There’s some sad and disappointing news today, that Newcastle fans who went to Wigan for the game last Sunday, have caused trouble at a local football game before the Wigan – Newcastle match even started.
Newcastle fans running riot at Wigan Cosmos FC
The news is that fans disrupted some local amateur matches that were being played near the away end of Wigan Athletic’s DW Stadium before the Premier League game started.
They are accused of running onto the pitch while the game was in progress, dropping their trousers, ripping out the nets and attempting to break the goals by hanging on the crossbars, and then going on Twitter and YouTube to broadcast their destruction.
The game was between Wigan Cosmos and AFC Leigh Centurions in the South Lancashire Counties League, and this is what a Cosmos spokesman said.
“As the supporters spilled out of the coaches, which were not managed by the club or police officials, they proceeded to watch the game from the touch-line.” “Some fans then chose to run on to the field of play, dropping their pants, causing the game to be stopped.”
“The situation then magnified as a crowd of around 250 to 300 Newcastle United fans followed suit. Although good-natured at first, the fans then started to rip out corner flags as they ran over the pitches and also took the match ball. We never recovered the ball, though we did manage to recover the corner flags.”
“The so-called fans then decided to charge over to the adjacent pitch where Goose Green Reserves were entertaining Olympic AFC in another South Lancashire Counties fixture. They again began by ripping out their corner flags.” “The fans then charged into the goalmouth, jumping on to the goalposts in an attempt to snap the crossbar with the sheer numbers clambering on them.”
“They then started to rip the nets from the posts, tearing them and trying to take them. Our players helped to retrieve the nets.” “After spending quite some time singing and hanging on the goalposts, the fans then ran back over to our pitch whilst singing ‘We’re Newcastle United, we’ll do what we want’.”
“Once again I would like to stress that, despite the obvious scenes developing, no support was provided from the authorities.” “This incident was a very distasteful experience that lasted for over 40 minutes and with families, dads, grand-dads and youngsters all watching the games as well as some quite experienced players who were all left shaken.”
““The fact that these same fans have taken to Twitter and YouTube to boast about the incident and in fact revel in it, showing no signs of remorse, is possibly even more disturbing.” “Not only have they cost my football team a great deal of expense but they have shown a total disrespect to football itself.”
Here is where you can read the fuller report from Wigan Cosmos on the riotous Newcastle fans – and it includes photos down the right hand side, and there is some later news that a Newcastle representative communicated with the Wigan Cosmos club, and this is what the Wigan Cosmos club said about that communication:
“Newcastle United are aware of the incident following a number of complaints that they had received and that the matter was now being dealt with by the Wigan Police.” “Newcastle United accept and are aware that they have a minority of fans intent on causing trouble and are working with the Police to identify these fans, and were passing on any information and complaints to the Police – and because of the Wigan away allocation there was a larger number of travelling away supporters”.
We hope the police get involved and track down the offenders – and then Newcastle should take appropriate action against all of the perpetrators – which we can hardly call fans.
We cannot have these hooligans damaging the good name of Newcastle United, and carrying out this stupid vandalism while attending Newcastle’s away games.

Comment #41G…There is the whole police argument, that is a given, but it is a different matter. Are people not accountable for their own actions? If they need babysitting perhaps they shouldn’t leave home.

Comment #42Ibiza, it isn’t how it works at all, but wouldn’t it be nice of McManaman to actually do something pleasant for a change.

These idiots ARE fans. Thats the whole point. They are are ‘us’. They are just the idiots amongst us. Unfortunately there are always a minority. I live in london and take stick of Chelsea, Spuds, Arsenal and Man U fans all the time but the one thing I always get them on is that we have the BEST fans. Then this happens. We’ve been shamed. Their behaviour makes me sick.

