Hatem Ben Arfa starts tonight in Moscow, and it’s his first appearance for Newcastle since he played ion early December at Fulham.
As expected Danny Simpson and Massadio Haidara are the two full backs and James Perch is also in the starting line-up tonight – and it seems he’s at center-back with Yanga-Mbia which is a big surprise, and Steven Taylor is on the bench.
Vernon Anita is in defensive midfield, and Gabby Obertan gets a rare start in the Newcastle side.
With both Shola Ameobi and Adam Campbell on the bench it seems that Hatem Ben Arfa could be the lone striker tonight, which is a little bit of a surprise.
It’s an interesting starting eleven

wow…Santon, Saylor AND Tiote all on the bench…
Pardew doesn’t have any respect for their front line at all apparently.
2 roshan MAGPIE // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:04 PM
lads I wanted to ask this question for all of you guys this is not related to the matchwho is better defender titus bramble or Williamson
3 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:04 PM
Hmmmmm. Interesting lineup
4 roshan MAGPIE // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:05 PM
I think apart from zirkhov there defense must be slow
5 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:05 PM
Decent line up. Being cautious with Taylor and Shola.
I suppose the only worry could be Benny, but I can’t imagine Pardew would risk him again (he says ever hopeful).
6 Dagwoodz // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:06 PM
@Roshan
I think Williamson gives 1000000% more effort than Bramble ever did or will give. Bramble is more physically talented, with no drive and no brain.
In the end, I think it’s a wash, though I’d prefer to have someone who WANTS to play hard for me rather than someone who doesn’t have the intelligence to know how to put one foot in front of the other.
7 DevonMag // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:06 PM
Intriguing line up… we’re definitely having a go at em. Taylor not starting is fine by me – he needs to be wrapped up in cotton wool for the rest of the season, particularly with Colo now out. Hatem/Mousa false no 9? Very happy Gabby is starting as let’s face it the lad is made for astro-turf – all pace and not much else… Simmo played great against Metalist so no complaints there either. Glad Shola aint starting as he’s better off the bench. Also nice to see Anita, Marv and Cabs in the middle, tre technical. Also loving Cabs with the armband! Gonna be a spectacle this one…

I’m not trying to be negative, but it just surprises me, tha tline up does.
9 Rainrix // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:08 PM
I can imagine taylor is being rested with one eye and stoke and one on colo being out for so long. Obviously by the looks of things shola hasnt reacted well to the artificial turf so he’s benched.
Could bode well for campbell though.
10 toonLYF // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:08 PM
Ben Arfa in the Suarez role, i love it!
Have faith in Perchy lads! also looking forward to seeing Haidara, and i hope Danny picks up where he left off against Metalist.

So excited about the game, has the makings of a proper european tie! Great news that benny is starting! any news on the Anzhi line up?
12 Rainrix // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:11 PM
Wouldnt worry about perch. He’s decent against smaller more technical opposition as we saw against spurs. When traore enters it could be worth taylor coming on.
13 Tsunki // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:11 PM
Rainrix – sorry sorry Rainrix – to answer your question, if its over 80 minutes then Bramble.
I dunno if the Colo broken spine thing has been debunked yet but it appears my conspiracy theory about not seeing him play in a NUFC shirt again may actually not be as daft as I thought when i first made it up.
Anyhoo rushing home now to try and catch the game. Traffic!
14 lucasnufc // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:12 PM
That’s a team which won’t play hoofball, good news!
15 AmericanGeordie // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:13 PM
Ben Arfa leading the attack. Wow! It’ll be interesting to see exactly how he is utilized as a striker.
Looks like Pards will be pressing for the early away goal. (Figure HBA won’t play much more than 60 mins.) If we get a goal or two, look for Pards to bring on Ameobi, Taylor and Tiote to hold the fort and run the clock out.
16 toonLYF // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:13 PM
i’m gonna’ go 2-2 with Ben Arfa scoring both for us.

19 Rainrix // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:15 PM
Danny.. Perch is probably better suited to play against him than taylor calm down.
20 TheToonKing // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:15 PM
Whoa …..surprises by both side…..
Perch at CB, Arfa starts and is the lone striker….
Bousuffa not playing for Anzhi and Traore on the bench…this will be an interesting game. Both manager getting their tools out.
21 JAMSHA // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:16 PM
ARFA TO SCORE 6 GOALZ U HEARD IT HEA 1ST
22 DannyH10 // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Hmm we’ll see. Going to be tough for Danny Simpson against Willian as well
23 AmericanGeordie // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:17 PM
This lineup also depends on the front 6 to unlock the opponents D, because we won’t get anything offensively from these fullbacks like we’ve been getting from Debuchy & Santon.
24 Dagwoodz // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Bousuffa can’t play this game due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
25 Rainrix // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Im guessing mescaline.

