Marveaux Fit Again – Available For Chelsea Game

10:48 am, Friday, February 1st, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 207 Comments

Some really good news from the Newcastle camp today – as the foot injury sustained by Sylvain Marveaux last Monday was not as bad as first feared – and in fact he is fit and available for selection against Chelsea tomorrow.

sylvain marveaux wigan

Sylvain Marveaux – fit again for Chelsea game

That’s really good news because Sylvain has really come into his own these last couple of months – and he will be able to start on the right wing tomorrow – forming a front three with new boy Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse in the center.

The former Rennes winger and French U21 International was in training again yesterday and, after surprisingly missing out against Villa, he is available again for selection.

This is what Alan Pardew said today:

“Marveaux was unfortunate to get injured just before the game because he would have started the game.” “However, the team did so well it means I have a decision to make.” “The team will be pretty much as it was.” “We have to build on Villa now, that one is done.”

We suppose Marveaux could now come in for James Perch in the starting eleven tomorrow, in the important games against Chelsea – but as Alan says he does have some selection decisions to make for tomorrow’s game  – although he could simply start the same side that did so well on Tuesday night.

Then he will have plenty of skill and strength on the bench for second half substitutions.

Comments welcome.

I’d heard Marv was out for three weeks, great to have him back so soon. Developing in to a real favourite of mine.

  • 2 John Tudor // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:52 AM

is that an excuse creeping out

  • 3 John Tudor // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:54 AM

if he was odds on to start at villa he should start against chelsea thank you perchy ill get you on after 60 mins

  • 4 toonfield // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:54 AM

    Team as it was…
    Jonas in again then

  • 5 rainrix // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:55 AM

The logical move would be marv for jonas but yeah thats not happening. We really need a holding midfielder as well so i wouldnt drop perch either. Marv for the bench it seems, although it is nice to actually have some quality to bring on, Marv, anita mbiwa instead of shola sammy and obertan with even more quality when hba and tiote come back.

  • 6 Carryingcoals // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:56 AM

Perch is a better holding midfielder than Jonas, Marveaux is a better winger than Jonas. Despite Jonas being of greater stature than Perch in the squad, I’d keep him in. Could be pretty useful in disrupting Chelsea’s midfield…

Another repost :slow down Ed man
I think that now Pards has got so to speak the tools he needs for the job it will be easier to judge him now, I myself was losing faith in him very quickly but thought a lot of the criticism he was getting was unfair as he wasn’t even half backed to the extent he has been this time, so I suppose now is judgement time for him, I just hope he keeps his gob shut for a bit and let his team and points gained do his talking for him, I wasn’t impressed with his comments after the Villa game when asked what happened in the second half he smirked and then replied the French lads legs went, should have been bigging the all up after the excellent starts they made.

I’d like marv for jonas and anita for perch really.

However I think we will see the exact same team after what pards has said. Hopefully they get the job done.

  • 10 Rowan Milsted // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:57 AM

    My team for Chelski:

    Krul
    Debuchy-Taylor-Colo-Santon
    Anita
    Cabaye-Sissoko
    Goffran-Cisse-Marveaux

If French players are tiring we could bring Perch or Guti on for Sissoko (ideal if we’re winning with 10-15 mins to play) and Obers for Gouffran (he’s a better late sub than a starter).

It’s a fairly narrow formation but Santon and Debuchy can provide width. If they go forward, Anita and/or Sissoko can drop. Sissoko and Cabaye will be strong in the middle and provide service for Cisse, with Gouffron and Marveaux coming in off the flanks and pulling defenders around.

  • 11 Carryingcoals // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:58 AM

    sage

Whilst I like Anita, I’d prefer Perch in there I think. I can see him putting himself about more, could be needed in a game of this nature…

If it was Marv who got a lump kicked out of him in that match he would of disappeared instantly never to be seen again, least Jonas stood up and got mad (and I reckon had a cheeky hint at Perch who then took a few lumps out of that little Austrian ball bag)

  • 13 lordy_geordie // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:58 AM

hey guys was just remembering worse players to ever play foitball. Does anyone remember that guy souness signed? it wasnt for us but he got a call from an agent saying george weahs cousin was available or something. well he signed him based on tht and i remember the lad came on as a sub and did so bad he took him off 10 minutes later and never ayed him again lol

  • 14 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 10:59 AM

    WWYCD

    Yes I do.

I think every player want’s to be here and are focused on NUFC. (maybe other than Ben Arfa who seems to me to want to play at NUFC for the project rather than the money) .

I think most players would seriously consider big offers but wouldn’t actively peruse them like Ba did.

Ba was on a goal bonus and played for himself, our current guys look to play as a team despite being on a goal bonus.

