Local Teenager Coming Into Contention At Newcastle

11:25 am, Tuesday, February 12th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 296 Comments

We had noticed this morning that Adam Campbell was left out of Newcastle United’s squad for an Italian youth tournament – and that could be a clue that Adam will make the squad for the Europa League games coming up against Metalica Kharkiv on the next two Thursdays.

adam campbell at 17

Adam Campbell – could see some playing time on Thursday

Adam turned 18 on New Years Day and every time Alan Pardew talks about this lad, he says he’s been impressive in training – so why not give the North Shields born youngster a chance against Metallica?

We’ve also heard that Adam works his socks off in training, and that he is already a first rate professional dedicated to becoming a Newcastle first teamer.

And Adam’s already played in the Europa League once this season, when he made his debut in the game against Atromitos in August.

Campbell is highly-rated by Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, and he could be one of the Newcastle youngsters that comes through big time over the next year – we certainly hope so – and we need some youngsters coming through into the first team.

And if he does –  his pace and movement will offer Newcastle something different up front, and with the impressive Yoan Gouffran, we could have two pacy players up front for Newcastle next season.

The 5’7″ tall youngster, who wears the number 49 shirt,  has made just one senior appearance for Newcastle so far, but he could add to that in the next two games.

Comments welcome.

We ran this heart wrenching story yesterday on Eve Miller – and it’s  had a huge impact on me – so please help the 10 year-old if you possibly can – many thanks.

Give him a chance against metallica? Not sure what that would accomplish but by all means try it 🙂

  • 2 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:29 AM

Rainrix…If he did well he could then face AC/DC in the next round.

Personally I’m hoping for a Led Zeppelin final 🙂

  • 3 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:29 AM

    This lad should play IMO.
Btw Ed congrats on the news on ur health!

  • 4 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:31 AM

I don’t see Campbell starting the home game, maybe a sub appearance. More likely to get the nod for the away game if we have a lead in order to rest key strikers for the Sunday PL game.

  • 5 ~ Phoenix Warrior Perch~ // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:31 AM

If we have a good buffer of say… 3 goals? then perhaps play him in the second leg?

  • 6 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:32 AM

U mentioned scouts in Spain n Portugal. As for Siem I think RVW is a greater priority given the revelation of Sissoko as an attacking option and that Siem would act as cover for Sissoko but we have Marveaux….? Thoughts? Also I think that a winger could be our nxt priority. I’m still thinking Jermaine Lens…..

  • 7 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:32 AM

Torq… From previous thanks for enlightening me, all hail your infinite french football wisdom 🙂

Ibiza… Hopefully slash could present the winners medal, plus a giant gold top hat 😉

  • 8 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:33 AM

get him in for the 2nd leg….will be a top player….our brightest talent at the club by a country mil.e

  • 9 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:36 AM

If we get passed metallica we are playing AZ/MH….the russian tribute to AC/DC

  • 10 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:37 AM

    Rainrix…That would make sense 🙂

TS…I haven’t really seen much of him, but know his development squad stats are really impressive and he is highly rated by all at the club and those fans who have seen him. I’d imagine with his pace he would be perfect to make runs with our current midfield supplying the passes….sounds like exciting stuff.

  • 11 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:38 AM

TS @9…. I see, so not the original AC/DC? Shame 🙂

  • 12 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:39 AM

He reminds me a lot of a raw michael owen (maybe not quite his level though)…that mold of player though…before the injuries and becoming a full time horse trainer.

  • 13 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Ibiza… I could have done a better joke, sadly i know next to nothing about metal so i had to kop out. Sorry! 🙂

  • 14 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:42 AM

unfortunately not…same songs different people…watched from a distance you’d think it was AC/DC…well until you hear the russian accents

    “back in blackski,
    I hit the sackski”

    etc etc

    Don’t worry…I’ll let myself out.

  • 15 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:42 AM

Rainrix…The blog is yours to run as you see fit, who would I be to judge? No apologies needed, I just thank you for conversing with me at all…I am truly honoured.

TS….So basically you’re saying we need to keep AC away from horses. I hope he doesn’t shop at Tescos.

  • 16 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:44 AM

Sage… Highway to hellski? Is that even an AC/DC song? 🙂

Ibiza… Please you give me too little credit! You are a good subject though give yourself a pat on the back 😉

  • 17 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:44 AM

Exactly…..the last thing we need is AC/horsie

  • 18 Magickit // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:45 AM

    Anyone see the below link???

Cabaye is really a real model.

Cabaye is fantastic in this work. Every day, and since the beginning, he tells us what he does, wherever he goes. He is a role model. He watches over others. For us, it’s called ‘low maintenance’. With him, you do not need to worry about where he will hang out in the evening or where he will get drunk in a pub. Importantly, he inspires others.I tell you, he is an example. My wife even thinks I’m in love with him … (Laughter)”.

  • 19 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:45 AM

i dont see campbell starting but i think hes the one of few youngsters that will make it in the furture.
tavenerier isnt good enough for toon
fergie wont cut it at top level and im from northern ireland 🙁
i was glad to here sammy is injured for thursday as the boy is clueless, id have fergie over him anyday btw
Amalfitano is clearly not good enough when squidward is ahead of him in peaking order
so bigi and campbell is were i have high hopes for and obviously haidara

  • 20 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:46 AM

it certainly is…put my effort to shame…although this fake russian is easy to implement. ( i hope we beatski metalist in the gameski and win the europa leagueski)

  • 21 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:47 AM

    I agree with that assessment.

Our youngsters are that young anymore…they all around 20/21….the youngest are campbell and bigi and they are the best as wel.

  • 22 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:49 AM

TS…A decent try, but we are in the presence of Rainrix of Shola, so you need to raise your game a bit.

Rainrix…With which hand should I pat my back oh lord, my messiah, bringer of all things holy and wonderful?

  • 23 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Sage…. It certainly isski. Although don’t overdo it before the racist brigade comes for us 😐

Magickit…. I have the exact same problem with my wife (SWOOOOOON!!!)

  • 24 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:51 AM

If that’s racist my russian uncle doesn’t love vodka.

    It’s just harmless fun,.

  • 25 magpie6699 // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:51 AM

I think we should play a strong team on Thursday. We’re at home, it’s 10 days till our next PL game and we should want to progress in the Europa League. Conversely I would use much of the rest of our squad for the away leg which involves a long trip to the Ukraine and back, only 2-3 days before playing Southampton.

  • 26 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:51 AM

magickit…Great article. Really shows some people up to be the drama queens they really are. It wasn’t that long ago that people “knew” that Cabaye was unsettled and wanted out.

That would seem to be a load of tosh.

  • 27 sirtoongospel // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:52 AM

TS – from previous thread, I totally agree, play whoever is fit, and if they start to tire then take action. After 60 minutes at the weekend, everyone was screaming for Cheick, as Perchy was looking shot. If he had gone on then we wouldnt have llost the game.

They made changes and we didn’t react. But hopefully in the future he will see things quicker.

Really hope that Pardew sees sooner rather than later what his best team is.

No Jonas, no Perch, and some even feel that Mapou should be in for Colo straight away. Saylor is a warrior and Mapou has pace. Colo seems to have neither of those qualities just now. But with HBA to come back, we can go for the jugular with teams. Just hope Pards has the confidence in the team that we all do.

  • 28 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Ibiza…. Obtain a life-sized cut out of shola. Prop it against a wall and back into it repeatedly. That constitutes “patting”. Who said anything about hands? 🙂

  • 29 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:53 AM

6699…Did you just cut and paste my comment from the last thread? 🙂 Completely agree.

  • 30 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:53 AM

I would use a strong team in both games in all honesty.

I think that by having a midweek game we clearly disrupt the weekend league game preparation time through the week.

The best way to avoid this is to use the same team (3/4 changes) and then you aren’t preparing 2 different sides in one week.

  • 31 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Sage… Haha i know, but you know how some of these cretins are 😉

  • 32 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Rainrix….Obtain? Should I not have had one already? Not sure whether I should be embarrassed or not.

  • 33 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:55 AM

As i said before i’d rest santon and play haidara, santon could do with a rest unless he has god like lungs. Is simmo back (3 words i’d never though i’d say 🙂 ) If so i’d drop him in at RB or possibly anita.

  • 34 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:55 AM

I think that jonas will be out for HBA.

I just dont think marv or obertan are any better than jonas. Marv hasn’t played well wide for us, just central and obertan is brainless.

  • 35 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:57 AM

Simmo was recovering from a broken toe but going out clubbing and drowning his sorrows his move to wigan fell through.

So unprofessional and shouldn’t be seen again in a toon shirt.

  • 36 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:57 AM

More to the point, has Simmo been rescued from the side of Manchesters streets yet?

  • 37 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:58 AM

ibiza… Well i have just come to power, i cant execute everyone for not having shola cutouts just yet, substitute it for one of your many many cabaye ones 😉

  • 38 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 11:59 AM

Rainrix…I’m awaiting my new Cabaye cut out as all my old ones are…well…let’s just say not usable anymore. They really should be sturdier.

  • 39 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Sage… I actually agree but pards hasn’t said anything so i don’t think he’s been frozen out just yet. Might as well use all our resources. I’d happily play anita at RB instead if he isn’t and use tiote and bigi as holders and marv as an attacking midfielder, Just i’d rather have anita in the middle really.

