Cabaye So Sensible – Likely To Start Tomorrow

1:50 pm, Saturday, March 16th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 155 Comments

Yohan Cabaye, the 27 year-old Frenchman, experienced some shooting pains in his groin on Thursday night against Anzhi Makhachkala, and as a precaution he came off after 37 minutes, and Jonas Gutierrez substituted for the central midfielder, and played quite well.

yohan cabaye saints

Yohan Cabaye – will start tomorrow?

And it seems because of Yohan being sensible and not risking things on Thursday, the French International should be OK for tomorrow’s important game at Wigan.

Cabaye had a double surgery on his groin in late November, and that seems to have done the trick, but Yohan still has to be careful of it- just in case.

This is what Yohan told the French Daily L’Equipe today:

“This is the adductor, but not the same place.” “I felt some shooting pain.” “We played a lot of matches recently and this may be a reason.”  ”Before the meeting with Anzhi I felt fine. and I do not think it is too serious.”

Yohan has 25 appearances this season to go with the 38 appearances he made last season, and he has 11 goals, with six goals this season.

We hope Yohan is OK for tomorrow’s game,  because we need his generalship and an eye for a goal tomorrow afternoon, when we’ll be without his French team-mate Ben Arfa – who will be out for the rest of the season with his groin injury.

Let’s hope Yohan can start tomorrow.

Comments welcome.

gotta be villa reading qpr going down

  • 2 Jonny // Mar 16, 2013 at 1:56 PM

QPR have some good fixtures and some good players. Sunderland have a horrible fixture list and their team is not as good as Qpr.

  • 3 Alan Pas-de-clue // Mar 16, 2013 at 1:59 PM

i havent seen sunderlands fixture list

my ideal 3 going down would be villa qpr sunderland but then we wouldnt have derby next year

  • 4 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:17 PM

I really hope Sunderland – one of my favorite games to watch at SJP (mind you on telly of course lol)

…Villa and QPR to go down for me; I think it might happen and I honest to God hope it happens :-)

  • 5 FatmanJoe // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:20 PM

I think Reading made a shocking decision sacking their gaffer this close to the end. They had goals in them but now I think they’re a certainty to go down. Hope Villa join them and I expect that to happen.

Then it’s between Southampton, Wigan and QPR for me. We don’t know which QPR team will ever show up. A few weeks ago I would have thought it was too late for them but now I fear they might escape.

I hope it’s QPR, Villa and Wigan but I think it’ll be Reading, Villa and Southampton.

in the summer i think a striker and a cb to replace colo are needed, edin dzeko anyone?

  • 7 FatmanJoe // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:22 PM

We’ve got some really hard fixtures too. Probably the worst fixtures for any team in the bottom. But I can’t see that happening…

  • 8 FatmanJoe // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:32 PM

TAP TAP… is this thing on?!

  • 9 bills-son // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Alan -pas, I actually think Sissoko has played better in his last 2/3 games than he did when he was scoring in the first 2/3. Against Chelsea he was absolutley anonymous in the first half and did nothing in the second until hevmade that run down the right wing against Cole. Yes he scorec and has some magic moments but, similiar to the Villa game, he was out of the game for long periods.

However, the more he’s played in the forward position the more he and the team have adapted to it and he”ll keep getting better imo. He had a tremendous game against Swansea except for his final ball and if he puts that type of all action display in regularly with a good final ball he’ll be one of our most influential playrs – especially when he has HBA to link with.

  • 10 Bambams // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:34 PM

We need to keep picking up points especially against the teams around us….Only once we are safe will i start hoping who will go down.

I would be surprised if Cabaye plays against Wigan, this is a problem we have had in the past – bringing players back too early.

Our defence looks good at the minute, put that down to the brilliant Maps and great adopted local lad Tayls….

  • 11 Alan Pas-de-clue // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:34 PM

billson i feel the last couple of matches his performances have faded and i didnt watch the swansea match, my main point was that i would rather see him further back and cabaye further forward to provide

  • 12 Bambams // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:36 PM

On the Sissoko issue, a good mate of mine who i work with is ex toon goalkeeper and according to the craic in the club Sissoko is the fittest player they have ever seen !

  • 13 toonLYF // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:37 PM

Sissoko is nice like, i’d totally date him.

  • 14 Super Magpie // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:39 PM

    FatmanJoe
I’d say that 6/9 are winnable. The only game I would write off is Man City. Anything could happen against Arsenal and Liverpool.
I’d expect us to beat Wigan,Fulham,Mackems, QPR and West ham and probably draw with WBA, although our EL involvement could have an effect.

We should be aiming for 10th and obviously to beat Benfica which will be very difficult. They haven’t lost in the league this season so we’ll be underdogs once again.