Ba is very different to our current players. I think our current team have dreams of winning medals where as Ba had dreams of winning a big wage.

Guarantee Ba will be playing in Saudi Arabia in 2-3 years.

  • 15 TorqToon // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:00 AM

If keep perch in to hold and switch our Jonas for Marv.

But like others on here – I feel it will be an unchanged side. Taylor & colo need to be careful – one bad game and Mbiwa will be in – and I rate him to keep his spot for the duration.

  • 16 rainrix // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:00 AM

Carrying… Great minds :) only a minutes difference though

Sage… I think its really vital we have a defensive midfielder. Anita to me is more a classic CM more technical but cant impose himself as much on the opposition as perch. It may be a better option to start anita and have a generally more attacking team then bring on perch later for more control. Although like you said it doesn’t really matter pards has confirmed the same team, unless he’s playing pesky mind games ;)

  • 17 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:01 AM

    Perch cannot play.

We need a pacey, technical ball winner in there to cope with the movement of Mata, Oscar and Ramieres,

    Perch will get destroyed.

  • 18 croftus5678 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:01 AM

    i’ll go with

    ————————-krull———————
    ———saylor——-mbiwa——collo——
    debuchy——————————santon
    ———-sissoko–cabaye–anita———–
    ————–goofy—–cisse—————–

looks good on paper if marv just back from injury give him time to get back to full fitness esp against chelsea then we can bring him on as sub if needed.

  • 19 rainrix // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Carrying… It appears you have just beaten me to it now, swings and roundabouts :)

  • 20 Transfer Sage // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:02 AM

    Carrying

Perch is a good enough player to do the DM role so i’m not too concerned.

I think marv has come into his own now, started playing with confidence after a little run and doing some good things. He hasn’t hidden like he had in early games for us.

I know what you mean mate, in fact I did defend Jonas’ role yesterday in Tuesday’s win. While I see your point and appreciate that Marv can fade out of games, I’d like to attack Chelsea from the off on the weekend and I think we’d be better suited to do so starting with Marv.

  • 22 Carryingcoals // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:03 AM

I would put money down that every single one of our star players agents are trying to get moves every window

Most of our current crop came for more money that what they were on and they all have bonuses worked into their contract

Ba can play for money but he signed for the CL champions who compete for trophies every year…we dont

Good luck to Ba as far as am concerned

  • 25 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:04 AM

I think Marv is being brought in nicely, I think eventually he will take over from Jonas. He will be a starter mext season more than likely.

I feel Jonas is being given a chance at the moment to re-discover his form. Alot of his work these days is to defend and cover and let santon roam, I think this goes a little unnoticed at times.

Its alright saying yeah, santon & marv down the left but they are two very direct players which will more than likely leave gaping holes. There both quite young and inexperienced i feel, especially santon. Still alot to learn. Next season could be marvs season. Excellent option to come off the bench though. I like him.

  • 26 Transfer Sage // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:04 AM

    rainrix

between anita, cabs and sissoko they will put themselves about enough to disrupt chelsea but will also have the composure to keep he ball and use it well.

I have no issue with perch…i remember him playing CB in the home game against liverpool and he had suarez in his pocket, he can handle tricky little players so I feel comfortable if he starts.

  • 27 WWYCD // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:05 AM

    Carryingcoals
Yeah mate but Jonas will start haha (protects Santon a heck of a lot and our defence is going to need as much help as they can get tomorrow) Id drop Perch for Marv keep Cabs and Sissoko deeper

  • 28 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:06 AM

We can’t play normal Pardew tactics against Chelsea, we need to attack them.

Remember last season when we got beat 3-0, we were the much better team because we attacked. We were just unlucky. Sitting off Chelsea and allowing them to play is inviting a beating.

We need intensity from the defense and creativity from the front to have any chance of winning.

I think Saylor can keep Ba quiet, the threat is Oscar, Mata and Lampard.

  • 29 WWYCD // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Or could drop both Perch and Jonas bring in Anita and Marv play with 3 CMs and 2 out right wingers…seems unlikely though

  • 30 Transfer Sage // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:07 AM

    toon prodigy

My issue with jonas played as a defensive option is that is not the primary role of a winger. A winger should press upfield (when he has 3 centre mids for cover too) and track back to some extent but not for 90 mins.

I think that the role of the DM is to help when a fullback goes forward.

Best wing partnership is baines and pienaar…..when baines attacks pienaar isn’t sat in the back 4, he is running past and around baines to offer support. The whole point of the full back getting forward is to offer support, not take the place of the winger.

