First-choice goalkeeper Tim Krul continues to recover from the ankle injury he received late in the fantastic win against Metalist Kharkiv in the Ukraine, and that has given back-up goalkeeper Rob Elliot a chance , and in the three games he’s played he’s done very well indeed.
Rob Elliot – has played very well for Magpies
Alan Pardew talked about his goalkeeper yesterday, and it seems the only thing holding him back earlier in his career was his confidence, and he’s got that at Newcastle:
“It’s a tough agenda for him because Tim is a Dutch international and a great goalkeeper, and the fans love him here, so there’s always that pressure.” “But I never doubted his ability. The only problem Rob had when I first managed him was a lack of confidence.”
“But we pursued him because we knew that. After I left and goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman stayed there, he grew as a first-team goalkeeper and confidence was all the problem was. Now he’s got that.”
“He’s a great shot-stopper – he’s one of the best, trust me – and he’s finding a nice little niche here.”
We had noticed when Rob’s been interviewed he comes across as very modest, but still ambitious, and he’s doing a good job for Newcastle right now, and to be honest he’s always looked a good goalkeeper this season when between the sticks for Newcastle.
And we’re sure Alan Pardew is telling him that he just needs to keep that up and be consistent, and we’ve noticed his concentration is excellent – which is a big thing for goalkeepers.
And finally let us know how you think the game will go today.