Comment #45G….I really don’t want to feel that I’m starting to defend McManaman, but issues are getting crossed here 🙂
Apart from the tackle (and yes, reports that he did a similar thing in a youth game against City a while ago) and the fact he didn’t apologise straight away, how are we coming to the assumption that he doesn’t do anything pleasant?
This whole thing has been a complete mess, however, NUFC were able to hold their heads high as they dealt with then whole situation with absolute dignity, unlike Wigan.
I’d like the FA to deal with McManaman (which they haven’t or wont), but really this has got nothing to do with him. We can’t find a way to offset one against the other, it just stinks imo.
Sorry If I’m coming across all grumpy, really not trying to start anything with you 🙂

Comment #50All I’m saying is that while this behaviour is undoubtedly idiotic, we see a similar level of stupidity every saturday night in the city centre. There are bigger issues surrounding fan behaviour, racism, stabbings etc.
But ah well I’m clearly in the minority here.
Can we focus instead on congratulating S.Taylor on potentially winning his (well deserved) first cap for England tonight/ Think this has been a long time coming, and a great reward for a player who’s had as many setbacks in his career as he has.

Comment #55Ibiza @ 44, I’m not going to fall out with anybody on here today (I’m trying hard anyway!), my agreement with numba9 was intended to be humourous, which was also the way I read numba9’s post before mine. I don’t think for one minute it would happen, or even be feasable, after all, might as well still blame the scandinavians for the vikings for all the relevance it has. I was quite simply trying to lighten the mood on the blog, as I’m sure many of the comments listed above, are also posted with the same intention.

Comment #56Guys, I know this is off topic, although, I just read an article on Europe’s top 10 most wanted youngsters. I just thought it would be fun to list my top 10 youngsters(22 or under). 😀
1. Neymar
2. Stephan El Shaarawy
3. Mario Gotze
4. Isco
5. Lucas Moura
6. Jack Wilshere
7. Georginio Wijnaldum
8. Romelu Lukaku
9. Luis Muriel
10. Younes Belhanda
Anyone wondering where Hazard is, I don’t like him at all. That Wijnaldum kid looks unbelievable!! I’ve been closely watching PSV over the past two months and Mertens and him have REALLY impressed me!

Comment #58G…I’m all for lightening the mood, hence why I wanted to point out I wasn’t trying to be grumpy. A fair few users of this blog have pointed to Wigans fans response to the Mcmanaman foul and have used it to fuel their anger, just trying to avoid the same happening here, that’s all.
This is far too sensible. Let’s meet at midnight and fight to the death 😉

1. Can we blame pardew for their behaviour?
2. Can we blame pardew for their behaviour?

Comment #65As probably expected this story is now going viral -hitting all the national papers. Several links below:-

The amateur club Wigan Cosmos -wrote to NUFC who told them they would not compensate them for the damage etc.
The staff at SJP missed a major coup here -they should have offered the little club a few hundred quid as a “good will ” gesture (use of “good will” negates any admissions of guilt).
Mike Ashley could have sent them some vouchers -20 or so so they could buy new strips for next season – there are a couple of Sports Direct shops in Wigan – this would have been good PR for the club and for Sports Direct. Could even have had Haidarra sending off a cheque to Wigan Cosmos with a quote along the lines of “At Newcastle United we always try to do the right thing”.
Prior to this story hitting the press we had world sympathy now it will be diminished.
Own goal for the Toon here I’m afraid.

Comment #67ANY and EVERY decent Newcastle United fan who knows someone that was responsible in these actions should give their names to the club and the police.
Pondlife like this only gets all Toon fans a bad name and it’s up to all of us to maintain our reputation as far as possible.
Why should a mindless minority get away with bringing this great club into disrepute?
I hope the police and the club itself take every effort to massively fine and ban the culprits and put their names and photographs in the press.

Comment #69Ibiza… Actually i work in graphic design so i could obviously. However skiving off work to chat on a blog is one thing, skiving to photoshop pardew and colo onto random bodies is another ;). Although i do like that idea could be a good banner for our pardew out campaign.
