Mathieu Debuchy Was Absolutely Magnificent – Pardew

5:48 pm, Sunday, February 24th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 55 Comments

Alan Pardew was very happy with the performance of his side this afternoon, when the lads beat a good Southampton side 4-2

alan pardew happy saintsa

A happy looking Alan Pardew after the win today

It was the first time Newcastle had scored four goals all season, and it was the first win by more than one goal in the league by Newcastle since we hammered a 10 man Wigan side 3-0 on December 3rd.

Alan Pardew was delighted to beat one of his former clubs, and he had this to say to Sky Sports after the game:

“The French players were terrific.” “The English players were very good, too. But the new arrivals have put us in good shape.

“Six weeks ago we certainly wouldn’t have beaten Southampton. But now we look like a different team.”

“Debuchy was absolutely magnificent.” “That is why we tracked him for so long, as we didn’t want to miss out on a talent like that.”

Both Mathieu Debuchy and Cheick Tiote had excellent games today, and Alan Pardew now has a lot of players challenging for starting positions in the first team – which is exactly what we need.

And of course just an absolutely fabulous goal from Papiss Cisse today, and that will do his confidence a lot of good, because Papiss has been playing well – and has a great understanding developing with Moussa Sissoko.

Things in the Newcastle garden are starting to look very good at the moment with four wins in the last six games, since the new French contingent arrived on Tyneside last month.

I think everyone played well today apart from Santon who needs to realize he is a defender first and foremost, an attacker second. The good thing is we have Haidara breathing down his neck so he knows that another performance like that he could find himself benched. Also I have been critical of Tiote lately but was pleasantly surprised with his performance today and he looked back to his best.

  • 2 Toonacious T // Feb 24, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Great boost for Cisse’s confidence. Tiote looking more like the player we watched last season. MYM looks solid. Elliot looking a good stand in for Krul and Debuchey looking world class. Swansea next up will be alot tougher but u feel we have a chance against most teams now.HWTL

So Sammy is to be shipped out to Boro on loan.

    Good move by the club.

I’d like to see our other young lads sent out aswell. Ferguson inparticular

    toonarmydownsouth // Feb 24, 2013 at 5:55 PM

    Poor poor bradford!
Great experience for curtis good though he’s done himself proud with this loan stint
And good on you wayne routledge great to see an ex player doing well, shame we thought obertan was an upgrade on him!

You missed me off that list pal, hindsights great eh, but lets be honest on his recent performances tiote didnt deserve that starting place, he’s been awful this season
I said to WWYCD he owed us a performance and fair play he put a great one in, still with a hideous challenge thrown in on rodriguez, but still a great game for him so fair play to him lets hope he’s found his form now and keeps it going to the end of the season

Elliot was great today brilliant performance from him great distribution and some great takes and didnt let himself get bullied
again was fantastic best performance in a toon shirt so far!
i dont think was too good today think he got done for pace and positioning for both goals
    thought was okay
though done really well once he settled never easy coming on mid game at CB but showed his class, this lad needs to be playing!
not his best game needs to get back so much quicker if he’s going to attack as much as he does
Best game this season, started to look like tiote again! Still had a nasty challenge on rodriguez but solid display
Great game as always cracking pen but poor corners today
This bloke is a beast great great great game…..again!
Looks much more confident on the right, plays well with debs and drifts in and plays the ball well
So so impressed with this lad gets better every game he’s everywhere, defends, attacks, plays midfield what a cracking little player!
Great goal lets hope it boosts his confidence, on the whole though he needs to stop fluffing these simple 4-6 yard sitters he maybe holding the ball up well yadda yadda, but he’s our number 9 theres only one thing i care about him doing and thats putting the ball in the net, from an onside position!

Swansea will be real tough, especially that they’ve won the cup today, will have a lot of confidence coming into the game

  • 7 northernirishtoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 5:57 PM

I personally thought santon had a good game. Think your being a bit harsh there. I think he def goes missing at times but that’s only cos he is so attack minded.