  • 31 rainrix // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Sage… Either way i have confidence with our midfield 3 regardless of anita or perch starting. I think we’re physically stronger than them in midfield.

I think a lot of people are underwhelmed when perch starts myself included, but generally he always delivers. Its generally nice to have these selection dilemmas for once :)

  • 32 Carryingcoals // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Yeah that is a fair point.

It wouldnt be a surprise to see exactly the same team as fielded for villa

I am usually negative but that is one of the most negative statements ever.

I don’t agree every star player is actively seeking moves. Granted that their agents will on their behalf but not on the players say so.

Not all footballers are like Demba, so it is unfair to tarnish them all with the same brush.

If a good opportunity came along I’m not saying they would stay, I am just saying they would consider staying.

Demba has moved 4 or 5 times in his career, most of our players only once.

Demba was here 18 months, hardly long enough to give us his all and leave us all with the happiest of memories.

It was a marriage of convenience. We used him for his goals, he used us for his bank account.

I owe him no thanks, he owed us no loyalty.

Do not group all players into the same pen. I know it makes things easier for when they go, but every circumstance is different.

  • 35 ~Anita One Bites the Dust~ // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Perch is a warrior. Since his revival he has been a consistent performer for us. I don’t mind at all if he starts.

I was thoroughly amused at how he was all over Weimann before being subbed.

    Crunching but fair tackles.

    ………………………cisse

  • 37 santonthenewmaldini // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:17 AM

We need to play Anita tomorrow him Cabs and Sissoko could potentially outplay Chelsea in the middle

    OR

We could play Perch Cabs and Sissoko in the middle with Marveux and Anita on the wings

Both offer pace , can dribble, have great movement and can cross actually think Anita has all the trademarks to be a good winger in the premier league

Either way Anita has to play as we have to attack them from the start as their defense is poor and if Cech is not playing we have a chance to get a couple of goals there is no point in Jonas playing from the start as we will just end up getting beat

He was good for playing against Villa because he can battle but this game is going to be about keeping possession Chelsea have got a great stat that the commentator on Match of the Day last week in that they have the best record in the league for capitalizing on mistakes and scoring from them so we cant afford to have players who lose the ball like Jonas in the team just leaves us too vulnerable

  • 38 Dukis22lt // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:18 AM

I dont want to see Jonas in the side again… I remember he used to be so good down that left side few seasons ago but he just doest have it anymore :( Marveux in Jonas out PLEASE!

  • 39 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Against Chelsea we should drop Sissoko back and play 3 CM rather than 2 DM and 1 AM IMO. Anita, Cabaye and Sissoko dropping back and pushing forward when attacking offers us pace, power and creativity.

We don’t need to rush the ball forward, don’t have to be so direct.

The full backs need to get forward to bring Marv and Goofy central to support Cisse with Sissoko bombing forward, Cabaye holding back and Anita slipping into the vacant full back position.

    Sorted.

    3-0 the toon

  • 40 John Tudor // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:19 AM

villa never really hurt it was the arrowed diagonal balls which should have been stopped at source chealsea is a totlly different game scenario

  • 41 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:20 AM

    Transfer,

    I hear you.

We have to be honest, Jonas hasn’t been a winger for a long time now. Pardew likes to have his defensive qualities and experience operating down there for some reason. Maybe its stats. Who knows. I feel its more of a protection for santon than anything else though. Santon is still very inexperienced and is still learning, i don’t think now is the time for that left handside.

It’s certaintly not down to form this season with Jonas. Its been a rough six months though, lets see what jonas can do with different players around him. These signings have bled confidence through the squad. I can’t wait for 3 oclock 2moro.

Sooner or later Marv will be given a run of games down there, i just hope it dosn’t leave Santon vulnerable.

  • 42 John Tudor // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Nothing to say Ba was actively seeking a move other than conjecture and opinions he just allowed his agents to do what they are employed to do which every player does, its why they have them (and he had a release clause so it went very public)

Cabs came for the money/league, Mbwia came for the league, Sissoko came for both, HBA came because we wanted him and he hated where he was (and money lets face it), Marv came because he couldnt agree with Liverpool, Cisse came for money/league none of them came because they loved NUFC…hell how much did Shearer get paid to play for us and he adores the club

If NUFC stop paying them and we drop down a division how many of them would still be here?

Theres very few heroes in football anymore mate sorry its a job not a love affiar

I have no problem with Perch starting either.
He keeps it simple, tackles hard.

I’d drop Jonas. Give him a rest. Bring him on to fall over and win some free kicks in the last 10 minutes.

  • 46 Transfer Sage // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:27 AM

    prodigy

Santon didn’t need to be babysat that much when he was playing in italy.

