Stoke At The Uppermost Of My Thoughts

1:51 pm, Saturday, March 9th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 74 Comments

A win against Stoke City tomorrow and Newcastle fans will be able to relax a little and look forward toi what could be a great game against Anzhi Makhachkala at St. James’ Park where a win will take us through to the Europa League quarter finals for the first time since 2004.

alan pardew with new beard

Alan Pardew - vows to keep that beard – oh no!
.
And Alan Pardew will be working with the squad today to prepare them for tomorrow’s vital game, where the result is more important that how we play – we simply must get all 3 points.

And Alan Pardew, fresh from the “success” in Moscow, had this to say about tomorrow’s game:

“The game tomorrow is at the uppermost of my thoughts.” “We need to get a win tomorrow to really set up Anzhi on Thursday night“ “And we don’t want to be going to Wigan having not won against Stoke.”

Newcastle easily won last year’s home game against Stoke by 3-0, and that same score tomorrow will see Newcastle go above Stoke in the league table, and since Stroke are currently in 11th place, that could elevate us in the league table by quite a few places.

A win tomorrow and we;ll be in really good shape – and all we have to do then is to hammer Anzhi on Thursday night.

But then we’ll have to beat Wigan Athletic next Sunday at the DW Stadium.

Comments welcome.

Gosh, if we lose to Wigan all the goons on here will be screaming to get their overrated tactically useless manager in as NUFC manager.

  • 2 bollance // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:23 PM

    Munster

Good point. As much as Martinez is over rated, you could argue Tony Pulis is under rated.

I would have Pards over both of those two. No competition.

  • 3 Mark the Mag // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:28 PM

Wigan hitting form at the same time as last season again ? Quality today at Everton, just shows when there on their game there nearly unplayable just like when they done us 4-0. Will have to show them the respect they deserve, as Everton thought it was gonna be a walk over. They seem to relax and play there best football when others start to panic.

  • 4 Novocastrian66 // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:34 PM

Martinez is a quality manager. I would like to see how he would manage with a bigger budget and better players at his disposal. His teams play excellent football and he does not change his philosophy no matter what the circumstances are.
I would like to see him at Newcastle tbh. Not saying Pardew out, I just like Martinez.

  • 5 Lucky Les // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:39 PM

Mark the Mag Wigan never seem to play the same standard 2 games in a row so let us hope today is their good day and they have a stinker against us next week.If we were to lose to Stoke the game could suddenly become a vital relegation showdown.Let us hope a win against Stoke makes it less stressful.

  • 6 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Just found out that Colo is in Argentina to recover from injury…..

    ….not suspicious at all that!

  • 7 Jail for Ashley // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:47 PM

I’ve always said to those who constantly slate Pardew be very careful what you wish for in wanting him sacked, can you imagine the clamour to get rid of Moyes on here after getting humped at home in a quarter final.

  • 8 Mark the Mag // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:49 PM

Yeah Les, if we can get past Stoke it will be a big relief, and we will be able to enjoy the Anzi game, and take a little pressure off against Wigan. We are much improved now and hopefully a lot wiser because of this experience this season.

  • 9 Jail for Ashley // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:51 PM

I’ve seen posters on here under the illusion that Souness was brought in to instill discipline to our team, the real reason he was brought in is because Moyes, Fat Sam, Bruce the O Leary didnt want the job.

  • 10 check the toastie // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:53 PM

If we lose against Stoke who are shite by the way, we are in big trouble. And Martinez is a super manager, is keeping a side in the premier league on an absolute shoestring, if Parsnip had his squad he would give up and just say his squad wasnt good enough and needed strengthening or else we are going down.

Parsnip Couldnt lace Martinez’s boots in respect of how he wants his team to play. I have seen Wigan in the last two years outplay Arsenal away, Man Utd at home, and i mean outplay, not going in front and then defend desperately for the rest of the game ala Parsnip.

He has Gary Caldwell playing centre half for f##ks sake, they are bound to concede a bunch every now and then.

  • 11 check the toastie // Mar 9, 2013 at 2:57 PM

And personally i think Moyes does OK, however dont think he is up to a big job, just dont think he sets his teams up to play the game in a decent fashion, certainly not in the way Villa Boas has done at Spurs, well impressed with the way press high up the pitch and knock the ball about on the deck.

Too direct for me, Moyes and if he did get the Man Utd job he wouldnt last long.