  • 40 TorqToon // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:00 PM

    Morning spread,

Yeah I know we have a delegation that covers BOTH Spain and Portugal. As much as our interest in de Jong is real, I will be shocked if he comes to us as I can see him attracting a huge fee! But wonders will never cease! 🙂

Somebody asked earlier if I knew much about outgoings at the club, (my apologies for not responding), I don’t know very much about what goes in from the club on the English side (sage and proud are much more informed than I am) but I tend to hear if any players from Europe are on their way in or out of clubs.

Lens is a very good prospect. I have done some digging this morning with regards Mirin (as I think he is our #1 choice defender whilst colo is still with us) and we had talks with his agents in December, nobody really knows (or is telling!) what went on, but I know we didn’t make an offer – yet we expressed a real interest. I have a sneaking suspicion we are looking to / possibly have agreed a deal in the summer, dependant on our league position at the end of the English season.

    Again, purely my own feeling.

  • 41 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:03 PM

Ibiza… Do you have any cutouts that aren’t broke or… ahem ‘encrusted’? If not just back into a random tourist repeatedly same effect really, that is of course if you haven’t been banned from doing so yet.

  • 42 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:08 PM

Campbell and Bigi are the top two, but Streete isn’t far off, and hopefully Mbabu will prove to be an astute purchase. When Vuckic is fit I expect him to be taking his chance if the opportunity comes along, if not, loan him out.

Lower down in age groups, Gillihead and Armstrong both look good, hopefully we can bring them on.

  • 43 sirtoongospel // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:08 PM

TS – totally agree, Marv is ineffective wide, and not as good as others centrally. Anita is a good player, but is learning the legue, and we can be patient with him.
My thouhts are that Cheick needs extra responsibility, and can be trusted to hold things on his own. Cabaye doesnt need to sit when Cheick plays and he can get forward more which is the key to Cisse.

Quick thinking and pressing high is the best was to get Papiss firing. If we sit deep he will never affect the game.

With Sissoko supporting Papiss, HBA and Gouffran wide, with Cabs pulling the strings, we will be awesome. Cheick can be relied on to boss other teams on his own! Against better teams they all graft anyway when we are under pressure

  • 44 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:11 PM

“Morning Spread”…..Anyone? No? Alright, we’ll just leave that alone 🙂

Rainrix…That could be a problem. I’ll give it a go, but If I’m not back on for the next year or two I expect you to come visit me in prison.

  • 45 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:15 PM

Huge fan of vukic….he is a real talent, just never stayed fit to get a run of games and improve.

He needs to go out for a full season somewhere as he won’t improve on our bench and won’t start ahead of some of our lads.

  • 46 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:16 PM

ibiza…. Sure thing though i imagine Ibizan prison is simply being locked in one of those nightclub cages, i’ll make sure to smuggle in some newcastle based paranthenallia for you.

  • 47 Owldman // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:16 PM

@ 12 Surely you meant to say before Owen became a full time conman he has played hardly any football for the last 5 seasons he’s earned a wadge of money , a lot of it from us & he’s still @ it, The little tosser. The 15 mill the scrap man used to buy him was in fact earmarked to provide better access to level 7.Dont know how many of you have to walk up those stairs but it is a killer.Time for the club to provide better access for disabled & elderly & parents with young children & there a lot of us

  • 48 Mister Tuff // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:17 PM

I see that Simmo, whilst he has been out of action with his toe injury, has been trying to promote a non continental style of dietary and recovery programme. This type of regime was popular in England several years ago before it was replaced by the continental programme, and could be described as “retro- scientific”.
Basically it consists of shagging around most nights, going out on the beer until the early hours night clubbing until “fighting drunk” status is reached. Finally ending off the night with a greasy kebab or curry and chips as part of the dietary provisions.

  • 49 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:18 PM

I hated walking up those stairs.

And owen was brilliant when he signed, was a great by….impossible to see he would get 2 big injuries which would ruin his game.

  • 50 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:21 PM

    mister tuff

It’s that revolutionary approach that means he can recover from a broken toe in a staggering 8months….a true marvel.

  • 54 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:29 PM

    Ey Torq,

Think RVW should be our no. 1 priority in the striker position……could play on his own or in partnership with Cisse / Gouffran. Good with his feet and would work very well with the rest of the midfield. The worry and issue that I have is that ALL prices for ALL players BUT especially STRIKERS will be hugely inflated in the summer due to the TV rights coming in. There won’t be too many bargains….that’s for sure.

Lens and RVW would be my preferred options and possibly Mirrin but only on the basis that Colo stays. Mirin is good but of the same ilk as Hairdryer and will need to go out on loan…..think the club call ’em Red players like Bigi n’ that. Able to cope in the 1st time as and when required!

  • 55 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:31 PM

Er…..thanks but I’ve already had breakfast and would prefer to hold that down! 🙂

Aye mate that was me asking about outgoings, just wanted to know if you’d heard anything about marveux? Heard that he wants garunteed first team and were not happy with his attitude and he’s been given permission to find a new club, not sure how reliable the bloke is for info but he fits a few of the lads with custom golf equipment
Personally can see it happening, he’s a good player, but a luxury player who doesnt seem as versatile as the rest of midfield with where he can play and seems very lethargic if not played in the number 10 role

  • 58 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:39 PM

You’ve scarred me…. 😉 The blog will never be the same again! LOL

  • 59 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:39 PM

Get the strongest team out and if we are comfortably ahead then blood the young guns.

    Not the other way round.

We have a chance to salvage something this season now. Our squad is too good to be relegated.

With a bit of luck we can reach the later stages and with a scoop of luck could win it.

I don’t adhere to this cautious approach in case we get injuries.

Get the game tied up and then give the young ones a chance!! Please!

  • 60 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:40 PM

tads…That sums up my feelings on Marv also. Shame really as he does have talent, but he only really seems to perform in that No.10 position and doesn’t budge any of our other players for that position really. Great option to have, but I can imagine he would want regular football.

How long is his contract with us?

  • 61 Mister Tuff // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:41 PM

I was trying to catch up on some Newcastle news and stumbled upon “The spectators View” blog under the heading “Newcastle Lookalikes”. There is a comparison between El Gourdo and Bobby from King of the Hill. The likeness is staggering -well worth a look. Link:-

  • 62 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:44 PM

    Spread…I’m pleased I could leave a lasting mark 🙂

Troy…Agreed. There is no good reason not to play our best team in the first leg and get that home advantage in the bag to take to the away leg. Seems pretty straight forward. Would be happy to see Mapou get the nod over either Colo or Taylor for the home game mind, but I don’t see that as not playing our strongest team.

  • 63 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:45 PM

    Marv is certainly not marvellous.

He’s had a couple of good games as an attacking midfielder but that’s it.

He’s not good enough on the wing. And quite rightly pointed out, there are now better options for his strongest position.

Squad player if he’s happy with that. If not, ship him out. Simples.

  • 64 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:46 PM

    Tuff….Scarily similar.

  • 65 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:48 PM

  • 66 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:50 PM

I don’t understand these people who are intent on playing the younguns before we have the game seen up.

It’s common sense that you play your strongest side because if they can’t get a decent lead then the younguns are gonna have no chance of beating them.

I also agree that Mbwia should play as he could, be listening to those who have watched him, turn out to be better than Colo and Taylor.

Bring the bastard cup back to SJP!!!!

  • 67 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:50 PM

  • 68 croftus5678 // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:51 PM

on the loan watch side mehdi abied had a really good game last night having a good shot saved making some very important tackles and winning a penalty !

i may have been wrong and this lad may be decent after all.

and i do hope cambell plays ! it fills me with a sense of pride that a home grown with so much skill and commitment gets a chance.

  • 69 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Exactly…get the main lads out for the game….10 days until the southampton game so plenty time to recover.

Also players could easily get injured in training so why worry about 1 extra game.

  • 70 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Stick with me and I will show you the ropes. 😉

  • 71 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:53 PM

dannyboy…Absolutely. I’m sure we all have some fresh new views to bring to the table.

Troy…I could understand in the group stages to be honest, but in a knock out scenario and no PL game for 10 days it would just make no sense. In an ideal world they could be given their chance with so much less pressure (after we trash them as SJP 🙂 ).

  • 72 donkeypunch // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:55 PM

[Wilfred Bony will not be a target for Newcastle, although he has been watched – but the thinking of Graham Carr is that he would struggle in the Premier League from a physical point of view.] really struggle to believe that seems like a smoke screen to me .WHAT DOES EVERYBODY ELSE THINK TO THAT STATMENT?

  • 73 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Troy….You sound just like my old PE teacher….oh the memories.

  • 74 croftus5678 // Feb 12, 2013 at 12:59 PM

we have plenty of depth now to rest a few of our more important players so they are not injured for our prem run.

lets face it the prem is far more important than europe even though i want a cup and any cup at that !

but if you take cisse out of the team we may yet even struggle in the prem which is why i would personally like to see cambell played and cisse on the bench.

mbiwa should play then we still have cover for the prem and also bigi/anita/hairdryer/marv as you do not lose much quality as they are touching 1st team and rest the likes of sissoko/cabaye instead of making them play a lot of football in a short time.

  • 75 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:01 PM

Croftus…Do you mean rest players for the first leg at home? On fitness is doesn’t effect the PL as we have 10 days to recover and on injuries that ship has already sailed really. We could lose Cisse to injury at any time, so don’t think playing the first leg is a huge gamble at all really.

I would be in favour of resting players for the second leg though, given we play Soton a few days later and that PL is still the highest priority.