What he needs to do is be given some responsibility. He has the safety net of jonas, he needs to be told to sit back and time his runs better.

  • 47 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:28 AM

For me Perch is good in our old fashioned English football game.

When it comes to a continental style, Perch often goes missing due to the movement of the opposition.

One thing about us is that we never ever control games throughout the 90 minutes with the obvious quality we have (which for me is a tactical fault with Pardew).

With Anita, Cabaye and Sissoko we have 3 players who should be able to dominate any midfield for long periods of the game. It is now vital to dictate tempo, keep the ball and play good football. That is the way out of trouble. Resorting to long ball football and using Perchinho to stop a threat rather than cause one is going to get us closer to relegation.

Pardew has to be brave. No more defensiveness, no more sitting back on a 1-0, no more odd choices in formation and personnel. He must look to attack teams and kill them off.

1st half against Villa and Reading are examples of how to play decent football but both times we weren’t out of sight. We need to correct this or sustain the quality over 90 minutes.

Our future is in Pardews hands. I’m not confident but I will support him till the end of the season. If he finds his balls we can pull away and be relaxed by the middle of March, if we are dragged into a fight then I am seriously worried looking at the final 15 games.

  • 53 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:33 AM

I think that will come with experience transfer. The more he plays.

He has came on heaps and bounds this season and its no coincidence why that is. Jonas has his back. His forward play has come on alot. He’s actually i better dribbler than Jonas i feel.

I would try them both out in europa santon and marv. See how they get on. If it isnt good bring jonas off the bench.

I feel the games are a little bit risky at the moment with our league position to be trying it.

  • 54 BelfastMagpie // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:34 AM

I would play Jonas at left back, and push Santon further forward. He certainly wont be dropped, seems to be one of the first names on the Pardews team sheet every week.

Ed, is there some news about Hatem ?, best player of newcastle!!

  • 56 rainrix // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:39 AM

People usually say jonas helps the LB out defensively i would have agreed in the past 2 seasons but this season i dont think his defensive abilities have even been up to scratch.

The left side has been our weakest defensively regardless of jonas playing or not. Hell against villa we were exposed. You’d expect when santon pushes on jonas would drop back but he doesn’t even seem to do that it nearly cost us a goal against villa, only a poor touch and krul saved us a goal.

The only time jonas helps is during slow opposition build up play when he can double up but i dont think its worth keeping him in the team purely for that

  • 57 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:40 AM

    WWYCD

If Chelsea came in for any of our players (again other than Benny maybe) they would consider a lot more factor s than Ba.

Yes there is nothing to suggest Ba actively sought a move, but he didn’t hardly ever commit to staying.

If he had any respect for the club he would have left after the season finished once we were either relegated or away from trouble.

Clubs would have been lining up to take him in the Summer as much as now.

Most players would leave to enhance their chances of winning medals and the money would be a bonus, others will leave for the money only.

Do you think Ba cares if Chelsea win diddly squat?

I’m not saying I’m going to boo Ba, but in the same respect I won’t applaud him or wish him well.

As I said it was convenient for both him and us and we owe each other nothing. I would treat every player individually and if Ben Arfa does the same in the Summer, and returned to us at some point, I wouldn’t applaud him either.

Football is dying due to these types of players, but it does seem to me that NUFC are trying to sign loyal players, religious and family orientated professionals to give us short term success in return for good wages and a platform for future moves to bigger clubs.

The difference between Ba and the rest of the team is that they care about this season and the club itself. I honestly believe that. I truly think they are here and wan’t to give us success. Ba wanted to be loved and take home as much money as he could. Selfish, arrogant and greedy.

  • 58 yorkshire_magpie // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:41 AM

Don’t know why your slagging pardew for saying that about graham.

Fcuk graham. Especially after that hilarious interview which I think I seen about 50 times yesterday.

He probably won’t start against us anyway. Think pardew was just having a dig. Some boll-cks talked in that interview

  • 60 fray bentos // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:44 AM

    @Beattie

I reckon Ba will have left for the money AND the higher chances of winning trophies, just like any other footballer, everybody sportman would want something to show for their career

Some fans have to stop this stupid negativity towards Ba, he’s just enough example of footballers today, he’s nothing special, he left to a bigger club and for more money and most other foreign players in the premiership are exactly the same

  • 61 Jail for Ashley // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:44 AM

I think ur judging Ba harshly because of the press when another of ours goes it’ll be for the same reasons as Ba went

Does Ba care if Chelsea win nothing? I dont know, probably medals are good to have but money for ur family and stability for the rest of ur life is surely more important to any man

I wont cheer Ba on to the pitch but I will clap him off for what he did for us on the pitch during his time here, I dont hold grudges against old players unless they go all out to disrespect our club

  • 63 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:46 AM

    Fray Bentos

Not being negative, just being honest.