  • 12 Jail for Ashley // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:02 PM

Check, why do you think Martinez lost out on the Lpool job to Brendan Rogers.

  • 13 Mark the Mag // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:03 PM

Check, Martinez inherited a good team from Bruce although they did sell Valencia and Palacios he had them in the top ten. Martinez wasted £7mill on Bosselli and although they do play good football are always struggling relegation, Pardrew and moyes play realist prem leauge football not wanna be barca occasionaly.

  • 14 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:06 PM

check – I agree, as soon as Everton have it at all tough they just ghoof it up, like they did today!

  • 15 Mister Tuff // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:09 PM

Lucky Les -previous post re PL scores today – I agree that the best all round results today would be draws- this equates to potential points lost to all those involved in todays relegation scraps -accompanied of course by a good win tomorrow.
Really Stoke are a rubbish side -on paper and taking into account our recent signings we should be giving them a walloping. I would like to see Walters have a rubbish game to silence one or two on here who said he might be a good acquisition for us.
Got some stats below which -should suggest it’s a win for us.
    • Stoke have lost six of their previous eight league games
    • Stoke haven’t scored in five of their past six league away games and have have scored the lowest number of away goals in the league, eight
    • Newcastle have come from behind to win their past two home games in the league
    • Stoke have the most yellow cards from fouls, 48

  • 16 Mark the Mag // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:10 PM

Jail, with that list of managers you listed that we missed out on it makes you, appreciate Pardrew even more.

  • 17 yo-yo // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:11 PM

    JfA

I thought he’d turned them down ? And Brendan was the backup – may have got that the wrong way round but I rate Martinez above Rogers – it was Martinez who got Swansea organised b4 Rogers arrived.

Still rate Moyes – it takes more than one game to spoil his reputation but I agree he is tactically basic compared with Martinez. Funny that Martinez night be better for Manure than Moyes too.

  • 18 Lucky Les // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:12 PM

The quicker we can get safe in the league the quicker we can hopefully field our first team and make a big effort in the Europa.

  • 19 check the toastie // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:12 PM

Jail – Martinez turned the job down, plus Rodgers is also a super manager, Liverpool will only improve under him, even though he is awful to listen to.

  • 20 do the hatem shake // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:20 PM

if we lost ben arfa who would be your replacement ? hopefully this will get the banter starter

  • 21 Rowan Milsted // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:23 PM

I’m feeling fairly confident about our next two games (probably a precursor to us losing them both!). Stoke at home are always tricky but at our place it’ll be a different matter. We’ll be going all guns blazing and I also have a good feeling that both Cisse and HBA will be fit.

As for Anzi, I thought we did a very good tactical job on them and it was good to see Pardew get it right in that respect. Again, at our place it will be very tough for them. Yup, I’m feeling good. Could be a massive two wins for us.

  • 22 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:23 PM

Well tads…when you rush back a player with a hamstring problem who should have been out at least 4-5 weeks and you course a setback of 3 month then it is called mismanage my friend.

It actually doesn’t take a dooctor to explain this to Pardew. I have played professionally myself and injuries did me in. I called this when it happened and said that is 4 or 5 weeks in the treatmentroom.

  • 23 Mark the Mag // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:25 PM

Ben Arfa simply irreplacable, but if he did go i wouldnt be too diasppointed if we signed Ronaldo or Bale, and Messi wouldnt be to bad either i suppose.
Filth have just scored an alright goal for them on the counter like.

  • 24 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:26 PM

Martinez is a good manager no doubt about that!

  • 25 Mark the Mag // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:31 PM

remy 1-1, not so much of a mug now, starting to like him.

  • 26 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:49 PM

I wouldn’t mind the Scum beating QPR :-)

…I enjoy our rivalry with Sunderland, but I distaste QPR!

  • 27 WWYCD // Mar 9, 2013 at 3:56 PM

Once again with the managers preferable to Pardew conversation? Pards isn’t leaving just accept this lads and none of the names mentioned would want to manage Ashleys Newcastle

  • 28 Marty-Toon // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Sky sports are saying that Huth is out for tomorrows game and the Etherington is doubtful too :-) everything helps
We should have enough tomorrow but with Cisse on and off or mainly off I wonder who’ll score.
Shola will help hold the ball up,would rather see Ben Arfa or Gouffran up there but then we’d maybe end up with the clueless Alien on the wing again :-(
Marveau could take Gouffran’s place as could Santon with Haidara playing LB
    Many possibilities

