Papiss Cisse scored the inner after 3 minutes and two seconds of the three minutes of added time – from a terrific cross from Sylvain Marveaux – and Newcastle got their dream win tonight – a fantastic win – seconds before the game was due to go to extra time.
Sylvain Marveaux – in action tonight
Let us know who you think Newcastle’s best player was tonight.

Tough Choice between Saylor and Marv. Opting for Taylor though… thought he was a solid wall in defence and one of our bigger threats from set play’s. Unlucky not to score
7 Tsunki // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:03 PM
I went marveaux because he is the most assisting player all season anyways and the cross proved it.
Papiss Demba Cisse! Loved his homage to Ketsy (the REAL one not our own blog fruitcake) giving the hoardings a good kicking ha ha.

Marveaux man of the match. Saylor a close second. We didn’t play well enough tonight. We need a couple of strikers.

Poor game from us as we certainly didn’t look like the home side.
Poor passing all day and we couldn’t keep the ball against 10 men for such a long time.
We coulda lost it but thankfully one bit of real skill from Marveau and Cisse did the trick.
Cambell doesn’t look ready but it gives him game time

Marv certainly showed his class tonight. And on the right wing. How come everyone was saying he was no good on the wing, just through the middle?
25 TheToonKing // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:06 PM
We’ll hopefully have Benny back now for the next Europa league game. That should improve us.
We’re missing Gouffran and Debuchy in Europa.
I thought the defense was magic today.
Haidara is almost as good as Santon.
Mbiwa is just a great all around smart defender and Saylor is an absolute beast and a legend.

so chuffed with the win- pards has to go . win or no win. with 11 v 10 pards had no idea. lucky to get there in the end. our play in the last 20 yds was nothing short that rubbish. .apart from the goal, no fire power or cutting edge up front. good defense – good midfield-lacking badly up front.
35 TheToonKing // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:08 PM

- Campbell = Tiny compared to everyone else
- Steven Taylor = One man wall.

How did Tiote get the Captains armband before taylor? and where did Pardew put Campbell? it looked like he was playing on the right… surely you would want him off the shoulder?
Could have been so different if that freekick had gone in. Tiote is a liability. How many times did he give the ball away? Thank god we;re through, few!

What a result. Pardew is right – we’ve knocked out one of the strongest teams left…but no easy games left in this competition now. Enjoy it lads, dust yaselves off and beat Wigan this weekend. Stevey Taylor – what a performance. Man of the match by a mile. Marveaux, Santon, good games too. Campbell must have had the best week of his life. Bright future for that lad.

Saylor was a tank, Marv was class.
Felt a bit sorry for Campbell, did look lost but its not like we were playing to his game, he wasn’t going in behind to use his pace, they did seem to be reluctant to pass to him.
England’s loss is our gain, saylor = beast

74 Charlietoon // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:18 PM
Great Victory. I think Campbell was sent on not to be a striker but to give us some real pace in the middle of the field. You could see that he was reluctant to run with the other two up front and only let himself get close to the box when there was some other players around him. If he was following the instructions he was given by Pards he was very disciplined and did not want to leave a giant hole in midfield just so he could get a shot at goal.

I can’t believe you guys having a go at Campbell. IMO in both tonights game and against Stoke he showed good, smart movement and could’ve been used a lot more. I was embarassed to see our “senior players” ignore his runs. Shocking.
He’s also an Owen-esque player, and should not be used wide or behind the striker. His diagonal runs will cause defenders problems if used properly. He’s got every right to show the other players his frustration when they don’t pass him the ball and instead decides to shoot or waste the ball.
Blaming Campbell for our failure of ending this game earlier is just shocking, as it was our “senior players” sho wasted the ball, missed simple passes and crosses and had terrible movement. We use too much time on the ball and can’t pass it properly.
I’ve got high hopes for Campbell, as I find his playing style different from our other strikers. The worry that I have is that the team doesn’t have the brains to use him to his potential.
86 santonthenewmaldini // Mar 14, 2013 at 10:21 PM
Was a tough tough game we started poorly and actually looked better when Cabaye went off hope his injury is not bad but would actually quite like it if he was not to go away with France as he is looking a bit jaded
We started to take control and then they started to foul us quite a bit as a lot of teams do as we cant score from set pieces but the guy deserved to go he was lunging in all the time!
People also need to take a reality check Willian and Eto cost almost more than the whole of our 24 man squad and they had Guus Hiddink managing!Think we done quite well to get through
Pardew changed the tactics at half time and the only real chance they had was that free kick at the end but we were worthy of the win although we really do need to work on our crossing as it was terrible for most of it
Cisse again feeding on total scraps the whole game and then the one real quality cross in the game he scores same as Stoke 2 chances in 2 games with 2 goals and we say he is off form?
Taylor was immense seems the England snub inspired him but could not care if he ever gets called up as think England games could mean he gets injured
Marveux was immense he worked hard to win the ball tracked back , skinned players and set up chances and has another assist he has more than Arfa and Cabaye now i think?!We really need to find a way to get him in the no 10 role for a bit Sissoko is good there but he does not have the final ball that Marveux has
Santon and Haidara looked a bit lost in the 1st half but 2nd half both of them played well got forward and put Anzhi under pressure
Just hope we don’t get Spurs or Chelsea next round as would rather get them later when Arfa is back fit hopefully

@roshan MAGPIE at least im honest enough to qualify my criticism of campbell by admitting ive only seen limited footage of him. The general iq level of certain fans here is astonishingly low. Rather than outline what they disagree with they accuse me of not being a fan. Why? because i hold a position contrary to theirs. Obertan would have been 10X better than Campbell today. He may have potential for the future but as of now he is a limited player from what ive seen of him . Today he looked like a schoolboy strolling around whining at not being given the ball. This in a Europa league knock out tie! It was shocking. He may come good and if he does i will gladly eat humble pie in his honor but for now he strikes me as nothing but a ginger hype job

toonarmydownsouth – Spot on mate Jonas had a cracking game tonight and I’ve been a massive critic of his this season. His performance meant we didn’t miss Cabaye (but still, hope it’s not a bad injury – we WILL miss him if it is.) On a separate note it beggars belief people are slating Campbell on here. WTF guys? We’ve just knocked out a bloody good team to get to the quarter finals in Europe. Also, the lad did nowt wrong! He was bright and it’s not his fault he didn’t get passed to. I disagree with people saying Campbell doesn’t look ready. He was making fantastic runs into space and nobody from our midfield had the vision to pick him out. If they start passing him the ball we actually might get a better idea of what he can do. Great win tonight, not the best performance but great result. And Marveaux and Taylor were fantastic. Can’t wait to see Marveaux, HBA, Sissoko and Cabaye in the same team

I have to agree leave Campbell alone he made some great runs into space and our senior players seemed nervous about passing to him and I hope to see Marv carry on this form that’s two great balls for cisse in two games , cisse is disparate for better service and if he gets it watch the goals flow, fingers crossed cabaye is ok though
105 boreddrummer // Mar 15, 2013 at 5:40 AM
Don’t know how anyone can vote Marveaux or Cisse – they wouldn’t have had the chance to pinch the game for us in the first place were it not for Steven Taylor, a lesson in true commitment to any player out there, absolutely fantastic.
