There’s still a chance to vote in the poll if you haven’t already done so.

Blah far to cheery and optimistic on here. Where are the neggars? I cant hate my own club all by myself :( .

  • 2 Markaccus // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:36 AM

@ Lee Dodd from previous article.
We don’t need to win by 2 clear goals. Away goals only count as two IF the final scores are level after both legs. Any win will be enough.

  • 3 Rainrix // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:38 AM

Mark…. He said we’ll need 2 goals if they score. I think he meant he expects them to score so we need to go out and get 2 goals

  • 4 toonbrother // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:39 AM

hubris off usually precedes a fall. Nothing wrong with quiet confidence. But talking about winning the whole competition before we’ve even qualified for the quarterfinals is plain stupid.

At least i think thats what he was trying to say :)

Rainrix…Maybe he’s had a last minute turn around and Ashley is flying him in his copter as he really doesn’t want us to get through as he doesn’t want us to do well and wants Chelsea or Spurs to win the competition!

    Rainrix…

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what has Ashley ever done for us?

    Oh, peace – shut up!

  • 22 Markaccus // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:55 AM

I thought about re-wording it but thought it sounded quite funny.

  • 38 ToonDownSouth // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:16 AM

I don’t think you can leave Tiote out. He’s been sent off once this season and given away one silly penalty – it’s not really as bad as everyone makes out.

He was awesome when he came on in Russia, his energy is just fantastic.

Having said that, Anita keeps the ball much better, as does Marveaux. Depends whether we want to restrict Cabaye really.

I’d like to see Marveaux, Jonas and Sissoko as the three tonight if we go 4231 – no width what so ever, but when was the last time we scored directly from a cross?

  • 39 Rainrix // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:17 AM

Sage… Well funny if you have a juvenile mind like we all do :) .

  • 40 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Juvenile? I’ve told you already, I’m all about realture and cultalilty…damn it Mark!

TDS…When he’s on form he’s the best man for the job. I do agree though, I don’t think it takes much from him for everyone to blow it out of proportion slightly.

  • 41 Markaccus // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:20 AM

TDS. Our full backs will give us some width, if the 2 DMs do their job and cover for which ever one goes forward. Like you say, though, we don’t get many from crosses.

  • 42 Rainrix // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:21 AM

TDS…. Agreed i actually though tiote had his best game in a long while on sunday. He was breaking up tackles passing well and getting into the opposition. The penalty just ruined it for him though and gave everyone an excuse to have a dig. I wont really be bothered who starts in the position, everyone can do a job.

  • 43 saxonfenken // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Pardew will play both Tioti and Jonas, in his strongest side, and IMO he should. Marv is lightweight and is only an impact player, goes missing to often.
BTW I see with some amusement all the pundits on here slagging the manager off for playing Benny on the plastic pitch, if my memory serves me right, 90% of those on here were baying for him to do so.

  • 44 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:27 AM

we only play with 1 DM though

then we have cabaye, sissoko who are central but not DM’s

  • 45 toonincheek // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:27 AM

    Repost -

Remembering it will be a European ref who will NOT ref the game to PL standards (of allowable physical play) and his record shows an average of 4 yellows per game.

    HAS to be Anita.

  • 46 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:30 AM

toonincheek…Now you mention it, read about this ref’s record recently…an insane amount of yellow and red cards…a fair few penalties too, maybe not a Tiote game after all.

I don’t think it has to be anita but don’t mind him playing.

I think recently tiote has gone from being very overrated to very underrated suddenly.

Anita seems good but gets too much praise for what has been a decent but not spectacular performances.

  • 49 Markaccus // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:34 AM

Saxon, that’s the nature of this blog, unfortunately. More U-turns than a Tory government lost in a council estate!

  • 50 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:35 AM

For all tiote picks up a lot of yellow cards he very very rarely converts that to a red…he manages to control himself well after his first booking.

    Ibiza and (almost) Sage -

    I must be wrong
(if you are agreeing with me!!)

Tiote survives on one yellow in the PL – different matter, I suspect, with this ref.

  • 53 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:41 AM

    toonincheek

I think he just controls himself better….although it limits his game though, makes him struggle to impose himself so I know what you mean about going for anita.

I don’t see it doing any harm goin for anita over tiote…he is also a very capable player and did well in the first leg.

  • 54 Rotonda heights // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:41 AM

    tds

Exactly 99% of arial crosses are cleared by big CHs facing away from goal. Crosses are a lottery with very little or no method.