I won’t boo him or hate him for leaving us. I just think that not all players are cut from the same cloth and Ba’s cloth was designed for the highest bidder.

Funny how everyone nearly picks a different team lol

    Here’s my shot

Only change for me would be marv for guti. Think perch does a good job. Never really seen Anita have a good game at dcm. Think he actually played his bets stuff for us when he was in the more advanced role when cabs was injured

Can’t really see him as dcm if I’m honest with you

  • 65 Transfer Sage // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:47 AM

I just think playing a winger to do a defensive role is wrong…not too bad if we play 442 to have somebody who does a shift out wide but even still the wide man needs to bring quality going forward which jonas has failed to do this year.

I just think the top teams dont do it and we now have a top side, not man utd/city level but our midfield of sissoko, anita and cabaye would rival most in the league.

Jonas being so defensive and not attacking much means the opposition fullback has a license to get forward as he knows he wont be punished by leaving his position.

More effective to pin their fullback deep in his own half with an attacking winger and force then winger back by using santon to help attack.

Defending by attacking is much more effective as you have a chance to score and opposition struggle to score.

By just sitting back we invite pressure and best you can hope for then is to not concede.

i see where pards is coming from as i think we all know with the team we have now we need a better class of striker than graham “however” he’s still better than our 3rd choice striker and would have greatly improved our team at this moment in time and maybe would have been forth choice come the summer which i doubt he would have been happy with.

  • 67 Pardews Parsnip Bonce // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:47 AM

perch has very quickly developed into one of our most consistent players. granted he’s not exactly a brilliant ball playing midfielder but nor is tiote. in fact, imy personal thought is that both on their best form tiote is a better dm but perch is less of a liability (dodgy tackles and losing the ball wise).

  • 68 rainrix // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Beattie… I think you have it spot on about ba. We knew we were signing a mercenary and we got our moneys worth at the end of the day. No one was surprised when he left. He doesn’t deserve to be booed any more than he deserves our to be cheered. Indifference would be the best policy :)

  • 69 fray bentos // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:49 AM

I agree about perch being consistent especially in the dcm role. At this moment I think he is a better option against the more physical teams

  • 72 croftus5678 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:53 AM

    @65

i could not agree more it scares the hell outa me that we have a winger who goes back rather than forward never seen it before and never want to see it again.

he will be great if we are pushed back to the wall as a sub to take the pressure off but no assists for a winger is just abismal.

i do not know what happened to him but he changed very fast from the man he was (maybe it was maradona playing him lb confused the lad and he never got over it.

  • 73 Pardews Parsnip Bonce // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:53 AM

  • 74 Transfer Sage // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:54 AM

    beattie

I am kind of with you on this issue.

I dont care if ba left for medal, money or a combination of the two, thats irrelevant to me as at the end of the days its his job and his life.

What annoyed me was last year he did a good job for the team on the left, sulked and spat his dummy out as he stopped scoring and interest in him died in the summer window.

He asked for a central role (fine its his position) or else he would leave, he got his central role, got his goals and then left us straight away. He clearly wanted that role to benefit himself not benefit the team.

You ever see rooney complain when he has to play centre mid or out left/right…no he just gets on with it.

Gouff said he likes a central role but will play where asked. It’s about being professional and seeing whats best for the team not yourself.

cant really moan about ba gutted he left but it was risk reward with him when we sighned him with he dodgy knee do we risk putting a player on 50 grand a week on 4 year deal when his knee could go at any time we had to have insurence on him and im sure thats why he had the buy out clause put in his contract he more than done his job upfront bigger club came in for him more wages mayby going to be his last big contract cant really blame the guy and we still made 7.5 million on him in the end. but i think MA and AP will learn from this to get things like this sorted in the summer before season starts

  • 76 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 11:56 AM

And what would you consider disrespect?

As far as I’m aware he did disrespect our club with his statements after his move.

He was here 18 months and didn’t do anything different to any other player.

We didn’t win anything with him, he scored a few goals and worked hard, as all players should.

I’m not talking about hating him for what he did, I am talking about liking him for what he did.

He is no different in my eyes to anyone else that came here for money and left for money.

Ba came from a relegated team that he walked away from after months and he chose NUFC as it was the best offer. He has had 6 teams in his career and has in the past shown the truth of his character by going on strike at Hoffenheim and moving to England without permission.

The only other player similar in our squad is Ben Arfa.