  • 76 Sav // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Campbell should really be on loan for the season to a Champ/ship or SPL side getting regular foota -not the odd Europa outing and the reason is we have not enough strikers to give the lad time to develop.
Instead he has to hang around the bench hoping for a walk-on part.

  • 77 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:05 PM

I think Marveaux is a great player going forward, but he has limited abilities, in that he can play as a CAM but is unable to play on the flanks….unlike HBA who can do both. My other frustration and this applies to both Marveaux and Obertan is that both players are poor at tracking back. Marveaux is getting better but Obertan appears less willing to do so. Both need to make some improvement in these areas if they want to be 1st teamers IMO.

Marv can be a good player. He just dissappears too often.

He came on against Spurs… I can’t even remember him touching the ball, making challenges or runs etc.

  • 79 croftus5678 // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:08 PM

aye i see where you are coming from and agree there’s no need to rest for the first game but i would still rather players like anita/mbiwa/marv got a competitive game instead of coming on raw in a prem game if/when needed and it would keep them slightly happier as i would not want those players wanting to leave (marv maybe an exeption)

and training is more light paced and less chance of injury as they are not must win situations if cisse gets injured in any game prem/europe its hard to see how many goals we can get with goofy/ameobi (even though cisse is not prolific atm)

  • 80 check the toastie // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:09 PM

Marveuax had a real good run of games. Man Utd, Arsenal away(brilliant), Everton home, Norwich away then reading home, him being selected coincided with the team starting to play better football, Anita can also be praised during this period.

During this period there was alos no Jonas or Shola in the team, pretty much apart from Pardews insistence in sticking Cisse wide right against Everton. Marv and Anita have been badly done to, should beplaying instead of Perch and Jonas, they deserve credit for trying to get us to play in some really tough games.

Possession fotballers the two of them, Pardew for me throws to much weight behind footballers who can do a slide tackle.

  • 81 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:11 PM

Croftus….If we’re talking Anita, Mbiwa and Marv then I see them as in and around the “purple” bracket anyway, so wouldn’t be disappointed in seeing them start for the first leg.

  • 82 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:13 PM

Check…Would you play Marv as a started on the wing then instead of Jonas? Or Anita on the wing and Marv in a CM role?

I have no doubts about Anita at all. As for Marv, he clearly has talent, just not sure I rate him higher than any of the current starters in regards to what they offer the team, not referring to Jonas here, but once HBA is back Marv and Jonas should both struggle to make the starting 11.

  • 83 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:14 PM

Dont get wrong, on his day marv looks great, but those days seem to be few and far between
He doesnt seem to have the work ethic that other of the new lads have, like cabs etc, do you think he was a heavily scouted player or an oppurtunity signing whilst he was already over at liverpool?

  • 84 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:19 PM

I agree anita should be playing infront of perch and pardew does seem to struggle a bit with options so to speak ie when the starting 11 diesnt pick itself
But marv doesnt want to play on the wing and i dont think he’s as influential as cabs and gouffran and sissoko have shown a determination ge hasnt not to mention, for me anyway, more creation so whay do you do with him??

  • 85 qtoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:20 PM

I would much rather we were bringing on Campbell towards the end of a game compared to Shola. He’s a natural goalscorer and you can bet he would absolutely work his socks off chasing down defenders and hitting teams on the break. Lately Shola has been giving away freekicks at every opportunity, giving refs chat and generally looking lazy.

  • 86 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:22 PM

I see Marv and Anita as fringe players at this moment in time and therefore I wouldn’t start with them.

They are the players I would bring on once the game is secured.

I would play the team that started at Spuds.

This thing about giving them a run out to prepare them for the premier league is why we never win anything.

It’s bollocks to me. That’s not having a go at anyone personally as we all have different ideas but just to point out. Mine is the right idea so get used to it. 😀

  • 87 MUTINYbyLEMONS // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:25 PM

Wouldn’t play Campbell. We need to play Cisse to get him scoring again.

  • 88 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:28 PM

tads…I’m with you 100% on Marv. Really want him to succeed, but he’s purely a luxury player at the minute imo and Benny is by far a better one 🙂

  • 89 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:30 PM

tads…On whether we had previously scouted him…No idea at all. I imagine we were aware of him at the very least and just took the gamble at the last minute as he was on a free.

Would try and fit Marv in and would play him Right hand side in home games instead of Jonas. Also would play Anita in home games instead of Perch or Tiote, he deserves his chance for me.

Personally would setup like below against Metallica, wouldnt rest one player.

No need or reason to rest anyone, maybe play Obertan instead of Sissoko, maybe…….Get the team playing well and trying to winn games comfortably for me, instead of always scraping by.

  • 92 MUTINYbyLEMONS // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:36 PM

Mutiny I agree cisse needs to play so he can get on fire again. Some off the chances he had at Tottenham he would off put away last season. Regarding Campbell he needs to go out on loan so we can develop him and then bring him in for next season he needs experience

  • 95 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:42 PM

i think anita is a great versitile player, the time i seen him play a right back he was great, can slot in at dm easily too but when our team is full strength he wont appear, will he just accept being a bench warmer . . . time will tell but one things for sure the toons injury record is awful so i reckon he will get on in the future as our luck for injuries is terrible, im a fan of anita but nobody is sure of his best postition which will always limit a players game time, hes not outstanding in any particular positionm alot of the time versitile players suffer for this

  • 96 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:43 PM

    and the same for marv . . . .

  • 98 JackButler // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:43 PM

For me playing Campbell has to depend on how we are doing as a team, the last thing we should do is bring him into a side that is struggling as it’ll have an adverse effect on the lad, but if we have Cabaye, Sissoko, Gouffran and HBA flying then introducing him with 10-15 min’s left will help him

  • 101 Novocastrian66 // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:47 PM

Heard David Pleat talking about Marveaux on Saturday. Pleat knows Carr very well, and Carr told Pleat that Marveaux would be a tremendous asset for Newcastle. He went on to add that Carr also said he needs to be injury free and have a sustained run in the team.
Something along those lines anyway. The general theme of the discussion was that Carr had scouted Marveaux and had an extensive dossier on the player and rated him highly.

  • 102 croftus5678 // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:50 PM
this lad from holland will certainly put a smile on your face if we signed him ^^ reminds me of ronaldo.

  • 103 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:51 PM

    Agree with CTT

Pardew is too negative in his line ups.

Perch is a good tackler but doest bring anything to the game going forward, its like Simpson all over again.

Jonas has a great workrate which means hes more in our half than the oppositions. This is ok, but not for a winger.

Anita and Marvo deserve atleast some playing time as they havent put a foot wrong and are quality going forward.

Sometimes pardew likes to keep it safe, but does that actually mean we play safe?

I wonder where we would of been in the table if he took it to teams like we did man u and arsenal where we were unlucky in both. Lets not forget they were away fixtures aswell.

For me i would of started marvo ahead of guti and anita ahead of perch with tiote fighting for the middle spot and benarfa to come in and fight for the wingers position.

People want to forget about pardews pardews mistakes and the fact he plays negative line ups with players who are not the greatest going forward.

Its like im wishing on my own players to get injured ie guti and perch just so some quality players who can create going forward can replace them, thats not right is it?

  • 104 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:53 PM

“”You’d like to think with Yoan on one side, Ben Arfa on the other and Moussa Sissoko and (Papiss) Cisse through the middle – blimey, that’s mouth-watering for us.”
On a rare occasion I have to agree with Percy -that line up is exceptional -if Cisse returns to form.
The opposition will not be so keen to get forward/play too far up the field with Gouffran and Benny on the wings. A mouth watering prospect indeed.

  • 107 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:55 PM

i think sacking pardrew at any time this season is pure suicide
who would want to work with fatboy that has better credentials than pardew anyway
we are in the middle of assembleing a great team , why try and dismantle that progress ?
if next season we buy a good striker and a couple of other good bargin buys and pardrew isnt cutting it , id maybe understand people calling for his head

  • 114 check the toastie // Feb 12, 2013 at 1:59 PM

Mister Tuff, i think its a shame Parsnips comes out with stuff like that, it doesnt really give any incentive to the other players when they know Pardew has his best team already picked regardless of form and contribution.

He went on to say Tiote and Cabaye behind them, Anita and Marv must be well pissed off that they were doing a load of donkey work playing with Simmo, Willo a despertae Jonas, a selfish Ba and lazy Shola for months, new faces arrive and they are binned. Really unfair by Parsnoop.

  • 115 ~ Phoenix Warrior Perch~ // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:02 PM

@Mistertuff, with everyone on form, we have a scary team

Easily our best team when everyone on form. Its a shame, players like Cisse and tiote have not been able to reach the same level of performances as they had last season.

    ~Ben Arfa~~~~~~~~~Cisse~~~~~~~~~~~~Goofy~~~

That is honestly a scary team. If only Tiote could perform every game, the same way he performed against United in our 3-0 win, and Cisse scoring for fun…

  • 116 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:03 PM

justified though as that is our best team and if they perform well others will struggle to get many games.

  • 117 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:05 PM

I think Marv hasn’t had a single good game for us out wide. The odd good few minutes but in general poor.

He is 10x the player in a central role, unfortunately he is competing with sissoko and cabaye for that role.

