some absolute mugs on here…3-1 is a scoreline i would’ve taken, for sure. Benfica, like i said, aren’t the unstoppable team people have made them out to be. We can beat them by 2 goals at SJP, i’m certain of it. Glad Cabaye got through without a booking, and Cisse looked terrific!

Stop mindlessly moaning man, it’s a quarter final of Europe away in Portugal, what the f do you’s expect? Us to win 3 or 4-0?

There’s so many positives there on display…we could’ve actually won the match if things had of went our way.

I know where the neggers will be when we play the 2nd leg…sat behind their TVs moaning…and i know where the real fans, who talk sense, will be…in St James Park roaring the lads on to the semi’s.

  • 2 Big Pappa Cissé // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:05 PM

I have no doubt we can win 2-0 at St. James’ but I don’t think we can stop them from scoring at least 1

  • 3 Alan Pas-de-clue // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:06 PM

need to keep it tighter at st james to have a chance, we can still do it but need to be tighter

  • 4 Tinman // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:06 PM

    F****g Gutted.

    So Unlucky.

    So Stupid.

Still Think We Can Beat Them By 2 at home, NEED a Clean Sheet Though.

  • 5 martoon // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:07 PM

toonLYF – you talk a lot of sense – I’m disappointed with the result but pleased with the way we played – 2 self inflicted goals and no luck with Cisse’s two shots against the post.

  • 6 nufc786 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:07 PM

All today at home lads i would take 3-1….
but watching the game we could have had more goals thats why im feeling gutted….
but we have to dust ourselves down and get fired up for fulham

  • 7 Tinman // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Big Pappa Cisse, you do realise how contradictory that post is?

  • 8 Baro // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:08 PM

    toonLYF

u certainly think u know everything right? don’t ya?

    well u don’t

yes, ur being a positive guy..

but is it not about time to say something about santon.?

after the wigan game they interviewed him …

and oh my he was excited…..

excited about the fact that he finally got a goal,
but he should really worry about the loss we had..

  • 9 Crawfordladd17 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Apart from Krul and Cisse, Sissoko and M’Bwia at times everyone ulse was poo Cabaye Perch were awful, Marveaux was good for about 40s, the rest of the defence other than M’Bwia can piss off

  • 10 colwell // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Calling people Mugs then saying you’d have taken a 3-1 defeat very optimistic of you. I’d say people that accept defeat are MUGS

  • 11 Baro // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:08 PM

    colwell

well said, im on the same path

  • 12 Tinman // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Just gutted tonight. We could have been 3-1 up on another night. So unlucky. So stupid and wasteful! Showed signs we can still get through!

  • 13 Beattie25 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Pass, move and press and we look good.

But mostly when the opponents have the ball we sit back and then we lose our heads and start pinging it forward and inviting pressure.

Pardew is in charge of squad tactics, mentality and positioning.

Tonight showed why he will never be a top manager. EVER.

Yes we were unlucky but good teams keep pressing even when the post has been hit. For us it feels as if the entire team collectively sighs and thinks ‘it’s going to be one of those days’.

The manager should be able to keep confidence going on the touchline instead of scribbling in his notepad.

  • 14 yorkshire_magpie // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:09 PM

at big pappa. So dosent that make it 2-1?!!

  • 15 Big Pappa Cissé // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:09 PM

    @ tinman

I am never sure in football m8. I can’t predict the future and can’t be certain that is all

  • 16 DarkSideofTheToon // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:10 PM

    JackButler

Has Santon just made one mistake? Personally I am of the opinion that he has been defensively poor all season which has merely carried on this evening. I wouldn’t go as far as saying he needs to be sold but he needs to drastically sharpen up.

3-1 isn’t an awful result given how well Benfica play the ball around, we’ve got an away goal, but in the context of how the game went we really could have got a second away goal (although Benfica could have scored more)

A really good side so let’s not be too downbeat.

Beattie how you can blame the fact that a team with incredibly classy players outperformed us in their home stadium where they have been unbeatable on Pardew is totally beyond me. Each to their own I suppose.

  • 17 Baro // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:11 PM

    well im out of here…

hopefully we pick up a very much needed 3 points vs Fulham on Sunday…

its going to be a crucial game

  • 18 Tinman // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Okay then Big Pappa Cisse, I think we might win at SJP, could draw, or may even lose

  • 19 Rotonda heights // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:11 PM

I can’t blame Pardew for Santon and especially Taylor’s lunacy, but as people have said we put so much emphasis on defence (which still leak a lot of goals) that we create so few chances in a game, although Cisse could have had a hat trick.

