Massadio Haidara will make his Newcastle United debut tonight at Metalist Kharkiv in the second leg of their Europa League Round of 32 tie – and he’s probably been looking very good in training.
Another surprise is that Danny Simpson comes in at right back and Yanga-Mbiwa goes to center-half with Steven Taylor rested – and Vurnon Anita gets a start in central midfield, and it seems that Cheick Tiote is sick and not available to play tonight.
But Alan Pardew will be able to play almost a fresh back four against Southampton on Sunday with Debuchy, Taylor (S) Coloccini and Davide Santon – so this is a good team selection, given our important game against the Saints on Sunday afternoon.
Massadio Haidara – starts tonight
Dan Gosling makes the squad for the first time since September, after recovering from his knee injury and is on the bench, and Shola Ameobi starts up front, so we have a bit of experience in the starting eleven too.
Top players Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko are part of the starting eleven – and that’s good.
Teams:
Metalist Kharkiv (4-2-3-1): Olexandr Goryainov; Cristian Villagra, Papa Gueye, Marco Torsiglieri, Fininho; Juan Manuel Torres, Edmar; Marlos, Cleiton Xavier, Jose Emesto Sosa (c); Jonathan Cristaldo
Substitutes: Vladimir Disljenkovic, Oleg Shelayev, Andriy Berezovchuk, Oleg Krasnopyorov, Sebastian Blanco, Willian, Jaja
Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Massadio Haïdara; Vurnon Anita, Yohan Cabaye; Papiss Cisse, Moussa Sissoko, Sylvain Marveaux; Shola Ameobi
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, James Perch, Steven Taylor, Dan Gosling, Gael Bigirimana, Jonas Gutierrez, Gabriel Obertan
We need to get through tonight ….. somehow ….

Shola’s a legend but seeing this team and bench makes you realise how badly we need another striker or two in this squad.

Looking forward to seeing haidara and mbiwa in his proper position but it looks like cisse will be on the right…ffs

6 Jonny // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:10 PM
Cisse on the right then
7 ToonDownSouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:10 PM
catchy
He’s on the bench. You’re so obsessed it’s scary.
Not happy with Shola starting though, not one bit. Cisse is dog poo on the wing, and Shola is about as mobile as a cucumber.
8 Mister Tuff // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:11 PM
boater @1 -I agree we do look a bit short up front. Hopefully a couple of quality strikers/attacking midfielders will be bought in the summer.
I think the game may hinge on Shola -hopefully he should get a few flick ons – that Cisse may anticipate.
Also he should be able to collect the high hoofballs and use it productively. (in the last game Cisse was beaten just about every time by defensive headers when the ball was booted upfield).
So the master plan is “Shola as the battering ram” – hope it works. He might get a header from a corner/free kick.
Unexpected team but still upbeat.

Well… there goes my theory out of the window! Hee Hee! Defo not three at the back!
11 ToonDownSouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:13 PM
Last game, Pardew said that Metalists left winger was their best player, whch is why Mbiwa played at RB.
So now we have a right wing due of Simpson and Cisse to counter that? Hmm….
12 MUTINYbyLEMONS // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:13 PM
Would be very upset if Cisse is again pushed to the wing. This might be a 442 with Sissoko and Marveaux on the wings. Looking forward to seeing Haidara play
13 Burkey16 // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:15 PM
any links for the game?
14 toonbrother // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:15 PM
looks like pardumb is playing cisse on the right. and overusing cabaye again. If he gets injured again our season will be in jeopardy. Bigirmana, Anita and Marveaux could have done the job in midfield
15 toonbrother // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:17 PM
@MUTINYbyLEMONS can sissoko play on the wings? if so not a bad formation apart from cabaye being used
16 danuneek // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:17 PM
Strolla and Jonas are both crap! FACT!
17 ToonDownSouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:18 PM
We’ve got a really narrow team actually, which is quite strange.
Even if it is 4-4-2, that’s 4 central midfields..
18 toonicle // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:19 PM
Sooo does that mean Cisse is playing RW again?
19 Munster Mag // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:19 PM
Srely that a 4-4-2 ? I reckon he’s worried about the flanks so has doubled up there . But Marv is no winger …big job for Simpson tonite but I have always said he is a good bread and butter defender. He has to be careful about poor passing though tonite…..Not feeling too great about Shola tbh . Needs to work harder tonight.

