The Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has revealed that he wanted to bring Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha to Newcastle United, but admitted he had no chance against the spending might of Manchester United – who shelled out an amazing £15M for the 20 year-old.
Wilfried Zaha – going to Manchester United
And to think for a couple million more than that £15M figure ,Newcastle have got some great value this month in bringing in 27 year-old Mathieu Debuchy, 23 year-old Mapouu Yanga-Mbiwa, 26 year-old Yoan Gouffran, 20 year-old Massadio Haidara and 23 year-old Moussa Sissoko.
Not bad value for Newcastle in January – which is always notorious for being difficult to bring in good players from other clubs - because it’s halfway through the season.
But Newcastle couldn’t pay out £15M for one 20 year-old, and this is what Alan Pardew said about the Crystal Palace whiz kid:
“There is slightly more value in the French market. Obviously we have exploited that.” “I like Zaha – I wanted to bring him to this club.” “But seriously, we had no chance. We just can’t pay that.”
“We have bought four players for that. It suited our needs better to strengthen several positions for that sort of money.” “I’m now good, I’m angry – and I’m ready to rumble!’’
It’s worth noting in the latest Deloitte financial figures for last season, only six clubs in England made higher revenues than Newcastle United – and they were Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham - so in that sense we are England’s 7th richest club and the 20th richest football club in the world.
But it’s a hiccup this season that we’ll not be in Europe next season, and that will hit the revenues – but of course – given where we are in the league table at the moment – just staying in the Premier League this season will be good enough for us.