  • 29 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:09 PM

    Jesper
Your missing the entire point of the fact that Ben arfa does none of his rehabilitation work at newcastle, he goes to the clairfontaine, if he returns and there medical staff are telling ours staff he’s looking fit, has a couple of weeks training where he has looked good and he’s telling the staff and media as he was, that he feels good then how has pardew mismanaged him?
Your not going to convince me that a manager, who held HBA back the previous season until he was 100% sure that he was ready despite the fans screaming for benny and Pardews head, is going to just say ah fcuk it and throw him in for the sake of it

Sorry Jesper but I do think you pin far far far to much on pardew and at the same time are very reluctant to give credit where it’s due

  • 30 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:13 PM

    YO
Spot on mate, it’s kind of like talking about what to spend your money on when you win the lotto ;)

    Bills
    From previous previous post!
Completely agree mate mate would hate to see us run like QPR tbh when you read there interviews etc, and given there rock bottom they come across as embarrassing, you get the impression that nobody at the club believes or cares if they can stay up
Think they could do a Pompey if they get relegated

  • 31 89Norcal // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:14 PM

So long as Cisse is match fit, he will almost surely be up front, Marty Toon. The Ben Arfa experiment there was more out of desperation with no Cisse or Gouffran.

That’s better because it means Gouffran will play on the left and Hatem’s return will FINALLY spell the end of Jonas’ starting spot!

Sory Guti I’ve been pulling for you but you’re so inconsistent man.

  • 32 Rowan Milsted // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:17 PM

    Marty

I reckon we’ll play Cisse, Marvs and Gouffran as an attacking 3 and assuming they’re all fit. Benny just behind, Cabs and Tiote behind him, Usual back 4 but without Colo of course. Elliot in goal.

  • 33 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:20 PM

    Rowan
What makes you think marveaux will start? Think seeing as jonas was rested he’ll defiantly start which tbh I’d rather him than Marv who is shocking wide just looks lazy

  • 34 Jail for Ashley // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:21 PM

    Tads,
A mixture between Mashleys business sense and Fernadez’s generosity would be pretty good bar an ogliarch or Arab sheik.

  • 35 89Norcal // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:24 PM

    “…jonas was rested he’ll defiantly start…”

Say it isn’t so, tads :(

  • 36 Jail for Ashley // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:24 PM

    Tads,
Tbh I’m not that impressed with Marveaux, you seen more than I did of him at WHL, but I only counted three touches and I think the good he has done isn’t that memorable, would like to see him and Obertan shipped out or swapped in the summer.

  • 37 MacToon // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:31 PM

Can’t believe I’m wanting the mackems to score!

  • 38 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:33 PM

    JFA
Hmm a fernandes ashley combo? Half the stadium would be a buffett!!!
As for marveaux completely agree don’t really get what he offers the team, I mean he’s a winger who doesn’t play on the wing anymore and now wants to be a CAM
Well there’s def nobody in midfield who he’d knock out the squad!
Sell him and obertan and get a genuine wide man for me

  • 39 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:34 PM

    Mactoon
QPR do have that ability to make them the most dislikeable teams in the league!

  • 40 MacToon // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:36 PM

tads, I’d just love to see if saggy chops jumps ship or spends a year in the championship and ofcourse for him to stop stealing our players ;-)
A draw would be the perfect result for us in this qpr/mackems match.

  • 41 Jail for Ashley // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:38 PM

I can’t bring my self to hate QPR as much as Id like,a good mate of mine is from Shepherds bush and a lifelong supporter.

  • 42 Jail for Ashley // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:39 PM

Are you mates with Solano or is that Thump.

  • 43 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:40 PM

    MacToon
Old ‘arry would be out of there in a flash if they go down!

  • 44 Rowan Milsted // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:40 PM

    tads,

I just feel that he needs a run of games. He has shown some potential and is a reasonably creative player – something we’re short of. I’d play Guti over him in certain games, mainly for defensive reasons, but not at home to stoke.

  • 45 yo-yo // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:43 PM

Think we’ll play Jonas and maybe sub Marv in 70mins. He has flattered to deceive for me and maybe he needs a run in the side but he just is a bit too hot and cold for me. And Oba never gets above lukewarm

  • 46 MacToon // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:45 PM

    lol, Flash ‘Arry haha.