  • 118 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Agree mate gouffran for me has come in and just owned that LW spot tbh think hes shown marv up a bit and also think sissoko and goofy have shown up the “pardews favourites” arguement a bit, and think guti will be dropped once HBA is back and fit

  • 119 JackButler // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:08 PM

    Transfer Sage

the worry is that the two player we have to play wide left in Marveuax and Jonas, both look better in more central roles

Without doubt we need a left winger come the summer

  • 120 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:09 PM

Its all good saying ben arfa and gouffran either side of cisse but hes had the chance to put 2 creative/pacey players either side all season ie benarfa obertan marvo amalfitano santon sameobi. But always resulted in an unbalanced line up in having one of those and guti basically another defender on the other side.

I like guti but if i had to play him in a position it would be fullback or CM and only LM/LW if we are holding on for a win and need some tracking back in those positions.

So id say the bench atm is his best position and bring him on to sure things up.

  • 121 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:12 PM

gouff is doing a good job left wing for me.

Ben arfa will come onto the right.

I agree we need another winger though as gouff might be even better as a striker in his natural role and we always need cover as obertan and jonas aren’t long term solutions.

  • 122 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:13 PM

I expect pardew will drop guti when ben arfa and gouff are both available.

  • 123 Rotonda heights // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:13 PM

    Jack Butler

I’m not so sure any more. Nobody though Ashley would sanction 6 new players coming in January.

Ashley’s like any businessman wanting a return on his investment. If Pards doesn’t deliver with this squad, I’m not so sure Ashley would stand for it.

Whereas in the past no one good would come here because of Ashley, most managers seeing this squad now where M’Biwa and Anita aren’t even in the starting here would fancy giving it a go.

  • 124 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Also other wide options you mention.

    marv (doesn’t play well wide)
sammy and fergie (not good enough yet)
amal and ober (not good enough either)

  • 125 Twatter // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:16 PM

    Team against Kharkiv:

Perch has played at RB and coped before, can always swap Anita around with him. Marveaux, Sissoko and Anita are all interchangeable and should provide plenty for Cisse to (hopefully) get on target. Can’t guarantee that from the “wingers” but that’s to be expected!

Just made me realise looking through the squad how thin we are in that area at the moment.

  • 126 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:17 PM

Agreed, Anita is great but benefits playing alongside another defensive type of player. My ideal scenario is either Anita and Cabaye in a partnership with Anita holding back or Tiote (on a good day) partnered with Cabaye.

  • 127 Twatter // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:18 PM

Has Adam Campbell ever played wide by the way? If he was able to do a job there I could see lots of opportunities for him in the future if we don’t improve our current roster of wingers and continue this 4-5-1/4-4-3 system.

  • 128 JackButler // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:18 PM

Ashley is certainly an enigma, come the summer he could spend 30 million on the squad or sell everyone and cash in.

Thats why I’d be very weary of wanting Pardew out, if we got Laudrup or someone suchlike then I’d be all for it, but the man like a gamble and that still worries me

Thats our main problem, after HBA and Gouffran our wide options are average at best.
We have depth to our back four and central midfield now but out wide and up front we are still very thin on quality

  • 131 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:22 PM

    @transfer sage

Marv does play out wide just prefers the middle.

Obertan on the wing is still more theatening than Jonas.

Amalfitano hasnt been given a chance and i think hes a great player from what iv seen.

I didnt say fergie and sammy is the last person on that list i gave u that id use.

So i think my point is still valid.

  • 132 Twatter // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:27 PM

And Gouffran has only played three games. We can’t say he’s fantastic just yet. I would be telling you the same if he had taken a while to settle in and had not performed so well.

Time is important. Our only proven useful winger at this stage is Ben Arfa.

  • 133 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:27 PM

I never said you did…just going through all our options.

Obertan hasn’t cut it for me at all…at least jonas does the donkey work, obertan doesn’t even do that. Obertan has poor delivery and opts to leave the ball for somebody else instead of crossing. (only looked good in a handful of europa league games)

Marv can play wide but I fail to think of a single good game he has had wide for us, much much better in the middle.

  • 135 croftus5678 // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:31 PM

i think maybe pardrews main weakness is loyalty but to some extent i agree with it, like take perch he played well so he didnt drop him ….. fair enuf … gave mr.t a reality cheack , and to play jonas is argueable but in his defense marveaux would go missing in games like spurs and villa

aye i’m with you every word there.

  • 138 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:34 PM

Gouffran NOT a winger but can play there and is excellent at tracking back and links up very well with Santon et al.

Jonas good at tracking back, good defensive qualities but has lost some of his pace….offers very little offensively and very rarely offers an end product.

Obertan fast paced but reluctant to go beyond his man, provides a very good product when he gets to the byline which is no where near often enough, offers very little/nothing tracking back and leaves Debuchy vulnerable.

Marveaux is NOT a winger and cannot play in a 4-4-2 as he is not a wide player. Better suited playing in the hole.

Sissoko could potentially be used as a wide player, he has the ability and the pace but may be less effective offensively.

HBA not a traditional wide player, tracks back and offers everything you want offensively. Sometimes he drifts inwards too often but sometimes this is part of his magic!

  • 139 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:36 PM

gouff isn’t a winger i agree but plays ok there……in this formation the wide med are more forwards than genuine hug the toughline wingers of old…..benny and gouff fit that mold well for me.

  • 140 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:37 PM

Thats because pardew hasnt played him wide often.

And would u rather a hard working winger who creates fuck all and scores once in a blue moon or a winger who does a wingers job and stays on the full back and gets in behind and creates goals?

    I know what id rather…

  • 141 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:38 PM

I don’t think amalfitano is going to do much for us. Never been hugely impressed and at the age of 23 he cannot even get into the team, not even the game at brighton where it was all kids.

  • 142 Twatter // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:38 PM

What is your definition of a winger? Because if it’s based on the talent of a player in that position, Marveaux is far more cut out as a winger than Gutierrez and Obertan. Certainly has better end product than both of them combined. So when you say he’s not a winger, remember you’re calling Obertan and Gutierrez wingers, which is questionable in itself based on their most recent performances.

  • 143 WWYCD // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:41 PM

Good for Campbell…won’t make it in the PL but he can dream (enter me being slagged on so while we are at it…)

I’d be happy enough if we sold Marv and replaced him with someone who will tackle or challenge for a ball…or work for the team ideally. Of course if he grows some balls and realizes he’s not made of glass am open to changing my mind

  • 144 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Would u rather a hard working winger who tracks back and does the dirty work but creates eff all and scores once in a blue moon, or

Would u rather a pacey/creative winger who stays on the full back and makes runs in behind at every attack and creates goals and oppotunities for the team and track back if needed?

Jesus mate, you just blindfolded yourself and stepped in front of the firing squad there 😀

  • 146 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:43 PM

I think by hos own admission marveaux isn’t a winger, he much prefers a central role.

I think on the wing he drifts out of the game too much, in the middle he has to be involved and he often is to good effect.

I think obertan is poor and hasn’t improved a jot since he joined us. How long can his confidence be low before people just finally say he isn’t good or consistent enough.

Jonas isn’t good going forward, can’t cross but he defends ok and whilst that isn’t his role i’d rather that than marv or obertan who offer even less when played wide.

  • 147 Twatter // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:43 PM

What? Why would you sell him? Are you getting Marveaux mixed up with someone who is s**te?

    i.e Obertan.

  • 148 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Thats not my point at all.

My point is that out wide, marv, ober and jonas offer very little going forward, neither are great and don’t really give that many good chances. None of them do that much really.

What I’m saying is i’d rather have jonas who does nothing going forward but works hard going back instead of marv or ober who do nothing going forward or back on the wing.

I’d much rather see ben arfa and gouff out there when fit. Then bring in another in the summer to challenge those two.

  • 149 Twatter // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:48 PM

Whether by his own admission or not, I think it’s safe to say he still offers more out wide than Gutierrez or Obertan will.

In my books, if that’s the case as I see it, then he should be played as a winger regardless of where he wants to play. The boy should be wanting to get into the team first and foremost.

What I’m trying to say here is that if we’ve only got two fit wingers that we identify as such (i.e Obertan and Gutierrez) yet it can be accepted Marveaux would offer more in this position, then we need to re-evaluate the parameters of “winger”. If we were actually to put the positions to how the players use or misuse the ball on the pitch and how they play in general, we could say Jonas is a defensive midfielder and Obertan may as well be the sweeper for the opposition side, what with his remarkable ability to over-run the ball and out for a goal kick…

Anyway I’m rambling, you get the drift…

  • 150 ~ Phoenix Warrior Perch~ // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:50 PM

    @Transfer Sage

To be fair to Obertan, he has those occasional moments where he does a good job tracking back.

  • 151 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:51 PM

I totally agree…play where you are told….might mean you aren’t at your best but if its best for the team you should be willing to do it.

From what I have seen I think out wide marv offers less than jonas. I can’t think of a single good game he has had wide. He just doesn’t turn up, he struggles with that position so I don’t see the point of him being there.

  • 152 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Ober offers very little goin forwsrd in a wide position.

    I have to disagree.

And u havent seen enough of marveaux in the wide position to judge, but in the man u and arsenal games i think he done himself justice andplayed very well wide.

I do agree he is better in the middle but u cant say he wouldnt be better than jonas going forward in that wide position.

  • 153 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:53 PM

Fair enough. But he doesn’t as much as jonas and I still think we are no better off attacking when obertan plays.

He just doesn’t cut it at all for me…would like to see him leave this summer and us bring in a good winger.

  • 154 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Obertan is useless…he really does offer very little. I think the guy is hopeless, not suited to the english game in anyway. Seems a likeable guy just not good enough.

