Newcastle Ponder More Signings Before Thursday Night

10:49 am, Monday, January 28th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 33 Comments

The Journal is reporting today they think the influx of players at the club in January has now ended – but Newcastle still have a few targets they may try to get into the club this month, rather than wait for the summer.

jack butland 321

Jack Butland – coming to Newcastle?

One of those potential targets is 19 year-old goalkeeper Jack Butland of Birmingham, and the Midlands club wants to sell their England International this month – to get much needed funds into the Birmingham coffers.

Butland’s price has been reduced, and he could now be acquired for around £3.5M, and that seems a decent price for one of the best goalkeeper prospects to arrive on the England scene for some time – although Jack is still learning his trade.

And it would be good, if a little unusual to sign an Englishman for a change.

Another potential target is still another 19 year-old – Bastia’s Florian Thauvin –  with Newcastle having a £2.5M bid turned down by his club, and maybe Newcastle will go back in with an improved offer, knowing that he also an Arsenal target.

Florian would then be loaned back to Bastia for the rest of that season, and the same goes for Jack Butland – who would be allowed to play for Birmingham through the end of the seasons –  before joining Newcastle in pre-season – if we sign him this month.

If we don’t get these two in this month – they will be targets in the summer – but Newcastle will move if they need to this month – to ensure they become Newcastle players – if  that is necessary.

But the reports that we may be after strikers Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Wilfried Bony or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have been dismissed by the club – and that will come as a disappointment to Newcastle fans.

So we suppose another top striker will be a major target in the summer – as it was last summer, when we missed out on Luuk de Jong – who is now struggling a bit at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Butland is one for the future, would be immense to buy him now and send him back to Birmingham on Loan

I still think we need a striker though, anyone agree?

Agee 100% and I hope we get another Cisse success

siem de jong says he is tempted by a 9m move to newcastle united (twitter and wikipedia)

  • 5 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2013 at 10:54 AM

No thanks to butland…..one of the most over rated players in the championship.

Every week on soccer saturday he is said to make ‘an uncharacteristic error’…..seeing as this is a weekly even it is becoming a characteristic error.

  • 6 Rake // Jan 28, 2013 at 10:58 AM

We need a good young keeper to be pushing Krul or eventually replace him.
No point going on about the LW/ST situation but personally I’m hoping for PEA!

I am very happy with the players we have brought in, they defo tighten up the back line, and stenghten the Cental Midfeild area and got good cover at in these areas now………But without sounding negitive & our posistion in league on what has been a very good window IF Cisse, HBA, Gouffan or Marveaux get injured Shola, Ranger, Jonas & Obertan…….Maybe get one player in then in summer ship players like, Raylor, Simpson, Perch, Williamson, Jonas, Obertan, Gosling, Xisco & Shola out and strengthen our attacking areas

  • 8 Dannyo // Jan 28, 2013 at 10:59 AM

Aubameyang has not been dismissed, we’re deffo after him. Just not this month as things stand.
RvW and Bony has been rubbished.

Butland though, yes please, he’s english, he’s an international, and he’s there for £3.5M which is a snip. Harper contract ends in the summer, Elliott is strictly average+. Dunno much about Alnwick though.

Also cant wait to see how Gouffran adapts! His top form for bordeaux has come playing upfront by himself, hes always looked a bit lost pn the wing! Alot of ppl say he found his level in france but i think he’ll enjoy the space hel get behind defences in england, in ligue one it is harder to score goals for pacey strikers as defences just sit! Think he will become more important than people realise, he would have cost 8-10m if hed been in contract longer!

  • 10 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:01 AM

I dont think we need a good young keeper at all….we have krul who can play the next 15 years.

We need a good keeper who is happy to be back up….like cudicini has been a lot for the past 10 years.

I’d take given back as a sub keeper for the next 3/4 years….pushes krul to keep performing and also is a very good player if needed.

  • 11 croftus5678 // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:04 AM

watched butland at the olympics and though he was out of this world a close to krull as he stands atm but saying that i think elliot is a great keeper aswell when i have seen him play so do we really need him unless we are thinking of accepting 15mil for krull ? which may be good business if we are to keep quality in goal and get a world class striker .

  • 12 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:04 AM

    dannyo

Butland is vastly over rated…he isn’t even the best english keeper in the championship.

He wont come to sit on the bench at Krul is twice the player.

  • 13 toonfield // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Imo butland has only been enquired about in case somebody puts a stupid bid in for krul. There have been reports of teams been interested and I think we are covering ourselves by looking at targets just in case.

  • 14 jayphoto // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Butland could easily be first choice for us! Theres not much difference in ability between him and krul, he even has some attributes over krul like dustribution! Keep seeing krul linked with milan and barca, cant begrudge a player that kind of career move if we could sign butland for peanuts! Cant deny it would be nice for us to field one or 2 english players still

  • 15 Dannyo // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:08 AM

    @Transfer
You have to remember he’s only 19. He’s prone to error at that age as he’s still very much learning.
Look at Sammy, Tav and Fergy. Potential but far from realised at their age.

  • 16 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:09 AM

I honestly think that in 2/3 years people will be writing butland off as another scott carson

much rather have krul…elliot is a decent enough stand in although i would prefer somebody better if they will sit on the bench and try to push krul.

  • 17 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:10 AM

The Journo,s are playing a guessing game.

