Which Striker Should Newcastle Buy This Week?

5:01 pm, Sunday, January 27th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 430 Comments

Newcastle could be after four different strikers this week – so given the approximate transfer fee of each of the following four strikers – which one would you like to see at Newcastle before the end of this month?

I didn’t put Lionel Messi down – because I thought he’d be a little too expensive.

    BONY 2013

  • 2 Dannyo // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:04 PM

Bony quite clearly, but we won’t be getting a striker. Our work is concluded.

  • 3 Santiago Munez // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:04 PM

wont get Aubameyang for 10 mil and pavel is on the older end. I’d be happy with any of them but prefer Bony or RVW

  • 4 blackerz69 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:04 PM

    Must be Aubameyang!

  • 5 ToonDownSouth // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:04 PM

We should take bets on the starting 11 on Tuesday.

I think we’ll see Shola at fullback.

  • 6 Jayden // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:05 PM

    TDS. Papiss in CDM

  • 7 Rockerfuller // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:06 PM

In all fairness . We should look another midfielder, our wings are weak and uncreative.. I’d like us to look at Coutinho, surely he’d be a good shout or maybe young nathan redmond from the brum?

  • 8 croftus5678 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:06 PM

pea is the better my second would be bony then rvw
but any would be great and i would not rule gouffran pushing any of them out of the squad as he seems to be very very underated.

  • 9 Alan Pas-de-clue // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Hoping to see this 11 on Tuesday Give new signings time to bed in.

    Simpson Taylor willo santon
    Obertan perch cabaye gutti
    Shola cisse

  • 10 proudtobageordie // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:09 PM

We don’t need another striker who will be of to acon every other year
R v w the closest thing to r v p you will ever see he gets my vote

  • 11 Rockerfuller // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Lets sign players and not use them.. silly idea.. Ameobi is past it, and cisse knows not where the goal is!

  • 12 Hugh Jorgan // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:10 PM

    Oldham 3 Liverfool1

  • 13 No Plain Saylor // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:10 PM

You might as well have my grannys name down as Pogrebnyak!! For godsake Pardew insulted him before the reading match, he’s 29, sh1te and on high wages.. There is absolutely no interest from nufc, zero, zilch, nada..

    Our works concluded.
    In your dreams mate

  • 15 ToonDownSouth // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Why would that be in his dreams?

  • 16 keeganjr // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Watched a video of this Bony.. YES THANK U.. What a beast.. Ricky and bony.. And we will challenge top 4 next season

  • 17 noladonna // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:13 PM

none of the above get that big beast smith from oldham lol

  • 18 No Plain Saylor // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:14 PM

PEA is our man, Bony would be imense in place of Cisse.. He would not work with him, in the same way Ba didnt.. I cant see us spending up to 12 million on a striker to be rotated, 12 million on a player that can be in the same eleven as Cisse? For me it has to be a player who creates chances, scores goals, has skill, the crossing, and youth..
Belhanda (agreed to join Fernebache, there is still time to swoop £7.67m fee is a bargain or him)
Thomas Ince (better than Zaha, half the price, Reading just bid 7 mill for him..)
PEA – (Quality up front or left of a front three, bags of skill)

  • 19 countrylad14 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:15 PM

I don’t think we need a big name striker this month (well we do but we wont get one) but we do need more back up in that position. In a way I kinda hope Shola gets a knock in training and is out for a few weeks….that might show them that we can’t rely on him as our only back up. I don’t see why we can’t put in a loan (option to buy) bid in for John Guildetti at Man City. Yes he isn’t proven but neither are any of our “targets” if if works out we can make it permanent in the summer

  • 20 proudtobageordie // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:16 PM

He must of been dreaming if he thinks that. We will bring in a striker as priority befor Thursday night imo

  • 21 Macas // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:16 PM

None, we need a good left winger

  • 22 nick_9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:16 PM

No plain saylor – it’s crazy the press would even come up with such a link after what Pardew said.

Ed – why isn’t heskey in the poll?

Proud – I’m just finding it a little hard to believe we will spend more money this window after already having a net spend only about 12 million. I’m hoping we do bring in another striker though but I’m surprised (pleasantly) we’ve brought in five players this window

  • 23 nick_9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:18 PM

    Net spend of 12 million*

  • 26 proudtobageordie // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:21 PM

You found it hard to believe we were signing anyone after the reading defeat if I remember right lol. Pards interview before Everton start of jan after ba left that day. Our priority this window is to replace him? Do you honestly think gruff ran is his replacement? I don’t . So IMO I think wolfs winkle will arrive next week. Or I’m hoping he will

  • 27 Mr Random // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:22 PM

Danny graham. Boyhood nufc fan. Sunderland looking to buy him.

Really hope pardew goes in for him. Gotta save him from taking the wrong road.

  • 32 GeordieDan // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Either Bony or Aubamayang for me.

Bony is prolific and an absolute beast but Aubamayang is technically quality and very fast.

I’d be very happy with either but I think Aubamayang would fit better into our current team.

  • 33 proudtobageordie // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:27 PM

Well you obviously haven’t been reading my posts correctly. Correct I know nowt they are opinions . Where as you seem to be posting what all journos are saying on twatter

  • 34 nick_9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:28 PM

No plain Saylor – to think someone is being paid for writing such waffle.

Proud – I don’t remember saying such thing, all along I thought one or two and after Debuchy came in I thought we would sign a replacement for Ba and that be it. Before Ba left i wanted a cb and a rb plus replacements for anyone who left. Obviously I’m happy we have gone on to strengthen the back and being in further players. Now as for gouffran I’ve seen some fans big him up and others shoot him down so I’m really not sure what to expect with him. Another striker would top off a great window.

  • 35 Sazzer // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:28 PM

If we have 12 m £ over I would not spend it all on Bony. With deals on Thauvin and Aubameyang falling through I would go for:

8.3 m £ on Aspas relsease clause and bid rest on £ Kioytake.

  • 36 AndyMac // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:29 PM

I agree with Plain Saylor we should be looking to enhance the flanks with attacking mfs like HBA. Belhanda would be ideal to compliment HBA or Boudebouz or even Ince. We need to move away from traditional 4-4-2 once and for all, with 4-3-3 the preferred choice for the club and not just this team.

  • 37 vic2810 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Being very greedy I’d like to see Dries Mertens for LW AND R.V.W.
Replace players in summer who go (Collo looks a dead cert to be off then, I’d take alderweireld), and we’d have a squad looking capable of challenging for trophies. It’s been a while since I was this optimistic as a toon fan.

  • 38 Dannyo // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:30 PM

Take this into consideration when you choose though.
Aubamayang is more of a team player, can operate on the wing as well. Scores a good amount of goals, has bags of pace.
Bony is very much a selfish player, like what Ba was accused of.
Bony has 1 assist in 5 seasons.
If you want an out and out striker who should be playing alone up top or alongside someone who’s a good assister, get Bony.
If you want more of a team player who has more versatility, get Aubamayang.

Again though, i want Bony, he’s got power we could well use up top.

  • 41 proudtobageordie // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:33 PM

Apologies if I got that wrong mate. I haven’t seen much of goofy so can’t really comment but we need another striker. What happens if cisse don’t regain his form. No other options and you don’t win games keeping clean sheets. We need goals

  • 42 SpaceGhost // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:34 PM

The reason PEA or Remy was on Carr’s radar because these are the forwards we need to get the best from Cisse. Both can play wide. Bony or RVW are fine strikers but not what we need at the moment.

My hope is we get PEA in this window or later in the summer. In the mean time bid a loan for Scott Sinclair. Done.