  • 8 Ewokshatemackems // Feb 24, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Lets hope the swans are on the p!ss all week

  • 9 Jonas's better than Messi // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:02 PM

Can’t wait to see Hatem in for Jonas, that will be quite a team.

  • 10 yo-yo // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:02 PM

But they got dumped by the bindippers despite playing some squad players – and we won there well last season so they are not invincible. Southampton have been on a roll recently – they were no pushover.

Another three wins and a draw for 40 pts and then just go for it.

  • 11 santonthenewmaldini // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:04 PM

    @Big Pappa Cisse

Santon only really made one error which was in the 2nd goal but then Taylor should have marked Lambert better when we expect Santon to go forward as much we have to expect he will get caught out sometimes but he creates space for others such as Sissoko and Gouffran to exploit

His run and piece of skill to get to they byline and put it in to the danger area for the 4th goal was class

Personally I would love to see him moved to the wing with Haidara behind him as he is too good at attacking to be a defender its a bit of a waste!!!

But what a game that was end to end entertainment at its best that all I ever want as a Toon fan is to get excited watching our team in free flow just got to hope the injury list does not start to increase again….

Sammy away to Boro?Good move that might mean we have 1st option on some of their young players we should strike up a deal with them to loan our young players every season

Also Medhi Abeid with 2 assists in a week for St Johnstone ?Maybe he will fulfill his potential eh Kets?

  • 12 county down magpie // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:04 PM

Great end to a fantastic week!!! We can only kick on from this today as imo this will be more of a boost for the lads than beating mentalist. One thing really grinds my gears tho, before the match the blog wad a wondrously optimistic and dare I say pleasant place…..until their goal brought out the inevitable trolls that like to fill this place on matchday. All the usual, Pardews $hit, Sholas $hit, we’re gonna get hammered, team selection is wrong etc. If you are true fans you’ll stick by the team AND manager and show the support we are supposedly famous for. Some of those trolls psrents woulda been better off playing with themselves instead of bringing such a miserable cnut into the world!!

Anyway, onwards and upwards this team if kept together can do great things

  • 13 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:05 PM

    @ northernirish

That is the point though. He goes missing and we concede from the left hand side. It would be fine if he created more but he only has one assist to my knowledge this season (Chelsea home). I am not saying he should not get forward but when he does he needs to get straight back. I know he is still young and very raw but he needs to know when to bomb on and when to stay where he is. Debuchy had the perfect game today for a full back, got forward a lot (won a penalty) and was strong in the tackle and I think Santon could learn from him.

  • 14 OhSholaAmeobi // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:06 PM

We do have Ben Arfa back for Swansea but a draw wouldn’t be bad, as long as we can beat Wigan and Stoke

  • 15 northernirishtoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:09 PM

    Big papiss cisse

Santon can definitely learning from debuchy after all he is still only learning his trade

Remember santon has 7 years on debuchy

  • 16 Cisse09 // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:11 PM

Big papi* I wouldn’t be too harsh on Santon! How many games this season has he been our best player! Ok he was not back for the goal but cum on! We are all human one mistake doesn’t mean u lose ur place! Don’t just look to criticise.. You could say mbwia was at fault too plus the keeper could of done better. We won chill out! :)

  • 17 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:12 PM

Don’t get me wrong I love Santon and I have never bashed him before its just a worry that is all :)

  • 18 Transfer Sage // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:17 PM

    Big pappa

I know why you mean with santon. He gets forward well but struggles getting back at times.

Either he needs to be more disciplined or the team need to have a plan to deal with it, a dm sits a bit more to provide more cover.

I think, like you say, with time he will know when to make smarter runs and be more effective. But your also right haidara puts pressure on him so he knows he has to keep working on both aspects of his game.

He needs to work on his left foot a lot more, decent delivery on it but seems reluctant to use it and cuts in a bit too much. It would be ok but gouffran cuts inside mainly too which is good as we need options on the box but leaves us lacking a lot of genuine width out wide.

