Newcastle have a number of younger players out on loan at the moment, players who are in their early twenties, and while they are all playing well at their loan clubs, we wonder if they will be good enough to get contract extensions at Newcastle.
Shane Ferguson – on loan at Birmingham
Sammy Ameobi (20) is at Middlesbrough, Conor Newton (21) and Paul Dummett (21) are at St. Mirren, Shane Ferguson (21) is at Birmingham, Mehdi Abeid (20) is at St. Johnstone and Brad Inman (21) is at Crewe Alexandra.
With the introduction of the five Frenchmen in January, and when you consider the standard of the three latest youngsters Newcastle have brought into the club – Gael Bigirimana, Massadio Haidara and 17 year-old Kevin Mbabu, the standards of all players at Newcastle is improving – including the standards of the younger players.
Of the six players listed above, we would now be surprised if Newcastle kept more than Sammy Ameobi and Shane Ferguson – and even then those two players will need to do well while out on loan.
And we also think that James Tavernier (21) will have to work hard to stay at the club, although he earned a three year deal only last summer.
Most of these players are not really young any more, when you consider Gael is 19 and Massadio is 20, and they have both looked very good when playing in the first team this season..
Newcastle have already terminated the contracts of Xisco and Nile Ranger in January, and Steve Harper will leave the club in the summer when his contract expires.
And Newcastle are expected to bring in four or five top youngsters in their late teens or early twenties this summer, and we are already being linked with some of those players.
Danny Simpson will be leaving when his contract runs out in June, and Newcastle may also look to sell Dan Gosling before his contract runs out next year, and there are rumors that Gabby Obertan wants to return to France to get first team football..
And Newcastle may even listen to offers for some of their younger players in the summer, who still have time left on their current contracts at the club.
It does like there could be big changes in the squad before September rolls around.
What do you think?

Comment #2Inman for me is the best player out of that lot….he has looked pretty good most of the times i have seen him…saying that, at 21 he will have to get his skates on and make a break for the 1st team.

keep the young players for now and have them on loan for a few years at least Mike will receive income from loans deals.

Comment #14Rather give Harper a deal than shola he is prob more influence off the pitch than him I can imagine Steve being very vocal and positive in dressing room. oba to leave don’t think vukic will make it nor Sammy I think Abeid could do tho

Comment #16o.k. sentiment aside (looking at this as whats best for the team more than being loyal)
out ;
gosling
simpson
shola (imo)
harper
ober (although he’s played great for us in europe)
williams
vukic (depending on weather he will take a 1st team spot or is still classes as a youngster)
tavernier (sorry about this lad but we went from very short cover here to having a major upgrade and raylor is tons better than him imo)
thats 8 players out and we would have to see what we sign as a winger and striker imo would be great and ofc if collo goes we need a straight replacement so that would not effect anything.
hard to judge the younger/senior lads though as if senior lvl classed they should be good enough for the 1st team !
newton/dummet/fergie/innman for example need to be assesed this next year as i think there will e space to keep them on if we get rid of those above and replace with some 1st teamers.

Comment #17You cant hang on to young players if they aren’t going to make the grade Man U get rid as soon as its clear they haven’t got it no place for sentiment.Thats the harsh reality of life as a footballer.

Comment #20think shola deserves to stay, hes been here long time and dosent mind being on the bench and scores some important goals he aint on great wages, but we need to ship out them that aint good enough, and are any of our youngsters as good as bigi, harida i think no were near so for me
vulvic
oberton
gosling
tavener
moyo
abied
most of them barr sammy and ferguson 1 more season for them but we wont have eufa cup next season so dont hang on to too many that just arent close
cb in
striker in
goal scoring winger a youg ronaldo
bring in real quality youngsters from germany holland and france
i know alot of you like our kids but they aint took there chances this season, just look at some of the cup games
but most importantly can we please get a ref who lives close to the ground and can train with the team and likes gambling as it appears the ref could be getting you alot more points than the players for a brown envolope lol…

Comment #21This season was stuffed because we didn’t have the quality in depth we thought we had in the youngsters. Youngsters are inconsistent and need games to develop, but you can’t give them that and compete regularly for European places. It seems most of the youngsters, having failed to impressed when called upon were sent out on loan to be tested in more conducive environments and still been found wanting, at least from NUFC’s perspective (most were adequate at their loan clubs, even good at times, but in a much lower quality environment than the EPL).
Do NUFC run the risk of getting rid of them and reducing the size of the squad (less of an issue without European games next year) or have these youngsters already proven that they aren’t going to be good enough anyway. It’s probably a mute point whether NUFC get more youngsters in first, or move on those they have first, as either way, they have got to get a lot more into the club NOW and develop them while the pressure is not as intense. If they wait until they get back into Europe, they will be repeating the same mistake as this campaign. On top of clearing out Simpson, Gosling, Oberton, Williams and saying goodbye to Colloccini, it would seem we may get rid of Sammy Ameobi, Conor Newton, Paul Dummett, Shane Ferguson, Mehdi Abeid, Brad Inman and Vuckic. That leaves a very lean squad and makes for a damn lot of recruitment to undertake. So, where are all these quality youngsters…