Pull or cut backs to an on rushing player and conversions from through balls are statiscally far more successful.

  • 56 Markaccus // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:42 AM

I’d personally be wary of using tiote in this one, due to the general standard of euro-reffing, not to mention tonights ref’s record. Comes to something when you have to base team selection on who the officious, pedantic numpty with the whistle is!

  • 57 Graeme // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:43 AM

The Ref could be the biggest factor in the game and over which we have zero control. They are renowned for applying the letter of the law, rather than the spirit.

We are also playing a team with several players well versed in the dark-arts of CHEATING sorry. that should be “simulation” for the pc brigade!! Given that a place in the last 8 is up for grabs, they will try every trick in the book to get players booked or sent off and win penalties.

Not sure this is a game for Tiote unless Pardeaux has him well chilled before the match!!

  • 58 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:43 AM

Can’t wrap players up in cotton wool all the time.

The new 4G pitches, which is what used have been shown to produce no more injuries that a regular pitch….an independent study was carried out.

This was on sky sports when some rugby team recently put one it, studies have shown no more injuries occur in comparison to a regular pitch.

  • 59 toonincheek // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:44 AM

    Sage -

Yes, Simpson also did well in the first leg so I think he will get the nod over Santon.
We need to be solid defensively first – big problem if we concede a goal – maybe save Santon for later.

  • 60 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:47 AM

    rotonda

I’d like to see the stats on pull backs compared to crosses.

A well placed cut back it effective but so is a well placed cross. The problem, for both methods, is when players don’t/can’t accurately pick out the right team mate and just aimlessly play it into the box.

I think the key is to play to your strengths…if you know you will win a lot of headers and can cross accurately do that….if you know your forward is weaker in the air then play it along the ground.

the key to crossing is to put it into an area which is hard to deal with so even if the defender clears it then you have a chance of an own goal, corner or winning the 2nd ball.

  • 61 Rainrix // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Just took this from the official site…

The 34-year-old Bavarian official refereed his first Bundesliga match in September 2008 and he has refereed in the Europa League, Champions League and one international match this season between Bosnia Herzegovina and Latvia.

In total he has overseen 31 matches, showing 125 yellow cards, 11 red cards and awarded 16 penalties.

Gonna go with the crowd and say it might not be the best game for tiote. Im almost sure one or more of our players will be booked, looks inevitable with this ref

  • 62 ToonDownSouth // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:49 AM

I’m sure it was Pardew who personally assessed Ben Arfa’s hamstring and decided that he would be OK to play on it.

Not like that’s the medical team’s responsibility or anything.

  • 63 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:49 AM

    graeme

I’m not a fan of diving but don’t see it cheating anymore than deliberately bringing a player down who is through on goal to stop them scoring.

Both are doing things to gain an upperhand which are both against the rules.

I don’t mind simmo playing….he is ok, not great, we now have better but he will do a good enough job seeing as debuchy is cup tied.

I think as long as he gets forward sometimes to distract a defender and give more room to whoever plays in front of him then it’s job done for him.

  • 67 Rainrix // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:51 AM

TDS… Please don’t bring that up again, its all we talked about yesterday :)

  • 68 Markaccus // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:51 AM

Tsage, I think the 4G pitch that saracens use in the rugby is different to the anzhi pitch. We had issues using or bigger players at anzhi, but rugby forwards are generally massive beasts of men. There must be some difference. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember a piece ssn did on the saries pitch saying there was nothing else like it so far.

  • 75 toonincheek // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:56 AM

    Sage –

    No – not this time.

I don’t like ‘professional’ fouls but it’s down to the refs how they punish it. Players know (or have a good idea) how their actions will be punished and if the foul is the better option, so be it.

Diving is an attempt to cheat, to deceive.
    Very different IMO.

  • 76 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:56 AM

    markaccus

Same 4G pitch from what I heard…could be a different manufacturer and slightly different so not sure on that.

If it’s meant to be hard on joints (why shola and jonas didn’t play) then surely 16/17 stone rugby players will be more at risk with that weight and force going through their joints and getting slammed around.

Not 100% sure though, I don’t know exactly the extent of the study or anything so might not be good enough to give conclusive data.

  • 77 Rainrix // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:57 AM

  • 81 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 11:59 AM

    toonincheek

I see the difference but think they are both as bad.

