Krul Has Ankle Strain But Big Chance For Rob Elliot

10:15 am, Sunday, February 24th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

Rob Elliot will be in goal today for Newcastle united as we take on Southampton and Tim Krul will miss the game after a scan showed that he has a strain in his damaged ankle, but he will see a specialist tomorrow, and we should then get a better prognosis of the injury.

rob elliot man united 2-1

Rob Elliot – gets a big chance today

That should include how long Tim could be out – and initial estimates have said five weeks, but hopefully it will be less than that.

Krul injured his ankle in the 1-0 win over Metalist Kharkiv in the Europa League on Thursday night, and he is wisely sitting out today’s game, until the medics know what the state of his ankle injury is.

This is what Alan Pardew had to say on the Newcastle web-site about the situation.

“It’s an issue that’s not quite clear yet.” “On Monday we’ll probably know a little bit more.” “The scan’s showing that he’s got a strain in there and we need to protect him, so he definitely won’t play this weekend.”

“How long he’s out for, I don’t know really but one door closes and one opens and for Robbie, it’s a much-deserved door because he’s really done terrific on the training ground here and played some Europa League games earlier in the season and cemented his place in the hearts of our fans.”

“They know he’s good enough and now there’s an opportunity for him.”

It will be Elliot’s Premier League debut, after he signed on at Newcastle from Charlton Athletic on August 30th of 2011, ย for a nominal fee.

The good thing for Rob today is that he will have a very solid back four in front of him, and hopefully Newcastle can get all 3 points and even anohter clean sheet – which would be the third in a row.

Comments welcome.

We have to get Mโ€™Biwa in as a starter even if it means playing 3 x CBs with a sweeper and wing backs or even as a DM. He has that vital, vital pace.

    Colo / Saylor
    Santon / Haidara

    Anita / Tiote

    Benny / Obertan

  • 2 Graeme // Feb 24, 2013 at 10:18 AM

It would be good to see him make an impressive start to his first league by keeping a clean sheet against Saints.

I can see us scoring at their end – just need to stop them scoring and we have 3 points!! Easy lol

sounds like Krul could have ligament damage …Good chance for Elliot….lets see what he is made of.

  • 4 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 24, 2013 at 10:27 AM

Graeme…That does sound easy, why has no one put it like that before? Revolutionary stuff mate ๐Ÿ™‚

  • 5 Toonbyblood // Feb 24, 2013 at 10:30 AM

I think Southhampton will come at us early… Feel comfortable we can contain them. And if we get a goal early will go on and win comfortably.

Otherwise I think it will end up being an even game. And will be lucky to get the win.

  • 6 IITianToon // Feb 24, 2013 at 10:31 AM

Tell you what, our team composition is brilliantly suited to a 3-5-2, however thats definitely much much outside Pards comfort zone.
With Mbiwa, Taylor and Colo; Debs Santon ideal wing backs; Tiote holding with Cabaye and Sissoko in front; and Gouffy either alongside or (preferably) just tucked behind Cisse.

  • 7 Dennis Twice // Feb 24, 2013 at 10:34 AM

    !!! I saw it, Cisse`s gonna make 3goals today!!! I saw it!

So Krul the Glasskeeper is our up to 5 weeks?

…when I watched the game I thought to myself don’t over do it Krul there was only minor contact (maybe he’s just made of glass)

So are we in for the the same lineup as always taking injuries into consideration or are Pards feeling brave today? ๐Ÿ˜€

  • 13 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:03 AM

Jesper…Will know a lot more about Krul tomorrow, so 5 weeks not confirmed…yet.

I think we’ll see a similar line up to the Villa, Chelsea and Spurs games tbh. That is unless Shola has nicked a starting spot, nah, surely not…

  • 14 Dennis Twice // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:09 AM

If we can make more goals than Saints i think we can win?

  • 15 Toonboy_84 // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:12 AM

Is the game televised today does anyone know?

  • 16 martoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:16 AM

I’m surprised Krul has to wait until Monday to see a specialist – surely with all the money in football they cold have afforded one before then!

  • 17 ToonDownSouth // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:22 AM

In the EL Elliott looked a very good shot stopper, but every goal keeper at this level should be.

It’s Krul’s commanding presence from crossed and set pieces that we’ll seriously miss, especially with big Ricky Lambert against us.

Ibiza…hope Krul the Glasskeeper will be back sooner rather than later ๐Ÿ˜‰

…the team will definitely be the same as the last 4 games. Shola for a starting place ๐Ÿ˜€ you just made me smile there and spil my coffee lol

    Toon252…Looks decent.

TDS…I think Elliot will cope just fine, looks calm and composed when he has played before.

  • 23 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Jesper…People laughed the other day when Shola started. Get ready for him to start all of our remaining fixtures and finish as the leagues top scorer.

  • 24 ToonDownSouth // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:40 AM

I guess some people are just born to be unpleasant cocks.

He never faced any sort of ariel barrage when he’s played before though. Like I said, I have every faith in him coping well with shots, but I’ve yet to see him claim the ball in the air like Krul does.

To be faith, that could be because he hasn’t had the chance to – but it does concern me, especially with Stoke coming up.

Also, tuned in to MOTD last night – Stoke have scored 58% of their goals from set pieces! 58%! That’s crazy!

  • 25 ToonDownSouth // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:41 AM

    Faith? Hmm, fair*.

  • 26 santonthenewmaldini // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:42 AM

Always get a stream on it every week to watch the Toon!!

