Are Newcastle Still Interested In This Brazilian?

5:31 am, Sunday, February 17th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 10 Comments

FC Twente central defender Douglas becomes a free agent in June, when the six years he’s been at FC Twente comes to an end, and we wonder if Newcastle are still interested in this center-back?

Douglas – free agent this summer

Newcastle were certainly interested in the player last summer, and there was a chance that Newcastle would bring him to Tyneside, with reports suggesting Newcastle were in negotiations for the 6’4″ Brazilian.

But nothing came of it,  and Newcastle again started this season with only three experienced center-backs and with Steven Taylor being injured at Reading,  we again paid the price for that – and finally we brought in center-back Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpelier last month.

There was no news on Newcastle being interested in Douglas last month, although it could be that he’s still a target for Newcastle this summer – as a free agent – but that would only happen if Fabricio Coloccini leaves the club to return to Argentina to be with his family.

And Newcastle will need to decide quickly on the Coloccini situation – to ensure we have time to bring in another center-back this summer.

And there may be some questions about the character and temperament of Douglas – and in February of last year Douglas was suspended for six matches by the Dutch FA, after he was sent off against AZ Alkmaar for punching AZ midfielder Pontus Wernbloom, and he pushed match referee Ruud Bossen and then Pontus Wernbloom while he was being escorted off the pitch.

We know Newcastle do look at the characters of the players they are interested in, to ensure they are good professionals and will not upset the excellent team spirit that we have at  the moment at Newcastle.

This player turned 25 last month and he’s played 233 times with 16 goals in the six seasons he’s played at FC Twente – so he doesn’t seem to get injured too much either.

What do you think?

Does anyone know what happened to Erik Pieters after he got sent off and punched out that window down the tunnel in his first match back from that ankle injury. I thought he was a sure signing after he came to an watch an earlier match this season.

Douglas would be good alongside Mbiwa as our first choice CB pairing, given that Collo will be offski and Saylor is far too injury prone, spending most of every season on the treatment table.

Maybe we can bring in Mirin as well, as development / back-up with Saylor with Good coming through the ranks.
Unfortunately, poor Willo would be looking for pastures new!! He’s been a loyal player for us, who gives his best effort, every time he’s on the pitch.

Douglas would be a replacement for Williamson but not for Colo.

He’s not good enough to clean Colo’s boots let alone where them.

Plus do we really need a character like Douglas’ at our club now? Not for me. He just always comes across as a bit of a ****.

Let those “bigger clubs than Newcastle” come in for him that he was so sure of last year. T**t.

Watched Douglas a lot last season on ESPN & blogged then that I wasn’t too impressed with him as for being Amazing! no way,& as for those who want to replace Steve Taylor, I just cant believe some people, Steve is at this moment in time one of the best CM defenders in the Premiereship

I reserve my judgement on Douglas? He will soon be free agent i believe but there does,nt seem that many clubs waiting in line to sign him!

You could ask yourself, Why is that? He appears to be over-looked every time by van Gaal too, while the whole point of getting his Dutch National status was so he could become a Dutch International ?

    Not sure about him!

Why not wait until the summer when he’s a free agent? BUT, act quickly and get him signed up as fast as possible, no pussy footing around. Actually Mr Ashley, my advice to you would be to send Llamearse on extended leave in the summer and get on the case yourself, you did a good job in January.