You know what you are doing with a dive, tying to win a foul (usually a pen) but I still think a professional foul, bringing a guy down who’s clean through on the edge of the box is just as bad.

You are trying to gain an advantage by doing something against the rules.

I know what you mean though, diving is more sneaky and underhanded, as in you might get away with it where if you bring somebody down you wont get away with it 99% of the time.

I just think both are terrible things to see in the game.

has anyone seen catchy on here for a while?

I’d be genuinely interested to know his view on the club this past month. Whether he still holds the same opinion or if pardew has done enough to change it.

  • 85 toonincheek // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:05 PM

    Sage -

In golf, you are allowed to break the rules as long as you accept the (in golf, prescribed) penalty.
It’s only trying to deceive (by signing for the wrong score) that leads to instant DQ.

I tend to look at football the same way, and think it’s up to refs to punish professional fouls in the same way.
I know that leads to inconsistencies between refs but that’s up to the refs controlling body to sort out.

  • 86 Joe Blog // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:06 PM

Please don’t play Tiote, Mr Pardew. How one player can go through a season with such a catalogue of errors, actually a catalogue for each match, and still be held in esteem by some, belies belief.

Awful footballer and a feckless, reckless liability, doing his best to outdo good ol’ Titus in the rick count, although Titus was the last line of defence, so paid for it almost every time he made a whoopsie….

Yeh I know what you mean, trying to deceive is worse than an obvious foul as you are trying to hide it. I just find both equally annoying.

The new big gripe of mine is gareth bale. The commentators saying he is running so fast a slight touch sends him to ground. Well thats nonsense…..he isn’t running that significantly faster than other players that he should hit the deck that much more than average.

also the guy has excellent control and ballance so should be able to stay on his feet more than the average player I think.

Dodgeball ruined ESPN for me. “The Ocho”.

Looking at it objectively it would be easy to say the team has done better because of the 5 players brought in, not necessarily because of Pardew, but then I guess that argument works both ways.

If you can’t make it work with the likes of Cabs, Socks , M’Biwa et al you shouldn’t be in the job basically.

Pardew obviously gets out of his depth at times, is over cautious, makes daft decisions and has an arrogant, egotistical streak without the CV to back it up. As he says after 13 years he’s still looking for his first meaningful trophy.

However, we aren’t going to get a Laudrup any time soon, so I just hope for the best with this great squad we now have. As the song goes if you can’t have the one you want, love the one you’re with.

Ibiza… Theres a blonde bird on it now who does pre and post match interviews with the players and such. Im sure she can “unruin” it for you :)

Ranger has been arrested for assault….If anyone cares here

    Good riddance

nice it’s not our problem any more.
that word former made good reading.

  • 101 Graeme // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:25 PM

Ibiza, I have similar problems to you, being in Nigeria. People just dont seem to understand how difficult it can be sitting outside in 24C, watching the footy.

They don’t have to contend with the mozzies, beer getting warm far too quickly, nubile ladies bringing you more beer. The power going off just as we are about to score.

    Its dam tough out here!!

  • 102 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:26 PM

Rainrix..Ruin was probably not the right word, but it set some comically good high standards…that only a blonde interviewer could put right :)

TS…Really? How out of character. Wait, who is Ranger?

  • 103 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:27 PM

Graeme…I suppose the only consolation is that we know we’re not the only people to suffer like this. If we stick together we may just pull through this plight.

    Rotonda

Yeh I think it has a lot to do with signings…but then again the same can be said for most things in football.

Whats the difference at the top of the league this year? Van Persie….if he had gone to city no doubt in my mind they would be the ones clear at the top of the league.

You can only work with what you have so I think, although there were definitely mistakes early season as we were not as bad a team as that runs suggests it was not solely pardew’s fault.

I think we agreed on a continental styled coach to work with pardew to introduce him to other styles of football and how to implement them, it’s not as easy as saying pass and move as a few sometimes think….managers are quite technical now and set teams up much more thoroughly than 15/20 years ago.

I think not winning a major trophy isn’t an issue…..there isn’t a team he has managed where you would say he should have won one and he did well getting west ham to the FA cup final.

  • 105 Graeme // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:32 PM

Ibiza, its only the thought that there are others in a similar situation that keeps me going mate. Nothing at all to do with the dusky maidens and cold beer!!

I’m prepared to make the sacrifice, as long as the TOOON are on the box – it makes it survivable!!

