In this game tonight, Anzhi were reduced to 10 men after Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez was sent off after 55 minutes, when he picked up his second yellow card with a bad foul on Haidara, and that gave Newcastle a distinct advantage, but Anzhi were very tough to break down, until a last second headed goal from Cisse, from a beautiful Marveaux cross – put the Magpies through to the quarter finals in a dramatic and sensational finish to the game. You cannot make this stuff up.
Papiss Cisse heads the winner three minutes into added time
In front of a fantastic turn-out of 45,487 fans with 359 of that number being Anzhi supporters, Newcastle had a difficult first half.
Anzhi were the better side and controlled the game with some good passing, until they were reduced to 10 men, but Anzhi still played well, and after 88 minutes a fantastic free kick from Mbark Boussoufa had Elliot beaten, and the ball hit the cross-bar and came back into play.
It looked as though the game was going to extra time, and in fact just as the three minutes of added time was up, it was that man Sylvain Marveaux again, who put in a great cross into the area from the right wing, and Papiss Cisse gave the goalkeeper no chance from six yards out, as he headed the ball like a rocket past the Anzhi goalkeeper.
And dramatically, Newcastle were through to the quarter finals in a fairy tale finish to the game, and we didn’t even have to go to extra time.
When Cisse scored the Geordie crowd went wild – and that’s an understatement – and it was so similar to the Stoke game because Adam Campbell had been brought on (after 71 minutes) in place of Vurnon Anita, and the local lad had also been brought on against Stoker, late in that game.
It was a gutsy performance from Newcastle, with Steven Taylor again having a great game at the back for Newcastle, and Sylvan Marveaux was Newcastle’s most dangerous player on the night.
But Yohan Cabaye had to go off in the first half with some injury, and the Frenchman was replaced by Jonas Gutierrez, who did a very decent job in the middle of the park once he came on.
In the first half Lassana Diarra had two good chances for Anzhi, but he was stopped both times by Steven Taylor, who blocked both of his shots, and then a terrible free kick by Yanhga-Mbiwa put the ball straight to an Anzhi player in front of the penalty area, but the ball was hit wide into the side netting – a let-off for the Magpies.
Yanga-Mbiwa looked a little shaky at times tonight.
In the second half Newcastle went into another gear, and were starting to create chances when Anzhi were reduced to 10 men , and after that – it was could Newcastle score before the game went to extra time.
And the answer was yes – with the last touch of the ball it was Papiss Cisse, with the help of Sylvain Marveaux, who again won the game for the Magpies, and referee blew the final whistle while Newcastle players were still celebrating.
And we are now in the hat tomorrow for the quarter final draw in Nyon.
You cannot make this stuff up. 😀
Chelsea and Tottenham also got through, but Spurs had a scare as Inter-Milan were ahead 3-0 after 90 minutes, and forced extra time – but a goal from Adebayor put the London side through with a valuable extra time goal – and the game ended 4-1 – and Tottenham go through on that away goal.
Chelsea beat Steaua 3-1 to go through by an aggregate score of 3-2.
Wonder who we’ll get in the quarter finals?

Comment #42Also loving the never give up attitude that we have now we go for the win right till the very end
Everyone complaining at least we are not Spurs !!!They are so jammy without Bale they are totally average they were lucky to beat us with Bale so if he gets injured they could have a problem
Sets us up nicely for the Wigan game

Comment #46Good to remember when people get disappointed we didnt run riot is that we kept a very tidy side in check. Twice. This was a good win in any sense of the word, as I thought they might just clinch it, especially right up to the point they clipped the bar.
btw the mackem who comes on to cause controversy needs to do some research before criticising Campbell. Nobody believes you unless you can get a shred of credibility going so learn from that you pennywell tracky bottom lead lifter.

Comment #50Campbell made bad runs? please tell me your being sarcastic. His work rate was massive, he came back to help defend he ran in to holes, he chased their defenders down etc. A few times tiote could of passed it to him but didnt. We need cabaye back asap cause tiote can tackle but his passing is awful, he needs to lay it off to cabs and let him sort it out. Campbell played ok today, he wasnt brought on as a ST, he was brought on to play in a CAM/CF role and he played it well. A bit of bulking up but not to much (dont want to lose to much pace) and he will be fine, loan him out to another club if we bring someone in. but he definitely has a future here, you can see his face light up when ever he gets the ball/ comes on.

Comment #55We all know we can go up a few gers from 2nites performance
God help the team we are playing when everything clicks
If i was being over critical then I think tiote and Anita were really bad 2nite. I think on current form perch is well ahead of the both of them but because he isn’t an international he doesn’t get the same recognition
Hadaira and santon were pretty poor going forward but defended reasonably well.
Funny how the balance of he team changed when jonas came on in the middle. Just shows he offers more than people give him credit for

Comment #56@TDS: I still think they are the stronger team. On the night things fell our way. On paper, they’re definitely stronger than we are but without Willian, they’re crippled.

Comment #57@manxpie you sir are very definition of a cock. They dont come more cock-like than you. I bet both your parents were big phallic looking creatures. On the odd occasion that i actually read the garbage you post on this blog, the image of a big hairy cock with arms and fingers in front of a computer screen springs to mind. If you have a problem with me posting MY OPINION, here’s my advice: Go fu*ck yourself. Afterall you have all the right utensils being the huge dick that you are

I see the regular “neggars” are out……obvious when its a match day…..
Did not think we played that well but Marveaux again was the bright spark offensively. Cisse is a natural goal scorer…..he gets the service he scores…that simple.
Saylor was magic in defense and looking very sturdy and I was delighted to see Campbell. He got muddled a few times, but his movement was good and he got on and passed the ball very well, opening up the centre of the park. Can’t believe people are being very harsh on such a young and promising talent.
Sissoko looks to me more and more to be a better choice as a DM, good ball carrier and distributor, play HBA on the flank and Marveaux in the hole. Marv is our leading player on assists so this makes the most amount of sense.
—————–Cisse————————–
Gouffran———Marv—————-HBA
————–Cabaye—-Sissoko————–
Santon——Mapou———Saylor—–Debuchy
————–Krul—————————–
This IMO is our best team. Congrats to the lads on a valiant effort and great result! HWTL

manx is a sensible poster, that post was a dig at someone who did say campbell was poor, no toon fan in their right mind would criticise an 18 year old prodigy who was full of endeavor… he also sees the space others don’t which will give us another dimension going forward, old head on young shoulders!

after cabaye and arfa, marv is our best source of creativity
mbiwa taylor look like a very very solid unit
santon looks no better on the right hand side
jonas plays better in the centre (personally i feel more comfortable with him in the centre than tiote)
cabaye is vital to our team
Pardew can actually manage???
on a final note its always the mark of a good team when you can keep it solid and win when not playing well

Being saying that since the stoke game
As soon as pards moved sissoko back against stoke and brought marv on in the hole the game changed. Actually thought he would of started that 2nite
For me perch has to start ahead of tiote. If perch doesn’t deserve a game now then when will he?

Comment #77Silly calling Campbell, it is 3 years too soon to play him against such top class opposition, he is 18 years and a child, APs stupidity having him on the bench.
More to the point, well played THE TEAM, as a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed the match and atmosphere. The result in particular.

I don’t know and don’t care…perhaps they’re closet toon fans! You would think so the way they follow us though :)!
