Krul, Perch, Gutierrez And Santon All Start

benficanufc-crest

Alan Pardew has made four changes to the Newcastle starting line-up from that which started in the 4-0 defeat at Manchester City On Saturday, for tonight’s first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Benfica at the Estadio da Luz .

James Perch has been brought in at defensive midfield to replace Vurnon Anita, who didn’t have a good game at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, and Tim Krul returns in goal as expected in place of Rob Elliot, who played well in Tim’s absence and further strengthened his position as the number two goalkeeper at Newcastle.

Sylvain Marveaux, now recovered from a slight groin strain starts on the right wing in place of Gabby Obertan, and Davide Santon comes in at left back for Jonas Gutierrez, who moves to the left wing.

Mike Williamson returns to be on the substitute bench, along with 18 year-old Adam Campbell, and Gael Bigirimana is the player left out of the squad tonight.

This is the team we had in the Match Preview except that the reliable James Perch comes in for Vurnon Anita.

It will be important for the team to play well tonight – especially in defense.

Howay The Lads!!

Teams:

Benfica – Artur; Andre Almeida, Luisao (c), Ezequiel Garay, Melgarejo; Nicolas Gaitan, Nemanja Matic, Andre Gomes; Rodrigo, Oscar Cardozo, Ola John
Substitutes: Paulo Lopes, Roderick, Maxi Pereira, Enzo Perez, Urreta, Pablo Aimar, Lima

Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Davide Santon; James Perch, Yohan Cabaye (c); Sylvain Marveaux, Moussa Sissoko, Jonas Gutierrez; Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Mike Williamson, Vurnon Anita, Dan Gosling, Gabriel Obertan, Shola Ameobi, Adam Campbell

Decent enough. Should be enough to stay in the tie at least. A 1-1 draw would be nice

Cracking line up cannot wait for kick off!!! Have a feeling that cabs is going to score a screamer tonight!
Only downside is when you look at the bench, really highlights the need for investment in the summer…

Simmo oh no, he is shite, my piss has vapourised, unbelievable how an unfit, shite footballer as himself is given a spot instead of Anita full back, Anita should put a transfer request in, to be fair the rest of the team is as good as it gets.

Hope we press the ball and show some energy, if we just defend our own box we will go down. Perchy playing and Tiote being injured is a bonus for me.

Hope it’s not as one sided as the Portuguese expect. If we actually CAN hold onto the ball and pass it around we might have a chance.
An away goal would be invaluable.

Hey to all Portuguese fans, 2 good games of football to look forward to hopefully.

Hopefully we’ll get a draw or at least an away goal.

Poor bench for a European QF.
As Pardew looks around at who to bring on in the last ten minutes, he’ll suddenly realise how we made a profit last year.

Harsh again on Anita. Doesn’t matter about the strength of the bench. The subs he will make are Anita, Shola and Obertan on who are all capable. Would love a score draw, but even a goal and a loss by 1 would put us in a good position.

Not sure what he wants to achieve with playing Simpson. I hope he puts Sissoko or Jonas as rightwing so he gets some help. Marveux in the middle.

Well lads, Gutti playing Right midfield by Sky, makes sense if their left winger is the danger man, cant fault Gutti for workrate and defensive duties, just incapable of keeping the ball and playing pass and move but hey ho at least he is protecting Simmo.

As pessimistic as normal, Chelsea game seems such a long time ago…………………………………..

Happy with that team, best available really.

Sumo isn’t ideal but with no debuchy or Haidara i’d rather have a proper full back and not Anita (part time left back) playing there.

Hopefully the attitude of the team is right, to attack and not sit off and let them get on top of us more than we need to

Whatever happens I intend to enjoy the game.

Ps…fridge – didn’t realise it was an 8 year rolling contract, presumed a rolling contract wouldn’t be a fixed amount of time…my apologies..

    Check

Exactly..:it could work. Rather have guti to help do a job defending than overran who can’t do anything haha.

We aren’t blessed with anyone who can really play wide without Ben arfa and gouff so Jonas will do. Work rate alone shouldnt be the reason somebody is picked but we have few alternatives