  • 106 Rainrix // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:32 PM

Ibiza…. Theres quite a good story about dodgeball don’t know if you’ve heard it or not.

Originally the writers wanted ben stillers team to win. However during the test screens it got slammed by the viewers for letting him win so they changed it so vince vaughn won. The scene right at the end with ben stiller in the fat suit at the end of the credits is essentially a giant Fcuk you to cinema goers from the writers.

Always though that was a fun story, puts the last scene into a bit of context as well. :)

  • 107 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:35 PM

Graeme….Well we wont be getting any sympathy of anyone on here….cold hearted bunch this lot :)

Rainrix…I’ve always felt that last scene needed some context :) Interesting story and no, have never heard that.

Unfortunately I can’t see coaches being brought in – the staff setup at the moment feels like a bit of a boys club, and Pardew is the most senior ‘footballing man’ at the club, which is a perfect recipe for a club to growing stale and refusing to change.

Imo the director of football role is a necessity in a club with ambitions, unless you have a manager who is adaptable and willing to change.

  • 109 Tinman // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:38 PM

Look out for a cow and a giraffe wearing toon tops at the game tonight…

  • 110 IITianToon // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:38 PM

So I see none of you have mentioned this, but who will be our spot kickers if it ends 0-0 after 120?

    Cabaye
    Marv
    Sissoko
    Cisse
    Shola

  • 111 Graeme // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:39 PM

Can survive without any of them lol

“Sh*t, Syphilis & Sympathy: Memoirs of a toon fan”

    TDS

I just remember ferguson saying that he rotates his assistant every few years as he they can only give advice for so long before they run out of new things to tell you.

Best thing to do is have a coach/assistant who is replaced every 2/3years, learn what you can from them then get somebody with a different philosophy.

If you look to keep your manager a long time, as we seem to have planned, then you need to make sure this is done…how else will he learn new things? He hasn’t got time to learn away from the club so he needs somebody to come in.

  • 119 Tinman // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:42 PM

I’d wager they will make it onto tv

  • 120 Transfer Sage // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:44 PM

    Shola
    Cabaye
    Sissoko
    Anita
    Marv

Thats what I’d go for…but depends on the players and they feel about pens. Shola is a must though….he never misses.

  • 121 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:45 PM

IITian…I seriously hope it doesn’t come to that. If we reach penalties I’m going to need some serious medication.

  • 122 Munster Mag // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:46 PM

Jeez i’m getting worried about all this Pardew optimistic talk…

  • 123 Graeme // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:47 PM

Ibiza – nice title, but when you have been doing it for 50 years, it just doesn’t cover the emotion, sacrifice and stupidity required lol.

  • 124 IITianToon // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:47 PM

@Ibiza dont forget we are toon fans. When have we ever gotten the easy road? ;)

  • 125 Tinman // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:48 PM

I dont think it will get to pens, it will be a tight game but there is bound to be goals at some stage! Two 0-0 ties would be a far too boring. I suppose I would get my moneys worth if we went to extra time… Would rather we just won though

  • 126 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Mar 14, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Graeme…So a likely title for the second book would be:

“F**k it all: More memoirs of a toon fan”

    Munster…”Don’t worry, be happy”.

    IItian…”Times they are a changing”

Anyone else wanna throw something at me which I can answer with a song title? No? Alright, I’ll just stop.

  • 127 lesh // Mar 14, 2013 at 1:58 PM

@Ibiza……. being a literary agent may I suggest you add a couple of words to your memoirs…….. perhaps if it read:

“Sh*t, Syphilis, Pardew, disappointment and no & Sympathy: Memoirs of a toon fan”

I’d suggest that by icluding reference to Pards and his impact on you in the title might make the seriousness of your life-time difficulties (particularly over the last two or three years) more apparent to potential readers.

It may also illustrate better the seriousness of your and some NUFC supporters’ plight!

Sack him now before he makes a bollox of selection, tactics and substitutions tonight! Some of our erstwhile ever-whinging ‘supporters’ could be dancing on the streets before the match and leave them nowt to whinge about afterwards when it’ll be SNAFU!

Then and since they’ve some time on their hands now that they’ve elected a new pope, we could appointent the College of Cardinals to find us a new manager. That shouldn’t take too long shloud it?

  • 128 lesh // Mar 14, 2013 at 2:00 PM

Ibiza @121, I’ve ordered another couple of cases of San Miguel for you…… let’s call it an advance on your book publishing contract?