    Douglas ( to replace Colo)
    Lukaku ( to replace Shola)
Julio Cesar ( to replace Harper & give Krul competition)

  • 45 Dannyo // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:39 PM

Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard the same from other so called ITK’s. No one ever reads their posts right when they’re wrong. It’s nothing new mate.
And my posts may be repeats by various journalists and articles, but the difference is, I know who has weight behind their words. Who’s reliable and who’s not.

  • 46 nick_9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:40 PM

Proud – i said all along last month before Ba left that their is no guarantees Cisse will find his form again and there isn’t. Like I said I want another striker so in going to wait patiently and hope we get one, if we don’t then I’m thankful for the other five we signed and lets see how they get on. We have some fast players now who could do well on the counter and I want Pards to get them playing well.

Anyone watching Liverpool? I hope they lose today, it’s nice to see the smaller teams progress when they’re not playing us

  • 47 proudtobageordie // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:40 PM

Is he on loan. Missed what they said due to bairns fighting

  • 48 Mister Tuff // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:41 PM

Ian Toon – I know what you mean about Shearer being on MOTD, bit of a disappointment -but good number 9. As for heroes, well I think my first hero was Supermac -not a fantastic player -but explosive power and speed. I had to endure years of Jim Iley and Kieth Kettleborough before that. So not much to shout about. Jimmy Smith was good -never seen a player nutmeg so many opposition players –he succumbed to the dreaded BBB -birds boose and betting.
A new hero could be Aubamayang -if St Etienne sell him -which might be doubtful. Very confident player. I like his confidence -even wears £2500 crystal encrusted boots.
You mention going to see Lincoln – seems to be getting good reviews -the missus was on about it the other night -so I suppose I’ll have to give her her annual run out to keep the peace.

  • 49 JP...from The Rock // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:42 PM

I am torn between PEA and Bony, at the end I voted for PEA as his pace is what we lack and he could work well with Cisse. Bony is a beast that I would love to have in the team also and he has such composure in the 6 yard box it’s unbelievable. Either would be a brilliant acquisition and I’d be happy either way.

On one hand you have –

    PEA; pros;
immense pace and skill and could work well with Cisse.

    PEA; cons;
looks to be too lightweight for the EPL.

    Bony; pros;
    immense strength, power and finishing.

Bony; cons; Leaves for ACON every now and again, not very fast, might not work well with Cisse as they are similar players and would cost a bit more.

It’s just something about Bony’s skill, strength and composure that my instincts tell me he would be amazing in the EPL and the new Drogba.

    Exciting Times 😀

  • 50 OhSholaAmeobi // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:42 PM

Bony is quite a lazy player, in many respects like darren bent, does barely any work but comes alive around the box. he’s a bit too similar to cisse in his style really, albeit with more power.
Aubameyang is the one we want, quick, skilful, creative…and he scored again today.

See your point but the reason we went after Ba and cisse is because they are both established and proven goalscorers, players like that don’t just suddenly turn poor. They may have dry spells but they both have consistent records throughout their careers.

  • 58 Transfer Sage // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:46 PM

Anyone except bony….we can’t have our two main strikers go the ACON every other year…it’s stupidity.

Get rvw for me…best of them all in my eyes.

  • 59 Dannyo // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:47 PM

Liverpool will be giving Oldham hell here on in. Oldham will have to kick it long and block their shots.
They look absolutely knackered atm. Couple of heavyweights in their team too, literally.

  • 60 Sazzer // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:47 PM

German combo for Max Kruse and Kevin Volland would be nice as well. I think that would cost more though and not sure of our appeal among German players.

I dont want to sign any big unit who plays up front whilst Parsnip is at the club, as it encourages the halfwit to start booting the ball over our midfields heads as soon as we find ourselves a goal down. One of the main reasons why we never come back from going behind.

Pea for me, think he would fit in perfectly to a front 3, and if needed could replace Cisse if he is a bit off colour. However Cisse’s goals will return, starting on tuesday.

    My team for tuesday.

    ………………. ..Krul…………………….

Pardews likely team, replace either Goofy or Marv with Jonas. Probably Marv, good to come off the bench Marv mind you, but personally if he starts we win the game comfortably with this team.

Would like to see us knocking the ball about with a bit more pace and purpose, what a nice looking team though, Jonas might even start to look a bit better, unlikely though.

  • 67 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:51 PM

    I voted RVW
Bony for me is an exact ba replica so really dont see the point in him coming unless cisse is off
I like the look off but this lad is already touting himself between citeh and manure doubt he’d seriously consider us if im honest
We’ve watched this lad for near in 2 years now so if were after him its for good reason and believe he’ll bring some balance to the squad which i dont think the other 2 will they will both want to be the main man

  • 68 Transfer Sage // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:51 PM

I just think the club should learn from last year. We were left without Ba and cisse hadn’t made his debut and we struggled whilst they were away…and they weren’t gone long as they went out in the groups. If they had gotten to the final it would have been much worse

  • 72 nick_9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:54 PM

LGFUAD21 – service has been pretty poor for him but he has missed a few sitters which has probably knocked his confidence. I think he needs to score in a couple of games running to get that feel good factor back. At the minute he seems to be lashing at shots like he is very desperate to score.

  • 73 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 27, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Completly agree with everything you’ve said about cisse
Its not a dig, theres no doubting his talent, but its a reality he might nit find his full form this season

I can’t see it and don’t want to either, it doesn’t play to our strengths I don’t think.

Rather see us use our advantage in midfield with players like tiote, Anita, sissoko, cabaye, marv, Ben arfa… Find a way to get as many of them on the pitch as possible.

The use the pace of gouffran to stretch teams and cisse as the finisher

I think it’s a big change in shape which would be difficult to implement without mistakes mid season.

Man city had a lot of problems swapping between 3/5 at the back and a standard 4.

I’d like to see us got 4231…..solid but plenty to create as well

  • 91 TorqToon // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:12 PM

    RVW all day long!

PEA will cost over the odds due to all the interest in him, bony would be best played as a loan striker so wouldn’t fit with the new dynamics the team are trying to move towards, readings finest – ISN’T readings finest so an easy no to him…

If you are looking at a perfect match for what Newcastle are trying to do, a player to become a fluid part of the team, somebody who compliments Cisse, HBA, Gouffran etc…

It HAS to be RVW – who I STILL feel is a massive possibility to arrive this week!!! 🙂

    debuche Collo Yanga santon
    Perch Anita
    marv cabaye gutti

  • 96 nick_9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:13 PM

Tads that’s exactly it, I’m not being critical of him but more so worrying about the worst case scenario. Any fans wants to see him banging them in.

Given the players we have now we can field a strong midfield with Anita, cabaye, sissoko, gouffran and obertan. Once Ben Arfa and tiote are back that’s when the real competition starts. Heck even obertan might do well as an impact sub if sissoko and gouffran are supporting.

  • 97 jeraziah // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:13 PM

    Alvaro Negredo anyone?

  • 98 nick_9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:16 PM

    Marveaux even not obertan!

I would like to see Pards adopt a defensive two in tiote/Anita and sissoko with an attacking free infront chosen between Arfa, cabaye, marveaux, gouffran and then cisse up top alone. Would love to see a diamond at some point with Benny playing central.