Marv is annonymous for me when wide. I think the games I’ve seen him there we may as well have 10. Rarely gets the ball and isn’t that good at getting up and down the wing.

Hopefully we just bring in 1 or 2 wide men/inside forwards so we don’t need to continue this debate next season…in essence we are arguing over who is the best of a bad bunch out wide haha.

  • 155 check the toastie // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:57 PM

If Marv played wide right or left instead of Jonas he would create chances and score goals, he hasnt had a chance, and the small chance he has had he has contributed more goals and assists than Jonas has in 18 months. Its a no brainer for me.

Remember Marv needs a go when played in a strong team, he has had to play in a sevely weakened one most of the time, with no-one to play off.

Also as much as i love Goofy’s workrate, really dont want Pardew to turn him into the next Jonas, constantly tackling back and covering full backs, he needs to play up the pitch, he is a striker first and foremost.

  • 156 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Agreed that our players i.e. Gouffran and HBA are played there as fwds.
Both “Obertan” and “Jonas” IMO are designated wingers. Everyone else including Marveaux are not designated wingers, I’m not saying that Marveaux offers less, that would be CRAZY! 🙂 Besides I think Marveaux has the highest volume of assists in the team. I think Marv is great but not sure where he fits given the inclusion of Sissoko, unless you rotate the two, but Marveaux is a CAM and NOT a winger. I feel very strongly on that…..that’s why I feel we need to bring someone in like Jermaine Lens as opposed to another player who can sit in the hole like Siem. I’d rather have RVW as he offers more options /possibilities and would be a BETTER fit in view of our winter window and looking fwd with the players we currently have. Hope that helps to explain better of what I was trying to say!

  • 157 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:01 PM

thats obertans stats for us this year and last year.

    years starts subs goals assists
    11/12—- 19 7 1 5
    12/13—- 11 9 1 3

Thats not good enough in my eyes.

  • 158 davybtoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:01 PM

i like obertan always thought fans hav had it in for him b4 he even kicked a ball for us, id hav him over jonas any day, jonas does track back but thats not his job his main job is to create n he does nothing creative, obertan does n has more assists than jonas this n last season

  • 159 davybtoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:03 PM

sage – for the games hes played thats a decent return put jonas stats up i bet there worse by a mile n he plays double if not triple the games obertan does

these sort of players are deadwood, were too good to take man us rejects including simpson!
we are heading to the next level and these sort of players arent welcome

  • 162 davybtoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:08 PM

in 4 premier league seasons jonas has only scored 7 goals shocking for a winger of his ability

  • 163 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:09 PM

    starts subs goal assists
    40 1 3 3
    22 1 0 13

Thats Jonas….neither make great reading to be fair.

  • 164 davybtoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:12 PM

sage obertan n jonas are good squad players but if i had to pick id go obertan everytime, gouffran n hba will hav the wing postions from southampton game onwards

  • 165 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:13 PM

I still don’t want marveaux out wide.

He prefers to play inside and doesn’t ever seem to be in the game when out wide. It just wastes him and that position.

  • 166 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:14 PM

hopefully they will….I’d go jonas but i’m not overly bothered which as neither fill me with confidence.

I just hope they are sold in the summer and replaced with better foreign players…only have room in the squad for 3 more non british lads.

  • 167 davybtoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:15 PM

cant wait to see hiadara and mbiwa play on thursday

  • 168 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:16 PM

Yea but jonas for me isnt a winger and a goal a season in that position track back or not, its not good stats.

Marvo would create as much as a winger but not play like one granted. He would cut in and use his technical and passing ability to create goals.

And ober has still got pace to get at players and in a team of quality players u never know, u could see the best of him.

Guti is obviously well respected by pardew for the work he puts in but if u play in a lw position and score next to nothing in a season ur not doing a wingers job.

Parfew concentrates too muvh on defending a game than getting goals and that has hurt us this season for sure.

Look at fergie at man u, all hes concentrated on is getting goals and look where he has his team.

He has know where near the talent chelsea and man c have yet there ahead by more than 4 wins.

Makes u think the position in the table could be different if he was just s bit bolder and attacked all the teams like we did man u and arsenal from the start, hmmm….

  • 169 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:17 PM

Ideally we need a couple of new wingers. Its the exact same squad problem we’ve had all season, our starters (goofy HBA) are very good but our backup (obertan sammy) is relatively poor.

Ideally 2 we’d get 2 wingers 2 CBs and 2 Strikers and i feel we’d have a complete squad then. Unlikely but it would be nice.

  • 173 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Cockney… Fergie doesn’t just concentrate on goals, he demands work ethic and team defending, a great example being Rooney. Fergie has simply been doing it for so long that he can almost effortlessly strike the right balance. To say he focuses solely on attacking is incorrect. chelsea focus mostly on attacking and they still lose. Fergie has a ridiculously effective unit.

Pards is trying to do a similar thing only he doesn’t seem to be able to make it click.

  • 174 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:26 PM

He concentrates more on possession play and gettin players up the pitch and using the wings, theyve let in so many goals yet scored so many more.

So for me thats bold and deffinatley an attacking style of play.

    Unlike ours.

  • 175 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:28 PM

Fergies teams – you’ve hit it in one – simple effective system – works year in year out . Refreshers it each year with one or two quality signings.
We were up there Keegan/Robson but blew it big style.

Hopefully under Ashley and pardew we are slowly getting there.

just got to keep patient – which at times is hard

  • 176 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:33 PM

Exactly possession, when they lose the ball they work as a team defend as a unit and win the ball back quickly and don’t relinquish it.
Man u rarely concede when they’re penned in, they mainly concede on the counter. if you look at the 3 goals we scored against them they were all counter attacks.

in case you haven’t noticed we’re also ridiculously at risk to counter attacks. We do attack, we just get undone by loose tracking back and defending which i assume is why pards insists on picking jonas, he covers santon when he constantly bombs forward

  • 177 WWYCD // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:33 PM

Cig in hand my friend haha

As a rotation options I’d keep him but he’s just too soft for me to want in the starting 11, ducks out of challenges left right and centre plus half the time he loses the ball and stops…I like someone in the Cabaye mould who if u take the ball from him he’ll run u into the ground trying to get it back. Marv is worse than HBA at it. Am just not sold on him being for the PL

Flog him for 5mill+ and am not going to complain as long as he’s replaced, same goes for Obertan tbh

  • 178 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Completely agreed on Marv. Playing him out wide is a waste of time, he is nullified and does not thrive there. Square pegs and round holes comes to mind. Marveaux is best in the hole and given that he has worked so hard to be part of the team I think he should stay and fight it out with Sissoko.
As our designated wingers are Jonas and Obertan….if I was brutally honest they are now our weakest areas on the pitch. Jonas has lost his pace and IMO is best serving the team as a DM and that’s where his future lies. I cannot see another team coming in for him, so best apply him there in the future. As for Obertan, I like the lad but he’s not at the same standard as other players in their respective position and should be sold in the summer. I’d rather sell Obers and bring in another winger instead, pay a little more but bring somebody who is of equal stature as other players in their position.

  • 179 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:36 PM

Man u has scored 64 goals and let in 31

Thats 20 more than the next team but theyve let in more goals than ever with them around 8th in goals conceeded.

Correct me if im wrong but thats bold attacking style of play

  • 180 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:37 PM

Charlie… Yup this year it was van persie. If you look man u’s team imo the only standout players are rooney, van persie, evra and vidic the rest are good but hardly worldbeaters. The fact is fergie knows how to set a side up to win.

I think pards is a fan of that style and wants to emulate it, unfortunately it hasn’t really come off yet, but we’re making progress. Like you say patience is key

  • 181 check the toastie // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Gotta say, if we get Benny Back and Mr T returns to his form of when he first came, we will have a team that is a match for anyone. Hope Yanga comes good as we need some more pace at the back, personally would consider rotating the three CB’s, most top teams do that anyway.

    ……………Cabaye…Mr T……………..

That is a super unit, Sissoko will need to drop in a bit more and allow Ben10 and Goofy to push on, i dont want to see Goof and Benny defending all the time when we are at home against cack. Options from the bench such as Marv, Anita and Obertan, will we ever get a fully fit eleven?

Hope we Scooby Doo for the Mackem game.

  • 182 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:39 PM

I meant I’d sell obertan or jonas providing we need their squad place…ie they’d be some of the first to go once we fill out quota of non british players.

  • 183 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:43 PM

Man utd do attack a lot….make sure they win the game instead of drawing.

I think we would have benefited by attacking the lesser teams, southampton, swansea, west ham, reading, etc more like we did against arsenal and man utd.

Not saying it would have turned our season but would have done no harm to us either.

  • 184 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:43 PM

We need to make priorities now to free up space in our squad. Its simple for me……….Jonas & Obertan.

  • 185 Mister Tuff // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:46 PM

croftus @112 – I checked out the video you recommeneded in respect of Zakaria Bakkali – wow what a player -now he would be a good addition.

check @114 -I know what you mean about the manager publicly announcing what his preferred selection would be -and the effect this may have upon the other players. However do you not think with the passage of time -with his preferred line up -the other players would know without being told who was ahead of them?

  • 186 rainrix // Feb 12, 2013 at 3:46 PM

Im not saying they don’t attack, I’m saying because they work hard and have a good work effort they win games. Even when they concede they come back because as a team they defend win possession and dont relinquish it. Thats why they score so many goals.

thats the balance pards is trying to get. As you’ve no doubt seen against man u and arsenal when we go full bore we score goals but sure as hell concede them.