Im very surprised the line up has been announced and no sign of the pitchforks yet, could be a good sign.
30 Magpies-till-d3ath // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:24 PM
Personally, I’ve never really rated Diarra. In fact, the only players in this team I rate are Willian and Eto’o. Only thing is, they’re both better than just good! Gonna be tough, very tough, although if we don’t concede any more than one, I think we’ll go through! 1-1 tonight! Benny to score!
31 MUTINYbyLEMONS // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:24 PM

32 Dagwoodz // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:25 PM

Possible, but I think it’s more likely that they are going to be constantly overlapping.
33 Unbelievable Tekkers // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:28 PM
This is going to be very interesting but I cant say im too optimistic. Benny has no experience of playing right up top and could struggle to hold up the ball when he has his back to goal.
34 boater // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:28 PM
Seven Frenchies start. Has to be some kind of record – outside of France of course.
35 ~ Phoenix Warrior Perch~ // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:29 PM
Dafuq is with that defence?!
No qualms about tiote on the bench.
36 Ginger // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:30 PM
If you look at the line up on BBC:
21 Elliot
05 Simpson
13 Yanga-M’Biwa
14 Perch
35 Haidara
04 Cabaye
07 Sissoko
08 Anita
10 Ben Arfa
22 Marveaux
25 Obertan
To me that looks like Obertan is playing the striker role.

Rainrix – allow me to walk you through my double fail post, a seat if you would please sir….
First off it was Roshan who asked who was better, Titus or Iron Mike.
Second, in beginning to address you I deliberately started your name with a small ‘r’ in memory of your previous incarnation. Of course my phone corrected it so it ended up making no sense at all.

Tsunki ,
I’ve always been a fan of Willo inthe CCL at least,I think he gets far to much stick on here, when if you think about apart from his lacking PL ability he is a model professional ,always attending charity events for kids hospitals and never being knocked out at 2 am,but I think if utility man Perch is getting the nod over him at CB then his days here are numbered,I just hope someone more experienced than Curtis Good is brought into replace him.
52 Spuggy // Mar 7, 2013 at 4:41 PM
Really tough game tonight miles away from home, freezing cold on an artificial pitch with a weakened side.
I agree with the side though – Saylor needs to be rested whenever possible and the pitch could cause him an injury.
Sorry to say it but stoke is much more important a game. If we get relegated we’re doomed.
But we have quality in the side, can’t wait to see HBA in HD on IT4!!
HWTL!!

Add a top CB, winger and striker to this squad and we are easily a top 8 side and able to challenge on all fronts.
Shame about Remy but maybe we will sign as good a player next season (or remy if QPR go down).

Russian commentators are dising us.
They say that we are without strikers but it doesn’t matter as our strikers are not scoring almost – Cisse, Ameobi.
Also they said that we are less creative and dangerous than their previous matches again Hanover who they played in the previous round.
Anyway, not respecting us so much. Saying we are not a strong side. We have good players but the team is not good.

Benny is in messis position, sisoko is in the iniesta role, marv and obert are in whoever barca decide to play wide in attack position. Cabs/xavi? Anita/brusqettes? We’ll do well to get something from this game. I’d take an away goal defeat.

139 Oleg G // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:47 PM
One of the most boring halfs I’ve seen this season. I hope our players will start performing better without the ball. They should really give more passing options.
140 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:47 PM
Not very entertaining on our part but it could be the perfect away performance if we can nick an away goal. Other than a few loose passes, not bad at all HWTL
141 TheToonKing // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:47 PM
we had a few moments but overall poor first half….
Shola instead of Obertan and marveux on the left can not hurt…
Need Sissok and Benny more involved.
142 MacToon // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:48 PM
mmm good points, Haidara looks canny again and we look comfortable but nothing special.
Does Obertan not realise that if he plays well when played he has more of a chance of playing more games…mystifying.
143 Marty-Toon // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:48 PM
Sissoko,Cabaye and basically everyone apart from defence look sluggish
144 ToonDownSouth // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:49 PM
Marveaux and in particular Obertan have been surrendering possession faaaaar too cheaply.
Bloody awful half of football though, we didn’t have a single shot!
Still, look comfortable at the back so far considering the back line.
145 noladonna // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:49 PM
very good first half the teams looked very solid think mbwia has looked very good think if we change santon for obertan whos looked well leats face it wank as per and shola for benny around 65 mins actually think we could nick the win

