Can Newcastle Reach The Europa League Semi-Finals?

3:21 pm, Tuesday, April 9th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 107 Comments

We’re running a poll to see how Newcastle fans thinks we’ll fare on Thursday night in the second leg of our quarter final tie with Benfica, after we lost the first leg 3-1 in Lisbon.

europa league emblem

Newcastle can go through if we win 2-0 or 4-1, and a 3-1 final result after 90 minutes will take us into extra time on Thursday – although that will be difficult for our lads – given we’ll still  have to hammer Sunderland on Sunday.

It’s a straight vote – yes or no.

Pardumb needs to learn the art of underpromising and overdelivering.

  • 2 Alan Pas-de-clue // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:26 PM

Repost as Ed wrote new article

has anyone seen the bbc article on how goal line technology will work?

the referee wears a watch and if the ball crosses the line it comes up instantly on his watch GOAL

    INSTANTLY

No wait, no slowing of the game. INSTANTLY

how long did it take Blatter to consent to this :/

I understand with fouls/offsides that this is a different matter entirely

with fouls we simply have to allow retrospective punishment if necessary, in the same way red cards can be rescinded they should be distributed postgame if required

bad offside calls are something i dont think we will ever get rid of, but hey they provide a talking point and the decisions ‘even themselves out over a season’

  • 3 GEORDIE BLOGGER // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:29 PM

Alittle of subject lads but although improving the squad is a must and theres some gems being suggested belhandar my fav atm by the way … I believe its just as important to seriously look at our sports science department and training regimes/facilities as the amount of injuries we have and still are suffering is beyond a joke! Every team has this problem to a level but it seems like its never ending with our lads wheres it going to stop!!!

  • 4 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Not meaning to be picky here, but the question asked is “Can we” and err, yes we can. So anyone who said no is just plain wrong :)

Now “will we” is another question altogether.

  • 5 Alan Pas-de-clue // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Yes we can most certainly reach the semis, whether we do or not is another story. but step back and think, 1 match from the semis, who would have thought it. we have had a a great run regardless, lets go and give it our all against benfica

    on thursday

    best scenario to worst scenario

    1) Win in 90mins
    2) Lose in 90 mins
    3) Win in 120 mins
    4) Lose in 120 mins

If we win in 90 mins i think our momentum will take us through for the derby, any other result and we are seriously stuffed in terms of fatigue

the reason i say i would rather lose in 90 than win in 120 is that if we lose against sunderland, which we may well do if we are forced to play 120 mins 3 days in advance, we are right back in the relegation mix

  • 6 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Alan…Seems simple enough. One hurdle at a time and all that. Gets rid of one issue and it’s a crucial one tbh. We can argue about in play stuff all we like, but something as simple as did the ball cross the line can and needs to be addressed imo.

Geordie…I really know little about our set up, but we do seem to pick up an awful lot of injuries, well, more so than a lot of clubs, so it should at least be looked at.

  • 7 toonbrother // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:32 PM

I hope he does not play anita in defensive mid. Play Tiote, Bigirimana, Momo or Perch there please! Also Marveaux & Cabaye are too fragile and important to play 3 games in 7 days. Please give him a break midweek and let obertan have a go. We need to stop taking unnecessary risks

    Thursday:…………Elliot
    Anita….Saylor..Mbiwa…Haidara
    Obertan…Bigirimana..Sissoko..Jonas
    …………Cisse…Shola.

    Sunday:……………Krul
    Simpson..Saylor…Mbiwa…Jonas/Haidara
    ……………….Tiote..Sissoko…
    .Marveaux……………Cabaye…….Gouffran
    …………………………..Cisse

  • 8 Big Pappa Cissé // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:38 PM

    @ Alan

So you would rather lose in 90 than win in 120 ? . We could get to the semi finals of Europe, no matter how tired it makes our players

  • 9 Mark the Mag // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Imagine if we never gave them two goals away ? How excited and optimistic we would be ! Think if would be worth bringing HBA back is we get threw, he could win it for us. Let him rest til next season if we go out though eh ?

