Newcastle Still Short Of A Top Striker

For the first time in a long time, Newcastle now have four experienced center-backs at the club in Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and new boy Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – but the same cannot be said of our strikers – and we still have only three experienced strikers in the squad.

mapou yanga-mbiwa 91

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – top center-back signed this month

Demba Ba left on January 4th, but Newcastle signed the impressive Yoan Gouffran last week, and if we go by his performance at Villa Park on Tuesday night, he will combine much better with Papiss Cisse than Demba Ba did, although it’s unlikely Yoan will be as prolific as the Senegal striker was in scoring goals.

It was also apparent that Newcastle were much more fluent on Tuesday night than they have been of late – at least in the first half – and gone were the high long balls into the box, and Newcastle were passing the ball on the ground well, and quite honestly we looked a class side in the first 45 minutes with new boy Moussa Sissoko simply outstanding and dominant in central midfield.

We were almost convinced last Monday that Newcastle were going after another top striker this month – with Newcastle being linked with Sporting Lisbon’s Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Wilfried Bony of Vitesse, St. Etienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and even Pavel Pogrebnyak of Reading – but that turned out to be false reporting – which is common in any transfer window.

None of those strikers will arrive today – and so we are still short of an experienced striker – since most top clubs in the Premier League have four experienced strikers as well as four top center-backs.

It could well be that Newcastle will pursue one of the first three this summer, and may even have laid the groundwork to getting one of them through the door this summer, when we could also see the impressive Ajax captain Siem de Jong join Newcastle this summer.

We hope we can get two or three more top players through the door this summer, and if we can keep the best players we already have we’ll have one of our strongest squads for many years come August.

Here’s hoping. 😀

Comments welcome.

Cisse, Gouffran and Shola when we play 1 up top isnt too short tbf should see us through to safety and outside shot of a top half finish with some luck

Doubt we will get anyone else in this window in all honesty though rumours will fly around

Hmm I shouldn’t complain but we really do need another striker… a left sided attacker/winger would be ideal, we have one in Marveaux but we are short of good wingers and could do with the addition. I expect Gouffran and Marveaux will flank Cisse with HBA (when he’s fit) just behind, which sounds great to me but all it takes is an injury or two… Is Ryan Taylor out all season?

    You can never have enough.

    We have 3.
One unproven in a new league, new country … etc
    One is Shola …

I think this is crazy and a massive gamble.

i can only think of packing the midfield with goal scorers i.e. cabaye/marv/arfa and then hope for the best if any of them are injured.

Fell free to ignore me then.

But if you had listened to updates from the club themselves then they have said in the past 2 days offers may be considered if the right fee.

    Their stance has changed.

It’s always a gamble playing the waiting game (last season when you a flying high you are more excused, but when you are down in the gutter it’s difficult to defend)

    …at least for me!

Don’t see how we could incorporate another central striker – unless we are prepared to play 4-4-2- have the Cisse on the wing hysteria – or they warm the bench. Even with Cisse available, I still think we lack the goals to do anything other than scrape a few narrow victories – and Gouffran wasn’t signed to warm the bench at 26.

I like this idea of loaning players to SPL sides, its slightly above championship level and its easy to get plenty of games. I think we should set something up with st. mirren as they’ve had decent success with dummet and newton. Much better then throwing them head first into a relegation scrap

TS has merely suggested PEA, nobody is going to have a pop at him…. Feel the love on the blog, it could get better !

boater…there is something called rotation and there are forwards that can play wide in a modern continental style of play (it doesn’t have to be ugly and it doesn’t have to be 4-4-2 ;)) lol

you need a good squad and options on the bench…we have that in midfield but we still dont upfront.

With cabaye and sissoko we can afford to play 442 as them two in the middle will control a game and cisse and gouff (or a new boy) would be a good option.
