The Man Behind The French Signings – Graham Carr

10:36 am, Sunday, February 3rd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 48 Comments

It seems that Newcastle’s Chief Scout 68 year-old Graham Carr – who spends a lot of his time looking for talent in the French leagues – has added some gems to the players he has uncovered for Newcastle since he signed on in February of 2010 as the Chief Scout on Tyneside.

moussa sissoko scored winning gioal

Moussa Sissoko scores winner yesterday – after great play from number 3 – Santon

Graham has been responsible for getting players like Cheick Tiote, Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and all five Frenchmen that arrived in the week following our surrender to reading a short two weeks ago.

Not surprisingly Newcastle’s capture of five top Frenchman from Ligue One is capturing the headlines in France – and Graham was interviewed by the popular French Daily L’Equipe last week:

“Will I go on signing players from France? Yes, because I love France and the French players.” “We sign them because we had a lot of success working with Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye.”

“They are really good players very professional, which is essential these days.” “They are clever, they understand quickly what we want and they have a very interesting tactical culture, and that is because French education is excellent, really.”

It could be that Moussa Sissoko becomes one of his best signings ever – if this lad is as good as he has looked in the last couple of games for the Magpies.

And Newcastle had a French Day on Thursday at the Benton Training grounds – and there was soupe a l’oignon, canard, coquille saint jacques, selection de fromages on the menu (that’s onion soup, duck, shell saint jacques and a  selection of cheeses) – and French flags draped around the cafeteria.

It seems we will be having a lot more of these French Days at Newcastle – after the form of some of our French players recently – who seem to blossom on Tyneside.

But we shouldn’t forget the sterling work being done by Graham Carr and his scouting staff behind the scenes – who are always in the background scouting players for the team – and we’d love to see his latest list of players he is watching. 😀

  • 2 toonbrother // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:37 AM

Pardew took credit for sissoko yesterday

  • 3 toonbrother // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:40 AM

i think we musnt get too carried away with Sissoko he has never been a prolific goalscorer. He only scored 2 goals last season for toulouse

  • 4 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:41 AM

    In regards to Ba,

He was pretty disrespectful to the club and the fans. He comstantly missled us.

I think thats the reason for the boo’s. He showed no class during his time here and he got it in return when he came back. Quite deserved I thought. It was always coming.

While im sure everyone will thank him for the goals, we geordies don’t like seeing our club treated in such a manner.

(Repost) Too much talk about Colo’s challenge, Ramires etc – not just on here. David (sh*t-Collocini) Luiz should have got a red last season – what goes around comes around. Let’s just focus on the sheer quality of football we played against the team 3rd in the table who have top players in their side, a £50 million striker as a sub etc. This wasn’t a “let’s clog the stars and throw them off their stride” performance, there was some real classy play out there – and from players just getting to know each other’s play.
As for Sissoko, what surprised me was his stamina; not only did he last till a (tactical) substitution at 90 minutes, he actually produced some of his strongest runs in the last quarter of the game. I’m sure he can’t produce performances like that all game every game but I’m drooling at the thought of watching Benny “The glide” and Moussa ‘The power” on the same pitch!

If your so gutted that Collo wasn’t red carded and a penalty awarded why don’t you write to the FA and ask them to look at it again, if you persist you could maybe get him a three match ban, that might make up for it.

toonbrother…It’s not just the goals mate, his commitment in the two games so far has been superb.

  • 8 roe997 // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:43 AM

Sissoko was played alot deeper at toulouse.they had capoue and tabanue the creative midfielders.

Repost – Dont think we will go down anymore 🙂

Best football for a long long time, miles better than anything that was served up last year. The intent to play in the right way from the first whistle, Perchy and Cabaye being superb in the first 15minutes was just a joy to behold. I Credit Pardew for this.

I will give credit when credit is due, do i want Marv to play next game for Jonas, Yep, however i could understand why Jonas played yesterday, once we setup, basically had a brief to stop Ashley Cole, fair idea, the notion that he now needs to babaysit Santon is rubbish as Goofy can play that side, down our left now is going to be great.

From Krul to Cisse everybody put a shift in, and the idea of playing Sissoko just in front of a midfield two is inspired, well done Parsnip, you might make a manager of the Toon yet.

Best performance and Game in years

  • 12 toonfield // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:45 AM

i think theres a lot more goals in sissoko than you think,
pardew is going to be pushing him forward as much as he can, he has a lot of confidence in his play

  • 13 Jail for Ashley // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:45 AM

    Toon Prodigy,
Yesterday I said I would neither boo or applaud Demba Ba hut in my heart I knew that wasn’t true, just trying to be diplomatic, he deserved everything he got yesterday and yes Jesper the broken nose.

