Well I predicted this would happen, and the FA have decided to take no action against Wigan player McManaman, after his terrible horror tackle on Massadio Haidara left the lad in a heap, clutching his badly damaged knee.
FA take no action on this tackle – ridiculous
The door was open for the FA t take some action, because referee Mark Halsey had said he didn’t see the incident, because his view was blocked.
But the FA have just confirmed that the incident was seen by at least one of the match officials – even though referee Mark Halsey didn’t see it – and that means they can take no action.
Phew – that was a close one.
And the official who saw the tackle thought it was perfectly fair?
This is the statement issued by the FA:
“The FA can confirm that no action can be taken against Wigan Athletic’s Callum McManaman retrospectively following his side’s game against Newcastle United on Sunday 17 March 2013.
“Following consultation with the game’s stakeholders [the Premier League, the Football League, the Professional Footballers’ Association, the League Managers’ Association, Professional Game Match Officials Limited and the National Game] in the summer, it was agreed that retrospective action should only be taken in respect of incidents which have not been seen by the match officials.
“Where one of the officials has seen a coming together of players, no retrospective action should be taken, regardless of whether he or she witnessed the full or particular nature of the challenge. This is to avoid the re-refereeing of incidents.
“In the case of McManaman, it has been confirmed that at least one of the match officials saw the coming together, though not the full extent of the challenge. In these circumstances retrospective action cannot be taken. The principal objective behind the not seen policy is to address off the ball incidents where match officials are unlikely to be in a position to witness misconduct.”
That’s just a load of tripe.
And that’s what the FA do all the time – wiggle out of their responsibilities – and that’s why you may have noticed I’ve never been a big fan of the FA – they never show any courage when it’s needed – they simply will not make the tough decisions.
Any normal body would look at the video, and see it was one of the worst tackles seen on a football field, and it seems to have badly injured the Newcastle player – but once again they opted out of their responsibilities.
Here’s what I said in one of the articles this morning:
It’s not clear whether the FA will do anything about the tackle, and certainly they haven’t done much in the past with similar types of tackles, and apparently at least one of the officials at the game saw the tackle – how come they didn’t all see it?
If we were to take a guess we’d say the FA will come out and say there is nothing they can do, and they are not going to referee the games and undermine match officials.
If that happens it will only make things a lot worse, and it’s not about undermining officials – it’s about putting things right that were rather amazingly missed during the match.
Some readers will say it’s nice to get something right now and again. 😀
We’ve also noticed that no statement has yet been made on Haidara by Newcastle, and we’re even hoping he hasn’t damaged his knee ligaments – and that would be excellent news for the youngster and for Newcastle – here’s hoping they have delayed the good news until the FA released their decision.
Newcastle may even come out with their own statement on this ridiculous stance taken by the FA.

Comment #82I will put it another way ..there are rules within Football that say you cannot act in a way to cause injury or danger to an opponent on the pitch ..so really it is not acceptable and against the rules on the pitch
there is also the fact that they are in a place of work and there is a common law of the land that you cannot inflict violence on anyone in a place of work .or out of it !.Football is seen as a contact sport but its against the football laws to contact any player in a violent Manner..
I cannot take this in JOhn Carver has been Banned as we Know ..Am I living in a universe where I am making up my own surroundings and events ..IS this all real ..Am I dreaming ..this is absurd man !. iM off to watch a Genesis gig from 1972-3 ish when Pete was Still there and wearing his funny hats ..I need some reality here ! haha !

Gotta love the FA. Seems that they have a serious bone to pick with NUFC.
It’s almost like they are encouraging us to go down, and Wigan to stay up….
This decision to not act against Mcmanaman, and charge Carver is infuriatingly naive, and hypocritical by the FA. I would love to drone on about the inadequecies of that august organization, but I shant.
Instead, going to put my efforts into supporting Massadio Haidara on his recovery.
Ahhh, f*** it…the FA can take a long walk off a short pier.