I know solano and Thump mate and 1 or 2 others from here. If you’re going to ask how he is, he has improved health-wise over the last month or so :-)

  • 47 MacToon // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:46 PM

Oh useless mackems ha ha ha 3-1 down ha ha ha, ah well

  • 48 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:48 PM

    Rowan
Is glimpse’s of potential at 26/27 enough? I think he’s gone and that’s why he’s not playing just don’t think he has the right attitude for the club

  • 49 Jail for Ashley // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:48 PM

    Mac,
    That’s good news.

  • 50 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:52 PM

Jeez the mackems are useless! ;)

    JFA
Funny talking about moving players like Marv on it doesn’t seem that along ago when we were all getting excited about the possibilities of signing players like Lewis magugan!!

  • 51 MacToon // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:53 PM

    Jail, it is indeed.
I’ve met a few posters from here at FansUTD meets, all are welcome and usually the meets are first Monday or Tuesday of the month now held at Number9 bar on Stowell Street and all are welcome. When they began the meetings 18 months ago or so their major aim was to try and have a dialogue with the club. Considering they had Wendy Taylor at the last meet but 1, I’d say they have accomplished their major aim :-)

  • 52 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:55 PM

tads…I am really not looking to convince you. You can due as you please!

…Ain’t changing my standpoinnt on this on my friend. Whether Newcastle sends Benny to France when he is injured or he stays in Newcastle is beside the point.

Any way Pards has admittet he was rush…in he own way!

  • 53 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 4:57 PM

    Jesper
In his own way your interpretation of his own way?

  • 54 Rowan Milsted // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:04 PM

    tads

You might be right, there’ve been a few times I thought he’d start and he didn’t. Personally I think he has only shown glimpses as he’s not really had the chance to do anything more – but then I don’t see what goes on in training. That could be the reason.

I think we can agree that he’s better than Oba who should be an 80th minute sub and nothing more. He has definitely had his chance and not really taken it.

The area I feel we’re weakest in is wingers and that’s another reason why I’d like to see more from Marvs. Maybe Pards will play Haidira or Santon as a LW – though I’d rather play Jonas there if Marvs isn’t. We should aim to sign a winger or two, a striker and a CB in the summer.

  • 55 Rowan Milsted // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Hope that didn’t sound like a total Oba bash – he has his moments. They’re just very few and far between and seem to happen only when he comes on a late sub. When he starts he’s usually poor, probably our worst player on Thursday. Having said that he got back and won the ball back a few times which we should give him credit for. Unfortunately his crossing and passing is poor – a bit of a problem when you play on the wing!

  • 56 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:08 PM

    Rowan
Completely agree mate past HBA and goofy we really don’t have any quality out wide and realistically goofy is not even a winger! But luckily has taken to the role well
Think attack is the main area we now need to strengthen come the summer we’ve been lucky since jan that midfield has chipped on with a few goals which is something we’ve missed since Nolan tbh

  • 57 Jamiemac // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:09 PM

If we win by 2 goals and West Ham lose away to Chelsea by 2 goals then we go 11th and only behind 10th on GD!

  • 58 toonarmydownsouth // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:11 PM

    Rowan
Ober is probably the most frustrating player in the squad he has the pace he has the skill but he has no idea how to use it! The lad gets back and defends well tbf but that’s not really what you want from your winger!

  • 59 Transfer Sage // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Why do people rate Martinez and Rodgers so highly?

Martinez always just avoids relegation, yes they sometimes play great a stuff but they are not consistent and far from solid. Limited funding so doing the best he can but making the step up is harder than you’d think. Also Liverpool say they never offered him the job and I believe them…why would he turn it down to stay at Wigan? He’s either a liar or idiot so I’ll go with liar.

Rodgers is a very average manager. The philosophy is pass sideways, sideways, sideways, back, sideways….knock it to Suarez and hope he scores. He buys badly too…Allen for 15mil, Italian forward for 10mil…poor buys. Did ok with sturridge and courtinho but those were established players so anyone could spot them. Liverpool have gone backwards in terms of results from last year.

Pards is far from perfect but I’d not swap him for either of those two. Yet to prove themselves.

  • 60 MacToon // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:14 PM

As far as I can see the likes of Marv, Ober, Fergy, Tav and maybe other have all had chances this season to impress and impose themselves on the first team but have not really grasped their opportunities unlike Gouff or Haidara who have played well when given the chance.

  • 61 Rotonda heights // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:15 PM

How the hell is Martinez over rated? What he has achieved for season after season on a shoestring at Wigan and how he’s stayed loyal there when he could have gone to a club with far, far more resources like Liverpool is amazing.