  • 15 NUFC_LEAZES END // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:40 PM

wow I wish our atmosphere at st james was as good as goodison park today!!
    that’s what I call electric

  • 16 kenzie // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:42 PM

This is good news because we will need cabs for the euro games, which by the way will be our strictest so far. A few stats, Benfica have not lost for 29 games in all competitions, are top of their league without a loss(ok i know its portugal but still) are just as capable home and away. They can score for fun, held barcelona to a draw away. If we can beat these then we have a very good chance of lifting the cup.

  • 17 Super Magpie // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Sissoko’s performances have dropped off a little. I think it’s because he’s basically played 90 minutes every 3/4 days for the past 6 weeks.
The pace of the Pl is different to Ligue 1 so he could just be tired.

Hopefully he doesn’t play much for France over the next two weeks so he can get a rest.

  • 18 FatmanJoe // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:43 PM

I think we’ll struggle tomorrow. Someone pointed out earlier that Wigan always raise their game against us – probably given a pay incentive by their bitter owner!

I’d take a draw and no more injuries TBH.

The others you pointed out should be winnable but then we always play like dog turd against teams we should beat!

  • 19 Alan Pas-de-clue // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:44 PM

I don’t. Their fans must whinge at everything at doesn’t go their way. They act like total brats, expecting everything to go for them.

    LEAZES…

you’ve just became my least favourite poster. Everton fans make more noise shouting at the ref than they do cheering for a goal. Bunch of mugs, i hate them more than Sunderland/Liverpool/Manu, by far.

  • 22 FatmanJoe // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:49 PM

Apart from travelling big distances I’m not sure why everyone was so overjoyed about Benfica. I think they’re one of the hardest teams left!

It would have been boring but I’d definitely have preferred Chelsea or Spurs.

At least we’ll get a bit of sunshine tho.

  • 23 Super Magpie // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:49 PM

    FatmanJoe
I expect us to win, but wouldn’t be surprised if we lost. If we turn up we’ll win. We have a better team than them. Their home form is awful so it gives us a chance to pick a rare away win.

I just hope we don’t slack off because of Thursday.

  • 24 toonLYF // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:50 PM

  • 27 FatmanJoe // Mar 16, 2013 at 2:53 PM

I think we could beat citeh. They haven’t got much to play for now.

We are much better than Wigan player for player but I think Martinez is a cracking manager and will have them well organised.

    We’ll see. |Should be a good game.

St James geography is a tough thing to grasp lets all just relax a bit lads. Though Everton atmosphere over Newcastle’s? Everton have been on their best season for ages and we hit a heck of a wall this season but Id say Towns noise beats out the blue scousers even considering the circumstances

  • 36 NUFC_LEAZES END // Mar 16, 2013 at 3:51 PM

I was only saying I wish our atmosphere would be like evertons TODAY, not saying evertons atmosphere is generally better than ours.

which if it was us that beat man city with 10 men, im sure our atmosphere would be twice as loud as theres, with 50,000 geordies roaring.

and yeah i’d prefer to see everton win games, rather than, Liverpool, man city, man utd, arsenal, and obviously sunderland,
as they are a genuine team, a bit like us, they don’t get multimillions pumped into their team every transfer window, but still make the most of the money they get, which I respect them for :)

well what do you expect? They beat Man City 2-0. If we done that you’d be to hear St James’ from literally a mile off.

Everton fans are my least favourite in the league, due to their constant moaning and their newly taken on mentality that they should win every game, and boo their players off when they don’t. Disgusting.

    debuchy saylor m’biwa haidara
    ———-perch– tiote———-

  • 64 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Mar 16, 2013 at 4:26 PM

    Jesper

Just been a casual observer for a long time, soaking up the atmosphere from a safe distance haha pleased with the recent up turn in performances although I would like to see more invention and dynamism from an offensive standpoint so we can assert ourselves over lesser capable teams i.e Stoke last Sunday, but I think that will come as this team gets more used to each other.

4-3-3 seems the most likely, don’t think Cabaye will be risked so I can see Jonas slotting straight in there, not sure if Marv will start despite his good performance on Thurs so I can see Gouffran in for him and Debuchy at RB with Santon back on the left. Haidara was exposed at times at LB but think he will take Santon’s LB spot next season.

    Predictions?

it certainly was….but can that be excused in todays climate? I kind of think it can. Although it may be a little hypocritical due to the way NUFC supporters handled the Ba situation. Personally, i accepted and respected Ba’s decision (and wasn’t too bothered anyway as i prefer Cisse). Going by that i would welcome Remy here.

