Benfica Win 6-1 On Saturday

12:34 am, Monday, April 1st, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 10 Comments

As soon as we were drawn against Benfica in the quarter finals of the Europa League, I was asked by one of their most popular Benfica fan blogs,  to write an article before the game, telling their fans about Newcastle, who are our  best players,  and things like that for the Benfica fans.

JorgeJesusbenfica manager

Jorge Jesus, 58 year-old Benfica manager

I’ll be writing that article tomorrow and have already told the blog owner we were hammered 4-0 by the reigning Champions Manchester City on Saturday, and that we had seven players out injured, in an effort to lull them into a false sense of security – obviously.

But Benfica seem to be on form, as they hammered mid-table side Rio Ave 6-1 on Saturday and remain four points clear of reigning Champions Porto, at the top of the Portuguese League.

This is what Alan Pardew said about the opposition on Thursday night:

“Benfica are top of the Portuguese league and are going very well. They could be on a par with this City side in terms of quality, but I don’t think anyone else we are going to play will be as good.”

“Benfica are top of the Portuguese league and are going very well. They could be on a par with this City side in terms of quality, but I don’t think anyone else we are going to play will be as good.”

“That gives us more of a chance to win games that remain”

We still stand a decent chance on Thursday night, as long as our players play somewhere near their best form – which is not what happened at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

So there’s the opportunity.

Don’t understand Pardew’s comment – what “gives us more of a chance to win games that remain”?

There is no doubt that they are a good side – when playing Portugese teams!!

The TOOON are a whole different ball game – at least we would be if Pardeaux could field a team who all knew what the game plan was more than 20 minutes before kick off!!

Why do we look so bloody clueless for the first 40 – 60 minutes? Why are we not in their faces from the off? We have enough quality players to give any team a game – why doesn’t it happen, week in, week out??

Got to say i’m tentatively optimistic of a result – perhaps a score draw or a narrow defeat. I think the players are up for the EL – Marv should play, Santon’ll be back, maybe Colo which would allow Mapou to cover right-back (or maybe even a back 5.

    Jesus lives.

Which is more than can be said for our attack.

I hope Pardew puts out a team to give it our best shot. I don’t buy the notion that it PL or EL. I think we have to practice winning and playing well in all our remaining games and that means fielding the best available team each time – and hoping nothing bad happens to Cisse.!

Hi guys, I got my ticket today and we’re looking forward to having you here!! We love playing against english teams, there’s always lots of fans who know how to enjoy football, and it’s a great atmosphere. I’m sure the stadium will be almost full, after all the country is almost bankrupt but people will skip eating to watch Benfica ;) Now seriously, it’s one of the few things that are making people less depressed around here. Even the weather is lousy, it’ll probably be raining thursday. But make sure to come a day earlier and spend some time in Lisbon, it’s a great city with a different feel from other european capitals.

And good luck! We’ve been scoring like crazy lately, but it’ll be a different match and it’s anyone’s game.

pardew really baffles me. The press conf he gave b4 the city match made me think he would attack city from the word go, but it turned out he had just the opposite in mind.
He talked about things like mancini’s mind games wont work on this. WTF.
My advice to pardumb, either you shut it mate or you walk the talk.
