It was disappointing to lose another game today at White Hart Lane, but this Newcastle team is playing so much better with Cabaye back in and Gouffran and Sissoko playing well, and it seems that manager Alan Pardew was happy enough at the display, if not the result.
Alan Pardew – good performance but poor result
Newcastle played well today – but we should have come away with something from this game, and may have had a late equalizer from Shola Ameobi but the Spurs goalkeeper made a decent save – and it was really two lapses that gave Gareth Bale his two goals that did Newcastle in today.
This is what Alan Pardew said about the game:
“They started really fast, but after that we dug in and played some good stuff.” “It was an even game really other than after that second goal which opened it up.” “I was pleased with the performance but not the result. We should be all right now.”
Yoan Gouffran was taken off on a stretcher after ten minutes of the second half, and he has an injury to his shin – which we hope is not too bad.
This is what the Newcastle manager said about the injury:
“His shinbone looks sore. It’s fingers crossed.” “We don’t want to lose him, he’s only just come to the club.”
Bale was the difference between the sides today, and he was difficult to mark – and his speed was often too much for the Newcastle defense, and Alan admitted he ‘s hard to contain in this form:
“Well he’s difficult to contain. We tied him down in certain areas but he’s always going to get some freedom. He was electric.” “The first goal was class. We should have done better for the second.” “The first goal was class. We should have done better for the second.”
We think the first goal should have been much better defended by Newcastle, and the wall broke up quickly, and provided no barrier to Gareth Bale shooting on goal.

Comment #1I don’t think Pardew will think the goal was quite as class when he sees a replay of the pathetic wall. 😐

Comment #2I think a bit of context is needed.
Spurs away is a difficult away match for anyone.
Spurs hadn’t lost in 9 games prior to this game.
We were more than competent for 75 minutes.
Crucially for me we have progressed since Reading @ home.

Comment #3Lads, we played well but Bale made the difference, our strike is very poor. If we would had a good striker, it will have been another history

Like most Pardew haters, you flip flop with your demands of him.
So you wanted Sissoko further back to defend against Tottenham at their home ground? You know Sissoko tracks back already right? THAT would have given Spurs all the chances they needed.
Perch was excellent, and was subbed because he picked up a knock. Tiote did fine to hold possession under pressure once he came on.
Marv was also subbed due to Gouffran’s INJURY. And how is putting another attacking player on giving the other team “initative” in midfield? Marveaux has been one of our best players on the ball for the last 2 months.

Comment #5Nice to see a side with fight and determination in it, we may have lost but can hold our heads high as we gave everything and were undone by one player

Comment #6You’ve got to take your hat off to the first goal, to get the ball up and over like that is nothing short of ronaldo-esque, wall or no wall.
Hopeful news on goofy. Everything crossed!

Great free kick yes but it was never a bloody free kick in the first place. Not 1 yellow for Spurs today.

Agree – I’m totally amazed at how well the Toon play when they decide their own set up, ignore Pardew and just get on with it. They always seem to win when they do that and lose when they follow directions and his formations.
Don’t agree with you that man marking Bale is shutting stable door after he’s bolted as we had quite a debate on here earlier in the week abut that. I rate Anita and think he’s nippy enough with good anticipation and would have been ideal for that role. Size is irrelevant in man marking – you need guile.

Comment #10I accept everyone has an opinion, but the sheer blind hatred of pardew (and shola, and perch etc.) is nothing short of disgusting for a toon supported.
Short of a top striker, we have a top team now who can hold their own with most teams and gave spurs a run for their money today.
Hey man, I remember pre-relegation days when we didn’t even get a shot on goal.
If you’re a supporter, please support the team, including the manager and ALL the players. We know they’re not all world beaters, but they all try their best – the effort is plain to see.

Comment #11Spurs fighting for champion s league, at home with probably the current top performing pkayer in the league.
Context required, Southhampton at home next was always going to be more important.
In reflection, the teams is performing again and we should all look forward to a giid next match at SJP.
Hope Gouffran is precautionary

Comment #12I cannot recall Bale, when taking a free kick doing a “daisy cutter”. He always goes over the wall. I know that -so why did all the wall not jump.
Colo has been exposed a bit in the last two games and unfortunately old Shola should not be playing at this level.Strikers are needed . Owl Head had stated there would be cover for different positions – hopefully he does not forget in the summer. Even after this defeat the side has shown enough to dispel any fears of relegation.

Im gutted we didnt go for it today, we were second best in the middle and poor defending cost us. Marv is so good with the ball at his feet and we never got the ball to him and play to his strengths i would of brought obertan on for goofy we needed his pace for tracking back.

Comment #21Lads, quite simply we ran out of gas. For 60 minutes we looked great. Then we were scrappy. Cabaye had a dreadful second half and a sissoko went missing. Gouffran was our best player and his injury was crucial. With Cabaye and Sissoko, it had to be expected, 2 massive games then a full international against a top team. The next 2 weeks will see us gather ourselves for the last few months. The 2 CM boys were knackered at the whistle, we found it harder and harder to get forward as a team and as hard as he tried Papiss was isolated. But we were one mistake from a great draw.
Don’t get too down hearted; as the tiredness was the key factor. First half we were great.

yes i agree we have a good set up, the owner is doing better than we might have hoped, they do seem to learn from their mistakes, AP is not a bad manager even if not top class, and we have the makings of a phenomenal team.

Comment #23I think the midweek international matches made a diff. Sissoko, Cabs, santon playing full games.
Also our Bale equivalent , Ben arfa was missing.
All in all, not too down beat after the loss. Hoping Gouffran is ok. Although didnt understand the subs made by PArds. Losing our best performing player on the day made a big difference.
While Marveaux is better than Obertan, i think on a big pitch like this Obertan plays more like Gouffran than Marv, and while both have pace, obertan is more likely to exploit the space behind the defence and so better for the counter.
Also tiote for perch, and leaving jonas on for too long. Subs were all wrong and he took too long to make them after the 2nd goal.

Comment #25yo-yo please tell me you are kidding?
“I’m totally amazed at how well the Toon play when they decide their own set up, ignore Pardew and just get on with it”
So when the team plays badly, its all pardews fault. When the team plays well, its because they ignore everything the manager says and they do their own thing?

Agreed. I appreciate my criticism of people may be over the top sometimes, but when they’re so blinded by an insane hatred of a man, it’s difficult to hold in my anger.
We went 1-0 down after 5 minutes and when I checked the comments at half time, people had been giving it the “Pardew out” rubbish!

Comment #34Apart from some poor defending for both goals, I dont think anyone did anything wrong really, Pardew included (shock i know).
We were equal with them for most of the game in terms of quality, and had a real go at them.
Team was right, tactics were right. Onto the europa league now.
Even though I dont know much about this Metalist team, they are supposed to be decent. Hope we get a good result at home, take the pressure off the second leg.