  • 187 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:00 PM

    @rotunda H

    You say;

you obviously didn’t see marveaux’s assist for ba at the emirates. if that wasn’t class, i don’t know what is in your eyes!

    I say;

Most pro footballers can pull pearlers out the bag once in a while. Marv is no different.

It’s doing it regular that matters.

I have no issue with Marv other than I haven’t seen anything yet to big him up.

He’s a good squad player. His best role seems to be an attacking midfielder but I now believe we have better players.

He’s a fringe player and therefore should not start on Thursday.

    @Transfer Sage
So true. Last season it was the same story, Pardew would have us pressing the attack vs. top clubs, but on some occasions would have us dialing back vs. lower clubs.

Mind you we often beat the lower clubs but a couple times we got blown out.

I think with the spark and strength Moussa and Gouffran bring that shouldn’t be the case. And I doubt Shampton will put Colo and Santon under as much duress as Spurs did.

Not worried about their win vs. City, City are $#!t at the moment 🙂

  • 202 Transfer Sage // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:26 PM

    our game is thursday

Last year we got a lot of scrappy 1-0/2-1 wins against lesser sides…thats ok but to kick on you need to be beating those teams comfortably and not hoping things go your way.

I think southampton were good vs city but city created all their own problems really, they allowed southampton to play, if they were on top form southampton couldn’t have stopped them.

  • 203 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:28 PM

@transfer sage i know , wasnt thinking , meant to be working here haha

  • 204 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:31 PM

I don’t believe its as easy as you make out. I don’t believe Pardew trusted his defence when we had Willo in the side and against Man Utd due to injuries to midfielders like Jonas he was forced to put Marv in.

That gave us a more attacking approach but more vulnerable at the back.

Hopefully with Tayls, Colo and Mbwia we won’t need to play as defensive in midfield.

On top of that, some clubs like Man Utd prefer to play on the counter and allow teams to come at them.

    It’s pretty basics. You’ll learn. 😉

  • 205 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:31 PM

Not sure i agree with that mate, he does look ineffective at LW but it cant be said thats nit his position, he’s spent huge amounts of his carerr at LW/LM not exactly a square peg mate, just not very good there, which is a shame seeing as i imagine thats the position he was bought in to play
He’s not going to dislodge any of our current midfield, no chance.
So unless he nails down LW as a started and gets first team i cant see him being here next season and given his contribution, as long as he’s replaced with some one with a genuine role to play, i cant say id really be that bothered

Mister Tuff@ 184—- proving that the mark of a wise person is that your always learning. For the aspiring Pardew’s comments would serve to motivate. It’s my contention that prior to our French influx in the window that there was little real competition for places and the team largely picked itself. It’s good that there is competition for places and a good nucleus of top quality talent at long last. Nothing that the top sides do’t enjoy.
At the weekend I learnt that the coaching staff had felt Shane Ferguson had blotted his copybook by sulking when he was displaced in the reserves when Davide Santon first joined . We should get Shane out on loan for the remainder of the season because he has not grasped the opportunity this season to impress.

  • 208 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:34 PM

Thats the reason why i think pardews out of depth because we showed we can score goals against the best of teams.

Yes we conceeded a few but we gave them a good run for their money at their home turf.

Pardew is too negative in his line ups and u say hes trying to adopt fergies style and line ups but i think he couldnt be any further away from doing that.

Pardew doesnt play enough creative midfielders/wingers, well atleast from what iv seen most of this season he hasnt.

Man u have a good balance to their team and he always has creative wingers and midfielders in the team.

Where as fergie will play carrick, pardew would play perch. The same goes for for fergie playing nani valencia young over pardew playing guti or even anita high up the pitch.

It just doesnt work and i think there isnt balance in the team, far too defencive. U cant have someone one side who tracks back and defends most of the game creating and scoring eff all(guti) and ben arfa on the last man creating and scoring plenty on the other side. Wheres the balance in that???

In the end, he was our only real option.

  • 211 89Norcal // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:37 PM

But you have to say Perch has been great in this last string of games.

  • 212 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:42 PM

Marv may have played as a winger in the past, and that may have been the reason for bringing him in…………..but it’s not his best position, far from it.

Marveaux is a valuable player and offers something different and so should not be overlooked. Both Obertan and Marv offer something else that our other midfielders didn’t when playing Arsenal and Man U. Directness and pace! I think Marveaux should fight for his place and like you say improve hi game to enable him to be more adaptable and get better at tracking back.
Obertan and Jonas however IMO are perhaps players we could afford to offload on the basis that we brought in better quality.

  • 213 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:43 PM

Your missing the point mate, perch is a quality player but not going forward.

I would of had tiote straight back in or anita infront of him just because there attacking threat is greater than perchs and can create a lot more from a deep lying role but also do as good a job as perch.

Dont get me wrong i like perch but reminds me alot of simpson, great defender but offers nothing goin forward.

  • 214 toonicle // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Let’s hope so. We didn’t loan him out so he should be on the bench for many of our games the rest of the season. He should be getting 15-20 minutes as a sub on for Cisse if things are going well Thursday.

  • 215 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:48 PM

just to let use know perchs pass completion rate was 97% against spurs and he broke play up well, tiote seems to lose the ball alot in danderous postitions , pardrew didnt want to change a winning team and it nearly worked until goofy got taken of, pardew is letting the players know not to take their place for granted which i agree to i.e tiote and anita was argueably to lightweight for the spurs game but i can understand ur fustration cockney magpie, u will slowly see perchy getting eased out of the team in upcoming weeks

  • 216 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:50 PM

His best attribute is tackling but id like to see someone with a range of attributes in the middle of the park.

Someone who can ping the ball out to the winger, dribble with the ball and make great tackles (tiote, anita, bigi).

With perch u only get tackles, which is good but if he finds himself in an advanced position dont expect much from him.

I brought this topic up a few days ago, about the obvious gap in creative play and passing between Anita and Perch.

I think Perch’s first game back in the XI was vs. Aston Villa, and most people here agreed he was used to matchup Benteke in size. Anita would have been bulldozed by him.

But Perch has given us some great defensive security AND because of the additions of Gouffran and Sissoko (who I didn’t expect to be so talented going forward) makes the sacrifice of Anita much less apparent.

So in other words we haven’t NEEDED Anita nearly as much as we did pre-January. He will be a better matchup to teams that lack a bruiser like Benteke and allow us more space.

Perch has been mostly faultless and he’s had a few key tackles to cover for our defense as well.

  • 219 Super Magpie // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:51 PM

I think if we really want to move up a level then the likes of Perch and Jonas should not be starting. But, these players are invaluable to us when we are the situation we are in at the moment as they will dig in and add some experience to the team which is what we have been lacking.

At the end of the season we should assess the situation and go on from there. I can’t see Jonas starting many games next season, even with his work ethic but he should definitely be kept as a squad player. We should be looking to bring in another winger, striker and a CB when Colo leaves.

  • 220 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:51 PM

Did u not notice that most of perchs passes were backwards?

  • 221 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:52 PM

i agree tiote and anita are more complete players , pardrew is just making players fight for the shirt and perform to their maximum ability

  • 222 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:55 PM

@ cockney , i did notice that , he understands his capibilities , he knows what hes good at and what hes bad at, most of the time he gave it to cabaye, which is the senseible thing to do , he is the playmaker , he will get eased out of the team in , he wont start the rest of the epl

  • 223 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:55 PM

I do t doubt perchs quality /versatility and hes improved alot for us.

But hes not our best at going forward or picking out killer passes and playing good football/link up play.

I just think we would create alot more with either tiote or anita in the set up as they are far more comfortable on the ball than perch.

  • 224 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:57 PM

But how can you be sure what his best position is based on the odd match he’s played for us?
Rennes utilised him mainly as a LW so if say he came here wanting a new challenge who exactly will he dislodge from our midfield out of intrest, given he’s already said he wants regular football or he’ll be off?
Because i cant see him taking the spot from any of our lads in midfield

  • 225 Mister Tuff // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:57 PM

Ian Toon @206 – afternoon Ian.
I do not disagree with your comments that until the latest influx of players Percy did not have a lot of options available, but I still suggest that the “top three” at the Toon were jointly responsible for the “big summer no buy gamble” – they have, well Owl Head and Percy, have admitted as such. Some posters suggest Percy is free of all blame -which is NOT what he says.
However, we are where we are now,and my approach is to view the season from when or new players arrived until the end of the season – including an assessment of Percy – bearing in mind Owl Head has stated Percy is going nowhere.
If the “tone” in the dressing room is anything like the “tone” on the blog clearly a positive/optimistic feeling is
    prevalent for the remaining games.
I also think that Owl Heads’ interviews with the Journal have allayed fears. Nobody would expect to learn all the inside information but general comments as to the direction the club are going and aims within a certain time frame. It would appear that the board are learning -albeit slowly. I was surprised that Owl Head reads blogs.
So general feeling is of optimism -but we still need some new players -so an interesting summer window lies ahead.

  • 226 Rotonda heights // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:59 PM

It’s pretty embarrassing comparing Pardew’s record well to pretty much anyone’s, let alone Fergie’s. I know in his own mind Pardew is the best thing ever, but statiscally he’s never pulled up any trees exactly. Our old reserve team coach Roeder got us in to Europe one year. Enough said.