  • 99 WWYCD // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:16 PM

No one is coming in now imo so no point voting these may be summer targets but we will probably end up going for minimal spend on prospects again

But we had a hell of window tbf should be enough to stave off relegation which was the aim I’d imagine

  • 100 AshSays // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:17 PM

Sporting is playing right now and rvw has started the game however the manager ( j. Ferreira) is surprisingly open to the possibility of rvw leaving. He said before the game that rvw “has market” and if they sell him the will get a replacement before the end of he window. This is very surprising as rvw is sporting’s only real striker and they are struggling this season. What this space, I guess…

  • 101 WWYCD // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:18 PM

  • 106 colwell // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:21 PM

We have spent around 18m on players during this window does any one really believe MA will spend 12m on 1 player?

MA has never spent that on 1 player, let alone after just buyin 5 players.

  • 107 TorqToon // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Yo – Many people said that when I first mentioned Sissoko, mate! 🙂

I can just see MA keeping half an eye on things, and if the player becomes available at the right price – I think we will be in.

But if nobody else comes in or out this window surely there can’t be ANYBODY with any complaints! It’s been fantastic!

  • 108 Mister Tuff // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:23 PM

Geordiefromthemidlands – I’ve heard nothing regards Newcastle united in France even since we announced Sissoko so I’m led to believe our business over there is done.

However kinda feel we are keeping irons in the fire elsewhere in Europe.

  • 110 Spreadthetoon // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:23 PM

RVW would be my choice, but i’d rather Siem de Jong who’d be my first preference along with Florian Thauvin playing out on the flanks. Still feel Siem is not done n dusted. Just a feeling. So either RVW n SDJ .

WWYCD is right, there’ll be no more. We’ll do well with what we have, and I’m not worried about the additional striker. We’ve added goals with a couple of the incomings and if Cisse comes on form we’ll be sorted.
In any case, there’ll be no struggle now in terms of goals imo.

  • 113 Mercenary // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:26 PM

With Debuchy and Santon giving the width (their natural game)

  • 120 geordiefromthemidlands // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:35 PM

So potentially if we are keeping an eye on the market, logically our recent buys have been from france or holland and one from bundesliga. So if france is done. Then de jong looks feasible. Would we break the current pattern and dip into the Portuguese league for rvw.

If it is those two rvw or siem de jong ? Preference?

  • 121 alf // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:35 PM

Pardew and Brendan Rogers, Both out of their depth! Which one will go first?

  • 122 WWYCD // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:38 PM

True mate true but the link to Sissoko never went away all the ones to our striker targets seem to be like grasping water. Reckon Remy was our priority and when he cut out none of the others are realistically attainable atm but u never know

Agreed mate I reckon we will have enough goals in our side for the season and maybe Gouffran will shock us all (if hes willing to run himself into the ground imo)

  • 123 JackButler // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:40 PM

Any striker coming in now would just be a massive bonus considering whats already happened. The players we have already brought in have surpassed everyone’s expectation’s so lets not be greedy lads 😉

  • 124 Robby Bobson // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:41 PM

Before now our first xi picked itself but now i say we have a pool of 15 players that wont see themselves on the bench supplimented by perchy obertan ameobi etc

So the talk of a striker coming in for 10mill is just paper talk. Only thing maybe is a replacement for ranger for a few mill.

  • 125 kilcline // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:42 PM

Would anyone just be happy with getting Ince in rather than a striker?

    Jack butler?

  • 126 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:45 PM

Well RVW is a CF and De jong (siem) is more of an attacking CM who can play a SS so both would bring a different quality to the team but if were talking about the signing we’d most like to see regardless of position the de jong, but we’d have so many midfielders we could do a spain!!!

Just for fun lads people seem intent on lukaku who i think realistically would cost £20-25 mil, soooo if we were to spend that what forward would people most like too see? (this is purely theoretical like!)
For me it would be marco reus!

  • 127 JackButler // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:45 PM

Ince would be a brilliant signing imo and I’d love to see us get the kid in, also like Matty Philips at Blackpool as well I don’t have a single issue with all these French lads coming in as they are all of the highest quality, but I would like to see a few younger English lads come in as well

  • 128 Robby Bobson // Jan 27, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Anything extra now is a bonus so id take ince.

  • 140 toonfan91 // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:04 PM

We need someone in the same mould as a young Craig Bellamy someone who has fire in their belly, run their socks off and be a real nuisance to opposition defenders.

Dont think we will spend 12 mil on bony and rotate him with cisse plus after seeing clips of him it could be a similar partnership to cisse and ba.

Dries Mertens would be a cracking signing tho 🙂

All the strikers that have been mentioned lately could all do a job for us, i keep wandering if gouffran would have came in if remy had as well, i would like to think he would have.

At the toon that central striker situation has always been the biggest story its what the toons famous for, would love to see one of the big hitters coming in, i dont feel it 100 percent and if not gouffran with an impressive one in two for games played over the last two seasons might just surprise us all and help pull us through to safety.

  • 143 JackButler // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Normally I’d say I hate Liverpool more, but now that Redknapp is at QPR I Hate them with a passion. te guy is the media darling and portrayed as the Crafty Cockney, I see him has a slimey, corrupt spiv and hope he’s takes them (and Remy) down

  • 144 geordiefromthemidlands // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Prob still bin dippers then spurs then QPR
Never used to mind QPR tbh decent fans grass roots kinda club with a good history, but then you get a t1t like fernandez and that other mob signing a new starting 11 every window, they didnt even give the lads who won them promotion a chance, sack manager after manger, tbh they deserve to go back down

  • 146 kilcline // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:09 PM

Yeah i agree JB, Redknappy of baggy face kant as i commonly call him has never once scouted his own players! Just tries to sabotage everyone else’s deals. He goes mad if clubs go after his players too.

How many of you think that Pardew will be here come the start of next season???

I know Ashley’s gained a few new friends over the past week, but he’s still a businessman who’s going to want a return on his investment.

I think that no matter what happens between now and May, Pardew will be gone in the summer

  • 149 89Norcal // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:13 PM

Before Ashley got more hands on, I would have said Pards is staying as long as we stay up.

  • 152 kilcline // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:15 PM

I think Pardrew will be here, he needs to go back to the basics we did well last season, he needs to be strong enough to leave good players out if they don’t fit our best formation (4-3-3 imo).

  • 158 Toon-Barmy // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:26 PM

I’ve just been trying to work out the value of our current squad, (most of which are Mike Ashley signings) and by my reckoning we have spent in the region £83.4 Million on our current players. A new striker is going to push that over £90m, I wonder where that figure ranks among other premier league clubs’ spending?

  • 159 JackButler // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:27 PM

For me I think there would be managers climbing over each other to get the managers job here. We now have a very, very good squad, that whit the right man in charge could push for a top four spot next season. i know that we have had to deal with a massive injury list this season but it has only gone to highlight Pardews naivety with selections and formations

I would take Guidetti on loan then summe
Buy Douglas on free, get Martens and PEA for £18m
Sell Williamson get £1m, Rangers 50p and Jonas for £4m. If colo wants to leave we could get around £7m then replace with Ajax Alderweireld for £6m or so. If we get a good bid for Tiote of £15m+ then sell and do not need a replacement with Sissoko Anita and Bigi but buy an attacking midfielder fom Montpieller like Belhanda who we can get for £8m or his team mate Cabella for £5m and maybe Austin from Burnley. Basically two good players per position apart from cm and full backs more than 2 good per position

  • 163 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:34 PM

Agree that there would be managers from all over the continent who would love to take the job just to showcase themselves in the PL

  • 165 JP...from The Rock // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:35 PM

If all our top striker targets are settled for now (PEA) then we’ll have to wait till the summer as not to waste money on a substandard replacement. BUT if were to bring in an attacking midfielder that could also play on the LW/LF role then it could work out even better for us. Imagine we get say Mertens, or Marvin Martin or Siem De Jong, the pace and creativity within our team would be immense that I bet it would make Shola look World Class as he’ll be banging them in for fun-hopefully it will be Cisse instead of Strolla but you get my point.