    Krul – Adopted Gerodie
    Debuchy – 1 club man
M’bwia – Didn’t jump at the first opportunity
Colo – Stayed after relegation and wanted to go home
Santon – Moved away from Inter to play football.
    Cabaye – 1 club man

    etc….

All I am saying is that not everyone is like Demba. would the all move if Chelsea came in? Probably, but it would be with a heavier heart and a touch more gratitude.

He’s gone to a better team for more money; why wouldn’t he leave?

  • 81 JackButler // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:03 PM

If Pardew starts with Jonas and leaves Marveuax on the bench then he needs a slap

  • 82 croftus5678 // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:05 PM

for me tiote (not forgetting the player he was before the ref’s started picking on him) was the best dm in the business but unfortunatly now everyone is out to get him hence he has become a liability and we give away a lot less with perch with a hell of a lot less risk.

perch vs anita is another good contest as perch better tackler and more physical but anota for me is a lot better all rounder and more consistant.

hell of a lot of good options now but i think personally our best mid is anita and sissoko with cabaye as both anita and sissoko can break things up and are no slouches so 2 of them should be more than enough to stop anything as well giving us a lot more options in the forward department which i think we will need.

  • 83 spitfire_ // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:05 PM

your missing my point with Ba.

I dont mind the move to chelsea, more money, more medals…simple move really.

The issue is he kicked up a fuss being on the left even though it benefited the team, he got his central role he demanded (threatened to leave) and then left anyway.

Total lack of respect to Pardew and his team mates.

  • 85 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:07 PM

I am not going to boo Ba myself, just won’t applaud him.

  • 86 Carryingcoals // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:09 PM

    Beattie

I can see the point you’re making about player characters and I think hat’s reflected in the team ethos we are building.

Your point about not all players being the same as Ba doesn’t go unheard, I think you’re right.

Granted most players would leave for bigger bucks but what seems crucial in our player recruitment process is the character of the player. – Maybe we won’t get it right 100% of the time but it’s a factor we’ve considered.

Not every player is the same.

  • 87 JackButler // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:10 PM

    Transfer Sage

The fact that Ba kicked up a fuss is one thing, but the major issue was the fact that Pardew caved into him and changed that winning formation

  • 88 NUFC FOR SALE // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:12 PM

Why is booing Ba even up for debate????

Ofcourse hes going to get booed.

We do the same to every player that comes back.

Sir Lesley Ferdinand used to get cheered in the warm up and then booed every time he touched the ball.

Ba deserves to get booed. He’s a mercenary and he dropped Newcastle when we needed him most so i’ll boo him to the rafters.

Well yes Pardew was the one who made that bad decision and persisted with it for 20 or so games.

no shock we played better in europe without Ba and in a 433 system.

I think Ba did pray on that weakness in the manager though so not happy with him. I wont boo him as I couldn’t care less what he does now. Not bothered if he retires tomorrow or wins back to back league titles.

  • 91 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:13 PM

    Sage

you have got it spot on.

During his time here he wanted to put himself in the window by scoring goals, the only way he could do this was by playing central.

It is the clubs fault for caving in and allowing this and not Ba’s fault in the any way, shape or form.

However that kind of attitude is not inherent in the team we have, not everyone want’s to be an individual. Players are best put in the shop window by playing in a winning team.

Ba couldn’t see past the scoring aspect of his own game. He just wanted to score for us and move on. That is the case for a few players in most of the clubs outside the top 4. Ba did nothing special worthy of our undying support.

He is just another opponent playing for a rival and not deserving of any special praise ir abuse.

  • 92 Carryingcoals // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:14 PM

Whilst Ba refusing to go left again really, really damaged our team and system – what else could Pardew do?

He wasnt backed in the summer, knew Demba would score through the middle and basically had to concede.

    Pragmatism over idealism.

I want to forget about Ba, we sent so much time in the build up to January speculating over him.

Cisse is the future and will eventually flourish through the middle once more. I’d have preferred to lose Ba than say HBA or Cabaye or Colo for that matter in this window.

  • 93 rainrix // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:14 PM

  • 96 croftus5678 // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:15 PM

i could be wrong but marv plays all his best football in a more central position and i dont think he likes it on the wing as he tries to get inbetween players rather than take them on the outside ! and although i think he would be a hell of a lot more effective than jonas there i still think it would be a ba situation in making a player look bad and making him less insperational in an uncomfortable position for him..

if anything marv should be in the forward 3 and able to drift out wide and come in central if needed as he would be most effective there if not in cm.

