Magpies’ Star Confident Of Success In The Ukraine

10:47 am, Saturday, February 16th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 30 Comments

It’s always useful to look at the betting on anything – because that’s where the money lies, and usually the bookies get things right – otherwise they wouldn’t be able to make a living and the odds on Metalist winning next Thursday night are 6/7 odds on, and Newcastle are 12/5.

yohan cabaye metalist

Yohan Cabaye - after disputing a decision to disallow a Newcastle goal for offside

As far as the Europa League competition goes Chelsea are favorites to win it at 4-1, and Newcastle are 13th favorites at 28-1, with Metalist Kharkiv are also listed at 28-1.

But Yohan Cabaye thinks that Newcastle are in with a decent chance of progressing, and the fact that Metalist Kharkiv do not have an away goal could work in our favor, as the French International had this to say to the local press today:

“We’re frustrated, but the main thing is that we haven’t conceded a goal.” “We know we have to score away from home – if we score, they have to score twice.” “This is a big thing – they have to win.” “We may only have to score one goal and draw.”

“Of course we’re frustrated as I think we played well.” “We played as a team – we had a few chances to score, and two goals disallowed.” “What can you do? We just need to go again for the second leg.”

“We’re going to have to use our experience if we’re going to go through.” “We all want to go to the next stage. We want to give 100% in this competition.” “We know how important Moussa can be for the team, the group and the club.”

“He’s a big help since he came to the club.” “We hope he can keep his performances going like the rest of us.”

Even if Newcastle play a complete second eleven next Thursday night, because of the upcoming Premier League game against Southampton, it would still be a good team, but whether they could get a score draw or win,  to see us though would seem doubtful at this point.

But of course you never know – especially with Newcastle.

Hmm. It does look difficult. They’re a very competent side and as they’re on their winter break they can really give it their all. We’d have to field a full-strength side and risk it a bit against Southampton.

  • 2 Grafton83 // Feb 16, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Easy money then, they hardly made any real chances that I can remember. I think HBA will be back by then and with our new recruits we will be able to put out a good team, possibly without Tiote or Jonas in it which is a huge bonus although it’ll prob take pards another 3/4 months before he notices they’re not good enough for starting XI right now.

  • 3 Marty-Toon // Feb 16, 2013 at 11:15 AM

    Hmmmm,
Playing a weaker team than we did on Thursday will be difficult as metalist are a decent side but then again we need some players like Sissoko and Cabaye to be fresh against the saints.
Jonas and Tiote can play in Europe with perch and Marveau
Collocini also needs to be rested so it’ll be tough if they do get rested to get anything out of the away game, but knowing Pards he wouldn’t drop Jonas if he played the night before :-)

  • 4 Marty-Toon // Feb 16, 2013 at 11:18 AM

It’d be horrible to put out a strong team and lose it and then take on the saints with a tired team and lose, as they’ve been playing well of late, beat us at their place and have had a good rest.

  • 5 Ginger // Feb 16, 2013 at 11:44 AM

Personally I believe key players need rested for Southampton. So I’d go:

    Europa:

    ——————Elliot———————
    Simpson-Mbiwa-Collocini-Haidara
    ————Bigi———Tiote————-
    Guti———–Marveux——–Obertan
    ——————-Shola———————

Shola will be able to outstrength the opposition. Their defense was tired around the sixty minute mark so bring on Cambell then and I honestly believe he will score a few goals or at least set them up. Tiote,Bigi, and Guti for steal in the middle as Marveux and Obertan aren’t the best of tacklers. Swap Collocini with Taylor at half time, or maybe even play Willo there. I believe we could win with this team. Maybe replace Bigi with Perch as well.

    Against Southampton

    ——————Krul———————
    Debuchy-STaylor-Collocini-Santon-
    ————Cabaye———Anita———-
    Ben-Arfa——Sissoko——–Gouffran
    ——————-Cisse———————-

We’ll probably hammer Southampton with this team. Looks an unbelievable side. Ben Arfa replaces Gutti as he’ll be tired off of the Metalist game, same with Gouffran and Obertan. (They’re both much better players anyway) Southampton are a good passing side, so we’ll need the speed of Anita to intercept passes and to dish passes out as well.

No reason why we can’t win both games.

    Ginger,
Nice team for the saints game.
Would be good idea to give Collo and Sayls a half each to rest them but I’d say he might end up playing Willo as he hasn’t had a look in lately.
    Tough decision time for Percy.

    @5

i’m loving the way your thinking and the team line up against southampton
and i can not fault the 2nd leg team but i think we will be pushed to score with that team (which does show our lack of striking options) maybe he can look at cambell as our inspiration when ameobi comes off after 10 mins though hehe.

  • 8 santonthenewmaldini // Feb 16, 2013 at 12:22 PM

Tiote should play in the 2nd leg and then get rested for the Southampon game where Anita should take his rightful place alongside Cabaye and Sissoko that would be as dynamic a midfield trio as you could find in the premiership

If we are going to drop one of Colo or Taylor for the 2nd leg I would rather it be Taylor as he will be needed to deal with the physical threat of Ricky Lambert who has been quality all season long

I would actually put Perch in at either right back or centre back for Metallica with Mbiwa in the other slot as Colo will be able to play with either of them at the back

The players did not like quick interchange of passes so Marveux should defo play as the No 10 and just glide through them the onus will be on them to attack as the home team which might suit us better actually as there will be more space available I would also play Cisse as he will be angry and I could see him banging a couple in

Grafton83- On Simpson , was your earlier ” He will do just fine at somewhere like Reading” just a random comment ? Having watched us at Reading this season and chatted to a few home fans I sense they are a well run professional club with aspirations. Shaun Cummings played very well against us and they also have Chris Gunter and stephen Kelly who have played at right back I note this season. Simpson is not for me a starting PL player for any club with ambition
because it’s something he personally lacks. He played well in our Championship season as Tunsk, around the grounds, publication from all good bookshops testifies. His career has stood still and he will not be missed in the playing sense by me.