We would have invention, flair and pace and that is something we have seriously lacked this season.

  • 166 Bowzer912 // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:35 PM

I think there is nowt wrong with having 2 class strikers in the team because Cisse has played for nearly the whole half season and is knacked and out of form so having Bony would possibly work.

However contradicting myself I would much rather have Siem de Jong or Wolfman who compliments Cisse by supporting him upfront and helping Benny in his no10 role

  • 171 yo-yo // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:39 PM

It hasn’t just been the injury list, but poor form from key players, Cisse, Tiote- even Colo, an abysmal level of motivation from a lot of the second string, lack of match fitness from Cabs and Marv early in the season and a massive lack of depth in the squad.

Pards has been forced to juggle and this is a high risk business and he has made mistakes. Anyone in the same position trying to find answers to our problems from week to week would also have made mistakes. Sometimes he over- thinks and his own lack of confidence made us overcautious but these are understandable errors.

If AP can’t get us well up towards 10-12th p[lace with these guys then fine I’d agree we need a change,
now Batman has shown his level of commitment there’s nowhere to hide.

I also agree that MA has assembled a team that could pull in any ambitious manager. This is the first time I’ve been convinced of MAs ambition – and Bills-son is owed an apology by some of us.

Sunderland do have a bit of a history of signing sign Toon fans don’t they, although one of the greatest ever north east born players, Len Shackleton played for both clubs, mostly for Sunderland and was I think a Sunderland fan although perhaps not an overly parochial one. He was a truly great player by all accounts, so it’s more understandable we wanted him, but big Toon fans like Lee Clarke, Danny Graham, Chopra, why do Sunderland go in for these types of players who really aren’t that great. Are the Sunderland board simply above the bigotries of local rivalry or is it a case of beggars can’t be choosers.

Got a feeling that we could seriously regret not signing another FWD if it is the case.

I think with another striker we’d easily pull clear of the relegation places but without strengthening that weak left side we might struggle to score many.

I don’t want to be negative as the club has done amazing but they always seem to stop short of doing enough.

I don’t think we’ll go down but there might be a few weeks of will we/won’t we.

That could still be rectified by Friday morning.

  • 179 TorqToon // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Evening Tads – I think Ben Yedder – to ANY club other than Newcastle would command a fee of around €8mil but to us, (following Sissoko & even though we weren’t at fault through any of it!), they would look more for €10mil.

A very good player who isn’t being treated properly, rushed back from knocks and injuries too soon, which is affecting his form at the club. Saying that, €10mil (£8.7mil) is still a good amount for a very technically gifted player.

Also – Dont bother responding to certain posters mate! It’s a school night and tomorrow we can all have a ‘grown up’ discussion rather than the playground stuff he is trawling out tonight! 🙂

Tads:yeah but maybe leave a few red hearings for sloppy chops to pick up from there

  • 183 yo-yo // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:52 PM

Yeh – I get the same ‘is that all ? ‘ type thought after every window. This has been stellar but we still have the striker/winger problem. If Gouffy stands out then great but I reckon he is no3 striker. Got to be better than relying on Strolla mind. But.. we have stuck to our transfer policy and it has come real good for us.
I sstill think RVW is a might be as we have been in for him before and he will be £5m more expensive after a year or two in the Prem

  • 184 Mister Tuff // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:52 PM

tads -if they had not gone back in for Debuchy I would have been annoyed especially after all his public statements -he would have looked a right idiot (also Cabaye would probably not have been happy).
Since the summer I thought they would be getting three, then I thought “half a team”. Quite impressed with the standard of the new recruits. Good players will know what to do by instinct.
I still think El Gordo may still surprise us yet with another player (possibly two) of high quality/value. I still think he does not care a lot about Newcastle but more about his investment -if we progress on the back of his financial plans that will be just fineby me.

  • 185 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Lol yeah should of just ignored the poor little fella 😉
Defo think your right, toulouse have a real hang up over the sissoko transfer but atleast they got something for him, thats football sadly!
Yedder would be a cracking signing but hope we can bring in RVW!

Your right our left side is now the stand out weak spot in the team, can gouffran play on the left?
Like the idea of your man mertens bombing down the wing

  • 187 Dantoon85 // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:57 PM

Totally agree this has definately been our best window under fat cash. Sell Simmo this window so we can make a small fee from it rather than naff all in summer

  • 188 Mancgeordie // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:59 PM

Just got a sneaky feeling that we will get pea this week no insight or itk might be wrong just a feeling, but gouffran, pea and hba on the left would be devastating

  • 189 Phoenix // Jan 27, 2013 at 7:59 PM

@170 George Reilly and tony Cunningham now that was a partnership

  • 190 Beattie25 // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Gouffran would be a bit like Ba ion the left for me.

Just there for balance, not really a goal threat or creative influence IMO.

Jonas is gone, Marv is better in the middle (might be able to do a job there) and Obertan is…well…Obertan.

If Gabriel could transfer that pace into something we’d be fine.

I think Goofy will be our back up striker but I just have this awful feeling that we’ll stick with 4-4-2.

Thats what a LW signifies for me, the death of those tactics.

  • 191 BigKirky // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:01 PM

It’s been a really great window this January. Another LW forward would be absolutely perfect. Can’t wait for the Villa game.

  • 192 TorqToon // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Gouffran is more than capable of playing wide left TADS.

He is going to surprise many people with his displays this season!

    Hopefully in a good way…! 🙂

  • 193 Mister Tuff // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:03 PM

remy D – Mister Tuff to you scumbag. You mentioned earlier that a lady was sitting on your face. I feel it necessary to point out some potential dangers to you. You need to ensure that she does not evacuate her bowels ( you probably will understand this as “having a sh!te”) onto your face as there would then be two turds underneath her. Also some of the excrement (you will know this as “sh!te”) may get into your mouth – resulting in even more sh!te eventually coming out of it.

  • 194 Beattie25 // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:05 PM

    I’ll trust your judgement.

Do you think we’ll be fine without another player?

PEA in this week please Mr Ashley and I promise Ill to sports direct and buy a French home shirt

  • 196 yo-yo // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:06 PM

Gouffy ought to be an 8-12 goals a season guy.
4-4-2 looks a lot better with the Mapou and Moussa.
Just hope we don’t see much of Strolla

  • 197 Sazzer // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:06 PM

I don’t see why we would stop trying to get anyone unless we got some secret deal that will have to wait until the summer.

We have made bid on Thauvin and Aubameyang after we bought 5 players.

  • 198 jimmysmith // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:06 PM

Great signings, but isn’t Debuchey the only guaranteed starter for now.

I feel a fit Steven Taylor would get the nod over Mbiwa at Villa, while Anita. Tiote and Cabs would be our established first choice midfield 3 once Cheik returns.

Gouffran might get a start in HBA’s absence but probably not after. Haidarra looks a real quality fullback but you’d think is 3rd choice.

Sissoko and Mbiwa will you’d imagine force their way in to the stating 11 but probably won’t walk in.

It’s the competition for first team places that is the great benefit to the side, more so than the individuals, as we already have an excellent first choice 11, however now we the squad to genuinely hope to rival the likes of Spurs, Liverpool and even Arsenal.

