Alan Pardew has made four changes to the Newcastle starting line-up from that which started in the 4-0 defeat at Manchester City On Saturday, for tonight’s first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Benfica at the Estadio da Luz .
James Perch has been brought in at defensive midfield to replace Vurnon Anita, who didn’t have a good game at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, and Tim Krul returns in goal as expected in place of Rob Elliot, who played well in Tim’s absence and further strengthened his position as the number two goalkeeper at Newcastle.
Sylvain Marveaux, now recovered from a slight groin strain starts on the right wing in place of Gabby Obertan, and Davide Santon comes in at left back for Jonas Gutierrez, who moves to the left wing.
Mike Williamson returns to be on the substitute bench, along with 18 year-old Adam Campbell, and Gael Bigirimana is the player left out of the squad tonight.
This is the team we had in the Match Preview except that the reliable James Perch comes in for Vurnon Anita.
It will be important for the team to play well tonight – especially in defense.