21 barkel // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:20 PM
i think its more of a 4411 line up. I reckon Anita will play RM with socks and cabs in the centre Marv on the left and Shola just behind cisse. Hope Simmo puts in a good shift
22 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:20 PM
Good team, very much looking to seeing mbiwa at CB and hairdara playing!
Only change i would of made would be to start jonas or gabby instead of shola, love shola but he cant play 90 mins anymore and is better coming on for the last 20 against tired legs!
Also bit gutted simmo’s playing but given the amount of football stevie’s missed prob a good shout to rest him
2-0 to the toon!
23 ToonDownSouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:20 PM

Football players play about 35 games a season – I don’t see why you seem to think that one extra game is such a risk?
I really don’t understand that. Why not keep Krul, Colo, Sissoko and Cisse on the bench as well if that’s your thinking?
24 toonicle // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:21 PM
Good to see Mbiwa at CB and Haidara starting, rather skeptical of Cisse and Shola starting together unless it’s a 4-4-2, don’t like Cisse on the wing.
25 bollance // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:21 PM
Watch out for a lot of attacking play down the left. Hairdara will be up nd down like a wipit all game.
Simo will sit in at right back all match as Pards said Willian was one of their best players.
If Tiote was not ill then he would be starting ahead of anita. Watch out for Cabaye nullifying anitas contribution. I have not seen anita play well with Cabaye to date. Hopefully today can be the start..

31 santonthenewmaldini // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:28 PM
Its a weird one this just hope we have Haidara protected
Simpson is a good defender if thats all you make him do so if he sits back and just passes to Anita or Colo all game we should be ok its when he goes forward and loses the ball that we get caught out
@Bollance Anita and Cabaye played awesome against Bordeux when we beat them 3 nil but you are right they have not played well in other games but i think that was down to Anita getting used to the league , Cabaye carrying an injury and us playing long balls in the games they played as well now that we are playing better the 2 of them should work in tandem as they are both quality on the ball
Its a big game for Shola he really needs to step up to the plate tonight none of this strolling about doing nothing he needs to bully their backline
32 Novocastrian66 // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:29 PM
Toonicle; no striker on the bench when Shola’s on the bench.
33 Rotonda heights // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:29 PM
Is this not Pardew all over? Just when you think he may be on track, it’s back with hoof ball Shola who we all know can’t do 90 mins, (Campbell would have been better,) Cisse as a winger and ”I can’t attack for toffee” Simmo!!!
Of course I’ll take it all back if we win.
34 VanToonMan // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:29 PM
Hey guys…I agree with all of you that Shola should not be starting. It should be 4-3-3 with Obertan on the right and Cisse up top however…..
I don’t think Pardew is going to play 4-2-3-1 – because he knows Cisse is rubbish on the right plus he loves to play Sissoko off the strikers….so I think he is playing 4-3-1-2…
…which would mean….3 man midfield of
Anita-Cabaye-Marveaux
then Sissoko behind
Cisse-Ameobi
Will be interesting to see how it goes with that
35 toonicle // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:32 PM
Novo- Good witty reply. I got nothing
36 Novocastrian66 // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:32 PM
Pardew on the last post thought we could go far. I think he is right. The Ukraine is miles away.
37 Markaccus // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:32 PM
I’m thinking 442. Anita is fast enough and skillful enough to play on the right, his passing and crossing are also good enough. Espn program just started so we’ll see exactly how its set up.
38 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:34 PM
Rotonda
Not sure who else you’d play at RB though tbf,a very injury prone tayls needs to be rested imo that only leaves simmo and tavernier, and for me tav has shown nothing to suggest he’s a footballer of top level
39 Novocastrian66 // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:36 PM
Toonicle; that’s the problem there is no-one else. Shola has a good European record though to be fair to him. Hopefully he’ll do the biz.
40 Crow59 // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:37 PM
Personally im liking the line up, Simpson obviously has a point to prove and seeing the new boy at lb and giving santon a rest makes sense. Seeing Shola up top against a team poor aerially is always a good option i just hope it pays off. BUT if this means Cisse is pushing wide right then ill be thoroughly pished. NO GUTI what you playing at parnsnip??? he must have started taking pills for his blindness HWTL
41 toonicle // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:37 PM
TADS_ Perch can play RB, although that doesn’t mean much as him and Simmo are pretty equal anyways in that position.
42 toonbrother // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:38 PM
@TDS however small the risk its not a risk worth taking in my humble opinion
43 toonicle // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:38 PM
Novo- That’s why we should have Campbell coming with us, would love to see him get a good 20 minutes or so in some of these Euro games.

