Pardew – We Did So Much Right – Then Gifted Them Goals

10:58 pm, Thursday, April 4th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 47 Comments

Newcastle United played very well against Benfica in Lisbon tonight,  but second half defensive mistakes by Davide Santon and Steven Taylor gave Benfica a 3-1 victory – with Cisse scoring first for Newcastle after just 12 minutes, and he also hit the post in each half – and with any luck Papiss could have had a hat-trick tonight.

e scorss lisbon

Papiss Cisse scores after just 12 minutes

And Alan Pardew was rightly proud of the effort his team put in tonight,  as he had this to say to BBC Sport immediately after the game:

“I thought we did so much right to get into a great position. We had taken the sting out of them, then we gifted them a goal,”

“I thought Steven Taylor was desperately unlucky for the penalty; it just was not to be. I cannot fault the players, it was a great effort. We came here to have a go at them.”

Davide Santon’s disastrous mistake let Benfica in after 66 minutes,  when he tried a pass back from the left-wing to goalkeeper Krul, but substitute Lima was on it like a flash and five minutes later Steven Taylor handled from a corner and Cordozo scored from the penalty spot at the second attempt – after the first conversion was disallowed for encroachment.

This was a good performance from Newcastle, but when Cisse hit the post for a second time a minute into the second half,  you got the feeling this may not be Newcastle’s night.

But we were so much better than that pathetic performance last Saturday – and we gave Benfica a game tonight.

Now we must beat Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

Darkside are those the games where man u are under the cosh or a goal down. No didn’t think so fergie lets them know when things aren’t going as he expects. End of

  • 2 Transfer Sage // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:02 PM

Well I think we did pretty well. We’re the better team for half the first half and then 5 mins in the second.

Both teams were wasteful, we could have had another couple and so could they so the score line is fair to me.

I would say though that in Pardews defence we had very little on the bench for him to use, knowing it would make us stronger. Could have used Campbell, I like him but its no guarantee of improvement with the limited chances he has had so far.

Sometimes good teams just pin you and stop you, benfica did that. If we expect our team to stop them and attack then surely we have to expect a team as good as them to be able to do the same to us.

In general I find us too negative and we don’t attack lesser teams enough (west ham at home being the prime example). But away in benfica no matter how well we do they are capable of matching, if not bettering us.

    Davide Santon is a moron

“End of” So the discussion is over because you deem it to be? Well I suppose that concludes our discussion, however you’ve missed my overriding point that a manager who constantly shouts at his team does not necessarily make him a great leader. Also I’ve seen Pards shout instructions to the lads many times so I think this ridiculous point has been given too much air time. “End of”…

  • 5 Transfer Sage // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:05 PM

    Darkside

For me pardew isn’t inspirational from the touch line. But it was only last year he was praised as a great man manager and a lot liked his cool approach to games.

Whether shouting helps or not I’m not sure the extent…but sometimes I do think some of our lads need a wake up call as they start to coast through games. I’d love a player like Roy keane…not the exact same but somebody on the pitch who is respected and let’s players know the expected standard.

Majority on here must have, again, watched a different match to me.
    They were shite – again.
No effort, drive, desire or leaders. I can safely say the Europa run will end next week and never to return for a long time or until a new manager that can instill belief, drive and a hunger to win and not accept defeat.
Absolute rubbish on display with the exception of the move for the goal.
Alot on here better begin to accept that there is a very big chance of championship football on its way to SJP.
Very annoyed and frustrated yet again.

  • 7 leeb1982 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:07 PM

Darkside- Pardew is totally clueless he reacts when the crowd react. We have such attacking players in our team yet struggle to create. Yes we hit woodwork twice but I don’t think we had a corner tonight compared to there 10+

  • 8 Ben_BKK // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:08 PM

slbfan – Perch, Simpson and Gutierrez would not be usual starters for us if Tiote, Debuchy and Ben Arfa were able to play, as well as Coloccini if he’d been fit.

Your team has a lot more depth, when our best players aren’t fit we don’t have quality replacements to come into the team.

It’s also incredibly annoying that the game was settled by such awful goals. A shocking backpass and Taylor’s idiotic handball gifting Benfica a two goal win. Couple that with Cisse twice hitting the post and it’s a really hard result to take :(

I wouldn’t worry about corners…we have more chance to concede from the counter off it that score from it.

  • 11 Transfer Sage // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:11 PM

Santon is really struggling this season at left back, he isn’t very solid an has too many errors, especially dealing with crosses.

Sure he can improve but would like to see him left or right midfield when Haidara and debuchy are back…will defend and attack better than Jonas.

  • 12 leeb1982 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:11 PM

True sage. But it’s more about intent. We aren’t hitting the byline n pulling back balls. Too negative n too central. Yet nine out of ten times our most creative and damaging player through the middle is on the bench. Marveaux

  • 13 leeb1982 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:13 PM

Jonas was one of our better players today. I think that sums up the game really

  • 14 manxpie // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:14 PM

beattie are you seriously saying pardew doesn’t let his players know from the touchline!!?
he’s the most vocal manager we’ve had in years!
many many times since he’s been here you can hear his voice bellow across the pitch, encouraging and raging!!

