some absolute mugs on here…3-1 is a scoreline i would’ve taken, for sure. Benfica, like i said, aren’t the unstoppable team people have made them out to be. We can beat them by 2 goals at SJP, i’m certain of it. Glad Cabaye got through without a booking, and Cisse looked terrific!

Stop mindlessly moaning man, it’s a quarter final of Europe away in Portugal, what the f do you’s expect? Us to win 3 or 4-0?

There’s so many positives there on display…we could’ve actually won the match if things had of went our way.

I know where the neggers will be when we play the 2nd leg…sat behind their TVs moaning…and i know where the real fans, who talk sense, will be…in St James Park roaring the lads on to the semi’s.

I have no doubt we can win 2-0 at St. James’ but I don’t think we can stop them from scoring at least 1

toonLYF – you talk a lot of sense – I’m disappointed with the result but pleased with the way we played – 2 self inflicted goals and no luck with Cisse’s two shots against the post.

and oh my he was excited…..

excited about the fact that he finally got a goal,
but he should really worry about the loss we had..

Apart from Krul and Cisse, Sissoko and M’Bwia at times everyone ulse was poo Cabaye Perch were awful, Marveaux was good for about 40s, the rest of the defence other than M’Bwia can piss off

Pass, move and press and we look good.

But mostly when the opponents have the ball we sit back and then we lose our heads and start pinging it forward and inviting pressure.

Pardew is in charge of squad tactics, mentality and positioning.

Tonight showed why he will never be a top manager. EVER.

Yes we were unlucky but good teams keep pressing even when the post has been hit. For us it feels as if the entire team collectively sighs and thinks ‘it’s going to be one of those days’.

The manager should be able to keep confidence going on the touchline instead of scribbling in his notepad.

Has Santon just made one mistake? Personally I am of the opinion that he has been defensively poor all season which has merely carried on this evening. I wouldn’t go as far as saying he needs to be sold but he needs to drastically sharpen up.

3-1 isn’t an awful result given how well Benfica play the ball around, we’ve got an away goal, but in the context of how the game went we really could have got a second away goal (although Benfica could have scored more)

A really good side so let’s not be too downbeat.

Beattie how you can blame the fact that a team with incredibly classy players outperformed us in their home stadium where they have been unbeatable on Pardew is totally beyond me. Each to their own I suppose.

I can’t blame Pardew for Santon and especially Taylor’s lunacy, but as people have said we put so much emphasis on defence (which still leak a lot of goals) that we create so few chances in a game, although Cisse could have had a hat trick.

After that first excellent 20 mins we just seem to run out of legs and ideas and pass and move goes out the window.

if it wasnt for the two complete gifts the team played admirably against formidable opposition.

tale of what ifs , what if the posts were thinner , what is the ball had got staylor in the nutsack and what if santon didnt have a moment of retardation.

Happy enough with tonight. Had some good spells in the game and we missed a few good chances, as did they.

I think they stopped us well, they did very well so credit to them.

Santon and saylor made 2 key mistakes which are punished at this level. Other than that, and a few saves by krill they didn’t rip us to shreds so we could go through still.

Promising start – just wish we could have pushed a bit harder after scoring. Another gruelling match as well – Simmo and Perch may be knacked for Fulham, possibly Marv. Given our problems with injuries, small pool of quality, mediocre manager etc, could’ve been worse.

They are a very good side at home, and we were a tad unlucky, but some of the so called supporters on here make me sick, We are not the finished artical yet, and we still have a very good chance at home. I suppose the two Cisse efforts that hit the post, the Taylor hand ball and Davide Santon’s backpas will be blamed on Alan Pardew,
I shall now go and leave all the neggars to have a field day with there senseless bile

Marveaux should have been in the hole, he was outstanding v arsenal and man u when they played high lines and had space could have feed Cisse, Sissoko should play next to Cabaye, we didn’t do enough on a wet pitch should have tested the keeper more. Saying that Cisse could have had a hat trick but I still think there is no synergy to the team, we have quality players who deseve a better game plan.

    Darkside

    Not just today, but always.

You must see that a different game to me. We had them when we pressed but too many pass back, long balls and drooping shoulders.

My question isn’t about the quality of the opposition, it’s the managers input during the game.

We need a leader. Look how animated their manager was. They were on the ropes, he started getting angry and they responded.

    You cannot argue that fact?

Should never say you would take a loss. And to be honest, seeing the way Benfica played, we should never have accepted one. Nothing they did particularly impressed me, we can play like that, confidence is just a bit low at the moment. We need to invest this summer. And there’s something about the middle of the pitch we just don’t have right yet. Maybe if we play 3 in the middle, Perch and Cabaye as holding midfielders, with Sissoko in an advanced role. Gouffran on the left, Marveaux on the right? Not really sure but there is something we’re definitely lacking in the centre of the ark.

We have to go for it, we have the players to do it as the first 20 mins showed, learn from what we can do, not from this defensive mindedness that is not working, we are decent when we go for it, we have to, good teams keep pushing. Lets give the home grown lad a chance in front of the gallowgate, have you the bottle ALan?????mmmmmmm

    Has Santon got to improve???………YES

But so does everybody else in our squad, as we are simply not good enough as a team.

But as always on here after a defeat someone has to be hung out to dry and carry the blame.
My original post was against those idiot’s who were saying that Santon should be sold because on the basis that they came up with we would only have two or three players available next season

We can beat these at our place I am certain of that.

I am the pessimist of the blog and I believe…. They wont like the thought of 2-0 will put them out!

They needed a penalty and an intercepted back pass to beat us.

    Come on believe….

    Krul had a great game
    Marveaux had a good game
    Jonas had a good game
    Cisse had a great game
    Sissoko had an alright game

Cisse just pips it for me like
