Mike Ashley Flies Into Newcastle To Meet New Signings

1:51 pm, Thursday, January 31st, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 45 Comments

Derek Llambias has talked to the press this morning,  and said Newcastle are absolutely done in the transfer market this month – so we don’t know if that rules out the reported move for 17 year-old Swiss center back Kevin Mbabu, who will join the Development squad if he is signed today.

Mike Ashley - owner jetted into Newcastle today

And it’s good that owner Mike Ashley has jetted into Newcastle  today to introduce himself to Newcastle’s new signings of last week,  and also meet with Derek LLambias and manager Alan Pardew.

This is what the Newcastle Managing Director had to say this morning:

“Mike has come to say hello to the new recruits, welcome them to the club and see the rest of the team and the manager, so it is good that he has flown in today.” “We are absolutely done. It has been a very busy window for us and we are very delighted that we have those targets.”

“Last time we had a lot of pressure on the last two days, too much pressure, that is not going to happen.”  “Mike has come today to reassure everybody our crown jewels are all in place. And they are absolutely staying.’

Mike Ashley has received high marks from most Newcastle fans last week, for orchestrating getting four top players into the club in four days,  after Newcastle’s terrible defeat at home to Reading a week last Saturday.

The acquisition of some very good players plus the fantastic result at Aston Villa on Tuesday night,  has raised the spirits of Newcastle fans everywhere, and now we hope we can finish above 12th place and 46 points – which is where we finished two years ago.

Newcastle are on 24 points after 24 games at the moment,  and that’s exactly where we were in our relegation season after 24 games played – but we gained only 10 points from our final 14 games in 2009 and ended up relegated – but we should do a lot better this time.

The squad is now much stronger than last month, with some top players coming in and stalwarts like Yohan Cabaye, Steven Taylor and eventually Ben Arfa (two weeks away?) returning from long term injuries.

We seem to be in decent shape – but we have to press on and every one of our last 14 games is important.

    Tranfer

Benteke would be the best of the best for us. I said several times here Matri would be very good for us now us a backup, and he would be very cheap since Juve landed Anelka and Llorente

Repost with amendment for clarity on my alarmist posts yesterday –

Well I know Ashley doesn’t normally stay in Toon during the week, but he was definitely driving around Jesmond last night in a black BMW, and not yards from him on the same roads was our mate Colo in his Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Both Alone (part of my failed conspiracy theory earlier – I thought something was afoot but like I said 2+2 does not actually =5 after all).

Anyay I am moving away from the scaremongering business it doesn’t pay.

A mackem (ahem) associate of mine says D Graham was roundly scorned by the crowd at the scum v swans game the other day. Dont expect he will be welcomed into the fold unless he puts 3 past us.

Without a full complement of strikers we will probably have to revert to the fabled strike from an attacking midfield/carpetball that Pards promised his new boys we would play after all.

Either that or the Row Z hoof thing. Again.

  • 15 Transfer Sage // Jan 31, 2013 at 1:59 PM

    tequila

Your previous post on the last article.

I think Campbell would thrive and come through well in our team. Ideally once the new boys settle and we have some fluidity though ideally.

I think he is very good and much better than ranger. I think that Campbell would get a few goals.

The reason sammy gets slated on here is he has a same lazy attitude as his brother at times…he saunters around in both defense and attack, never really looks like he is doing anything.

  • 16 tequilamag // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:01 PM

Beef, don`t be fooled by JFA username, he has always been open-minded in his thoughts which is a hell of a lot more than some posters.

  • 17 JAMSHA // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:03 PM

Any1 thinks xisco must be on the bench insted of strola???? i feel bad for that lad….. better than ranger atleast

  • 18 Transfer Sage // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:03 PM

    tequila

read your response on the last page.

I disagree on sammi, I think he doesn’t make enough forward runs, he doesn’t close down, he doesn’t track back like ben arfa has to.

I think he is not good enough currently. Stick him on loan in the championship for a year to teach him he needs to work for his place if he wants to stay and let him see the alternative if he doesn’t buck his ideas up.

  • 19 tequilamag // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:05 PM

TS, it`s all about opinions mate, sammi has more skill than Shola and a damn sight quicker. I have no doubts on Campbells talent but throwing him into a relegation struggle is not the way forward. As for Europe as some have suggested, it`s the only chance we have of winning something. I think Pards will play much stronger teams now we are through to knock out stages.