  • 97 JackButler // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:16 PM

    Transfer Sage

It may be small minded of me but if a player doesn’t wear our shirt I simply don’t care what he does. Ba left for the money and is now sitting on the bench because Roman is desperate for his 50 million man to work, which it isn’t.
The move has forced Pardew to play Cisse through the middle which will see him return to form

Pettiness aside – what I would say was really evident when watching Demba play was how little he put Cisse in on goal. He wasn’t a team player. I think we will benefit now without him, despite him scoring the majority of our goals.

If anything it’s just good that the whole saga is over!

  • 100 JackButler // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:20 PM

Pardew had to be stronger, you simply can’t have players dictating where they play, especially when it’s at the expense of the whole team. Cisse scoring record from January till may proved that that system worked very, very well for us but Pardew cabed at we paid the price

Everything about that statement is true, but it did not needed to be said.

  • 110 innoculator // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:32 PM

Re the ‘Gutierrez starting’ problem, it must be said that he does not deserve that spot ahead of the alternatives. The bare minimum that a player must give to the team is the ability to control the ball and pass it on to a teammate. Ideally they can do more than that, beating players, shooting etc, however Jonas just can’t do it anymore. People were praising his work rate and interceptions back in our area against Villa, but the fact is that, if a player capable of keeping the ball had been on in his place, we would not have been in those situations. Jonas miscontrolled and lost the ball at least 4/5 times, and his passing was woeful. I still love the guy, but starting him is killing this team.

  • 112 ToonDownSouth // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:33 PM

There were less offsides because players were finally looking to play him in quickly – the situation prior to his goal has been happening all season, but the through ball just doesn’t come quickly enough.

Although he does get caught offside a lot in really needless situations as well, like from direct balls.

  • 113 Beattie25 // Feb 1, 2013 at 12:35 PM

Marveaux can’t play wide, I agree. But that could be a gift rather than a curse.

Look at Chelsea, Arsenal and City. The have no wide men in reality. They have creative players that float out wide but move centrally to suit their style.

Hopefully we will see Marv, Sissoko and HBA as a forward 3 man midfield supporting Cisse with the full backs providing width. Marv and Benny can float out but they’d have much more impact coming inside and causing havoc against CB’s and DM midfielders.

I have to be honest, I really like Cabaye in a deep lying position actually – that is, as long as we’re not being overrun, since then he’s slightly wasted doing the donkey work.

I hope that MA/DL have learnt their lessons from the last window. IMO the work is still not quite complete but a repeat of this window in the summer for the right positions then we really could be firing.
I find it amazing that the press have been reluctant to sing our praises for what has been very astute business on a good budget. I do not think however MA can do that for the remaining key positions…..namely 2 ST and a Winger will be the most expensive acquisitions in the summer followed by another CB and RB and then we’re done. We could have a very settled team then arguably for many seasons. I would like the board to immediately start to negotiate with HBA to extend his contract starting now but that’s just my opinion.

Agree MYM is best placed in his role as a CB, but here me out as to the madness of my logic of lack thereof. I thought Perch had a good game against Villa, but Chelsea has a lot more pace in their midfield. MYM is arguably quicker and his distribution and ability to dribble on the ball could be a welcome relief. That with Sissoko alongside at times to assist (no language barrier either). Ideally I would have Tiote & Sissoko there with Cabaye further up the field. Anita would also be a good choice though…..

  • 150 ichrisho // Feb 1, 2013 at 1:26 PM

Might as well play MYM as DM seeing as ardew plays most of his players out of position…

  • 151 VanToonMan // Feb 1, 2013 at 1:26 PM

Do you guys remember last year? Raylor got raped down that left hand side by Sturridge who missed chance after chance. Anyway…I think Perch is a MUST in the team lineup for tomorrow – unless Anita can do the job but i don’t think he can break the play up as well. If Sissoko gets tired later on Anita can come on for him.

    My team for tomorrow:

    —————————Krul————————————

    —-Debuchy——-Taylor————Colo——Santon——

    ———————Perch————–Sissoko—————–

    —————————-Cabaye——————————–

    ——-Gouffran———–Cisse——————-Marveaux——-

Totally undecided on if Cabaye or Sissoko should swap though. Can’t make my mind up after Sissoko did well behind Cisse against Villa

    Thoughts guys?

  • 152 Ultra Mag-ness // Feb 1, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Don’t see why anyone would “boo” Ba if I’m honest. Yes he left – but look where he left us – at the end of the season if we have risen by quite a few places because of the new players we’ve got (partly because he left) then I’ll be happy he went.

If we boo players for leaving (especially for more successful teams) they will justify their decision to go because they will think we’re ungrateful for their contribution when they were here and other players here may think that we might not appreciate them.