  • 199 Mister Tuff // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:12 PM

It was bandied about a couple of weeks ago, I think by Percy Panais himself that things may pick up right at the end of the window ie clubs waiting to see if better offers come in – so still hopeful of a further surprise(s).

  • 200 TorqToon // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:13 PM

Beattie – In my opinion – yes we will be fine!

Personally I would still like to see RVW brought in, or PEA who is less likely to move this window.

  • 201 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:14 PM

We just need one striker in, and then we’re capable of beating anyone in the league.

  • 202 TurkishFan101 // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:14 PM

Bonjour lads, ACON is going to be moved onto the summer from now on so us looking at Wilfried Bony or any other potentially good young African strikers/wingers should be no shock to us. I really think we will sign that french lad Florian Thauvin, a striker like Ben Yedder would be perfect. GK we still looking at Jack Butland no I expect the window not to be over till its officially closed or an official club statement comes through like last window.

Its very hard to second guess pardew’s team selection but taylor is only coming back from injury, mbwia is at full fitness and going in against villa is beter than chelsea

Gouffran may well get a game but i fancy marv and guti ahead of him with cisse spearheading the attack

Well I just lost Some text having to write this out again AGHHHH

Right ! If I was The Gaffa I would go for the one player that would keep the club in the prem … Guaranteed… Short term even, Alvardo. Negredo..

Saying that .., .that would be my tac if I could not get RVW in ..Cause he is the man…, long term.

Whitley Bay is not the answer ..Pea might be but , but ! his Demeanor/temperment might be Big-market ..Boots are gold and diamond encrusted £2500 a pair….Fancy’s himself when he looks in the Mirror methinks.

Pea would be off to Man City first sniff he got . We don’t need any more instability.

RVW for that bit of class and intelligence please.

Alvardo Negredo… How Mucho would he cost?

  • 212 geordiejamie89 // Jan 27, 2013 at 8:49 PM

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang easy choice. He is actually one of the fastest strikers in the world, would definately be on of the fastest in the league. This is what Newcastle fans have been begging for for years. We’re better off having different options, not more than one of the same. The fact that City and Manure are both after him says something.

  • 220 richieboy12 // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:01 PM

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be the best choice , he is a confident , fearless striker and scores for fun , Cisse would thrive off Pierre’s pace. Bony would be my second choice because he is a power house in the box and defenders would bounce off him giving him space to shoot . Plus he would also bring other players into play.

  • 221 JP...from The Rock // Jan 27, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Our new player gave to come in to the team we are on the edge, no mucking about Pardew,no ego, you have been given the bullets, use them and no excuses ie fitness issues for our new players cos it aint washing with me. Just been watching that Sissoko compilation video. What a player. First thoughts that come to mind are a powerhouse driving forward all the time. Always continues his run forward anticipating a return pass. His surging runs are immense -his positivity going forward should encourage the team, as a unit, to do likewise. I think we are in for a treat.

The players we have bought say to me that we will be playing a 4-4-3 formation so we need at least one more striker incase Cisse gets injured , Shola has proved in recent weeks he is not up to it on his own. Two upfront would ruin the Midfield force we now have, Gouffran could be the answer cutting in from the left.

I prefer going for new players, hungrier players eager to make an impression but in our dire circumstances he must have some experience playing the English way. Tom Ince would be a good signing I feel. He ticks all the boxes and won’t be too expensive and is young and English and would want to make an impression coming from the Fizzy League and into the EPL.

One of the verses talks of sing about //ripping your mothers tits off !

Let’s go children of the fatherland,
The day of glory has arrived!
    Against us tyranny’s
    Bloody flag is raised! (repeat)
In the countryside, do you hear
The roaring of these fierce soldiers?
They come right to our arms
To slit the throats of our sons, our friends!

    Grab your weapons, citizens!
    Form your batallions!
Let us march! Let us march!
    May impure blood
    Water our fields!

    La Marseillaise en français

    Listen to la Marseillaise

    Vive la France !

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

This horde of slaves, traitors, plotting kings,
    What do they want?
    For whom these vile shackles,
    These long-prepared irons? (repeat)
Frenchmen, for us, oh! what an insult!
    What emotions that must excite!
It is us that they dare to consider
    Returning to ancient slavery!

    What! These foreign troops
Would make laws in our home!
    What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would bring down our proud warriors! (repeat)
    Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brows would bend beneath the yoke!
    Vile despots would become
    The masters of our fate!

    Tremble, tyrants! and you, traitors,
    The disgrace of all groups,
    Tremble! Your parricidal plans
Will finally pay the price! (repeat)
Everyone is a soldier to fight you,
If they fall, our young heros,
    France will make more,
    Ready to battle you!

    Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors,
Bear or hold back your blows!
    Spare these sad victims,
    Regretfully arming against us. (repeat)
    But not these bloodthirsty despots,
But not these accomplices of Bouillé,
All of these animals who, without pity,
Tear their mother’s breast to pieces!

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    Sacred love of France,
    Lead, support our avenging arms!
    Liberty, beloved Liberty,
    Fight with your defenders! (repeat)
    Under our flags, let victory
    Hasten to your manly tones!
    May your dying enemies
See your triumph and our glory!

    We will enter the pit
    When our elders are no longer there;
There, we will find their dust
And the traces of their virtues. (repeat)
Much less eager to outlive them
    Than to share their casket,
We will have the sublime pride
Of avenging them or following them!

Talk of £9million for Ince is a it pricey TBF he looks a decent prospect but a couple of season s in the fizzy donk make a player who left for nothing suddenly worth that kind of Money … I know he is English but look at the players we have bought and the prices paid makes shopping in France a no brainer ! Having said that I would take Ince but for no more than £7m

I will be honest I am not expecting a great deal from Gouffran (not seen too much of him tbh) but I hope am shocked by his impact

I do have a minor worry that he’s not a Carr scouted player though

Looks to have something about him I must admit but am not going to youtube any of our signings greatest hits

  • 279 Beattie25 // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:03 PM

Reckon we could get Sulamenjani for about £2-3 million.

Contract over soon. Everything we’re looking for.

Whilst we’re getting all philosophical a poem for Tuesday from a great…

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,–
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Agree – two seasons good form in fizzy does not equal three or four years in Ligue 1 or even Erevidisie.

Gouffy will def be Carr scouted on many occasions or we would not take him

  • 283 JP...from The Rock // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Tbh I don’t care where they come from, actually I’ve been wanting us to get rid of some British players as they were simply not good enough. Foreign players usually have more technique and all that and I am all for it. We need it as our passing is nothing short of atrocious most of the time. I just feel we might need more quality Brits ‘homegrown’ because of that rule and get rid of the likes of Simpson etc and in the situation we’re in that we are depending a lot on untested players as great as they might be.

I am just panicking the more I think about it because if we bring in a quality player like PEA or Bony or SDJ we’re going to destroy clubs 🙂 What we all agree in is that we need just one more versatile forward player to calm the nerves.

  • 284 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:09 PM

  • 285 WWYCD // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:10 PM

Hopefully but he may of impressed when we played them and Pards could of pushed for him…not saying that’s what happened but I am scared of the Obertan signing again

Am probably just being nervous because I’ve not seen much of him and that no one else was after him considering his price tag. He says all the right things though which is a bonus

  • 286 jasper // Jan 27, 2013 at 10:11 PM

I think that our remaining list of straight first teasers (asopposed to prospects)are a dominant CB and a strong forward. But MA is not going to pay silly money and this may be left to wait until summer.