  • 20 Twatter // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:05 PM

There were no chants for Ashley at Villa, and I can’t really understand why there ever would’ve been? He’s only given us the decent-sized squad we’ve needed for ages. Let’s not be fickle and pretend we’re indebted to him – we as the fans bankroll this club anyway, at least for the most part. He just sanctions how the club spends the money the fans have given him.

  • 21 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:05 PM

    Evening lads!

I has been a good window no doubt – not to sound ungrateful or anything, but we should have signed another forward!

…I cannot help thinking this a gamble (once again) we should not be taking.

If Cissé gets long term injures and Shola is always a walking disaster happening :) – are we putting our faith in Goufrann to gets us through (always though both Ranger and Xisco was through here…but maybe not) lol

A bit of a shame, but we’ll just have to do once again!

  • 25 tequilamag // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:07 PM

TS sammi has struggled to make an inpact this season as have all the young players but I think you over egg the lazy aspect. He gets tagged with that label due to his surname, though I agree a loan is the best option for him, and Campbell.

  • 26 Hatem's better than Messi // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Jamsha’s post #17 surely shows we need another striker in this window.

  • 27 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Jesper…We needed an extra ST really even before Ba went, so I do agree it is a gamble. Not the biggest in the world like last summer, but a gamble all the same.

    And yes, it’s afternoon :)

  • 28 beefman13 // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:08 PM

Tequilla, i must admit i have a moan about our manager, im thinkin of a new username, Pardew for sunderland!

cant believe we’re not getting another striker through the door – even a stop gap would do me to give us more options than sholla coming off the bench!

  • 33 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:12 PM

Ibiza…that was my thinking as well (plus if one of them is firing blank you always have options from the bench)

…thought it was quite clear at the Villa game (when both Cissé and Goufrann started) that we didn’t have many options on the bench!

Told #nufc still open to cash offers only for Danny Simpson. But nothing doing so far.

  • 36 boreddrummer // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:13 PM

Not to sound ungrateful for the good work the club has put in getting the transfers they have, but I can’t help but feel disappointed we haven’t brought a forward in to replace Ba. No disrespect to Gouffran but he doesn’t exactly strike me as player who’s going to get you 20 a season, if Cisse is out for whatever reason there is no replacement for him. Ameobi is a decent bloke to have on the bench but that’s it in my eyes, and as I say Gouffran seems to be a support striker, so given that a replacement for Ba was supposed to be on the top of our agenda, what happened?

  • 37 tequilamag // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:13 PM

Beef, Ican understand posters doubts about Pardew, football is a results business. I would hangfire on the changing your name though. Look at last minute window lies or whatever his name is.

  • 38 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:14 PM

Robcstar…. Doesn’t need to be this dragged out.

Just shout “He’s signed” or “In a medical”. Simple :)

Jesper…As always we will have to see. I’m not going to complain as the window has overall been a great one.

  • 39 Transfer Sage // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:15 PM

    tequila

I still think sammi should be working harder than he does. Maybe he just can’t hack the pace of play and gets lost off and just needs time to develop so he can get involved.

I’m not writing him off just think that a full season in the championship where he has responsibility to perform and some expectation to make a difference would be good for him.

Same for vukic too, he needs to get a full season as he has so much talent.

  • 41 tequilamag // Jan 31, 2013 at 2:20 PM

TS well on that we are both agreed, time will tell on the Sammi issue. My criticism of Sammi is he often tries to do too much when he has the ball. He needs to learn when to pass rather than rely on running at players all the time.

  • 42 LooneyToon41 // Jan 31, 2013 at 3:16 PM

@29 jesper and @36bored. I understand your frustrations regarding a replacement striker. I think that Loic Remy was that striker, until QPR snatched him, and NUFC had already done the groundwork.

Once that battle was lost, i just don’t think we had a plan B for spending loads of cash this window. I think its good that we don’t make ‘rash’ buying decisions, and i’m sure there will be loads of work done between now and the summer for another striker, and a top class replacement CB for Colo…. presuming he leaves in the summer!

  • 43 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 31, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Lol nobody wants to sign Danny Simpson? Why would Wigan want to sign him? Boyce is miles better.

  • 44 bills-son // Jan 31, 2013 at 6:03 PM

Waking up from a tight ar$ed Ashley nightmare to find Mike has made four terrific new signings is FAR too good for JFA.

  • 45 bills-son // Jan 31, 2013 at 6:07 PM

I agree we need another ST but lets not forget HBA – he’ll get a sackful with Sissoko and Cabaye laying chances on + Cabaye will score more as he can get further forward now especially once Tiote returns to do the defensive stuff.

This side is full of goals – I bet we hit a team for 5 or 6 before the season ends.