Martinez got Swansea playing like they are and wherever he’s been he’s always tried to play football. Personally I love watching Wigan, apart from when they smacked us 4-0 and would love to see them stay up much more than a Stoke or a West ham who are nothing short of a disgrace to football.

Martinez deserves far more than most to be at a big club and to be backed. He is an absolute gent and has class written all over him as a person and a coach. The likes of Laudrup and Matinez all over the Pulis’ and Allardyces any day of the week for me.

  • 62 Transfer Sage // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:18 PM

    Rowan

Obertan is garbage and the sooner we get shot the better. Poor work ethic and commitment, doesn’t look like he cares and to top it all off he isn’t even good.

Genuine talent at a young age but not now, did a good job in youth set ups and early career in France but never mind confidence some people say, he just hasn’t got the quality or intelligence to step up to top level football.

Used to have a lot of patience with him but I’ve grown tired of watching a soulless display every time he plays. Time to go and replace with better

  • 63 Rowan Milsted // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:19 PM

    tads

‘Frustrating’ is the best word to describe him. If he was total rubbish then at least we could just say he is total rubbish. But he’s not. He has the potential to be a very dangerous player who can unlock things but as you say he seems clueless and is so often wasteful. It’s embarrassing at times.

Yeah, both he and Jonas do a good shift and protect the FBs – especially Jonas – but you need so much more going forward from your wingers. I agree with you re Gouffran, he’s been great for us so far, but he shouldn’t be a winger as such. He’s great at running the channels but he needs to be in goal scoring positions. I also think that Cisse benefits from having someone a bit closer to him. Really hope HBA is fit tomorrow – think he will be banging on Pard’s door to get a game!

  • 64 Transfer Sage // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:22 PM

    Rotonda

Swansea weren’t good last year, kept the ball but all on their own half and never progressive just cautious and tentative. For more praise than they deserved so I blame Rodgers as Martinez is more direct. But laudrupp is something special, got swansea playing much better and now they have a cutting edge. He’s miles ahead of Martinez and Rodgers for me.

Wigan aren’t actually that good week in week out. Got 1 good game in 4 and that gets jumped on by the media. And loyal or just not wanted by Liverpool after interview? Can’t think of a single reason he wouldn’t leave especially when Dave whelan publicly have his blessing for him to go.

And Wigan have a higher net spend that is over the last 5 years so not a total shoe string budget as the media say.

  • 67 Transfer Sage // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Should read higher net spend than us over 5 years. Also higher spend than Fulham, reading, Southampton, Norwich, that’s gross not bet spend.

Also have a similar gross spend to Everton….so really they aren’t horribly under funded.

  • 68 Transfer Sage // Mar 9, 2013 at 5:30 PM

    Rotonda

I think it’s impossible for either of us to know how good Martinez is will be with a big club until given te chance I guess. I personally think he isn’t smart enough to do it.

Plays one way, which is pretty but not effective for every match and every situation. He’s a little naive and whilst with Wigan not many people will complain as they are grateful to be in the league if you do that with a big side and get spanked you get hammered for it.

The issue is not whether Martinez is a better manager than
Allardyce and Pulis. Clearly he is. The question is
whether he is capable of managing at a higher level. The
pressures are much greater when expectations are higher.
Clearly a number of Chairman do not share your point
of view. Not all are as football and business smart as
Daniel Levy who went for AVB when many thought
    he could not manage period.

Also got 12/16 right on an accumulator worth £1m. Swansea, Sheff Utd, Dortmund and Derby cost me £1m. Got a better chance of winning on an 11p accumulator than doing the lottery. I’m a believer.

    completely off topic:

got invited to corporate do for Wolves at the Molineux last Thursday; “speaker” was Robbie Fowler! (I know, I struggled to see the Wolves connection as well). Anyway, I got him to sign my night program with “Howay the Lads” right across the picture of him on the front.

I know I can’t say this, but had a chat and he was ok… Thanked him for autograph, them told him I still hated him for goals against us. He just laughed…scouse git.

tads…Pards never takes 100% responsibility does he ;-) lol

hamstrings are actually quite straight forward. They need time to heal and should never be rushed. You should also be vary about astroturf and cold wheather – which reminds me playing Benny in Moscow was a gamble as well no matter what the medic or those in France has said.

In the end it is Pardew’s finale call and his responsibility!