45 TheToonKing // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:39 PM
Good team i think.
To be honest i’m not worried about Shola as long as he plays up-front.
They are a team a technical, small players, Shola’s strenght should give the problems and disrupt them + he has a decent scoring record in Europe.
Let’s see. HWTL

He can play RB aye but normally gets slaughtered there, mind you no different to simmo!
The only plus is simmo needs to put himself in the shop window really if he wants to sign for a half decent club so has to really take his chances
48 Ketsbaia9 // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:44 PM
Guarantee they’ll score a goal through a Simmo error. What the hell is he doing back in the team. The games a write-off.
49 Rotonda heights // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:45 PM
TDS
You’re right I have to admit Tav has sadly not lived up to the hype as of yet.
It just means we now have Simmo and Colo neither of whom really want to be here !
Think I would maybe have played Anita RB as they are not an aerial team with someone else coming in to the Midfield / front 3. We need to win and Simmo gives us nothing going forward.
Hope Shola steps up. More action, less chat needed. Have to say Shola and Sammi’s work ethic is shocking.
Can’t afford that tonight

57 JP...from The Rock // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:50 PM
Good strong team, downers Shola and Simpson. Gutierrez has been good these past 3 games.
We need the win and maybe Pardew thinks Shola has more of a chance of scoring than Cisse if he’s out on the wing. Compare Shola’s abysmal scring record to that of Cisse’s and it’s plain obvious we need another ST!
This will be rectified in the summer but the amount of times we have been in this sad position in depending on Shola to score the goals to save us is embarrassing and should never happen again.
Shola should be behind the bench players in an ideal world.
58 davis_toons // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:51 PM
Dont be SUPRISE if we lost this game.
Remember the TIM KURL saves? They are a team that can control the game, control the ball and we will have to sit back and defence once again.
This is our weakness when we sit back. We will leak goals.
Then comes the Long Ball show..
59 Ketsbaia9 // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:53 PM
Alan Pardew looks ill. Looks like he’s been heavily drinking whiskey.
60 JP...from The Rock // Feb 21, 2013 at 5:53 PM
tbf. Shola’s record in europe is not that bad and maybe Pardew has opted to take that on board and possibly improve our chances of scoring as Cisse is not on form-but being out on the wing won’t help him nor his confidence either.
We’ll see what happens, Pardew knows what he’s doing.
2-1 for the Toon!

Simmo not ideal either but better tonight than Southampton game and he’ll be okay as a defender. We all know we need a new CF but we have to use who we’ve got.

also why is haidara no 35 when he was given 19? uefa rules?

bosamuelson i know what you mean!
especially the refereeing is very strange indeed.
maybe they arranged another boring scoreless draw:)
123 bosamuelson // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:39 PM
@NUFCURSED It was the same in the first leg! I can’t put my finger on what it is, maybe just not used to NUFC in Europe!!
124 AmeobiTheMackemSlayer // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:39 PM
Haidara is no. 35 because Ba played for us in the Europa League and was the no. 19. Can’t have more than one no. 19 play for the club in Europe. Same with number 4, 5, 12, 99 you name it
125 TheToonKing // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:41 PM
these european refs are horrible…everything against us…. one finger touch=FOUL

134 bosamuelson // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:45 PM
The ref. is terrible, it is not exactly biased but there is absolutely no flow to the game. The ref blows every 2 or 3 passes.
Terrible terrible game!!!
135 Burkey16 // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:46 PM