With the players we have now, Perch and Jonas shouldn’t be ahead of Anita, MYM, Tiote or Marveaux.
The Mullins and Harewood over Tevez and Mascherano scenario is not something I want to see repeated.

Used in the right positive way with the emphasis on attack and not just worrying about the opposition, then handled the right way we should be a joy to behold.

I will salute Pardew for playing Socks in an advanced role, however. It’s things like that that make Pardew an enigma when in the next instance he’ll do something ridiculous to cancel out all his good work.

  • 227 89Norcal // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:59 PM

you said it yourself basically. Perch is not used for his creativity but his defensive awareness and size, plus the fact he’s performed well in those respects.

We already have two fullbacks pushing up, how many men do we want to commit forward? 🙂

  • 228 WWYCD // Feb 12, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Perch a quality player really? He’s a good squaddie who fills a few holes but quality player he is not imo

  • 229 Twatter // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:03 PM

Can’t believe some of the criticism of Marveaux on here, and the idea being flogged that he offers little more than Jonas going forward. Complete nonsense, sorry. We’ll have to agree to disagree. Sylvain, with the small chances he has been afforded, has proven himself to be one of our best creative players this season. That’s it. Play him where you like – he’s twice the player Jonas is ever going to be now he’s an old fogie.

  • 230 WWYCD // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:04 PM

Marv has said he’ll be off if we don’t give him regular football? Haha cheeky tart

  • 231 Ian Toon // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:07 PM

The Saints have been very impressive of late. Under Pochettino they have gone up a notch or two. For me our performance @st.mary’s saw us at our lowest ebb this season . We’re in a relegation battle let’s not get ahead of ourselves. They press and battle home and away and are a cohesive unit. Ricky Lambert like his team is bang in form and a much underrated good professional who deserves England recognition irrespective of his age. Much was made of Man City being poor but I thought Southampton were first class. I don’t care whether we only win by a one goal margin we need the 3 points. That said we can afford to field a strong Europa side which we enable us to sort out the
CD, Saturday saw Coloccini and Taylor ponderous and slow to react to the pacy Bale. It’s only a matter of time for Yanga unchained.

  • 232 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Exactly rotonda! I also think sissoko in that position is genius but he then plays guti in LW which is ridiculous! I dont get pardews thinking behind it.

Im not asking for him to rush up and attack. Im just asking for a player to sit in that position, break up play, keep possession well and create for the forward men and if needed get involved in the attacks where i think anita or tiote would be better.

  • 233 Rotonda heights // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:09 PM

People defending pardew say he has not previously had people comfortable on the ball available to him. Perch over Anita, I rest my case.

I like perch he is a good solid honest pro. but like simmo and willo he is very limited in setting up any attacking and passing moves.

If you pay 6M for someone who can do that and was m.o.m for 3 matches in a row why is he suddenly out of the picture for a journeyman?

The fear of losing is what is stopping pardew really kicking on. With Benny for Jonas and MYM or Anita for Perch and a 3 points for a win, not 3 draws mentality
    we could really fly.

  • 234 Mister Tuff // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Ian Toon – you also mention Fergie in your earlier post. Prior to the new arrivals attending I had assumed that some of the youngsters would get unexpected chances to play in the first team to prove themselves as they would be of a high standard. Looking back now “the youngsters” have been exposed as not of the required quality -some may progress but equally some will never progress to the required standard. This aspect would also appear to have be accepted by the management and a clearout is required. Getting back to young Fergie -whilst he is a tidy player -I just don’t think he will make it a the highest level.

  • 235 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:10 PM

everybody lets gave perchy and jonas a break lol , they give 110% and everyone on this blog knows there not going to be in are 1st team much longer, anita and tiote our ahead of perch and gouffy/HBA are ahead of jonas , and i think marv should be to but mr.pardrew doesnt think so :-s. there good squad players to have and there good men who are very professional and lift team morale.
on another subject what was mr.wenger thinking not going in for sissoko , he clearly would have jumped at the chance to play for them according to todays quotes, more fool him ! not like him to miss a gem ! 🙂 more for the toon

  • 236 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:10 PM

Seem to remember him doing an interview back in november/december and have heard plently of rumours since to suggest he’s not happy with us and were not happy with him
Either way like i said for me atm he’s a luxury player and not a starter, impact sub but not a starter

  • 237 Spreadthetoon // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:10 PM

It’s difficult to know really what Marveaux has said……none of our players other than say HBA, Cabaye, Colo n Krul r definite day in day out 1st teamers. Every player had to fight for their place. If a player is not prepared to do that then best they move on. We need a squad of players who are all vying for their place.
The addition of Sissoko may have well nullified Marv to an extent but realistically we need depth to cope with a large fixture list….and we’re a club that wants to be able to compete for CL. As for squad places my viewpoint @ 90 is where I currently see things.

  • 238 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:12 PM

Rotonda…Do you not think Perch was the right choice or at worst an arguably good choice to play against Aston Villa over Anita?

Not talking about Chelsea or Spurs here, just against Villa given it was always likely to be a scrappy and physical game.

  • 239 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:12 PM

    Mister tuff @233
Sad to say i agree with you there

  • 240 Super Magpie // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:14 PM

    Team for Thursday
    Simpson? Saylor MYM Haidara
    Tiote Anita
    Jonas Sissoko Marveaux

Struggling to come up with wingers with no HBA or Gouffran. Marveaux is not at his best on the wing and Jonas offers little offensively. I think Metalist will come here and sit back, try and get a sneaky away goal.

Ukraine doesn’t sound like a fun experience for us so if we don’t take a lead into the 2nd leg we’re probably out. It wouldn’t be the end of the world though.

  • 241 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:16 PM

  • 242 Ian Toon // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:17 PM

Mister Tuff– Hiya. Gooday sport. A very good afternoon to you. ( please delete which is inappropriate). I can only find it within me to criticise our manager on historical grounds. Of Carroll stays and with a squad bereft of players and no depth going on the defensive to protect a 1-0 lead against WBA and we got lucky at the death. We will have to agree to disagree on him believing that MA would cough up the dish to bring in the players we bought in January.

  • 243 89Norcal // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:18 PM

You’re right that Anita and even Tiote offer more going forward, question is what is more important in that particular game for us?

We’ve had no shortage of creative play going forward with Gouffran and Sissoko now here, and we played excellent vs. Chelsea even with Perch in.

Anita gets muscled off the ball at times and Tiote had been playing poorly before Afcon. So on that basis, IMHO, Perch has a justifiable starting spot but yes I would like to see Anita in there vs. teams like Man Utd, Shampton, or maybe City.

It wouldn’t surprise me but I can’t see where we are going score from, even with Cisse playing as he’s been off form for too long now and I’m starting to doubt him. Shola can not last a full 90 minutes and probably shouldn’t start. But, Pardew might not want to take the risk of Cisse possibly getting injured.

  • 246 WWYCD // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:20 PM

Must of missed that mate but it wouldn’t shock me to hear its true…I agree though he’s a luxury/low end game player for me as I’ve said if he mans up he could push for regular starts hell if he even was level with Gutti (whose no macho man let’s face it) he’d be better for it

Won’t write him off but atm he’s not close to dislodging a starting 11 player and I don’t think he really has been since he arrived

  • 247 89Norcal // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:21 PM

I would expect Cisse to play considering the EPL break we have.

  • 248 Super Magpie // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:23 PM

The only thing Tiote offers going forward are his long range ‘attempts’ on goal. Honestly, I’m sick of the fans urging him to shoot. Pardew needs to tell him not to shoot either. Too many times have we gotten forward and wasted the opportunity by taking a shot too early.

  • 249 Ian Toon // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:25 PM

Mister Tuff– One thing I have learnt is that players in the academy and reserve sides often flatter to deceive. The case to get the aspiring talent out on loan is overwhelming particularly now we have extra bodies. Ferguson was like a nervous kid on a number of occasions and blatantly not showing for the ball. There will be a cull at the end of the season and Shane has it all still to do to impress. It’s never a good time to bring players into a struggling side and he has a history of injuries.

  • 250 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:27 PM

My ideal team for southampton onwards…

    3 subs being..
Mbiwa coming on for the defence.
    Anita for dm positions.
    And marv for am positions.

I feel sorry for anita marvo because yhey have performed in the game time theyve had. Pardew talks about positions being under threat because the depth we have yet hes dropped 2 in form players and started guti who is out of form and 2 new guys.

Im not saying that wasnt the right thing to do because we have done well recently but to not even feature them as an impact sub takes the piss abit.

Seems unfair to me and i could understand if they are unhappy with the current situation they find themselves in.

  • 251 dannyboy // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:28 PM

@242 I agree with everything you said there

@super mag -i hope he starts cisse , hes on poor form , all i hope is a couple of goals change him as strikers rely on confidence, and tiote seriously needs to stop shooting from everywhere and jumping into challanges like a lunatic, sucha liabillty, also his stupid needless diagonal balls cross field which end up on the others teams chest, only dreamboat should be taking those risks

  • 252 toonLYF // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Marveaux is a class act, only Hatem is better than him on the ball in our squad. I’d be very sad to lose Sylvain, as i feel if he were to get a season injury-free under his belt he could get about 10 assists and 5 goals from attacking midfield, which is a more than decent return from a player we got on the free.

  • 253 89Norcal // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:31 PM

Cisse almost seems to be his own worst enemy.

Everytime I see him mess up a shot or fail to win a ball, his body language is completely negative. He really needs to get his focus mentally.

