Said before the game I wasn’t that confident in our back 4. Was proven wrong.

Perch/Mbiwa/Haidara top three contenders for MoM. Simmo had a pretty good game as well, defensively.

Elliot made a couple good saves. Especially the second reaction save from Eto’s low volley.

Why can”t our defence be like this in the BPL?

Perhaps start Haidara ahead of Santon? Haidara seems to have a good understanding with Mbiwa.

Gotta go with Perch. Played well in defense and in DM. Held his own against Traore and Eto’o.

Perch and mbiwa were excellent as was haidara, the lad seems to know how to time his forward runs properly.

    Great result.
AP did really well with the set up of the team.
Good tactics tonight with Ben Arfa up front as we wouldn’t have had much cover for Simmo with him not fit.
Elliott did great with a couple of saves.
Hope we look fitter next week,Sissoko didn’t really get going and you could see him egging on Marveau and Obertan trying to get them up the line but they looked baffled

As a game that was not a good match -as a result for the Toon it was a top performance- by all -apart from Obertan -he really is such a poor player. Shola whilst he has been a good servant of the club needs to retire. Substitutions were good at the right times. Percy and the team/squad must be cock-a-hoop with that performance in a horrible place to have to play. Top job.

Clearly Obertan he was brilliant all over….I jest I jest he was in fact terrible and tear jerking how he stayed on the pitch I’ll never know

In fact most of the ones ‘pushing’ for the PL starting 11 did very little to make their case imo

Fair play to pardew tonight got his tactics spot on

delighted with the result superb organised back four, Elliot did well one very good save. Interesting tactics that got what we set out to get. Couple of fringe players had a chance to impress think they both know they could of done better when they had possesion of the ball. Job not done focus on the second leg after the Stoke match now. Team spirit looked good Tiote coming on as captain impressed.
Well done lads safe journey home without niggling injuries, really looking forward to sunday now.

Very solid display i just hope we don’t rue not having scored an away goal I think the tie is still very much 50/50. Some very good defensive performances but how obertan has represented france at every youth level I do not know the very least a professional footballer should be able to do is pass the ball 5 yards. Before anybody defends him this isnt a reflection just based on this game but based on 90% of his matches.

I read a few people on here saying they’d rather we lost 2-1 than drew 0-0. 😐

Good result, and in the last 30 we looked the far more likely side to make something happen.

For me Yanga-Mbiwa. What a class defender he is. Normally I would not write this but after tonight it has to be said. What was Obertan doing? Wasted so many potential chances by terrible passing skills and shows that he does not know how the game should be played. I can’t believe that he was allowed to continue after the first half. Otherwise the defence looked really solid. HWTL

I always thought that you wanted to at least score a goal away?……it is clear that we were set up for a defensive draw, possibly nick one but we didn’t.

Defensively we were good, HBA with match fitness may have nicked one. Cannot fault the team display, slightly nervous about the home leg, but imagine we will give another good display, just gotta keep Willan and Eto at bay. HWTL

The reason why Ben Arfa cannot play the number 10 role is beacuse we are not a good passing team.the further up u are the pitch, the less likely you will get the ball and thus ben arfa wouldnt be involved in the game as such. This is also the reason why sissoko goes missing sometimes in games. Until we become a passing team like swansea, ben arfa is most effective on the wing where it is easier for him to recieve the ball

lots might say obatan was the awful and i agree his was poor but the worst player on the pitch was marvo he didn’t even try and i think he knows he is going to leave in the summer he was already commanding starts during the winter and was not happy with being on the bench during league games. i think he isn’t bothered if we get knocked out and doesn’t bother making an effort now.

Totaly right how a player that trains with a ball nearly every day of his life and is deemed good enough to make football his job cant pass a ball to a nufc shirt is shocking .
Massive heed with a tiny pea brain rattling around in there i think

Any chance of losing the clueless Pardew tag? His tactics were spot on. A boring game but a perfect away performance. Difficult to choose MOM as there was little to choose between GK, back 4, Cabaye even Anita who I thought was always in an area to take a pass and retain possession, which is what this game was all about.

Hopefully Marv performances tonight sheds some light for some posters as why Pards plays Jonas over him. Jonas 100% percent effort, wins free kicks, always looking to go forward and backtracks on defense…debate over!!!

Missed the game cus was at work but sounds like a very good performance, an away goal would have topped it but we got it spot on…against a team with a few world class players miles away from home on a plastic pitch against a team with 100% record at home in europe….well done pards.

Elliot solid again? Anyone got a feelin krul may find it hard to get straight back in? Elliot looks solid and doesnt put us under pressure with his lack of kicking ability.

    M’biwa
    Perch
    Elliot

I’m gonna have to go with m’biwa, because of the way he handled that giant all game

Im buzzing for sunday and thursday, good effort for the fans who went 1500 miles into freezing Russia to cheer on the lads.
I only travel 40 and whinge about the traffic, the roads and normally Obertan when he plays.
How the hell he stayed on the pitch for so long amazes me, he is clueless, both in attack and defense, he does not read the game at all and does not know how to close down any player.
Rant over, good result but will need to step it up at home next week, hopefully we will have Cisse back to play along side Benny, socks and Cabaye.
It wont be easy but I think we can score, although their defence did look quite good , ours was much stronger.
considering our team cost around 20 mil, and Willian cost almost double that on his own, we have done well.
    Roll on Sunday HWTL

We have some great passing players
Anita,Cabaye and Sissoko can pass the ball accurately throughout most games as can Benny but when ya work your butt off and pass the ball to either Marveau or Obertan and time and time again they lose the ball it is so frustrating and exhausting
You could see it on sissokos face the disgust

great result if we play the same at home (defensively) we should be ok
to think that was a WHOLE NEW DEFENSE is unbelievable really perch was brilliant for me!
but obertan infuriated me and any1 who says he was alright are bonkers!!
the most infuriating thing about him is his concentration EVERY time the whistle blows in any situation he turns his back and jogs back not knowing wats happening behind him in fackin boils my piss!
surely thats somthing thats easy too learn but he hasn’t!!
needs to sharpen up and soon

    I agree
People on here think “Marvo” is wonderful always shouting for him to play, To me is very light weight, lazy and disinterested most of the time as he was again tonight. how many times has he actually played well, he offers no threat most of the time, and his choice of passing sometimes is baffling. As his shot instead of a simple ball rolled across the box away at Metalist. Always hoped Obertan would make it but sadly he never will.
Got to give Benny the benifit of the doubt tonight as it was his first run out for so long.
However it was a great result, now for St James Park, when they will have to travel and have an important game on the following Sunday

I voted for Mapou but Haidara had a very good game too.
I prefer Haidara to Santon at left back role. Becasue we should put left footed player at left back position. And of course he can both attacking and defending well than Santon.
Bacically,This is my thought about position.

THIS GUY IS A MILE AHEAD OF COLO AND SAYLOR.

Handled that man mountain with so much ease and compusure.

Haidara much better DEFENDER than santon.

    Needs to start EPL.

Okay relief more than regret (of not getting an away goal). Taking Europa league in isolation, this is our 7th clean sheet our 10th match, with 9 goals scored and 5 goals conceded. Playing without a recognized striker was a smart thing to do by Pardew, i am sure even the great Guus had to think for once.

Anzi will know that they need a just a goal now, to gain an upper hand. we should know that we have to just throw everything at them once the 2nd leg kicks off.

keeping the same defence line might be a good idea. cisse would definitely play with ben arfa and mousa lurking behind him. cabaye & anita/perch/tiote behind them.
Btw, I was wondering if anzi will find it tough in a natural surface, just as we were sceptical about their turf?