But a you say, he’s young and this will all come with time. He has debuchy to help him progress as well as getting advice when in the Italy squad again so I’m sure he will come on leaps and bounds over the next few years

  • 19 Transfer Sage // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:20 PM

In general in delighted with the win.

We played some nice stuff, Southampton always were going to have a good spell as they play good football but we dealt with it and came back strongly each time.

Can’t fault anyone too much today, a few minor errors here an there but that’s expected in a prem league game against good players.

Elliott was amazing I thought, not as good as krul in goal but his distribution is a million times better. That’s the big area Tim needs to work on.

  • 20 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:23 PM

I dislike it when one player or a manager gets singled out. Or gets grief because of poor form.

Form comes and goes with every footballer. There is no point giving them stick.

In Tiotes case. He is the best defensive mid at the club and one of the best in the league. He has by far the most ability and has the best all round game at NUFC by a mile. We seen that today.

Its gutting for the lads to be dropped but you have to play your best 11 when available. None of who stepped in put in world class performances they did well and did a job that is all.

Not one Toon fan would have Ben Arfa out the first eleven because Obertan or Jonas was doing well. Why? Because Ben Arfa is better and has more ability in his bag.

The same goes with Tiote. He is the best we have.

You have to field your best eleven when available.

  • 21 nico // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:23 PM

I was at the game as usual today. Thought it was a decent performance today without being outstanding. Southampton are a good side, kept the ball very well, defending was average though. A couple of moments of class won us the game. Goufran on the left, Debuchy on the right and that wonder goal from Cisse WOW

  • 22 Cisse09 // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:24 PM

Hdavid23* ye they won but no disrespect to bradford getting to the final, beating some top teams, but it wasn’t much of a game, lmao! Think they might start off like the saints did today .. Again they are a quality side attacking wise. And very much underrated! Away it will b tricky but were on a role! Our pace is biblical! Sissoko and Yoan can run all day. I recon we can maybe 3-1. Plus they will no doubt be on the ale for most the week aha!

  • 23 Spreadthetoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:25 PM

you cannot expect players to be their best game in game out all the time. I think the important thing is cos’ we have a much better squad/ depth that we have other players in the team that can off-set n that. Agreed Saylor did not have a brill one….but that said its a team sport and the main thing is we got 3 pts and thats what we need every week! 3pts!!
In the summer we can look to the future but for now lets just be happy with the players giving their heart week in week out even if some of ’em are past their peak eg. Jonas :)

  • 24 Marty-Toon // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:25 PM

Santon does get caught at times high up the field,so as a team that should be pointed out that when he’s on a run up front that someone pulls in to cover-pretty normal for a defensive midfielder to hold there and pull out wide or fill in for the CB as he goes wide.
If santon becomes more cautious then we won’t get the attacking play that he’s so good at.
Great display today lads, watched the game with a saints fan at his place.
Poor first goal to give away but we played nice stuff today and you could see there’d be goals.
We look strong throughout the field and bench which is a nice change.
Very high level of quality throughout the team.
Good with 3 points, looking upwards now.
    Gouffran and Debuchy were brilliant
    Lovin it

  • 25 Marty-Toon // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Sammy going out on loan should be good for him, hope he gets game time and comes back a better team player

  • 26 Ewokshatemackems // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:30 PM

A lot of people seem to forget that Santon’s obviously been given licence to push on. It works offensively, so we should stick with it and have a system in place to cover.

Either that or tell him that Maldini never got caught out of position. That’ll get him tracking back pretty quick

  • 27 Spreadthetoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:31 PM

Disagree, you need to pick players who are playing with good form. I think Tiote had a good ACON hence his inclusion back in the 1st team. But you should always pick your best players and that is done on form not by name….surely.

As for using Jonas as an example re: HBA….Jonas is no longer an effective offensive player and that has been shown all season! In fact AP has played Jonas because “his name” and not necessarily his form. You should pick players by their form. Agree Tiote was immense today and probably his best performance this season.