He’s been playing well on the ball in terms of his first touch and dribbling, so not sure why he’s got a block on goal scoring.

  • 258 Mister Tuff // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:51 PM

Ian Toon – the only slight reservation I have about Owl Heads’ recent interviews is the sudden “love in” with Andy Carroll -with Owl Head saying, if memory serves me correctly, that Newcastle always had a soft spot for Andy -blah blah blah. These subsequent statements are polar opposites to what Owl Head said in his drunken rant remarking as to whether Carroll was worth £30 million to which he replied ““No — he’s worth f*** all.”
Hardly a statement to suggest you still had a soft spot for someone.
So whilst I applaud Owl Head doing his recent interviews I retain an element of suspicion as to the veracity of all his comments.
But I still contend that if AC is not sold to someone else -he will be back at SJP in the summer for a fee in excess of £10 million.

How many bottom half managers have mentioned that pardew has a good squad yet beats his squad.

I think anyone would relish our squad and get us playin quality football. Just look at southamptons new manager and how he has transformed them into an exciting prospect.

Pardew plays like a midtable team, too safe and defencive and if he gets a result its normally by the skin of our teeth.

Do u guys honestly think if we had less injuries to our top players we would be top 6?

  • 264 Tsunki // Feb 12, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Marveaux I could sympathise with more readily if he didn’t blow hot and cold. He seems to need to start games and find his position, bunging him on the left with 10 to go is a sure fire disappearing act. Problem with Pards now is he is stuck in a halfway land between relegation dig-in with the likes of grafters like Jonas, Perch and the like nad starting to form a good attacking side with a mix of his new players and those like Anita and Marveaux who could form the basis of a dynamic midfield but who potentially open us up to attack. The reason for this is the shift in our vulnerability from Defensive Mid and FB’s to our back line. Pardews’ ideal midfield now has two very good subs to game change but our defence remains a weak point with a) in Debuchy who is obviously class but has a few games to go to get into the PL stride imo. Saylor has improved the coordination of our line no end, but Santon is still liable to expose us on the left. I think that’s where ‘safety net’ players like Perch and formerly Jonas (before his RW outings) have come in. I know I go on about this but Santon needs NOT to be part of our midfield imo, not enough product to counter the holes he creates at the back. Flatters to deceive in many ways. Colo scares me a bit as I think he may be showing signs of flying home in his head, so can’t wait to see Mbiwa step in. When the back line is sorted, the jigsaw will be complete!

Cockney…Hard to say really. I’ll try and avoid the obvious by stating that he did indeed manage that last season, but it is hard 🙂 In reality, we got 5th last season mainly as Chelsea were all over the place, but I still would think we would have been deserving of 6th, we finished 9 points ahead of 7th placed Everton, so why would he get 8th at best this season? The EL impact? Quite possibly. I don’t think there would have been much shame in an 8th place finish this season with a more or less fully fit squad and juggling EL, the board, manager and most of the players are new to this new adventure and there were always going to be learning curves. By saying that, I’m sure everyone accepts mistakes have been made, but those have been grossly amplified by the injury list this season, which may not have been terrible all season, but it has been significant for the majority of it to date.

Hopefully as hes said in the press about benarfa and gouffran either side we will beat southampton and that will show him that it takes two creative, skillful/pacey wingers eiher side to get goals in a balanced line up.

For me it’s understandable when we’ve all witnessed how easily our players can drop their heads and then the onslaughts occur. Note I said understandable, not that I think it’s the best idea.

I think he knows the teams weaknesses and is genuinely excited to get all of our best players on that pitch and to finally have that right balance we all speak about. I would put a few ahead of him. I like jonas and think hes a good player but hes slowed down these past couple seasons and looks more like a cm.

Id put obertan there just for the fact that he creates much more than guti. The reason why obertan is frustrating is because he messes up the final ball but he gets far more chances to create and score than jonas which makes it a no brainer.

The other guy i would like to see in that role is amalfitano as i think hes quality and from what iv seen, look a very good technical player.

And then u have marvo. I know everyone likes sayin marvo isnt a wide man and plays better in the middle but thats aload of bull. His original position was LM before he came and has a wicked cross on him. He rathers the middle but isnt going to say no to a spot on the wing in the current sittuation. Hes also great at ghosting past players and picking out killer passes. He has great technical ability that creates for the team.

Id prob put marvo in there as my 1st choice, then ober and then amal.

Ibiza…just read your reply today about Carroll – had to tuck junior in last night.

…if the price is right I would take Carroll back without a doubt 🙂 I think we need that kind of striker – especially if we are going to play 4-2-3-1 with Sissoko as an ACM!

Cockney…I always though Marv would be decent on the wing, but I’ve just never really seen it. Not saying Jonas is better on the wing in an attacking sense, but not really worse, so at least he does add that PL experience and defensive attributes.

I have also said for the majority of this season that Jonas is far better suited to a CM role, but in all honesty, we have many better options for that position.

Obertan I quite like, but he’s pretty ineffective which is weird as he has great pace.

I suppose Jonas has been given the advantage of having lots of games and maybe Obertan / Marv would improve with the same chance.

Saying all of that, I do think Jonas’ days as a guaranteed starter are well and truly numbered, but would expect him to be a big squad player from the bench as he can cover a lot of positions to a decent enough standard.

Guti would be behind marvo obertan in the wingers position for me.

Obertan isnt great but we all know hed do alot more offencively than jonas.

Cockney…Forgot to mention Amal. I have heard he is great technically, but have not seen anything of him at all to be able to comment. We’ve not really been in a position of late to just throw someone out there to see what they can do.

Jesper…Thought I had inadvertently made you run away again 🙂 That’s where I am at with Carroll, for the right price bring him in as an option. Not if he was to be our main ST outlet though, as many have said, we have moved on from that, but that’s not to say there isn’t a time and a place for a Carroll figure.

Cockney…Sorry mate, but we don’t all know Obertan would do more offensively at all. In theory he should, but in reality he rarely does.

  • 287 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 6:47 PM

Indeed hed be my ideal bench warmer for any team.

Workrate, experience, versatility and comfortable on the ball would make him a great player to chuck on and replace marvo, obertan after weve done the damage and hold on to our lead.

Starting him doesnt work and its basically like shutting up shop from the get go.

  • 288 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 12, 2013 at 6:48 PM

Cockney…I think we have an obvious solution then…buy a better winger that all 3 of them 🙂

  • 289 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 6:53 PM

Well statistically obertan has these past couple seasons. Game time to goals and assists.

Guti sits back and invites the opposition.

Obertan would sit on the last man and scare the opposition into doing the opposite, defend. Therefore putting us on the front foot.

Look at plus points of having a pacey technical player who makes runs in behind, rather than a player who can make a tackle and tracks back onn the wing and creates eff all.

  • 290 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 6:55 PM

Id tell my fullback to get forward at every oppotunity if i new guti was on the wing.

No attacking threat what so ever.

Cockney…Has he? To be honest have not checked out his stats, but I guess with Jonas’ one goal and one assist for this season it’s not too hard to beat.

As I have said, I feel as the team gains more confidence Jonas will become a bit part player, but when our attacking players are misfiring and are out of sync as they have been for large parts of this season, it can be suicidal to go on the attack…especially with the known frailties we have had in defense.

Keeping it tight and winning games by small margins worked last season, not this one. I think the team that is being assembled will improve the quality of football we play and our ability to effectively take games to other teams. Whether Pardew should have been doing this regardless is an issue that will probably never die out, but I am hoping that pretty soon it will be a conversation about the past and not the present.

Gotta say the 4231 formation that most teams go with now, put a big workload on the wide men in a 3, Sissoko has almost been playing as a front man, personally would shape us up a bit more 433.

Let Sissoko help out a little bit more in the middle of the park, this would allow Goofy and Benny/Marv/Obertan to play further forward, currently the wide boys are having to do a massive shift, for this reason i imagine Jonas is getting the nod.

Sonner have Cabaye and Tiote sitting a fair bit and let Goofy, Sissoko, and Benny supply the bullets for Cisse. If Sissoko is having an off day bring Marv/Anita on and switch ot round a bit, nice to have options though, but really dont want to see Benny or Goofy too deep all the time, leaves Cisse isolated, similar to Spuds away saturday.

Well Gents, off to eat. Might catch you later, been a pleasure as always.

  • 294 cockneymagpie90 // Feb 12, 2013 at 7:18 PM

Its like man u starting giggs on the wing every game.

Hes good but way past his best and plays better in the cm position. Instead hed rather opt for valencia young nani who will cause havoc down the wing and make teams defend and put them on the back foot.

Pardew would rather someone who will defend in the lw position and create nothing. Thats laughable.

  • 295 Ketsbaia9 // Feb 12, 2013 at 7:34 PM

I’d like to see Marveaux, Ben Arfa and Anita in the team instead of Perch, Gutierrez and Tiote. We’d be far more creative. Marveaux seems to play really well with HBA. The players know that Marveaux should be in the first team. You can tell that Cabaye rates him. I certainly rate him.

  • 296 Troy Stavers // Feb 12, 2013 at 7:58 PM

    @ Kets

Surely you would rather play Sissoko as an attacking midfielder than Marv?
Surely Ben Arfa is a better winger and now Goofy.
That leaves Marv rightfully down the pecking order.
Lets be realistic, he’s had less than a handful of impressive games in the 2 or 3 years he’s been here.