After that first excellent 20 mins we just seem to run out of legs and ideas and pass and move goes out the window.

  • 20 IrishToon009 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:11 PM

I’vw my flights and ticket got for next Thurs, first time seeing they guys in Europe!
Go right at them, we are well capable of scoring against them!!

  • 21 nufc786 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:12 PM

We lost the fight but not the war keep the faith and hopefully we will be in the semi’s by this time next week

  • 22 jammylambo // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:12 PM

if it wasnt for the two complete gifts the team played admirably against formidable opposition.

tale of what ifs , what if the posts were thinner , what is the ball had got staylor in the nutsack and what if santon didnt have a moment of retardation.

  • 23 Transfer Sage // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Happy enough with tonight. Had some good spells in the game and we missed a few good chances, as did they.

I think they stopped us well, they did very well so credit to them.

Santon and saylor made 2 key mistakes which are punished at this level. Other than that, and a few saves by krill they didn’t rip us to shreds so we could go through still.

  • 24 Eddie // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Promising start – just wish we could have pushed a bit harder after scoring. Another gruelling match as well – Simmo and Perch may be knacked for Fulham, possibly Marv. Given our problems with injuries, small pool of quality, mediocre manager etc, could’ve been worse.

  • 25 Rotonda heights // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:12 PM

    tinman

my money’s on a win, draw or loss

  • 26 saxonfenken // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:13 PM

They are a very good side at home, and we were a tad unlucky, but some of the so called supporters on here make me sick, We are not the finished artical yet, and we still have a very good chance at home. I suppose the two Cisse efforts that hit the post, the Taylor hand ball and Davide Santon’s backpas will be blamed on Alan Pardew,
I shall now go and leave all the neggars to have a field day with there senseless bile

  • 27 Mark the Mag // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Marveaux should have been in the hole, he was outstanding v arsenal and man u when they played high lines and had space could have feed Cisse, Sissoko should play next to Cabaye, we didn’t do enough on a wet pitch should have tested the keeper more. Saying that Cisse could have had a hat trick but I still think there is no synergy to the team, we have quality players who deseve a better game plan.

  • 28 Tinman // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Just feel more unlucky than anything, so disappointed

  • 29 Beattie25 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:14 PM

    Darkside

    Not just today, but always.

You must see that a different game to me. We had them when we pressed but too many pass back, long balls and drooping shoulders.

My question isn’t about the quality of the opposition, it’s the managers input during the game.

We need a leader. Look how animated their manager was. They were on the ropes, he started getting angry and they responded.

    You cannot argue that fact?

  • 30 sekretess // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:14 PM

To be honest – I think it’s time to realise we are better without Vurnon Anita and Shola “please-retire-obi”.

  • 31 saxonfenken // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:15 PM

    Eddie
yer it is all Pardew’s fault of course, you just can not resist. What would have been said with just a little bit of luck and those two had gone in,

  • 32 ochytoon // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:15 PM

Should never say you would take a loss. And to be honest, seeing the way Benfica played, we should never have accepted one. Nothing they did particularly impressed me, we can play like that, confidence is just a bit low at the moment. We need to invest this summer. And there’s something about the middle of the pitch we just don’t have right yet. Maybe if we play 3 in the middle, Perch and Cabaye as holding midfielders, with Sissoko in an advanced role. Gouffran on the left, Marveaux on the right? Not really sure but there is something we’re definitely lacking in the centre of the ark.

  • 33 beefman13 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:17 PM

We have to go for it, we have the players to do it as the first 20 mins showed, learn from what we can do, not from this defensive mindedness that is not working, we are decent when we go for it, we have to, good teams keep pushing. Lets give the home grown lad a chance in front of the gallowgate, have you the bottle ALan?????mmmmmmm

  • 34 ochytoon // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:17 PM

    Beattie
I agree with you to an extent,. The players heads drop too often and more often than not, I see Pardew writing on his note pad and not shouting too the players

  • 35 JackButler // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:17 PM

    DarkSideofTheToon

    Has Santon got to improve???………YES

But so does everybody else in our squad, as we are simply not good enough as a team.

But as always on here after a defeat someone has to be hung out to dry and carry the blame.
My original post was against those idiot’s who were saying that Santon should be sold because on the basis that they came up with we would only have two or three players available next season

  • 36 Eddie // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:18 PM

saxo – didn’t say ALL his fault, only partly.

  • 37 Bambams // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Its only half time boys. …

We can beat these at our place I am certain of that.

