Newcastle vs Fulham – Match Preview

The game this afternoon is the most important game since we played Reading at home earlier this year, and we have to hope the result is better than what happened against Reading back on January 18th.

With Southampton winning at Reading yesterday, they are now on 37 points and in 11th place, two points behind Fulham, who look fairly safe on 39 points.

Newcastle are on 33 points in 15th position – 6th bottom – and Aston Villa have the same points total now after their good win at Stoke City yesterday – and Stoke remain on 34 points just above Newcastle, and they have been a in a big slump this year.

So there are nine teams at least involved in possible relegation – with Reading and QPR likely to be two who will be relegated since they are both on 23 points, which is 8 points from safety – with Sunderland 4th bottom on 31 points.

A win today will see us climb the league table and a draw will see us in the same position in the league or even lowe depending on the other scores today.

So after losing our last three games and the last two on the road in the league to Wigan and Manchester City we have to start putting some points on the board and getting some wins – if we are survive this season in the Premier League.

Unfortunately we still have a long injury list, and we’ll be without Fabricio Coloccini, Mathieu Debuchy, Massadio Haidara, Ben Arfa and Cheick Tiote – and all but Massadio would be starting the game of they were fit.

James Perch and Danny Simpson both came off injured on Thursday night in Lisbon, but we are assuming they will be fit – since Alan Pardew said nothing different in his press conference yesterday when talking about injuries.

Yoan Gouffran will start today, and that may be the only change that manager Alan Pardew makes from the side that lost 3-1 against Benfica last Thursday night,

Here’s the possible team that starts today:

Simpson Taylor(S) Yanga-Mbiwa Santon
Gouffran Perch Cabaye (c) Gutierrez
Subs: Elliot Williamson Bigirimana Anita Marveaux Obertan Ameobi(Sh)

That means Gouffran comes in for Marveaux, and it’s hard on Sylvain, who played very well in Lisbon, but we think the manager will go for experience and Jonas Gutierrez, who played very well on Thursday night.

Papiss Cisse seems to be in some good goalscoring form,  so maybe he can get some goals from half chances today ….

And our defense needs to play very well today – but in the summer we just have to bring some new defenders in,  as we still have one of the worst defenses in the league  this season

Newcastle have conceded a massive 56 goals in 31 league games, and that’s the third worst defensive record in the league behind only Aston Villa and Reading – and it’s hard to argue with facts.

In our poll around 62% think we’ll win this game.

It will not be easy today against a Fulham side in form, and we have to hope the lads are ready for this game and come out fighting, and can stay in the game in the second half – a win would be fantastic.

I really really hope that there is a way to accommodate Marveux in the starting line-up. Jonas has worked hard all season etc, but we could really do with more creativity and incision if we are open teams up.

Agree. According to the BBC website QPR have a tighter defence than us.

    Simpson STaylor Mbiwa Perch
    Guti Sissoko Cabaye Gouffran

That’s the team I’d play. We need to get Sissoko on the ball more and although he has scored and made assists in the more forward role I still he’d be more effective alongside Cabaye. Marv in the hole is his best position to make and score and he can give us that creative spark on the edge of the box that we miss without HBA.

When I’ve seen us play this season, on the few occasions we’ve got the ball on the deck, passed and moved, we’ve looked as good as anyone else – wish we could see more of this.

I agree that we need to get Sissoko more involved in advanced positions. I think that if we had more width (i.e. more options in wide areas) it would allow us to make more space through the middle for the sort of runs that both he, Marveux and Gouffran can make.

Keep berbatov quiet. Keep Fulham quiet. I reckon a nervy 2-1 win santon with the make up brace. Howay the lads!

My wallet is hoping for a 3-1 to Newcastle today.

Got 80-1 on 2-1 Toon at HT, then FT of 3-1.

Fulham are average but will pose a threat and I think they’ll score – BUT – we pose the bigger threat I feel and I fancy Cisse to get a couple and Sissoko the other.

2-1 up at HT, nevery 2nd half performance with a 3rd goal to ease the nerves 10 mins from time…

    Lovely juberly.

@ 13 Agree. For someone who supposedly doesn’t travel well, 6 of Berbatov’s 13 this season have been scored away from home, and all have been crucial goals.

I hope he is a Toon fan because if he is in the mood he is just unplayable.

Looking for a solid game from Maps at the back….. He had impressed me since he signed and hopefully Goufran will get his head up and gets some early balls in to Cisse.

    Going for 2-1 toon

I would like to see two up front. Its a game we should have a go at them we can afford to do that at St.james. Whilst Cisse can play on his own, I think there would be a lot more chance created if he had say Gouffran near him. I would also like to see Marveaux in the team he always picks out Cisse in a decent position as we have already seen with crucial goals.

You’d really pay Jonas at LB?
Think you missed the game against city lately or something cause if you really didn’t see how poor he was at LB then you need glasses mate.

Would like to see us try
    Simmo…..Tayls…..Mbiwa …..santon…..
    ……Cabaye …….Perch…….Sissoko……
    Marveau ………..Gouffran ………..
    …………..Cisse ………….

Just hope we turn up today, we’re so hitty missy. Pards would have been sacked if he wasn’t all part of Ashleys way of running the club. And as far as all the injuries go ive Never known anything like it.

As we are at home and with Sidwell banned we should adopt a more attacking formation, but keeping the same formation (4-2-3-1) without being too adventerous. I would replace Perch with Marveaux on the assumption that Fulham are going to defend and we need skill to unlock their defence. My team would be:

    Simpson Taylor Mbiwa Santon
    Marveaux Cabaye
    Jonas Sissoko Gouffran

Cant believe the number of posters who are lining up with Cabaye playing in front of the back 4. He is the best passer of the ball with good vision and yet some are putting him in a deeper defensive position.
The back 4 picks itself again today but hopefully a few home truths have been dished out by AP towards a few re work rate & energy.
If those attending today including myself want a to see a win and not just hope for one then i really pray to the gods that the line up factoring injuries into account is

@Dennis_twice. 56 goals in 3 games?! I know we’re bad but not that bad 😉

Honestly can’t see us winning today. Lucky to get a point tbh. Praying we win. Good hammering of fulham would be nice. Let’s hope Wigan lose.