  • 15 Transfer Sage // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:15 PM

    Leeb

Yeh I was just making a joke…although its not too funny seeing our corner record.

I’m undecided on marv…he is very good but it’s 50/50 what you get from him. It’s either brilliance or he goes missing.

  • 16 DarkSideofTheToon // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:15 PM

    Leeb

We were always going to struggle for possession tonight against a team with seriously accomplished passing players, despite struggling to create Cisse could still have had a hat trick.

I agree that he is somewhat conservative, more so than we would probably like to see, but to brand him clueless is unfair I feel.

    Transfer Sage

There are many facets that make up a leader, shouting on the touchline could be seen as one of those facets but if you don’t have that it doesn’t mean you do not have the other attributes that might make you a good leader. I for one won’t write him off purely because he doesn’t shout as much as Tony Pulis…who I think is an awful one dimensional manager so comparisons are spurious at best.

  • 17 DarkSideofTheToon // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:16 PM

    Leeb

It could sum up that Jonas actually played well.

  • 18 Transfer Sage // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:18 PM

    Dark side

I agree there…sometimes managers are praised for keeping their head and not shouting, some say it makes players calmer.

I don’t care if he shouts or not…if he gets the best from the team that’s all I care about. He currently isn’t so all perceived negatives are amplified by those annoyed.

  • 19 Grumpy // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:20 PM

    Speechless

  • 20 yo-yo // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:21 PM

The simple truth is you gift a side as good as Benfica two goals at home – and both were unforced defensive errors then you will get beat. Our defence gives too much away – Santon is a good player but prone to schoolboy errors. This is what separates winners from losers.
Neither mistake was down to the manager.
Neither bounce back from the woodwork was down to the manager.
Those on here using this loss to blame Pardew are just banging their own drum, indulging their own prejudices. Bottom line is we are not good enough to beat a CL team.
BUT we’re still in it and a little good fortune can carry us through.
Nowt wrong tonight with tactics – just the execution.
God following the Toon is hard work though

  • 21 leeb1982 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:22 PM

Transfer I think you should always have a player in ur team who u are willing to carry defensively(Ginola). Not in the same league but giving the confidence n freedom I can see enough in him to change games. Would love Ben arfa to have his vision for a pass. Pardew is sooooo far out of date and touch it’s unreal. I said the other day our best wide players are full backs so give them the freedom to push up with 2 holding cm covering

  • 22 leeb1982 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:23 PM

He did darkside but on 1 finger how many times can you count that he played well this season

  • 23 DarkSideofTheToon // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:25 PM

    Leeb

It’s all subjective. I’d reckon there are many games that you would say Santon played well whereas I would assert he’d had a shocker.

  • 24 slbfan // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:26 PM

    Ben

You are right. You had realy bad luck in key moments and some individual mistakes that costed you 2 goals. You probably dont know this, but NUC has a lot of fans in Portugal, way more than chelsea or city.
If it wasnt the fact that a defeat could bring some negativity to the team, I, and probably 99% of benfica supporters just wish you droped us from this ridic compettition so we can focus in win the Pl. This is like the 2º divison of europe with too many games and lack of financial incentive.
We did very bad tonight. Our supporters in the stadium were upset with the team, I was angry at home while watching the game… Cardozo walking in the field, ola john total out of the game, the 2 kids from B team playing very bad..arghhh, lame.

  • 25 northernirishtoon // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:27 PM

I love santon because of the tracking threat he gives us but I’m getting more and more frustrated with him

His constant errors at the back, lack of positioning, hes terrible in the air, gifting the opposition goals

Have been saying this for a long time and I think more and more people are realising it.

I’m not saying we should be on his back, not one bit, but some people on here need to open their eyes and watch the game

  • 26 leeb1982 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Yo yo. Pardew has said on numerous occasions we have a fantastic squad capable of competing at the upper end of the table. Yet where are we. The blame for me is dumped at pardews feet and rightly so

  • 27 northernirishtoon // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:28 PM

    Tracking > attacking

  • 28 manxpie // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:29 PM

transfer i thought santon played much better as a defender 2nite he made alot of good cut outs especially in the 1st half !
but he obviously made a horror pass back which we obviously didn’t need! to be honest tho he didn’t in my oppinion look match fit but we didn’t have much choice!
i seriously think we’ve got a great chance in the next leg because we could have scored 4 there and i hope cisse looks as lively at fulham and i also hope marv gets a game even if its just the 1st half because he does seem to fade but has unbelievable moments of skill that creates something!
at the end of the day we’ve been done by 2 stupid errors (and i blame sissko for duckin out!) n santoon and the wrong spin on the ball on both occasions which is unbelievably unlucky!
cisse tonight for me was the player who looked ultra hungry and i hope he brings that home on sunday n puts fulham to the sword!