Comment #90This whole situation is absolutely laughable. all we can do is refuse to play any more matches where any of the officials at wigan are refereeing, and swallow the rest with dignity, and wish sadio a speedy recovery.
what we dont need is mindless morons sending death threats and the like, giving the club a bad name

Comment #93This must mean the referee and linesman are now unable to officiate games again, if they did not action the tackle then they are inept, blind not capable.
I do think that Callum Mcmnanan will now have to watch his back both off and on the field!!

Comment #96Send a complaint to the FA. Let them know that the rules they have now are not in the good of the game and are against general opinions of fans.

Comment #100I just don’t understand the rule.
They cannot take action if the ref or official saw it. Fine stick to that if they want.
But why can they then take action if a player is given a red to over turn it? Surely if it can be overturned if it wasnt a foul it should be overturned if it was and not spotted properly.

Please don’t try and reduce Ibiza to your level. I value his opinion and respect him and he has not joined in the kangaroo court practices you and a few others have perpetrated. I don’t suffer from a dark side and like others you seek to discredit am happy to get on with my life. I am not personally at odds with you but regret that you found it necessary to join in the fun at the expense of bloggers who are NUFC

Comment #106Something I have done before in controversial circumstances is to contact the FA via their website to express my views about their actions. It’s quite easy to do so perhaps if loads of us contact them explaining our disbelief and anger at the decision then they will at least begin to see just how many people are losing faith in them!
It’s absolutely ridiculous to not punish him for this and I hope that we do end up suing and get as much money as we can, but even that is no consolation for Haidara.

Comment #107I wonder ..do you think we will have an easy time signing young French players ..or any overseas young player. Will they choose to come here now ? when they see that they get no protection against being maimed by English thugs on the pitch? No protection against that ,from the English FA ..

Comment #108tooninspain – because I see tackles like this a lot! Some just miss the player, some result in fouls or a card, most do not result in serious injury. But they are all dangerous. These kinds of tackles only get highlighted when someone gets seriously injured from them.
His second foot was trailing, he didn’t go in with both feet.
Google “newcastle tackle high” and as well as the Haidara issue, you’ll see pictures of similar challenges by Raylor, Nolan, Cabaye, Smith and others.

Rules are meant to be there for a pratcial purpose. This is simply how any bereaucracy works. Rules which have not purpose are just there for the sake of being there.

Comment #113personally, and this may through the cat amongst the pigeons, i think anitas challenge was just as bad.
however the difference is i would have had no complaints at a retrospective ban for him for that tackle.
my main issue is with the lack of class in all involved at wigan and the lack of transparency at the fa
Mcmanaman didnt have the decency to even apologise until forced by boyce
both martinez and whelan ludicrously defended him.
the fa can retrospectively overturn a red card, but cannot issue a punishment- this makes no sense
they can retrospectively punish carver, even though the ref ‘dealt with this’ at the match.
farcical

Comment #114I’d just like to reiterate that important point. Tackles like this happen frequently, it’s just that they are highlighted when someone gets seriously injured. It doesn’t mean they shouldn’t result in a ban though, they should. And retrospective punishment should be given regardless of whether it was (partially) seen or not.
Seriously, Google “newcastle tackle high” and as well as the Haidara images, you’ll see pictures of similar challenges by Raylor, Nolan, Cabaye, Smith and others. You’ll see one of these in almost every game, although most do not result in injury because they either don’t make proper contact with the player, or if they do they don’t result in injury because the other player’s foot isn’t planted on the ground.

Comment #119The time is right to set up another footballing governing body in which video evidence etc can be used.
The prem and all other leagues which have tv coverage should leave the FA and sign up, Sky and other tv companies would probably follow as it would highlight the quality of football broadcasts.
I hated the FA before today and hate them even more now, I liked Wigan before Sunday as well as Martinez (Hated Whelan anyway though) now I hope they drop through the leagues like a proverbial stone and both of their fans end up watching Wigan vs Telford (no disrespect to Telford) Hope Sadio is going to be ok though, hopefully this will galvanize the team and instill a them vs us mentality.