143 toonicle // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:49 PM
Lots of free kicks so far, and not a lot of us getting behind them for runs. Pretty good overall though, Haidara looks great so far.
144 pizzicatochan // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:49 PM
TheToonKing, we need to replace all the refs to get the match going. If this does not work out, I think we shouldn’t even weep for the match coz we have done our best to coup with these terrible refs’ standard.
145 ToonDownSouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:49 PM
Wow.
The referee sure does love the sound of that whistle!
146 Ketsbaia9 // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:50 PM
Simpson was at fault for letting them get the header in. Could’ve been 1-0 down. Marveaux has done well defensively today. Sissoko is always a threat. Cisse was unlucky. Shola should’ve switched the play to the left hand side though.
147 toonLYF // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:51 PM
Ref is ruining the flow of the game, it’s an embarrassment on behalf of UEFA for employing them. Absolute shambles.
148 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:52 PM
These are a terrible team like.
They just want our lads booked and sent off. Poor tactics.
My only worry is the ref is falling for it quite a bit. Where going to have to be a little careful with this. I hope the ref catches on.
149 ToonDownSouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Marveaux has done very very well defensively. Fantastic attitude.
150 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:53 PM
Not a bad first half. My only real problem is Cisse on the wing, complete waste of time. Cabaye sitting to deep as well. Also this ref is a joke. Does he know it is a contact sport or what ?
151 NUFC_LEAZES END // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:54 PM
I must say haidairas has been what I expected of him, he’s very solid, tall, strong and possesses a bit of pace and he’s very young, quality signing, m’biwa is looking solid.
I just hope we start the second half like how we did in the first half
152 Markaccus // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:55 PM
Only saw 20 mins of the first half. Seeing highlights of some of the fouls. Shocking. We need a bit of luck. Shola to score the winner!
153 LGFUAD21 // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:55 PM
Having terrible luck with refs lately.
Been decent but we aren’t using our strengths against them.
They want us at this tempo.
Sholas done alright but we loose te,po with two strikers.
Need to be shifting the ball around faster.
This team is not as match fit as us. If we up our tempo with tight short passing we will tire them and eventually unlock. We’ve placed too much focus on matching their structure we are letting them keep their by passing sideways.
Look how ac unlocked Barcelona. By using their pace against their structure.
We need to get Cabaye on the ball more because he is the one capable of those key passes.
154 toonking // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:56 PM
hi all
after the way things have been in europe this year, i’m starting to think myself that the EPL is getting worst every year.
in the next round of the draws i can only see manchester chelsea and possibly newcastle still in europe to represent england.

156 davis_toons // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:57 PM

157 geordieracer1980 // Feb 21, 2013 at 6:59 PM
Good first half. Shola is having a really good game. Cisse not so much. Its a baptism of fire for haidara but he’s coping….just! I think with him being booked, he will be subbed around the hour mark.
We look the better team.
howay the lads!

Agree about the comments about the ref. another prat who thinks that he is the most important person on the pitch.
159 nick_9 // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:00 PM
If anything the officials owe us one after the first leg so I’m shocked at what I’m seeing. The officials behind the goal are a waste of space, too frightened to challenge each others decisions they would rather go along with eachother and pat one another on the back, Clowns.
This team aren’t anything special and we can beat them! .

166 Novocastrian66 // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:05 PM
Jonathan Smith reports: “Metalist Kharkiv became more dangerous as the half wore on but Papiss Cisse wasted the best chance of the half hitting his shot straight at the keeper just before half-time. But after three halves of football without a goal, it would not be a surprise to see this heading for extra-time and possibly the Europa League’s first ever shootout.”

KRUL is my MAN OF THE MATCH!
272 davis_toons // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:51 PM
Almost every cross and shoot have just head straight to Krul
273 TheToonKing // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:52 PM
Haidara was good today…already better the Simpson.
274 ~ Phoenix Warrior Perch~ // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:52 PM
Aye completely agree. Unfortunetaly I don’t see Cisse being benched.
Looks like we are playing a minimum of 6 across the back…
6-4-0?
275 LGFUAD21 // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:52 PM
Need to button down that left flank. Getting skinned on it.
276 JAMSHA // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:52 PM
BLOODY HELL HATE SPURS
277 Jamiemac // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:53 PM
Dont see whats wrong with the subs? Came on to protect the 2 goal lead and they did that.. Whats the issue?
278 davis_toons // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:54 PM
HOw many shoots have we made to WIN this games? Almost Nil..
279 Graeme // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:54 PM