148 Tinman // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:51 PM
Great first half. We look very calm and composed. They dont like Benny running at them, so lets try and get the ball to his feet. People saying Marv is average? I think he has looked as good as any 1st half, some amazing touches and control and he is doing decent work coming back.
Bring on Santon for Obertan and dont let him play another game in a toon shirt. Terrible performance. Terrible attitude. This was his chance. Even more annoying when you can see the lad has potential!
BTW a boring game is fantastic for us so DONT MOAN!!!
149 pizzicatochan // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:51 PM
at work, so not watching the game, but given it’s the plastic pitch, would we try to avoid injuries?
150 geordieracer1980 // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:52 PM
It’s a case of job done in the first half. Pretty insipid from both sets of players but that suits us more than it suits them.
Just a word on the pitch…..it’s amazing how much this pitch is causing the players difficultly. Both teams have had problems controlling the ball, the first touch of most players has been poor and neither team can judge the pace which to play balls ahead of an on-rushing team mate.
Never mind, I will take a 0-0 or even sneak a 1-0.
Howay the lads.
151 FloridaToon // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:52 PM
Obertan by far the worst player so far. No one really stands out but Perchino is looking good.
Will take 0-0 back home to SJP
152 Spuggy // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:52 PM
Very good half actually.
Nullified them, playing within ourselves to avoid injury. Obertan very poor mind, we need to replace him with a quality winger. The lad doesn’t have a footballing brain at all.
More of the same then turn up the heat in the final 20-30 mins stick shola on and maybe tiote and santon on.
I’d be comfortable playing for a draw though to be honest – huge game on Sunday.
153 Spuggy // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:53 PM
We’d do these at home like.
154 Mister Tuff // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:54 PM
Well no real problems so far -both teams stuck in first gear, Early slip up by Simpson nearly coast us. Obertan is a totally waste of space-useless -even Beglin said he was a liability. Elliot looks nervous at times -don’t know whether I would have full confidence in him. Benny not that involved. Expect them to come out with a bit of urgency in second half.
But going very well at the moment -even Percy look calm.
155 Spuggy // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:54 PM

156 Dukis22lt // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Have to be happy with the defense considering they have Eto and Traore up front.
Obertan…..trying to give him a chance but his football IQ is rock bottom right now.
We don’t seem well-drilled for the fast pace play we are attempting with Obertan on the left hand side.

163 lukes26 // Mar 7, 2013 at 5:56 PM

I think its Shola time. There’s been no hold up play in the final third. Im guessing Obertan off and Shola on very soon into the second half.

As long as we don’t need to chase the game – they’re amazing defensively, and good on the break.

Being someone who has actually played a lot of competitive games on a artificial pitch I can say that it makes a big difference. Its harder to control the ball, the bounce is harder to read but it takes far less energy to get about the pitch.

Anzhi surely must come out in the second half and have a go -we may get them on the break – probably not if Obertan is still playing- his running back to receive the ball from a defender and then passing it back again to the same defender achieves zero. A footballing numpty.
177 Tinman // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:02 PM
Santon for Obertan! Or Tiote! Come on Alan, have some baaaaaaaaalls
178 Marty-Toon // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:02 PM
Don’t know what people are xpecting here?
Most European football is payed differently to the PL
The main focus for teams is to keep it tight and not let in goals and hope for an away goal on the break ….we’ve actually kept them well at bay.
Not saying I enjoy this type of football but it works and we’ve got 45 mins to steal a goal now
Howay the lads

the quality of Gouffran as compared to Marv and Obertan is night and day, with there back to the defenders and they don’t even have thought of moving forward. Poor benny did not look match fit at all so understandable that he didn’t have a great game
Marveaux is poor for me he just doesn’t seem to have any desire or work rate and is a greedy get on the ball, seen nout from him since december to justify this first team place people want him to have so badly!
Simmo is still simmo, thought he might try n up his game abit to try and at least challenge for a spot
Mbiwa has been my MOTM tonight though, if it stays 0-0 have to say that’s a a great result to take back to SJP
272 toonLYF // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:49 PM
M’Biwa, class act.
273 Unbelievable Tekkers // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:49 PM
Just wondering if anybody else has witnessed obertan make more than 3 successful passes…..unbelievable
274 geordieracer1980 // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:50 PM
I think we’ve defended very well indeed.
TADS
I wouldn’t call myself a Simpson fan, but he hasn’t put a foot wrong all night.
275 nufcursed // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:50 PM
tiote is not good enough anymore to be in the first 11
if think we should sell him now he’s value’s still reasonably high
276 Marty-Toon // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:51 PM
How is it possible to not get something on the ball to get it into the box or try a shot
277 Marty-Toon // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:51 PM
Well we will take that result
278 NUFC_LEAZES END // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:51 PM
Yanga m’biwa and haidara my man of the match easily
279 Big Pappa Cissé // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Job done. We can have these Russian mongs at St.James’
280 toonbrother // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM

