As expected Newcastle completed the transfer of the 17 year old Swiss youngster Kevin Mbabu from Servette for an undisclosed fee, estimated at around £1M.
Kevin Mbabu training at Newcastle today
The 17-year-old center-back is one of the top young defenders in Switzerland, and Newcastle beat out Manchester United to his signature.
Mbabu joined Servette only six months ago and played once for the first team last September, when he came on as a second half substitute against Lausanne.
The is what Kevin said after signing along the bottom line for Newcastle:
“I am delighted to join Newcastle United,” he said. “Today is a big day for me. I’ve always wanted to sign for a club in the Premier League and Newcastle is one of the biggest there is.”
“I want to finish my development here with the Reserves before one day training with the first team and hopefully breaking into the first team.”
Kevin will go straight into the Development squad and Scot Willie Donachie, the manager of Newcastle’s Development squad, had this to say about his latest acquisition
“Kevin is strong, confident, skilful and a very good prospect. “He still has a lot to do as he is only 17-years-old, but I saw him playing for Switzerland Under 19s against Scotland and he did really well. “He can play central defence or right-back and if he keeps working hard then he could have a great future in the game.”
We welcome Kevin to the club.
And Mehdi Abeid has agreed to go out on loan to St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premier League until the end of the season.
The 20 year-old sent out this on his Twitter account after the loan was agreed:
“Départ for saint johnstone on loan for the rest of the season! #needa game!”
Abeid has so far made just two FA Cup appearances for Newcastle, and we’re sure the loan spell with do Mehdi the world of good, because he needs to play some first team games.
21 year-old Paul Dummett will rejoin St Mirren on loan following a very successful loan spell earlier this season, and we expect other top youngsters like Shane Ferguson, Sammy Ameobi and James Tavernier to be sent out on loan to play some first team games through the end of this season.
PS – still a few hours left for Newcastle to sign Ricky van Wolfswinkel from Sporting Lisbon – now that the club have convinced everybody they are doing no more deals in January.
A window of opportunity – we wish.