The second thing to remember is that the management have decided – correctly – that character is essential. For that reason the likes of N’zogbia is a non-starter and I have my doubts about Douglas, PEA (those boots) and Boney. RVW may pass muster.

Lastlt it also seems likely that most targets have been under observation for a year or more and are preferred to be in the last year of contract, which narrows the field further.

I would like to see these last two pieces of the jigsaw now but I suspect we won’t see them until the summer.

The King sits in Newcastle town, drinking of the blood-red wine
“Where can I get a steely skipper to sail this might boat of mine?”

Then up there spoke a bonny boy, sitting at the King’s right knee
“Hatem Ben Arfa is the very best seaman that ever sailed upon the sea”

The King has written a broad letter and sealed it up with his own right hand
Sending word unto Hatem to come to him at his command

“An enemy then this must be who told the lie concerning me
For I was never a very good seaman, nor ever do intend to be” I’m A Footballer for Newcastle United, Ye’gad’s”!

“Last night I saw the new moon clear with the new moon in her hair
And that is a sign since we were born that means there’ll be a deadly storm”

They had not sailed upon the deep a day, a day but barely free
When loud and boisterous blew the winds and loud and noisy blew the Geordie Crowd
When up there came a Mermaiden, a comb and glass all in her hand, She asked a Sailor “is this Geordie land ”
“Here’s to you my merry young men for you’ll not see dry land again”

“Long may my lady stand with a lantern in her hand
Before she sees my bonny Strip come sailing homeward to Geordie Land” .

Forty miles off Tynemouth, the waters fifty fathoms deep
There Stand’s good Sir Hatem Ben Arfa with Pardew at his feet .

Its all about tactical options and a gut feeling.

I get it, you dont like him – fine thats your opinion. Don’t go shouting people down just because they have a differing opinion. Yes I agree a pacy fwd we may already have one – Gouffran untried but we might get surprised.

I’m amongst those who think IF he came back he’d be able to do a job for the team. England at the Euros played better with him and wellbeck they got shafted for the golden boy – lazy thuglike rooney. But like I said its only opinion.

  • 353 TurkishFan101 // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:02 AM

Guys Sulejmani is in his last year of contract expires on June 30th of this year. His price in this window would be maximum £4 million and we could even get him cheaper. Benfica are after him and Besiktas were nearly close to agreeing a deal but he didn’t want to go to the Turkish league. We have a chance of getting this quality player he is mainly a LW but can play just behind the striker or RW.

  • 354 gonufc (up and Hatem) // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:03 AM

Hullmag- seriously? You’re defending AC but calling Rooney “lazy [and] thuglike”?

I like Carroll despite how he left but still don’t want him back.

We’re moving on. We came up with him playing brilliantly but also playing standard 4-4-2 pinging in balls from either side.

With the players we have now that would be ludicrous. Ben Arfa…. I want the ball to go to his feet as much as possible and him to run at people, if we got Carroll back we would- especially with Pardew’s seeming predisposition to it- hoof it long in 4-4-2.

  • 355 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:07 AM

Its not about not liking him, its about not liking him as a footballer
What tactics does he offer other than hoof?
He cant play a passing game, liverpool have proved that, he cant play hoof anymore west ham have proved that as for england he barely got used at the euros and when he came on it reverted to panic and hoof and it was a dusgrace to watch
The bloke is more injury probe than shola and cant hold the ball up even half aswell
There is no way liverpool will let him go for under £12 mil he’d ve on £30k odd and thats is shocking for a CF of his limited ability there are literally hundreds of CF’s who we could get for that
Just because he’s a geordie doesnt mean he has the right to play for the toon

  • 356 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:12 AM

I maintain my stance that we could put a lampost up just inside the 18 yard box and it would bring more to the team than andy carroll
After the success of this window the thought of bringing in a player of his calibre sends shivers down my spine, were clearly equipping ourselfs for a slicker european style so cant see what job AC would do

  • 358 nick_9 // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:23 AM

Tads – in all honesty I’ve lost faith in the English market not just Andy Carroll. It’s like Pardew has said recently how can we justify spending 15m on Zaha when that amount is a couple of million short of what we paid for five players. I would see anything over 5 million as a waste of money given what we had paid for our other international players. I would rather sign Charlie Austin, hooper or even graham instead of a local lad who was massively overhyped.

  • 359 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:28 AM

    Spot on
Its highlighted when you look at the national team, look at our CF’s!
Defoe n rooney are good players but
    All massivley overrated

Reckon pardew def has until summer but it will be intresting to see if ashley reasses in the summer about management rijkaard woukd be a cracking shout mate

  • 360 Mister Tuff // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:29 AM

Ref Andy Carroll. I reckon he’ll be back in the summer. All the shenanigans about his transfer, Percy Panais making public statements saying he would like him back, the loan deal which Percy said was being dealt with by El Gordo -all seems to me to indicate he is going to be back – and we will have to pay nearly half of the 35 million back to Liverpool.
(my guess -note guess is that we ripped them off and we are being “forced” to take him back -only time will tell).

  • 361 nick_9 // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Mister Tuff – Pardew has me worried because i do think he likes Carroll and I’d hate to see us spend 10 million or so on him because let’s face if prior to this window we rarely have much of a net spend. Anyhow I’ve for high hopes for Campbell, if he is to go out on loan does anyone have a preference where he goes?

  • 362 TurkishFan101 // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:43 AM

Few others free in the summer:

Douglas-Center Back talked about before but came up with attitude problems, was close to acquiring him last summer deal fell through because he wanted to stay longer in order to get Holland citizenship and play for national team. Could sign him on a pre-contract deal but looks like a summer deal for us if it is likely to happen.

Miralem Sulejmani- LW/RW/CF Talked about it in previous post, contract up on June 30th 2012. Could get him in for under £4 million or decide to sign him up for a pre-contract otherwise wait till summer as he will be a free agent.

Daley Blind- CB Plays for Ajax don’t know much about him, he is only 22 and his contract is also up in the summer. Maybe worth a punt but aint seen much in him but surely must be better backup rather then having Williamson?

Kelvin Leerdam – Centre Defensive Midfield Feyenoord player only 22. Most likely not happening but posting it here either way since his a free agent in summer.

Now these are the quality players which I think would help us and push our quality towards a top 4 team. Some have been linked with us already and others have not.

Siem de Jong – CAM A quality player, plays just off the striker, every time I have watched him he has the ability to be huge in the future. £9-11.5m could get him here but he is captain but still possibility of him coming here.

Viktor Fischer- LW A very young player developed from Ajax finest youth system. A left winger which is fast has eye on goal and very good dribbling with excellent ball control. One for the future but at the moment seems like his scoring ratio for a winger is very good.
    AP GL
    – Denmark 1 0
    – Denmark U21 1 0
    – Dänemark U19 6 3
    – Dänemark U17 30 20
    – Dänemark U16 10 4

    Eredivisie 11 5 3 Assists

Adam Maher – CM/CAM Linked with this player before excellent player, just like Belhanda but has the potential to be much better. Currently aged only 19 one for the future.

Jeremain Lens- LW/RW/CF Currently linked with him still think we may sign him. Brilliant player with great ability age is 25 but the cost for him would be around £6-7.6million which I think for his aged we could get a younger winger which I feel why the board and Mike Ashley will not purchase.

Georginio Wijnaldum – RW/LW/CAM An excellent prospect aged only 22 and has allot more to offer. Currently doing very well in league with 9 goals 5 assists out of the 20 appearances. Currently being valued around at only £6.5 million. We could potentially get him for £7 million. Would be great business.