We need to ignore Ba and cheer on the current crop of players we have and not get on their backs and if any more were to go wish them well, move on and cheer their replacement – we need to support Newcastle United and not specific players and be that 12th man we are famous for

On this article…Great to see Marv return so quickly, however, doesn’t he know that’s not how Newcastle players do injuries? The kid has lots to learn :)

My questions on him starting against Chelsea would be whether he is actually 100% fit and whether it is actually worth risking him? Maybe a sub appearance would be best? Guesswork from here.

Not sure we need the same as in the Villa game, Hazard is out so no need to be over physical ( :) ha ha), joking aside though, we need to play our game imo and get our technical players out there.

I can see the same defense starting tbh. Here’s what I’d go for:

    —————–Krul—————-
    Debuchy–Taylor-Colo–Santon
    ———-Anita—Guti——–
    —Gouff—Cabaye—Sisokko—-
    —————-Cisse—————

Lots of flexibility with those 5 midfield players, in theory they can all do a job and move as required.

If Marv is in good shape, I’d personally take Guti out and swap with Sissoko.

  • 169 JP...from The Rock // Feb 1, 2013 at 1:43 PM

Excellent news!! He HAS TO replace Gutierrez who was shocking against Villa. I watched the game again and Gutierrez looks worse than a championship player. The only good thing he did in the whole match was that block near he death- That was it! All game he was extremely off woeful. Teammates would pass him the ball a yard away from his feet and he would miss the ball and let it roll for a throw in. He did that more than 3 times during the match and that is simply not good enough. The his passing was non-existent as was his dribbling. We should sell him in the summer with no qualms whatsoever.

Gutierrez thanks for your lung busting games in the past but son you’ve lost the plot. YOU NEED TO BE REPLACED ASAP.

The amount of times his lack of skill let us down was incredible. If Marveaux is benched in favour of Gutierrez I am going to have a fit!

Gutierrez was so bad and has been for most of the season, that he should not be anywhere near the first eleven these days. Should be sold in the summer, no question about it.

I think behind cisse he played his best games for us last season.

Stoke at home being the pinnacle. showing his vision and goal scoring ability.

But equally I think you have anita/ tiote sit deeper then have either sissoko or cabaye next to him with the other in CAM role.

They can then interchange as they see fit.

  • 191 rainrix // Feb 1, 2013 at 2:12 PM

    @Spahndirge

Against villa i don’t think cabs was actually in the advanced midfield role, that was sissoko which by the ways looks to be where we want to keep playing him.

Cabs was in the classic CM position and its what got him his goal.

As for him playing deep lying i’d prefer him further up so he can play defence splitting short passes. I do like the idea of a deep lying playmaker ever since watching pirlo in the euros. Ideally our holding midfielder could double unfortunately anita tiote and perch simply don’t have that passing ability.

Yeah, I partially agree with that.

I think Chelsea can be upset to easily by a pressing game. Without allowing the Cb’s time on the ball to play the ball forward to the midfield we can really effect their game. I watched Everton to do it a few games ago very effectively for about 30-40 mins although then Chelsea started passing it around…

  • 204 remember69 // Feb 1, 2013 at 5:48 PM

The good news is that now Pardew has players on the bench that can switch the game up if things are not working. In the past he did not have that option.
I think we have to be careful picking players and think of both defense AND offense. Marveaux does offer a lot going forward but does he help defense as much as Guti?
Not that I’m promoting defene at all costs but we need to stop Chelski sending their backs up the field and outnumbering Santon & Debuchy.
This is where a manager earns his cash, not by putting out a team of his ‘best’ players but applying tactical nous to outplay the opposition and fine tuning to get teh best possible result.
It’s easy for us armchair managers to judge, but do we really feel we can do better than a guy that has spent years in the job (ie a pro), is deemed worthy of a big payday, and was voted as manager of the year by OTHER MANAGERS last season?

  • 205 remember69 // Feb 1, 2013 at 5:58 PM

    Sage,
    “4-2-2-2

let width come from the full backs and allow gouff to roam around a bit either side”

I have be more than concerned with the FB’s being isolated and would leave us terribly exposed down the flanks if they are caught upfield.
Chelski have the ability in their midfield to probe the space behind them as it is (especially with the Chelski FB’s marauding).
I would go 4-4-2 or some sytem close (4-1-3-1?)and ensure we have someone helping out wide to limit spaceon the flanks/crosses for Ba.

    Thoughts?

  • 206 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Feb 2, 2013 at 9:07 AM

If Marvaux is Fit then he would be in the starting eleven ! Probably in place of Jonas !

If we are going to stand any chance at all against Chelski, then we don,t need to let them get settled on the ball and start passing it around? I feel that there is too much importance being put on BA,s return to St James since he left!
If we cut out any service to him and just stop him getting the ball we will be okay!