  • 28 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:32 PM

People say Everton have the best left side in the premier league with Baines and Pienarr, I think we have potentially the best right side. If Debuchy plays like that and with HBA back in full flow :) Mouth watering.

  • 29 hdavid23 // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:33 PM

yeah, they might celebrate a bit in the coming days lol… was kinda hoping Bradford would beat them tho, would’ve been great for Good

  • 30 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:37 PM

You have to get your best players on the pitch though, to get their form back they need to be played. They need to regain that confidence. And that is what we have seen. He has been edged in and giving time and its worked.

Pardew has done that brilliantly with Tiote and now we are reaping the benefits. No disrespect to Perch or Anita, but they couldn’t do what Tiote did today. Pardew deserves credit for this.

    Tiote’s back.

  • 31 darrenfletcher88 // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:39 PM

That quote from pardew that edd wrote was wrong, if your going to do somthing do it correct!!

  • 32 achtoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:41 PM

If we continue this form I’m thinking 54 points for the season

  • 33 tequilamag // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:41 PM

    FT88 correctly

  • 34 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:41 PM

    @ Darren

Make your own blog then. I’m sure you would never make a mistake

  • 35 darrenfletcher88 // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:43 PM

Just saying, that’s how press get things wrong, hear one thing and write another, Ben Arfa interview, etc etc!!

  • 36 Spreadthetoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:45 PM

The reality is that both Perch and Anita have been immense in recent games. All 3 are different players and offer different things but whilst Tiote is on paper the better player he or any other players within our squad should only be selected on their form. Its the competition that we now have that is keeping every player on their toes….that’s the most important thing. Each player must have a fair chance of getting into the 1st team otherwise it demotivates players / effects morale. AP is beginning to rotate effectively with a larger squad and we are beginning to see the real benefits hence and transformation in our form. I look forward to our fixtures looking forward as we are playing better as a team, based on form!

  • 37 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:47 PM

    @ Darren

Yeah but its the way you say it. Any normal person would have said something like

“hey Ed love the blog, just to point out the quote you have wrote is wrong”

NUFC have just gone above the Mackems and we have HBA coming back next week, just enjoy it 😉

  • 38 WWYCD // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Another win?! Pardew out! Going nowhere! Not good enough!

  • 39 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:52 PM

    And spread,

In regards to Jonas & Obertan,

I was using them as an example as to say you wouldn’t play them over Ben Arfa in that position IF they were doing well and he was fit to play.

Exactly the same would happen. Ben Arfa would be edged in and he would stake his claim once again because he has more ability and is the better player in that particular role. Tiote is no different. His form and ability will show and shine through eventually.

To get your absolute best out on the field and playing well with comfidence they have to be played is all im saying. Until Anita and Perch out do him ability wise and rise upto what he can do and show it on a regular basis he won’t be dropped and will always be first choice when available.

Work for me now, catch you’s later!

Does anyone know the link to watch the game again? I can’t remember it. Thanks

  • 41 Toon-Prodigy // Feb 24, 2013 at 6:55 PM

I wouldn’t say they have been immence mind. They have did ok and played alright. I like the players in question but I understand Pardews thinking on the scenario at hand.

Sorry mate, I got to run. Catch ya soon.

    Have a pleasant evening folks!

  • 42 WWYCD // Feb 24, 2013 at 7:00 PM

Just out of curiosity I have heard a lot about how Pardew has a great first season then a terrible second season so what happens historically in his third season?

  • 43 Spreadthetoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 7:03 PM

    Toon Prodigy
On paper Tiote and HBA will always get into the 1st team…..but you also need to take account of their form and fitness….that’s my point.
Perch was instrumental in the last couple of games IMO, and deserves the credit. IF Tiote plays like he did today then he should retain his berth but only on the basis that he brings he’s “A” game otherwise there are others who have the ability….Bigi, Anita, Perch

  • 44 Spreadthetoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 7:04 PM

LOL not sure if AP has ever seen a 3rd season?!!