Dries Mertens – LW but prefers ST This guy is a beast and would be a steal although he is aged at 25 which is fairly young with 17 appearances as a left winger he has scored 8 and assisted 11 which is great stats. I have watched this player play many games and think he would be brilliant for us. A bid of £9.5-11 million could lure him to SJP and would be a steal.

Scouting report over, thanks for reading guys hope Mike Ashley reads this blog or even Alan Pardew.

Just heard ( RTP – Portuguese news) that RVW played his last game for Sporting…anyone know anything???

  • 365 Mister Tuff // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:53 AM

Nick -there are loads of transfers which do not work out and the player ends up back at his original club. However, the AC story has me concerned. It was not long after he left that Percy was saying he would like him back – really struck me as strange. I have no doubt the owl head was involved with some “sharp practices” during the sale and later in his recorded drunk rant said Carroll was worth “F**K ALL”.
So I think the Toon have been “persuaded” to take him back – if so it will be in the summer -or never.
Ginger needs to go out somewhere where he is going to improve -wherever that might be – he may be the next Rooney. I still wished he had started some EL games.

  • 366 gonufc (up and Hatem) // Jan 28, 2013 at 12:57 AM

Mister Tuff – what do you mean “”persuaded”? I don’t understand why we’d pay more simply because they paid excessively.

  • 367 Mister Tuff // Jan 28, 2013 at 1:16 AM

gonufc -I just wonder if we do not take him back there may be some civil action in the courts -just an idea -as I cannot reconcile the fact that he had just been sold and then we want him back again. I just find all this so strange and can only come to the conclusion that there is more to this story than meets the eye. but who knows -time will tell.

  • 373 lgnufc // Jan 28, 2013 at 3:58 AM

I think the reason some people are keen to have Andy back is simply because he’s a Geordie, and that they are turning a blind eye to the type of football he forces the team to play. I’d much prefer to direct our hopes and support to Adam Cambell, as the local Geordie striker of the future. In the meantime Ashley, keep the under-valued foreign class coming to Tyneside!

  • 374 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2013 at 4:19 AM

I can’t see no harm having AC back if it’s with the right price and wage. He can give options to AP, sometimes we do need someone good header and can hold up the ball up front, sometimes. I wouldn’t worry about with AC and hoofball if the other 10 players on the pitch doesn’t play hoofball style, but having someone good in te air is also quite handy.

  • 375 gonufc (up and Hatem) // Jan 28, 2013 at 4:48 AM

@Mister Tuff – Liverpool sue Newcastle for misrepresentation? Surely that could not be at all possible! I certainly don’t think there was any unfair pressure put on them to pay- look at the other deals: Henderson- ~17m, Downing 20m and even now Allen 15m, Borini 15m (!) etc. They were just desperate and the new boys in charge thought they could literally buy their way up the table but found out it’s simply not that easy.

Just laughably poor running of a football club.

They made the bid, I really can’t understand why you think we should say “ok, fair cop, we’ll give you half back….”.

Carroll’s injuries are now getting very frequent and whether that be luck or how he lives we don’t know but either way I don’t want us to get him, and if we do not for any more than 4m and 30k a week.

  • 376 YankToonFan // Jan 28, 2013 at 4:55 AM

What I love about this group of players that we’ve purchased is that each should be playing at a top level in five years. These buys most certainly were NOT panic buys, but rather genius moves to acquire some top-shelf quality at excellent prices.

NUFC is now building a strong foundation for a club that could challenge for the Champions League.

Santon, Haidara, Mbiwa, Anita, Sissoko, and Bigirimana are all 23 and under.

Cabaye, Debuchy, HBA, Marveaux, Gouffran, Tiote, STaylor are all 27 or under.

Even the strikers and goal scorers we have been looking at (de Jong, PEA, RVW, Bony) are young, coming into their prime rather than leaving it.

Ashley, Pardew, and Co. are clearly building a club for the long haul. Now, there are still steps that have to be made to get the club into Europe on a consistent basis, but this is the way to do it. Since NUFC cannot (yet) compete with the big clubs, it is best to find bargains that will fill the club with young talent that plays in the PL.

And to be frank, most of the club’s recruits have been spot on – Cabaye, HBA, Marveaux, Cisse, Tiote, Anita, and even Debuchy is showing his class.

There are opportunities in the summer to continue adding quality players at a low cost – Douglas will likely be available on a free, and Sulejmani would provide quality depth. Looking at Nate Redmond and Butland from Birmingham City at cut prices would provide excellent investments for the future.

Finally, I would love to see the club build a youth academy that rivals Ajax’s, or even Crewe or Southampton. For clubs that cannot compete with ManU, City, Barca, Real Madrid and other big clubs, investing from within is simply good business. It will be cheaper than simply buying the best players, and there is good sell-on value to any top-quality player the academy produces.

Ashley seems to have finally understood the need to stay ambitious and invest in the club in order to stay up and make money, hopefully he is swayed that going to Europe on a regular basis is the way to really drive up the value of the club.

  • 377 HKTP // Jan 28, 2013 at 5:10 AM

Watched Bony in a few games and he looks decent. He looks composed, direct and is fairly well built. My only concern is that he gets an awful lot of time on the ball in the dutch league, but he wont be awarded anything near that in the premiership. I’m not convinced he has the necessary attributes for our league. I think we should stick with Gouffran, his record isnt the best but he played on the wings in most of those and with ‘better’ players around him, he could thrive.

  • 378 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2013 at 5:24 AM

Looking at our strongest 11, none of them are english player, but looking at our own english players none of them are good enough probably only Saylor is good enough to be in first 11.
Buying english players are overpriced and very expensive, this is good strategy to bring foreign players in while getting our young english players ready. Once they are ready they can be good addition to the team and when they turn out to be good players, they can be our main income since they valued much higher than foreign players.

  • 383 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2013 at 7:40 AM

The problem with AC is i doubt we’ll get the “right price” WHU were being quoted £17 mil for him and if you look at his value at what he is, a CF, then his stats and injury record realistically put him in the £5-8 million bracket
Also have to disagree about his hold up play, he gies down easy for a big lad!
Would much rather see a gudietti/RVW/de jong bought in who suit tye team around them and have campbell on loan then see where he’s at after the season than spend silly money on AC

  • 384 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2013 at 7:45 AM

So if he goes, that will be funny situation at QPR

  • 385 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2013 at 7:56 AM

I don’t think liverpool will ask that high for AC. They will be trying to sell him as quick as possible. If the asking price is 5million, I can’t see no harm taking him back and I think he is trying to find a way back to NUFC. That will be 30million profit and he will change his playing style to suit the team plays, and it will be much better to have him when the wingers cross the ball into the box.
I don’t remember Houghton playing hoofball, AC didn’t play under AP and we scored a lot of goals during AC and Houghton time.

  • 386 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:00 AM

Mr Tuff@368 — ” Let the buyer beware”. That would be the NUFC defence. You speak of Mrs Tuff as you would your vintage car. That aside I highly recommend Lincoln. Your look at toon heroes my father told me of a 1960 hero Len White . In one of the first games he saw as a kid, at Spurs , he broke his ankle towards the end of the game but stayed on the toon goal line to defend set pieces. The toon won but were subsequently relegated.

Any truth in the rumour about RvW having played his last game for Sporting?

  • 393 Wayayman // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:15 AM

Please god, no more AC talk! We can’t buy him after the players that we’ve attracted so far.