  • 14 tequilamag // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:46 AM

Jesp look at the positives, we played well for the full 90 mins not just one half. Enjoy the moment dude.

  • 15 shearermania // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:47 AM

i thought santon was great last night…i know he has positional issues especially defending but i thought it was maybe his best game and he was so unlucky not to score with that volley….
i accept when you have a gungho full back raging forward like cafu or alves youll leave big spaces wide open in the back but thats what i like…attack, attack, attack

  • 16 Rotonda heights // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:47 AM

    Ben Arfa
Moyo – is he still here?

  • 17 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:48 AM

JFA…why don’t you act like a big boy and stand by your conviction – I have told you I stand by mine!

…what’s wrong with you at times????

  • 18 check the toastie // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:48 AM

Gotta say thought Jonas even looked a yard quicker yesterday, had a decent game for him. He is usch an honest player was over the moon when he scored, bizarrely the way Pardew thinks that goal might get him ‘rested’. I imagine he will be in front of Debuchy at Spurs to try and contain Bale. Suppose its not the worst idea in the world.

Personally would maybe let Anita play in front of Debuchy against Spurs, lad needs a game, deserves it in fact. Perchy was great yesterday mind you. Suppose its good to have options eh.

  • 19 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:49 AM

Tequila…I enjoyed the game mate 🙂 No need to worry!

…my comment wasn’t about my enjoyment or lack there of – it was about something different.

  • 20 Jail for Ashley // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:49 AM

Well what is he trying to say, please enlighten me with your diplomacy.

  • 21 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:49 AM

While I wouldn’t wish injury on anyone, I did have a sly grin while i knew that was game over for him. After all, we our very aware of his talents infront of goal.

  • 22 wolfshead@toon // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:49 AM

he has scouted great players it will never happen but it would be great if he could he get pirlo in haha i would love to see him play alongside cabs )

  • 23 Dannyo // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:49 AM

Pardew didn’t take cred for the Sissoko signing.
If you’ve watched the whole interview, he said Carr told him of a player in France he had to have a look at.

  • 24 shearermania // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:50 AM

jonas looked better after the goal…you could see how much it meant to him…hes been out of form all season, still cant cross but what a goal and what a celebration…thats why we will be all right cause we got players who cares…

  • 25 veto // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:50 AM

lets be honest ! , we are targeting players who have incredible reputations , just not in england ,
im not one for pointing out youtube clips or video games , but the likes of barfa , santon , sissoko have been some of my first targets in football manager since as far back as 2008 .
carr is doing an amazing job , but the story keeps getting ran like we are picking up these people from out of know where .

what has been amazing is the work thats went into getting these players to come here , it sounds like we go in super prepared , and also we can offer players as much exposure as a top 4 team due to the amount of press coverage we seem to generate .
i still think we are being sold to them as a perfect gateway to a top champions league team with their next contracts , which is fine as long as we never sell more than one big name per season and always reinvest the money earned .
it should be pretty straightforward to get the same amount of value from other leagues also , german one is ripe for the picking for us and i think we should start looking at the bundesliga more now also .

    40yorkymag // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:48 AM

And now your going to believe us
Just how good Sissoko is ,he never once wasted the ball seems to wonder around at walking pace and injected pace to die for ,his goals were great but when he left Ashley cole for dead you could feel the crowd take a massive gasp wow
Great players always have time he had time every time he got the ball
I described him as the new Viera he is better on yesterday’s performance
It was worth the price of my season ticket just for yesterday
    Thank you mr Carr

  • 27 Rotonda heights // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:51 AM

What was so refreshingly different yesterday was that we tried to win the game over 90 mins, not 45!

We should always play that way.

Lose the fear and let the opposition worry about us.

With the likes of Benny, Cabs, Sissoko et al, teams should be worried about us now.

  • 28 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:51 AM

JFA…you not what I am saying or what I was asking. I asked a question a few threads back!

…your answer was YES! Don’t beat around the bush mate!

  • 29 tequilamag // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Gouffran for me really stood out yesterday, Seems very intelligent in his decision making. Much as I have supported Jonas ( and the icing on the cake was him scoring yesterday) when HBA is back Jonas should be benched.

  • 30 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:52 AM

    *not = know

  • 31 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:53 AM

Jail…All I think is he is saying is it’s not right to justify one challenge simply by saying “well they got away with one too”.