  • 45 Sheikh MagToon // Feb 24, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Game changed on a fantastic substitution today. They took off Luke Shaw who was very good, albeit carrying a yellow card, and brought on Fox who then proceeded to gift us a penalty then an own goal (he hit clearance onto Hooieveld. We need to be much more clinical next season as this should have been a simple victory against a hard working but very limited side. We cannot concede simple goals like this. Back to the Entertainers era but that didn’t win us anything.

wwwycd @ 42 good question the answer is, no one knows coz he always gets sacked before then . so NUFC could go down as the first club that pardew has lasted a third year . wow.

  • 48 aidantoon // Feb 24, 2013 at 7:17 PM

Can you imagine 4 top players added to this squad in the summer and all our top players stay which they will unless they offer daft money! I really think we can challenge the top 4 next season. How many other teams can say that?
    Good times ahead I feel.
By the way how much is sissoko worth now? 30 million?

  • 49 Ewokshatemackems // Feb 24, 2013 at 7:18 PM

That quote from darrenfletcher is wrong. Should be on a manc scum site

  • 50 darrenfletcher88 // Feb 24, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Hey just stating a fact!! I love the blog and am on here every day, but the fella isn’t god, he makes mistakes like the rest of us. Just that’s one off my pet hates, if u are going to quote someone write the correct thing. If that’s edd or the next man. We all kicked off when we read the Ben Arfa interview didn’t we?? Anyways never mind!!!

  • 51 beefman13 // Feb 24, 2013 at 7:37 PM

Anyway it was a good three points against a decent southmpton, not that much in the game, shame about the colo injury, mbiwa though is a really good kid, debuchy cabaye sissoko elliot and to be fair gouffy and tiote btoh worked very hard as well, santon was ok, great strike by cisse to boot.

Please benny come back very soon, i personally cant believe we still play one up top at home, its obvious how much the points mean to the club by the way we set up.

Today at 3-2 we all could have predicted what was going to happen regarding the substitution, it worked with the deflected goal, we did not create anything else, including not one cross from our beloved gutierrez(terrible from a wide player but im used to the huff and puff, why not play Mo Farrah if we want someone to run up and down the pitch for 90 mins creating zilch.

    ben arfa

That is a dream of a toon team, b magic at home especially, even marv or anita mixed in there somewhere would not in any way weaken it IMO.

You have to take into account that Santon has played almost every minute of every games. A dip in form has to be expected now and again

  • 54 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Feb 25, 2013 at 8:41 AM

We are One Striker and maybe one Cental Defender away from being a top four team? This i reallly do believs!

To those of you who are on here slating Santon, SHAME ON YOU!

He has played every minute of every game this season, in some of them he was our best player on the park? When Italy play an International he is one of the first names in their Squad! He does,nt deserve any criticism on here whatsoever!
If it was up to me, i would play Hadeira behind him at Left Back and play him as an out and out Left winger!
    Lay off Him Now!

Getting back to Transfers, i watched highlights of Heracles Almelo against Vitesse yesterday evening, 3-5, with a hatrick for Wilfred Boney. Comments afterwards both from commentary and the player himself mainly about a move in a few weeks tp CSK Moscow? The Russian Transfer Window is still apparently open? Any thoughts we had of getting Boney are over if this is true?

My preference still goes out to van Wolfswinkel who is sat on the bench in Lissabon mostly and wants to leave there! Would,nt come cheap but would be a superb striking partner for Cisse?

Meanwhile lets just enjoy the win yesterday, and stop the moaning on here, eh ! Some people are just never ever satisfied?

  • 55 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Feb 25, 2013 at 8:47 AM

    Beefy @ 51:

I,ve an idea Collo will be still released in the Summer to go back to Argentina? Mbiwa was bought to replace him !

Read on another thread this morning we are after one of Feyenoords defenders? Under 21 Dutch International! Not too sure if there is any truth in it though?