IMO, Cisse hasn’t lost form (he couldve had 3 in the first half V Reading but for the keeper having a blinder) but he’s been playing out of position all season except that game.
Also, I’d be looking at the service our strikers have had this season. Ba was playing more of a Rooney role when he was here. At times he was dropping back into midfield to get the ball leaving us effectively strikerless.
With the new boys -Sissoko in particular, and Cabs back plus Debuchy’s excellent delivery -see that first time ball for Cisse to volley against Reading- he’ll get the chances and he’ll put them away.
I’m excited about the possibilities with this team, especially if we did add another top striker/winger or attacking midfielder like De Jong, Mertens or Lens.
We’d have the depth and quality to be able to change formations quickly -not just making bizzare substitutions but actually changing our shape effectively if things aren’t going our way IF Pardew knows how too. That really is the big question.

  • 394 Dannyo // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:17 AM

the thing with cisse was that last season he put every chance and even half chance away.

That was obviously never going to continue, the goals at chelsea, home against villa etc dont go in every time.

I think he will get back and be very good again but hopefully gouffran will help take some pressure off him, cabaye too.

  • 402 Dannyo // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:35 AM

Cisse has been a shadow of himself imo, his work ethic has improved over the season, so has his hold up play, but he’s giving up the half chances, and that isn’t good.
I would be happier if he attempted even more shots, even outside the 16 yarder, that’s what he did so well last season and for Frankfurt. He needs belief, he doesn’t have it atm.

    Time will tell I guess

  • 405 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:37 AM

cisse has annoyed me this year in games….he shoots a lot as if he doesn’t care…just swinging his leg and not seeming to think about what he is actually doing or where he wants the ball to go.

  • 406 WWYCD // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:44 AM

Was just something someone put up on here (I think) didn’t pay much attention to it at the time but if it happened I figured there would be more news on it this morning

Aye he seems to be second guessing his instinct atm and that’s brought his work ethic down there have been flashes of him getting back to his best but its not been backed up

He needs to step up now though we need him too Gouffran should push him (and hopefully chip in) and Sholas still wanting game time…might have a few goals from midfield though to prop us up as well

  • 407 Dannyo // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:45 AM

  • 408 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:48 AM

  • 409 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:49 AM

    Yeh couldn’t agree more.

I hope we are still in for a striker. I think we might go back in for PEA but not 100% sure on that.

    torq might have heard something.

  • 410 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:49 AM

You mean like he did when we first saw him against Villa and when he scored a goal described as the best of the season against Chelsea. Cisse is an instinctive goalscorer who has been off form. When frustration sets in Often things get worse before they get better. He needs to relax more but I am sure Pardew is telling him that. Frequently being caught offside in his case I would suggest comes from a case of being overly anxious to do well. In fact his problem is the complete opposite of not caring.

  • 411 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:51 AM

Only Ba played well this season.

  • 412 Dannyo // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:51 AM

Exactly, what he does seems like he lacks the effort to actually try. It’s got something to do with mentality. Maybe when the team fires on all cylinders he’ll raise his game.
He’s not a gamechanging type of player, so we’ll have to wait it seems. That doesn’t mean I don’t have faith in him though.

  • 413 WWYCD // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:52 AM

cant say i,ve seen any of the strikers we are linked with, so would go foe pea from what everyones said, i think well see a striker in, but it wont be anyone we are linked with lukako is very promising but dont think theres a chance.the main thing for us is we,ve brought in some v good defensive players and hopefully can stop leaking goals now when we r winning, and are more creative players will be able to concentre going forward and more goals should come, we,ve had a great transfere window and it hasnt finished yet and its all quality now get us a forward who can help cisse and score goals..

  • 415 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:56 AM

I don’t think it’s not trying as such…more that last season he had an inform cabaye and ben arfa feeding him perfect passes where as this season he hasn’t had them both on form in all his games so when he sees the long ball it just disheartens him and he makes runs too early to try and make something happen.

  • 416 WWYCD // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:56 AM

I’d be over the moon with another striker of note coming in but I think PEA is far more likely a summer target along with Siem de Jong

  • 417 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 28, 2013 at 8:57 AM

    The team’s been abysmal.
    Cisse has had poor service.
Often isolated. If the ball does come to him he has both CB’s to deal with, then the goalie.
No one is running channels creating space for Cisse.

I think its more down to the team than Cisse.

Hopefully the problem has been solved.

I would agree that cisse hasn’t had much help.

On sky sports, cant remember who it was, possibly gary neville, was talking about torres at chelsea and saying now he doesn’t have blistering pace he needs players from midfield to run past him so that it gives him more space and options.

I think the same can be said of cisse….he is often leading the line alone and not got people in front of him to free up space and stretch the defence.

Hopefully gouffran and ben arfa will provided this now…as well as support from cabaye.

  • 420 yo-yo // Jan 28, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Rodgers said: “I was bitterly disappointed with the young players as they had a chance to compete for a club that has to challenge for trophies.

“We lost our concentration and only had spells in the last 35 minutes when we were at the right level.”

He added: “The intensity of our game was nowhere near where it should be at the beginning. We gave the ball away too easily and were not strong enough physically.

So Rodgers is slagging off his younger second string players too in public.

Not just a Toon problem then..

  • 421 Markaccus // Jan 28, 2013 at 9:05 AM

How good is this. For the first time in ashleys reign, with less than a week to go, that gut wrenching feeling of disappointment of no signings on the horizon is completely absent. Even if we were to hear the words ‘no more transfer business for nufc this window’ at this stage, it would only be the very smallest of let downs re a true ba replacement, although I’m sure we would be fine until summer. We might still get a striker, so who knows!?

  • 422 toonfield // Jan 28, 2013 at 9:06 AM

Don’t know how good that info is or whether its a smokescreen

  • 423 Wayayman // Jan 28, 2013 at 9:08 AM

Ok, let me rephrase that. Cisse didn’t play in his ‘natural’ position until the Reading game.
Goufrran might be the signing of the window here, if he makes the runs into the channels with his pace. Looking at Sissoko’s style of play, he seems to like to get at people then play a pass out wide before bursting into the box.
With Cisse being more of a predator, we might have a few more goals to our game if Gouffran is played as a winger/striker (a la Ginola)

With Yanga-Mbiwa and Colo at the back with Debuchy being a proper full back, we could be hard penetrate too.

Cabs running the game, Anita breaking up and oppo attacks.

    It’s suddenly looking quite exciting.

Maybe Santon as LW and HBA as RW will create more space since both of them are the best dribbler in our team and draw oppositions to close them creating more space for Cisse.

Rogers was right to criticise….same as Pardew was partially right to.

Slagging off their ability will do them no good but saying it about there effort is a different thing. Players, and people in general now, are far too pampered and not told what they need to hear, sometimes you need to be told when you aren’t pulling your weight.

Especially in a job like a professional footballer where if you carry on like that you will have 10’s of thousands of fans on your back if you aren’t applying yourself.

About the AC debate, I like many loved his efforts in black and white. while some think im a total AC lover his off pitch nonsense pales in comparison to our plastic gangster power ranger. I not that inamoured with AC, but I feel he might be back for whatever reason and I think he can do a job – but only on the right terms for the club.

I look forward to les bleus revolution, an expansive passing game which should work. But,there will be games where it wont and going direct with AC or similar might help us nick it like myself and others its about tactical options and AC hasnt been the same player since he left. Kenny messed him up imo, bought players to play a certain way and changed his mind and tried to play a different system with the same players and in the main fu@@ed it up. I think London is bad for him, I know its not our problem etc but I’m sure its hindering him and he wants to be back. Our old mixed tactics worked a treat. But on with now…..

RVW to finish this window. Then who knows…..