I’d tend to err on the side of caution with regards Cabaye, especially with the news of Ben Arfa so wrap him up in cotton wool, keep him on the bench unless we really need him and give the arm band to Saylor and we should be ok against a very hot/cold Wigan side.

Yo, don’t want to saw it’s good to be back just yet, testing the water for a while haha

I’d tend to agree with you but might tinker with it a little if I may. I was talking to my mate about Anita and we seemed to think that Anita is too light to be playing CDM to I wouldn’t mind seeing him pushed farther forward in a CAM position as I think he has the passing range to work well there.

Take Jonas and play him in the deep lying playmaker role as he hasn’t got the legs to do much else and allow Sissoko to roam with Gouffran running the channels and playing in just behind Cisse would be my preference.

  • 76 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Mar 16, 2013 at 4:50 PM

    Leazes

I’d like to see Saylor be given VC duties after Cabaye but I think Saylor believes that he doesn’t need the armband to be the leaded of this team. The man bleeds black and white and if he could manage more than 20 games a season he would be an England regular.

I was shocked Tiote was given it too but maybe it is an incentive to make him realise his responsibilities in this squad, that he is expected to lead and as such has to be smart and responsible in his decision making as he certainly wasn’t given the armband for his leadership on the field.

Either way I just want all our players to play like eleven captains, to give their all for the cause.

Drop the act, hold your hands up, and then maybe we’ll work from there?

Could work but I think Cisse needs the support of having Sissoko right behind him otherwise he might as well not be on the pitch

I dont think Anita is attacking minded enough to play as a CAM most of his passes are to the defense rather than the attacker and he doesn’t look forward enough for that to change imo

heres a debate for yous lot

who do yous want to go down and why??

    me personally, I want

QPR- because I hate harry redknapp and because they robbed loic remy off us by showing him extra cash, and because remy chose them over us for the same reason

VILLA- because they sent us down in 2009, and would love to see there faces when they’ve been relegated.

READING – Purely because they clearly don’t have the quality to stay in the premier.

only reason why I haven’t put sunderland in their is because of derby day :)

    Leazes

Well if every single player had the effort and endeavor of Saylor then we would certainly have provided better fare than the first half of the season served up. The problem wasn’t that the fringe players weren’t good enough (albeit, they weren’t as good as we thought them to be), it was that they largely didn’t give enough.

Abeid, Sameobi, Tav were all given chances in the side and just didn’t perform. The only youngster who acquitted himself with any dignity was Bigi, purely because the guy was willing to put everything on the line. Maybe this attitude was fostered in him by playing in the Championship and maybe our youngsters need this experience in order to develop.

But I am pleased with the upturn in attitude from a lot of our players. The workrate of Gouffran makes a refreshing change from seeing Obertan ambling around the field like a headless chicken, and despite his recent good performances Marv is still way too lazy as demonstrated by the first leg in Anzhi so hard working attitude is what I want to see.

Maybe with a little bit of quality too :P

I too had expectations of the youngster that simply wasn’t matched by their own performances ( mainly haris vuckic ).

ive always been one for loaning out youngsters in the championship, just so they build up their grit and determination, it gives them a bit of that ‘English spirit’.

yeah gouffran has worked his socks off for us, aswell as sissoko.
people like obertan and anita need to watch and learn when it comes to determination and commitment, as they are lacking it

  • 91 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Mar 16, 2013 at 5:06 PM

    Yo

He’s defensive minded purely due to the position he takes on the field, I think if he was given a different role i.e to unlock defenses, he has the ability to thread the ball in order to do that. I would at least like to see him try it to show if it is a possibility because I know he has good technique but I fail to see where he really fits into the team. Perch is a much better CDM and has decent passing range, Tiote is an animal at CDM with an ok passing range and Anita is an average CDM due to his lightweight frame which makes it hard for him to get space to pass the ball.

You may be right about Cisse needing support, his first touch isn’t good enough to truly play him on his own up front. That tactic could work with Shola up front…but I am not too keen on that idea haha

  • 92 toonLYF // Mar 16, 2013 at 5:09 PM

    Ruddy…

If QPR go down, which is looking very likely now, he may have to take a wage cut if he wants to play football at all next season! I can’t see too many clubs being in for him, and if we are, i can’t see too many more appealling clubs than ours.

I think the club will, or maybe already have put in around a 50kpw deal on the table if QPR go down, and he can take it or leave it.

  • 123 t00ntime // Mar 16, 2013 at 7:03 PM

Saw some people commenting on remy earlier so i thought i wud give my 2cents.

