With both Mathieu Debuchy and Massadio Haidara injured in yesterday’s game, and Massadio likely to be out a while with a serious injury, that puts some pressure on the Newcastle full back positions.
Danny Simpson – could still do a job for Newcastle
The good news, if that’s the right way to put it, is that Newcastle still have good cover at full-back and James Perch can do a good job at right back – or left back for that matter, and of course Vurnon Anita also played a season at left back for Ajax and he can also be effective there.
And we cannot forget Danny Simpson, who has gone down the pecking order at Newcastle, with Danny’s future not being at Newcastle, and he will be leaving as a free agent in the summer.
But Danny came in for a couple of our European ties recently, and played extremely well, and of course he’s also an experienced Premier League player and it is now likely he will get some playing time when the football resumes again in two weeks time, following the International break.
Danny can still do a job for Newcastle – and that’s what he’s paid to do (still) – and it will also be in Danny’s best interests too, as he tries to attract some London clubs that could sign him in the summer.
Fulham is one of those clubs, and Danny may yet prove valuable to Newcastle in the final couple of months of this season.
And the two injuries picked up yesterday also will beg the question about how is our captain Fab Coloccini is doing with his back injury – because if he can come back, Newcastle have the option of playing Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at right back too.
For the record Danny Simpson has played 133 times for Newcastle with two goals since joining us back in the summer of 2009.
We are still waiting to hear just how bad Massadio’s injury is – with no information word yet on the Newcastle web-site.