I am the pessimist of the blog and I believe…. They wont like the thought of 2-0 will put them out!

They needed a penalty and an intercepted back pass to beat us.

    Come on believe….

  • 38 saxonfenken // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:18 PM

    Eddie
    of course it was

  • 39 lesh // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:19 PM

Off thread but BBC radio 5′s making such a big thing of Bale being taken off injured….. so what, it’s not as though the world’s about to end!

Couldn’t be southern media bias, could it?

  • 40 NUFC_LEAZES END // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:21 PM

So hard to pick a best player.

    Krul had a great game
    Marveaux had a good game
    Jonas had a good game
    Cisse had a great game
    Sissoko had an alright game

Cisse just pips it for me like

  • 41 martoon // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:25 PM

Any chance to bash Pardew – I thought he got the tactics spot on – he can’t legislate for individual mistakes and unlucky bounces of the post. Sorry of course he can Pardew should have demanded square posts!!!

  • 42 Norris 4 Newcastle // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:25 PM

LISTEN LADS AND EVERYONE ELSE. Im new to this page right now, im proud of us tonight. Away goal, scored early and a solid performance overall. Sloppy at the back at times, but the scoreline was hash on us and the Home crowd should give us a big influence in the need for a goal or two.

  • 43 beefman13 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Leazes to be fair son its a 90 min game and jonas did mor get a kick second half, that high line was made for the youngin of the last defender, Pardew did not give the quickest player at the club ie campbell the chance to make a name for himself, shola gets the nod with gosling again, i just dispair sometimes.

  • 44 Mark the Mag // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:30 PM

Santon has significantly weaken our outstanding defence from last season. It mystified me at start of season when fans were saying he was player of the season. He is a good player but when faced up by a winger has no chance on his weaker foot.
    Beattie
Good analysis about their coach lifting their team, don’t usually agree with your anti Pardrew posts, but you have good football insight, its just I would love us to have some stability because I think Pardrew is a good bloke.

  • 45 beefman13 // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:30 PM

Martoon they could have scored half a dozen, we gave it a go properly for 20 mins, he thought the goal would be enough, but its now a massive ask. For me wrong subs again, we needed pace, campbell will frighten the life out of a high line. Shola wont.

  • 46 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Says everything when i see the First Post on here !

A 3-1 loss away at Benfica is nothing to be ashamed of?
No-one should be happy with that, but we had a good go at them and just before the 1-1 almost had the 2-0, and but for the post could of had a second goal later aswel !

    @25 :
Totally agree with your sentiments about the support on here but i am used to it and have actually come to expect it, so no surprises there eh?

The away goal is worth its weight in gold and we still have a chance with the aggregate score?
One foot in the Semi,s? More disappointed with some of the reactions on here if the truth be known !

  • 47 wynsleap // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:33 PM

    Difficult result to stomach tonight.
Two needlessly stupid pieces of defending from Santon and Saylor plus two atrocious bits of luck for Papiss (who was excellent all night) and we have it all to do next week.
Hope I’m wrong but don’t think we’ll get through the home tie without them scoring so we’d need to get a few to win. Think that may be a tall order.
Two things really hit home tonight – Marveaux (although occasionally good as he is) will never be a major threat until he gets some balls. He hangs his leg in at tackles or pulls out all together – not really good enough at this level. He needs a couple of hours per day one on one against Cheick in training!!
Secondly Shola should be put out to grass – PERMANENTLY. His final ‘exertions’ tonight at the end of the game were embarrassing. He should stick to babysitting from now on.
Thought Sissoko and Jonas gave everything tonight, Tim had his usual fantastic endeavours and Simpson gave his all.
First 20 minutes we were fabulous and need to maintain that for 90 at St. James against Fulham and then Benfica.

  • 48 DxSkyline // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Krul saved us form getting murdered tonight but hate to be a troll but how could anyone vote for cisse i dont know, he scores 1 goal misses 3 clear cut chances!!! god how i wish we could swap ba for cisse

  • 49 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Apr 4, 2013 at 10:47 PM

I beg to differ on some of the comments about Santon on here!

If he is such a liability as some of you seem to think then why are some of the big clubs in Italy and Russia expressing an interest in signing him?

Okay he made a mistake but at the same time he does,nt deserve to be crucified for it on here? And, he may get cursed every game but i refuse to be negative about him and he will not be crucified by me!

We miss Collo, big time, and if he leaves, he will be difficult to replace? Hope to God they got someone lined up as a replacement in the summer transfer window?
Anyone know how close Debuchy is to a return because he is a big miss too?