  • 29 toonarmydownsouth // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:29 PM

    Just out of interest
Why is everyone jumping all over santon for what tbf was a poor backpass but nobody says a fcuking thing about stevie taylor being a complete tw@ and deliberately handleing the ball to give away a pen?
Your all more than happy to blame pardew and santon, but what nobody thinks that tayls hasn’t given us a mountain to climb?

  • 30 yo-yo // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:31 PM

    leeb

    Bollox.

Did he put too much side spin when he lobbed the goalie?
Did he make a schoolboy back pass ?
Where did he go wrong tonight ?

  • 31 Jamiemac // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:31 PM

    How good we’re we tonight!

So good tonight, just simple silly mistakes cost us which is a shame.

Cisse – best game of his season.

Simmo also had a great game.

2-0 next week is definitely possible!

  • 32 alex84 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:31 PM

Thought the lads did well, Cisse looked a real threat, just really unlucky not to have a hatrick, we can beat this team at home.

    Spot on mate

  • 34 leeb1982 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:32 PM

tds yes taylors was a silly mistake but it was split second from when sissoko failed to connect. santon is looking back at he benfica player and still plays the pass. what were u told as a kid….. if in doubt put it out

  • 35 yo-yo // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:33 PM

    TADS

Two stupid defensive errors separates a winning team from a losing team – just look at our goals against all season to see hot good our defence is.

Now that I would blame Pardew for – especially if he leads on defensive coaching.

  • 36 leeb1982 // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:35 PM

100% about saylor. How many fcuking times is he gonna do things like that before he realises its completely mental

Got a feeling though if u took that keenness out of his game he wouldn’t be half the player.

Honestly think this could be his last season playing regularly

  • 38 NUFC_LEAZES END // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:36 PM

I think people are being way too critical of our players, yes we weren’t compact and solid we were defending, but we had hit the post twice. If that happened to anyone else it would have went in, but we were unlucky.
Santon didnt cover himself in glory with his back pass but his overall game was good.

  • 39 toonarmydownsouth // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:37 PM

If you can think enough to put your hand out you can get a chest on it
Bigger mistake than santons for me especially as he’s the one with the experience, awful decision grow tayls and bitterly disappointed in him

  • 40 kevymartins // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:38 PM

The saying is you don’t take your chances you will be punished that was proved tonight… Also thought marveaux showed his true colours tonight was very greedy I was furious a few times when he could have put a few people through but chose to just lose it…It’s a team game team effort

  • 41 northernirishtoon // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Thought the tactics were good all the same

    Pardew said -

“They are a quality side and we have to give them respect, but we showed tonight that, if we are ambitious, we can hurt a team.

Shame he isn’t ambitious more often!

    That’s the most frustrating thing

  • 42 toonarmydownsouth // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:42 PM

    Kevy
Fair enough can’t disagree with that, unlucky to hit the post twice but would it be different if we had a more clinical CF? Not sure but aye Marv made some poor decisions but also tbf put some cracking passes through tonight

  • 43 manxpie // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:45 PM

tads for me it was sisskos fault why did he duck like a girl it was his ball all day!!
staylors reaction was totally natural and unfortunatly the official on the goal line actually seen it (is that the 1st time them officials have actually done something!)
we were unlucky 2 nite we are owed some karma in the second leg and i think we’ll do it can’t wait now!

  • 44 Sav // Apr 4, 2013 at 11:48 PM

The team looks like they get along well and have decent spirit but I have to say, we seem to lack a real leader out there. I’d wish taylor, the local lad could be it, he is wholehearted, but just not a good enough footballer to be respected as team captain. Cabaye is good enough, but he can leave his foot in too often and he tends to roll around a bit when he is tackled and he sometimes goes missing. M’biwa is supposed to be captain material and maybe its still a language problem for him but for me, he doesn’t look in command. Tiote is too reckless and Colo, though a great footballer, does not communicate enough and he’s probably away anyway.
Tonight, I thought shoulders dropped and recriminating looks were exchanged which didn’t help when we went 2 down. Amongst the ‘purples’ we hope to sign in the summer, I hope one of them is a real leader because I feel its something we lack as much as a striker or another centreback. Especially with so many young players in the side, we need a talisman.

  • 45 nicholasnufc // Apr 5, 2013 at 3:41 AM

The positive is that we got an away goal. Let’s see how we can use that in the second leg.

  • 46 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Apr 5, 2013 at 6:16 AM

    @6:

I think everyone on here was watching a different game to you?

Benfica are 2 points clear at the top of the League above Porto in the competition there ! The last game they lost at home was months ago against Barca and they won last week 6-1 against a tricky oppoment !

We were Shite last week against Shitty and Shite against Wigan with a dodgy Ref !

We were NOT shite last night ! Plonker !

  • 47 tweaked // Apr 5, 2013 at 7:32 AM

We were unlucky not to be 3-0 up in the first half, the second half we gave them to much room and stayed n the back foot, sloppy goals given… We an stil in this at home we only need 2