When remy had to choose he had no bond with either club. Redknapp had just joined QPR and their results were looking better than ours (think we had just finished our losing streak). From an outside prespective neither club was really better than the other (other than fanbase size). So if i get offered 2jobs exactly the same but one pays double money, i wud of gone to QPR too.
Of course we can all thank remy for that because missing out on him forced us to move quickly on sissoko and co. I wudnt call him greedy though.
Now IMO if QPR go down (fingers crossed) an remy becomes available for half price/free (like rumours say) i wud take him 100% for 5mil, He is lethal and has pace that wud help us on the counter.

Which brings me to my favorite 3 to go down.
    Villa, QPR, sunderland
(villa for weimann, great player. Qpr for remy, sunderland…….. U know why)
But lookin at the table the most likely if any team to get out the bottom 3 is QPR. So i wud rather villa kept winning and QPR went down than QPR escaping an villa go down. (cause i want remy more than weimann)

And thats MO on it all. Lol

  • 124 Harley // Mar 16, 2013 at 7:10 PM

    Toontime

    I agree on remy.

Anyone who says they wouldn’t have chosen an extra 30k a week is lying (or insane).
It’s not as if we’re a Man U or man city where we can offer champions league every season guaranteed.

I’d love qpr to get relegated and go back in for him at a cheaper price than first agreed. He’d take a wage cut I’m sure to stay in the premiership.

He took a gamble going to qpr and he’s totally entitled to that. But with a bit of luck it won’t pay off.

Remy on a deal similar to Ba?

Free transfer, sign on fee, minimum release clause of £10m?

  • 128 Lucky Les // Mar 16, 2013 at 7:35 PM

If we are playing on a Thursday in Europe namely 11th April will we still be playing in the Premier League against Sunderland on Saturday 13th April at lunch time or will it be moved to Sunday?

  • 129 bollance // Mar 16, 2013 at 7:37 PM

    I will explain why..

Ok Remy shunned us and MA so that might scupper the deal.

We have a large French contingent already.

Remy will have suiters on a free transfer so we need to offer him something and with him ££ talks. So min release clause of £10m with him picking up 10%, for example.

What is in it for us. We get another player looking for big pay day like Ba.

Downside. Although he will work hard he could be equally greedy like Ba. Also we can only make £9m out of deal, but that would be a good return?

  • 130 bollance // Mar 16, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Another player playing for a big pay day. Ba put his heart and soul into getting his move, but never passed to Cisse.

  • 131 bollance // Mar 16, 2013 at 7:40 PM

This is how these footballers now work. Pay day for signing on a free transfer then another pay day for being sold to another team. I think Diame of WH is another example

  • 132 toonbrother // Mar 16, 2013 at 8:00 PM

we need carroll back on tyneside. A striker capable of playing with his back to goal. I’d take him over remy or dzecko not because he is a fundamentally better player but because he fills an existing void in our squad perfectly. last thing we want is another ba cisse situation where the players are good but too similar to play together

  • 133 toonbrother // Mar 16, 2013 at 8:05 PM

Momo sissoko is a fine player but i am beginning to think he is not compatible with cabaye at least not when he is deployed as a support striker. His natural instinct is to drop too deep and occupy the space cabaye does his best work in. In the end we end up having a cluttered midfield thats less than a sum of its parts. Pardew needs an alternative formation that gets the best out of both players.

  • 138 toonbrother // Mar 16, 2013 at 8:15 PM

    @bollance who’s campbell?

i think momo is an excellent player already. His final ball is already pretty good. One cant expect every attempted killer pass to be a killer pass. Personally i think his only problem is his over-eagerness to make things happen. He needs to learn to be patient and play to keep possession not charge at the opposition at every opportunity. The point i was making was his natural instinct to drift into cabaye’s territory forcing yohan further back into defensive midfield. Cabaye is wasted when he is forced so deep.

Simple way to solve the Sissoko debate is to have Marveux play as the no 10 and play Sissoko out wide right he always ends up going down our right hand side in games and doing well

OR Take Tiote out the team and put Sissoko in his position with Cabaye a sort of link between defence and Marveux one of our main problems the last few games is that Tiote is the man collecting the ball off the defenders and most of the time its a waste

We are 10 points above Reading and QPR which taking goal difference into account basically means that to pass our current total of 33 points they are going to have to win 4 of their remaining 8 games and if we were to win 2 games of our remaining 9 (which should not be impossible) they would have to win 6 which would be brilliant form which is not going to happen.I assume those 2 will be below us in the league. The third relegation place is more problematical and this is why tomorrow’s game is so important. If we could win we could be 12 points clear of Wigan although they would have 9 games left.If we lose the relegation fight is back on with several clubs involved for the third relegation place and the question of how many points will be needed will arise. Will 40 points be enough this season ?