I don’t think he’s actually passing judgement on the Colo incident at all, just the fact that some, I believe last night, we’re putting it as simply as that.

I actually don’t know, as I haven’t seen him say, whether he thought the Colo challenge was a red or not.

I just think wires are being crossed.

But hey, what do I know?

We got 3 points off Chelsea!!!

Right then, seems fun is at a low on here for some reason, I’m going to go and enjoy a nice cafe con leche in the sun.

    Catch you all later

  • 32 Jail for Ashley // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:53 AM

What do you mean, I am standing by my coniction that I think Demba Ba got exactly what I think he deserved yesterday and that I don’t agree that foul play should be part of the game it happens, but as WW… points out not everybody sees it even as dangerous, just a poor clearance, to keep harping on about it makes it sound like you would have liked to have seen him sent off.

  • 33 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 3, 2013 at 10:54 AM

Im sorry mate but i havent misread anything, you said you could easily find a post where i justified the challenge, i suggest you do that because atm your not making much sense, so aye find my post where i say its okay for jonas to break ba’s face cos ramires didnt walk and i might see where your coming from
Also see check the toastie has had the decency to give credit where credits due …………hint hint

This is Christmas last year all over again!

…Guess this is my cue – take care! (not going to part of this again)

  • 37 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM

But no one is saying that, thats why i havent a clue what jesp is on about! All ive said us i can see why the ref didnt give a pen or a red and why didnt MOTD show both incidents, thats not justifying, thats not comparing the 2 thats simply saying if you show one contriversial moment you have to show the other
For me the luckiest man not to walk was cisse tbh!

Goofy has been do impressive in his 2 games here great pace great strength he’s great with the ball at his feet and the boy has some skill

  • 38 check the toastie // Feb 3, 2013 at 11:01 AM

After we equalised the atmosphere was superb and unbelievably some people were leaving on 85/86 minutes, i mean in a game like that, trying to beat the traffic, amazing, there was plenty their 10 minutes after the whistle as Cabaye, Goofy and Sissoko did a lap of honour getting clapped by the crowd, Perchy, Saylor Timmy and Santon all stayed on the pitch for some time getting the applause of the crowd, it was just superb.

No better place to play football, this club could be on the cusp of something big, please Big Mike keep that investment going on we may break our trophy hoodoo. If Cisse was on form we could have beat them by 4 yesterday, that is some team we now have.

Special mention for Saylor, for me he is more important than Collo, and if Mbiwa does start it is the skipper who should make way.

Jail – you enjoy the mental corner, looked good fun, love Cabs and Santon always clapping the fans. Super world class players we have. Hope Pardew keeps the aggressive tactics and positive teams. Still would like to see Marv for Jonas, the boy is a special player.

  • 39 beddersmag // Feb 3, 2013 at 11:02 AM

ToonbrotherCheers for the back up on santon. Dont get me wrong i rate him and should come good just sometims i think people are blinded by his attacking play and miss him failing at what hes really there for. On sissoko, my mate says he has seen a lot of him and never plays that far forward so we might can expect a few more goals? and credit to pards for deploying him in that role when conventional wisdom would have suggested it should be

  • 40 Jail for Ashley // Feb 3, 2013 at 11:02 AM

It is very easy to get wires crossed if you havent read previous posts, I have apologized so we’ll leave it at that, on yesterday, who managed to slag off Pards for something and have we seen Catchy since our back to back wins, he must be gutted.

I’m pretty sure Capoue was the deep-lying midfielder at Toulouse, with two CM’s (including Sissoko) in front of him.

    Bedders mag
Simply brilliant ,when reflecting on the game it was not just the performance but against the quality opposition it was special
I have not seen sjp jump like that for many years
We should have been 3 nil up at half time ,Chelsea had 20 mins when pardew dragged Sissoko deeper ,he is still a tactical worry but not for now
Just looking forward to the rest of the season
I can’t imagine what benny is going to be like with Sissoko, debucey and cabaye slipping the ball into space for him .

    Allez le ville

  • 48 toonincheek // Feb 3, 2013 at 12:10 PM

    The Colo/Ba incident –
If that had happened anywhere else on the pitch, it would have been a foul for sure – maybe a yellow,
    red unlikely but not impossible.

BUT – when a defender is trying to clear a ball near his own goal-line, a bit more tolerance is allowed on how high his foot can be before it is deemed dangerous.
    Quite rightly, IMO.