No-one knows exactly what the club is doing at the moment? I prefer it that way too!

There has been reports about RVW and Boney but nothing concrete? I can think of at least 25 players that have been looked at and scouted by Carr and the club over the last few months, prior to and after BA,s departure.

It may well be that no-one else comes before the window shuts but i am kind of hoping that before Thursday evening there will be a surprise package arriving at St James to sign a long term contract with us?

  • 18 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:12 AM

    dannyo

I accept that….but an error from a goalkeeper is usually much more costly than an error from a striker or winger.

I think butland makes too many errors, no where near solid enough to play top flight football.

He looks good in a poor birmingham side as he gets to make a lot of saves, but in most games I have seen him I think there is usually a goal conceded where you would expect him to have done better.

  • 19 shear-class // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:13 AM

If Krul Is to be a top class Keeper then he needs to be A lot more Vocal and command his box a lot more he has been found wanting this season ,and signing a new goalkeeper might give him a kick up the ass

  • 20 Wayayman // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Krul was on fire last season. Outstanding.
He’s not lived up to it so far, but the same could be said for all of our squad this season.

Things change though, hopefully starting tomorrow night at Villa!

  • 21 AshSays // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:17 AM

Not convinced on RVW but there are more reports (head title on http://www.ojogo.pt)that he might have just played his last game for Sporting.

  • 22 ArmeeDuToon // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Gouffran’s ability should be a welcome surprise to many, he is not a classical Centre Forward, but is still good enough to bag 12 to 15 goals a season in the EPL from a wide position. Comparisons to Walcott are not out of place.

Thauvin would be great for the future, but never going to be a big goalscorer, more of a creative playmaker. In my view he has his heart set on Arsenal anyway.

Much as I like Gouffran, I would desperately love to see another Striker in by Thursday. Aubameyang would be my first choice, worth pushing the boat out for, even at £12m. He has all the qualities to become a Toon legend. Bony looks strong but lacks pace, although has potential to be a new Yakubu – looks overweight and lazy, but keeps on scoring. Not convinced by Van Wolfswinkel so far. Would be happy for a loan signing if we can’t find the right permanent deal – Macheda would have been a decent temporary fix before Stuttgart snapped him up, Guidetti also impressive but may not be available.

Any more decent young strikers we could loan anyone?

  • 23 barcodejoe // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:45 AM

why oh why do we not go for Ince from Blackpool, he can play up front or just behind the main striker, what i buy he would be….

  • 24 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:48 AM

What exactly does this word “Ponder ” mean?

    @22:

I would take Ince in a heart beat mate, be a good signing but like i said on another post, no-one has the slightest idea whats going on at the Mo? Not even the Journo,s!

  • 25 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:49 AM

    Said that on this post?

  • 26 WLtoon // Jan 28, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Hop we we are,nt targeting Wolfswinkel,. i think he.d struggle in the Prem. Alot of fans were gutted when we did,nt get De Jong, i was,nt.. He played in a poor dutch league, and now he,s playing i n Germany he,s struggling in a higher standard of football. i think it will be the same for Wolfie.
i dont like the fact that we are looking for another keeper. i keep thinking Krull could be on his way in the summer.

  • 27 LEROI // Jan 28, 2013 at 1:48 PM

I still think Krul is on the top 10 keepers in the world list. Butland has potential undoubtedly but that kid ain’t proved half what wor Tim has.

  • 28 lesh // Jan 28, 2013 at 2:23 PM

Transfer Sage , yes we may not need a keeper at the moment and Butland still has much to learn.

However, with Haprer’s contarct ending soon we could extend it for another year, having him as player/ keeper coach.

And as Butland needs to developfurther, he could do so at back at Birmingham City – where he’d still be in the running for England caps.

In the meantime, our £3.5m investemnt’s appreciating in value.

Now if I can see it, surely MA can and I think there’s a real possibiblity it could happen this window – before his value increases?

From a financial view, buying him makes a lot of sense in my view.

    At

  • 29 toonluvva // Jan 28, 2013 at 4:42 PM

We must think of the future.

There is a chance that some team will put in a big bid for Krul and I expect MA to take cash. However getting Butland will add much needed cover between the sticks for us.

Is MA starting to get the hang of this football business at last? Spending wisely (we hope) and reinforcing the squad.

Keep this up and we might come to tolerate him!

  • 30 numba9 // Jan 28, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Not interested in A goal keeper. Far more important is the twenty goal a season man to replace the one that left. It is that simple

  • 31 Grahameo // Jan 28, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Ermmm… Did IQ’s just drop all of a sudden?

What is the point in signing two young player now and loaning them back?
We end up with registered players on the fair play roster and end up paying at least 25% of their new and improved wages!
Then there is the fact that Pardew has already stated that NO MORE SIGNINGS are coming and £9 million estimated for both players can make a hell of a lot of money for the club sitting in the bank earning interest (enough to pay two player’s wages no less) until the summer transfer window…
Ed…. Wake up and smell the coffee mate, it ain’t going to happen… Some common sense when posting this stuff might help!

  • 32 Phil K // Jan 29, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Rumours are that Pierre Aubermayuang (or whatever the name is spelt !) is wanting to come NOW not Summer, and pressure is on his club

  • 33 Phil K // Jan 29, 2013 at 12:01 PM

I’d keep Ryan Taylor, and loan out Gosling not sell (Injury prone is an understatement)