281 TimKrulFan // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Sissoko that was awful disappointed with him.
282 NUFC_LEAZES END // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
And perch and Elliot
283 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Well, not an entertaining match, but a good result.
First team to deny Anzhi a win in Moscow? Fair play and job done.
To SJP we go!
284 Joe Blog // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
F**k me that was boring.
Ta-rah!
285 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Geordieracer
For me he’s done his usual mate stood off to much, played ok but still can’t seem to look up to see if a pass is on
Didn’t say he’d played badly just thought he’d up his game seeing as he’s used to being a first team regular
286 TheToonKing // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Ok. I can live with this 0-0. We can beat them at St James.
287 MacToon // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Could have been worse, shame we didn’t get an away goal though, stifled game. MYM, Perch and Haidara pick of the bunch for me.
288 toonicle // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Could have gone worse, we got a draw away.
289 nufcursed // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
even more boring game than our previous european games!
i think our tactics are to bore a team into losing
we actually might win the europa league!
great tactics by pardew
290 geordieracer1980 // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
I would say those posters criticising the ‘flair’ players, I think that’s a little harsh. Tonight wasn’t a night for the Ben Arfas, Marveauxs, Eto’s et all. Tonight was about the James Perchs’, Mbwia and Danny Simpsons. Defend well, keep a clean sheet, then get the hell out of there.
291 Markaccus // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:52 PM
There you go. First team to stop anzhi from winning a euro game at home. Stfu negative-heads. We’ll beat them at home, I’m sure.
292 niafron // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:53 PM
All right…
Well, 0-0 is probably the most balanced result for a first leg. We didn’t lose, but neither did we score away.
293 ~ Phoenix Warrior Perch~ // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:53 PM
Perch Contender for man of the match. Several important challenges and a couple good blocks. Thought he was well solid today.
Shame we were playing with 10 men only. Obertan should never wear the kit again. Must have a record for most balls given away.
Draw is a decent result.
294 saxonfenken // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:53 PM
Unbelievable Tekkers
Was Marveaux and Benny any better
295 Oleg G // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:53 PM
Good solid game in defense.
Perch MOTM. M’biwa and Haidara also played very well.
Also Simmo played good. This what happens when you have competition for your spot.
Sissoko was a bit lost today.
Cabaye also played well.
And Hatem with the miss. But happy to see him back.
296 carl // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:53 PM
Pardew out hiddinked Hiddink. MOTM. M’Bwia.

Was very impressed with young haidara tonight
298 Marty-Toon // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:54 PM
Obertan worked hard to rectify his own mistakes!!
Unessessary mistakes so what’s the point in having him on there?

Fair do’s mate. I think he had a really good game and did exactly what you want a full back to do in a tricky away fixture in Europe. Cracking result, bring on the second leg. Think I might get myself a ticket to that one! Hopefully it’s a full house and we make life as difficult as possible for them. If Simpson plays like that in the second leg, I would agree with you, mate! Need a bit more if we want to go through.
300 mot7 // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:55 PM
obertans passing is disgusting for a pro footballer
Marv is lazy
Shola is a waste of a shirt as he offers nothing at all .
Elliot well done son good game
The rest done there jobs with little fuss boring game but job well done
301 saxonfenken // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:56 PM
That under the circumstances was an excellent result, Our defenders were brilliant, Can I give MOTM to the back four
302 lukes26 // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:56 PM
MOM is Anzhi’s RB, whoever the hell he is.
Newcastle’s MOM is probably Mbiwa…Sissoko had a good game too.
Horrible game to watch, but result suits Newcastle just fine. Very even match.
Newcastle were much much much better with Shola up front
303 Dennis Twice // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:57 PM
Obertan played well.
304 mot7 // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:59 PM
Obertan was a joke
305 FloridaToon // Mar 7, 2013 at 6:59 PM
Anzhi looked tired at half. Our defense was well organized. We didn’t sit back and took our shots going forward. Not the most exciting game, but in Anzhi play like this at SJP we will win.
306 DokToon // Mar 7, 2013 at 7:01 PM
thats a good result…
307 carl // Mar 7, 2013 at 7:03 PM
Florida
It’s how we play @ SJP. We have the initiative!
308 YankeeToon // Mar 7, 2013 at 7:03 PM
Back 4 is the man of the match for me. Benny played out of position have no problem with his decision to chip because he’s spot on most the time.
Gabs and Marv were sickening…which is what made some of are other players look not involved offensively into the match i.e. Sissoko and Cabaye.
Away goals count for two…hope it doesn’t bite us in the end!!!
309 jockonthetoon // Mar 7, 2013 at 7:13 PM
Obertan – HUH – good god y’all what is he good for ……….
