Are Newcastle Still Interested In This Brazilian?

FC Twente central defender Douglas becomes a free agent in June, when the six years he’s been at FC Twente comes to an end, and we wonder if Newcastle are still interested in this center-back?

Douglas – free agent this summer

Newcastle were certainly interested in the player last summer, and there was a chance that Newcastle would bring him to Tyneside, with reports suggesting Newcastle were in negotiations for the 6’4″ Brazilian.

But nothing came of it,  and Newcastle again started this season with only three experienced center-backs and with Steven Taylor being injured at Reading,  we again paid the price for that – and finally we brought in center-back Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpelier last month.

There was no news on Newcastle being interested in Douglas last month, although it could be that he’s still a target for Newcastle this summer – as a free agent – but that would only happen if Fabricio Coloccini leaves the club to return to Argentina to be with his family.

And Newcastle will need to decide quickly on the Coloccini situation – to ensure we have time to bring in another center-back this summer.

And there may be some questions about the character and temperament of Douglas – and in February of last year Douglas was suspended for six matches by the Dutch FA, after he was sent off against AZ Alkmaar for punching AZ midfielder Pontus Wernbloom, and he pushed match referee Ruud Bossen and then Pontus Wernbloom while he was being escorted off the pitch.

We know Newcastle do look at the characters of the players they are interested in, to ensure they are good professionals and will not upset the excellent team spirit that we have at  the moment at Newcastle.

This player turned 25 last month and he’s played 233 times with 16 goals in the six seasons he’s played at FC Twente – so he doesn’t seem to get injured too much either.

What do you think?