    Ginger // Feb 16, 2013 at 11:44 AM

hallelujah – it’s reassuring to know that there (their/they’re?) is at least one other educated person on this blog who understands the difference between ‘their’, ‘they’re’ and ‘there’.

    Examples:

“Their defense was tired around the sixty minute mark………”

    and

“….same with Gouffran and Obertan. (They’re both much better players anyway)”

See what I did there? ;)

Tunski— Just thought I would promote your book before you write it!

  • 14 Ian Toon // Feb 16, 2013 at 1:01 PM

chris-g— is it just because it’s a football free day for toon fans that were getting the. Fatuous comment! I bet your a member of the Apostrophe Protection Society. Why limit the accessibility to the site for those fans with learning difficulties but whom are as fanatical in their support of Nufc as anyone else. I was taught by my parents that when your good you do not need to tell everyone.

  • 15 breno95 // Feb 16, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Team I would suggest that starts in Ukraine is
    Elliott
    Simpson mbwia Williamson Haidara
    Obertan perch Tiote Jonas
    Ben Arfa (60 mins)
    Shola

    Team at home to Soton
    Krul
    Debuchy mbwia Taylor santon
    Anita Cabaye Sissoko
    Ben Arfa Cisse Gouffran

    Subs
    Elliott
    Collo
    Haidara
    Marveaux
    Tiote
    Shola

chris g @ 12 i agree with you mate, therair are a lot of folk on this blog that just cant spell. lol.

  • 17 Shot Bru // Feb 16, 2013 at 1:28 PM

I say play the strongest team possible….this is our only chance to win a cup this season.

Metallist will be knackered too and a bit rusty with their (chris g) winter break.

No away goals conceded and we play wel on the counter with our shiny new Frenchman.

Stop being so negative Pardew lovers!

  • 18 Marty-Toon // Feb 16, 2013 at 1:34 PM

    Shot bru….
The problem with going all-out against them is that the saints will be fit and relaxed and are a pace filled team,so without giving our best players rest we could be looking at 0points against the saints and that just can’t afford to happen.
Although I agree that I’d love to see us go on in the tournament but there’s a lot of quality teams still in there and the possibility of winning the competition is slim.

  • 19 Shot Bru // Feb 16, 2013 at 1:39 PM

    Marty toon…winning breeds confidence…

Pardew should be bold and go for it…

After all european football is what makes the club attractive for future signings.

  • 20 robin // Feb 16, 2013 at 1:51 PM

It doesn’t matter what team Pardew, puts out we will not win anything with this loser in charge. Once he starts putting Ameobi, the worst striker NUFC have ever had along side the likes of Colocini and his pal Jonas, then the games up. These three are finished in top level football. Pardew plays a French international central defender at right back, rather than drop Colocini Pardews not only useless he is weak!

  • 21 yo-yo // Feb 16, 2013 at 1:53 PM

I really like Gingers’ team selections :)

Now they’re’s one for you Chris !

The double apostrophe drives the grammer polis wild !

  • 22 Marty-Toon // Feb 16, 2013 at 2:25 PM

It breeds confidence that’s true but tired limbs don’t get ya three points ;-)

  • 23 Shot Bru // Feb 16, 2013 at 2:40 PM

C’mon Marty toon…where’s your adventurous spirit gone?

surely it’s up to the manager (Pardew) and his coaching staff to manage the players to play effectively for 1 day a week….

After all he had 5 new players signed for his squad during the January transfer window without loss…

  • 24 Marty-Toon // Feb 16, 2013 at 2:44 PM

My adventurous spirit left the building when i seen our league position all year and some of the players that are allowed to play every week without impressing in any sense :-)

  • 25 Shot Bru // Feb 16, 2013 at 2:49 PM

    Marty Toon :-)

who gives a shizen that we have southampton at the weekend, and two games close.
footy players are all atheletes and should most certainly be able to play two games on the trot every once and a while. i think every teams couple of best players play every game and maybe sit out one or two a season when its against lower league sides and they are still on the bench to be called up when needed.
full strength against them next week and southampton, should destroy them, the same team will hopefully be angry at what happened on thursday night which is some shocking decisions.
tinkering too much with the team will see us lose away, youngens will definitley drop their arses in ukraine.
we have a good chance of winning this in my opinion and dont see why we couldnt, easy draw against metalist, few more games under our belts and we should be looking to be the force in this competition not rejects like chelsea and the rest of the chumpion beleaguered drop outs
    KAPOW!

  • 27 shango87 // Feb 16, 2013 at 8:37 PM

lets be honest, the sooner we get out of the europa league the better. what are the benefits for us? never gonna win it? thursday night games muck up premier league routine, squad isnt deep enough still…. and we should be focussing on staying safe in the league instead of this waste of time compitition!

  • 28 Sav // Feb 17, 2013 at 3:48 AM

The Europa is the only thing we can win, that’s why we need to be in it.
We should have Debouchy, Gouffran and Ben Arfa back on Sunday to freshen up the side and if they are buoyed by a win in Ukraine, there won’t be tired legs. Give Cisse another 70 minutes to bust his goal drought open and give Shola a run out.
Europa is not a distraction, its an incentive and a motivator.
