say about his client:

“At the moment, Pogrebnyak is a Reading player and there are no active negotiations on his future in the current transfer window.”   “The last time that I talked with Pogrebnyak was a long time ago, but judging by the fact that he does not call, I think everything is going smoothly at Reading.”

“On Newcastle, I cannot say, because I have not heard about  their interest. As for a possible return for Pogrebnyak to Russia, I would prefer to not make any comment on this subject.”

After he joined Fulham last January, the Moscow-born striker scored 6 goals in 12 appearances for the Cottagers, and so far at Reading he has 8 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions this season.

He has 33 caps for Russia with 8 goals.

Just realised that he would be more expensive than Sissoko 😛 I already use Cabaye as a standard for comparing transfer fees…

Still fun to see the crazy stuff that comes out of their heads!

If they wanted a believable and sell-able story, at least think of a player that suits our policies..

We should get an attacker that can be used both on the flanks of a 4-3-3 or as the main striker if needed imo… I dont think Bony is that attacker, but beggars cant be choosers i guess.

Pardew calls him a diver before the reading game
The man is pretty much ineffective during the game.

No chance we are in for him.

Does that mean we overpaid for the other 4 we brought in?
Afterall Sissoko was the cheapest acquisition for us this window. 😛

Gouff was cheaper, but details aren’t important 😛

Anyone else reckon we’ll swoop for Douglas in the summer? Can’t really lose with a free agent.

Pardew said: ‘When we come to Reading, this is a battling side we’re playing. They’re great at set plays — but the striker Pogrebnyak, he falls over.

‘He’s one of the worst players I’ve seen for falling over and buying free-kicks, so we have got to be clever.’

Wait, of all the reasons to write him off, you picked “too russian”? WHat’s wrong with russians? Russians are awesome. If I have to kill 10,000 kittens to magically change Alan Dzagoev into a Newcastle player, I’d finish the job in 10 seconds.