Hooray! Toon marches on!
282 niafron // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:56 PM
So it’s done. Nice job.
283 lucasnufc // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:56 PM
Right proud of that.
284 davis_toons // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:57 PM
Tottenham have got good qualities players and they pass well. They create and they will score goals..just like ManUtd.
We need to do that. In trainning is the best time for the team to gel.
Maux got a chance in the BOX to cross in for both 7 & 9 but he BLAST it into the air.
285 ToonDownSouth // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:57 PM
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
As for those of you trying to criticise the team and Pardew despite winning you can f#ck off. You’re not real fans, so get lost.
If you can’t get enjoyment from that, then you’re one sad sad guy.
286 JAMSHA // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:58 PM
3 shots on target ….. 1:30 am hea more 2 hr to go to watch the repeat n m.already sleepy
287 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:58 PM
So, if I’ve got this right, the Krul booking was for him purposely not kicking it out of the area in order to make the ref make him take it again in order to waste time?!?
288 Marty-Toon // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:58 PM
Sweet StuffIt,didn’t see the match as lying sick but hopefully see highlights somewhere
Howay the lads
289 Markaccus // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:58 PM
Pards made the right call on the subs. Jonas for cisse, 451, harder work to see the game out. Anita looked tired, perch a natural swap. Biggi on for cabs so as not to risk serious injury. We deserved it.
290 niafron // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:59 PM
Got to go lads.
Bonne soirée messieurs.
291 Novocastrian66 // Feb 21, 2013 at 7:59 PM
Jamie. We needed an out. We invited them on with no outlet and Krul saved the day. Delighted we’re through but we made it hard work in the last 15 min.
292 ~ Phoenix Warrior Perch~ // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:00 PM
Right. Back to bed then… still only 4 am over here.
293 achtoon // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:01 PM
Shola is the Boss. All played well. Great tactics. Great subs, job done. The two new defenders look class, santons place looks under pressure.
294 Spuggy // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:03 PM
Shola had a good game scored a great pen. Krul easily motm. Impressed with mbiwa – his balls out of defense are immense. Haidara a good prospect too.
No injuries, some key players rested, Gouffran, saylor, santon, debuchy, HBA and possibly tiote to return – job done.
295 geordiemark // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:04 PM
well done lads everyone done really well considering there was a dodgy ref and they should pack football in and just go to the stage there that theatrical and a dirty football team
296 BDin9 // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:04 PM
Thought we might go out tonight. Glad I’m wrong. Well done lads
297 hugotoon // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:06 PM
Still clueless as to why Pardew would play two out and out strikers in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Obertan/Guti should have played in place of Cisse buuuuuut we won and thats what counts. ALLEZ ALLEZ.
298 Jail for Ashley // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:07 PM
Rotunda,
You completely slag the manager and the team and slate the way we are playing before a ball is even kicked then say you’ll take it back if we win, talk about hedging your bets.
299 Novocastrian66 // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:08 PM
Looking forward to Zenit knocking the bin dippers out.
300 valle // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:09 PM
266… It has to leave the penalty box… Colo could have taken it though
301 Rotonda heights // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:11 PM
Wow !!!
Haven’t always been Pardew’s biggest fan (no really !!) but the way he had Perch and Jonas ready to come on really smelt of team spirit. Nearly had a tear !!
Brilliant that hoof ball now seems a thing of the past and we are getting it down and passing and moving since the French revolution began. 3 wins out of 4.
Krul – out of this world. His best game since Palermo as a teenager
Haidara – awesome debut
M’Biwa – absolute class
Marveaux – hardest I’ve seen him work
Socks – inspirational
Shola – did it for Sir Bobby like he said he would.
302 Constanstine // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:17 PM
Every time Shola scores it mean so much to the team. I’m surprise to say this but he’s already an icon of this club. Despite the fact that we are still going to criticize him from time to time I hope we will stay with us for the long years to come.
303 Ian Toon // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:26 PM
JFA– @ 298 — Spot on . I don’t know about electrical wiring and you don’t know the difference between a philosopher and a psychologist but we both got that call right. Enjoy. Maybe you can explain to me how some people can have any claim on calling themselves fans. Merit. Marks:
Krul. 8
Simpson. 6
Yanga. 8
Coloccini. 7
Haidara. 7
Anita. 6
Cabaye 7
Sissoko 7
Marveaux 6
Shola 7
Cisse 5
304 olivant // Feb 21, 2013 at 8:26 PM
It is always the same. When you think Shola is Down and out, he always gets a goal. Often a good one, and he is a great penalty taker. By the way Hulk made a goal against Liverpool. Huge Carragher mistake
305 Owldman // Feb 22, 2013 at 6:51 AM
Mtalist should have finished the game with 9 men one sent off for the elbow in the face on M’Bwia the other the keeper when he brought down Sissoko for the penalty he was the last man , but then that official on the goal line may as well not been there, for what good he did