Think we will win 2 – 1 same as usual we will score 2 goals and then it will be backs against the wall for 30 minutes!!!Would you have it any other way?!!?

  • 27 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:42 AM

Ibiza…Shola’s got a lot of catchimg up to do ๐Ÿ˜‰

But maybe he can catch Cisse lol

  • 28 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:43 AM

TDS…We can’t all be wonderful, can we?

Very true, we have yet to see him deal with the various situations that PL football can bring. All I was saying really is that so far he’s dealt with challenges that have come his way, so I’m more confident than not. Would always prefer Krul in goal though, that’s a given.

    What’s our percentage? 0%? That’s also crazy.

  • 29 beddersmag // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:43 AM

Whatch the krul injury replay again. Bent his ankle sideways. Doesnt look much but those ones hurt and need proper recovery time or become long term problems. No reason to think hes made of glass, he also played on ut it will have been stiff next day. Goufran came off which an injury most sunday league players would continue with- a cut on the shin, and no-one said anything about that. Strange

  • 30 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:45 AM

Jesper…You seem to lack faith in Shola, what in his career has given you reason to doubt? ๐Ÿ™‚

Talk about a confidence killer, having Shola outscore you…come on Cisse, best starting getting some more goals.

Santon…Must be really boring constantly dominating and beating the opposition by 3+ goals ๐Ÿ™‚

  • 32 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Ive been very impressed when seeing elliot this season, not so much last season but he’s looked good this season
As for commanding the box, cant say ive seen much of him before he joined but the lower leagues are very physical so his experience there should help him with that!
But have to say TDS, disagree that krul commands the area, crosses n set piece’s, for me, have been a massive weak point in his game this season, well the whole defence tbf.
The amount of corners, set pieces krul comes to collect and misses is pretty bad, normally get away with it he missed a sitter vs spuds and almost gifted them goal
Krul is a great shot stopper but fir me there are alot of areas of his game that need improving before he becomes a top top keeper, commanding the box and distribution being the main 2 for me

  • 33 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 24, 2013 at 11:58 AM

Behave mate, a cut he got through walker PIERCING his shin pad! Do you have any idea of the impact to do that, and on his standing leg! He was f uking lucky he didnt have his leg broken mate, they also said it was a very deep puncture, bit more than the scratch your making it out to be

  • 35 Shane // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:01 PM

    ยฃ10 @ 40/1 Santon 1st goal scorer.
    ยฃ10 @ 40/1 Santon last goal scorer.
    ยฃ10 @ 14/1 Santon to score anytime.
ยฃ10 @ 135/1 Newcastle to win 1-0, Santon only goal scorer.

    Come onnnn. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • 36 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Shane…So you hoping for a 1-0 win with Santon scoring then? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Tads…Good point on the lower league experience, should be used to a physical game.

Also agree that Krul has some areas of his game that need work, but I still think he is a great keeper.

  • 37 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:09 PM

Aye no doubting that krul is a great keeper, we’d be a worse side without him over the last couple of seasons, but still think he has alot to improve on, but thats the one thing the toon always seem to have is top top keepers on the books!

  • 38 Shane // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Thank gawd its not a broken Ankle?

If its his Ankle Bands then it will three to four weeks tops?

Trust me i work in a hospital, he will have to rest it for at least a few weeks though and take it easy after that?

If Elliot comes in today and does well then i would tag him as the no2 keeper?

Think we need to sign someone else in the Summer though, me-thinks?

  • 43 JC148 // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:16 PM

Might Curtis Good get a few minutes at Wembley today? Is he in the squad?

  • 44 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:17 PM

JC…No idea mate. Be great for him if he is though.

ExPat…I suppose it all depends on how Alnwick is progressing. If Elliot is No.2 and Alnwick isn’t far off then I’d imagine we’re okay in the GK department.

  • 45 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:18 PM

  • 49 tequilamag // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:29 PM

Newexpat, he was manager for a while in the 80s, brought on Gazza as a player. I think he is a scout for Norwich at the moment.

  • 50 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:30 PM

No way went through his pad dont be silly. You seen how small the pads are that the pros wear. It will have just missed the pad. Trust me mate i have had two cuts on my shin where you could see the bone while wearing pads. Its because the skin is mm thick on the shin bone. Both times i played on and didnt stop playing. And im not unique seen it loads of times. In fact on of my mates never really noticed until i told him i could see the bone and he starting moaning. Ha ha still played on after we ribbed him. Team should be strong enough to do the job and the bench looks pretty healthy too. I’m sure it’s not everyone else pick, but with a little perspective, it’s not like it’s a team that should get ripped to shreds or anything.

Not happy about tiote strolling back into the team in all honesty, thought pardew said people would start getting dropped etc?
Sorry but tiote is a liability who’s inclusion almost changes the whole mood of the game!
Anything other than a 100% mistake free and bookings free afternoon from him then pardew has failed in justifying starting him infront of anita/perch even MYM based on his europa showing

  • 63 ~ Phoenix Warrior Perch~ // Feb 24, 2013 at 12:47 PM

I will never understand how a player who has under performed for the majority of the season, is a liability in terms of cards, gets ahead of two players who are in form, do not get in the book as often and are just as effective in the team.

Apart from Tiote starting, thats probably our best line up. Would rather Goofy down the middle and Marv/obertan on the wings in place of Cisse and either Perch or Anita in place of Tiote.