  • 10 AmericanGeordie // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Pardew has already made it clear that we need to “be patient”, keep a clean sheet and nick a goal or two late. Those comments, plus the fact that we have 3 huge games in 8 days concluding with the Derby with Premier League status not yet secured, lead me to believe these should be our lineups:

    Benifca. 4-5-1
    Krul
    Simpson-Taylor-MBiwa-Haidara
    Obertan-Tiote-Marveaux-Anita-Jonas
    Shola
    Bench:Eliot,Perch,Colo,Cabaye,Sissoko, Ben Arfa, Cisse

If we are within a shout in the last 20 mins you can switch to a 4-3-3 and throw on Cisse, Cabaye, Sissoko and/or HBA. If we are out of it you can bring on Perch & Colo to rest Taylor and Tiote.

    Makems: 4-2-3-1
    Krul
    Debuchy-Taylor-Colo-Haidara
    Tiote-Cabaye
    HBA-Sissoko-Gouffran
    Cisse
    Bench: Eliot, MBiwa,Anita,Jonas,Obertan, Marveaux, Shola

That would give us 7 changes with enough fresh legs, hopefully, to slay the Makems.

    HWTL!!!

  • 11 Alan Pas-de-clue // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Big Pappa, I know nothing is certain and anything can happen, but i would avoid relegation at any cost. due to our long term plan our time in europe will come, weve waited so many years we can wait a bit longer.

if we get relegated which is a massive possibility again should we lose the derby, i dont think we will bounce back like we did before. and all of our slow building process will be gone out of the window.

this season especially, survival is paramount

  • 12 Mark the Mag // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:44 PM

    Toonbrother
Good point is this why we have the injuries, unnecessary risks with all the extra games ? Also I would play Bigi he looks mature beyond his years, if your good enough your old enough, will be better than Anita chasing shadows in midfields although I am a fan of his.

  • 13 Rotonda heights // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:55 PM

I don’t really understand Pardew’s thinking here. Surely we have to go for it from the first whistle. We could find ourselves running out of time and giving ourselves too much to do.

The first 20 mins in Lisbon they were clearly rattled and we just have to re-produce that for longer and no more Santon and Saylor ridiculous errors please.

  • 14 ajcrawfs // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:58 PM

Course we can reach the semi finals! Keep the faith, i think teams underestimate us, there attack is worrying though but i believe Yanga-Mbwia is proving to be an excellent CB.

My prediction came true last match and I now predict we will win 2-0 with Cisse grabbing a brace!

  • 15 chris_g // Apr 9, 2013 at 3:59 PM

“let obertan have a go. We need to stop taking unnecessary risks”

Is that what they call an Obermoron?

(meaning:. a combination of the words “Obertan” and “Oxymoron”)

  • 16 Alan Pas-de-clue // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:03 PM

Rotonda, pardew is hardly gonna say oh yeah we are gonna come out all guns blazing at the start and let them know his game plan.

  • 17 JackButler // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Three point’s against sunderland if far more important, not because of it being a derby, but because we are still not safe in the league

  • 18 Novocastrian66 // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:05 PM

I think we will go two up. Pardew will shut up shop and we will concede late on. Yet another heroic failure.

  • 19 Alan Pas-de-clue // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:05 PM

novocastrian sounds about right. its one reason i am glad we did not win the first leg LOL

  • 20 Spellcheck // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:09 PM

  • 22 DokToon // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:21 PM

    can we win, hell yes…
will we win.. i sure as F**K hope so,

i agree, beating the mackems is the more important of the two though, staying above relgation is necessary to keep building the club…

but hey, win em both toon, WIN THEM BOTH… and my liver will need a mandatory 3 day break, lol…

  • 23 toonarmydownsouth // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:22 PM

Of course we can beat them!!
They looked okay at there place but the score line was flattering and we gifted them 2 goals, infact an hour in and that score line could of been 3-1 to us if cisse shots had been 2 inches further left, talk about unlucky!!
No reason we can’t beat them at SJP

  • 24 Rotonda heights // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:23 PM

To guarantee any continued attacking play from Pardew
the later we score the better!!! Happy to shut up shop in the 93rd minute !!!

  • 25 Bucks mag // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:24 PM

I have complained for years about Newcastle not trying for cup competitions, at last that has changed! So much more exciting.
Don’t think we’ll go through on Thursday but I think we’ll win 2-1.

  • 26 DokToon // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:24 PM

agreed leases, hope he get them both spot on…

  • 27 JackButler // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:25 PM

The score line really flattered Benfica as we should have been out of sight, but luck has been something that’s deserted us all season long.
We can’t allow them to settle and need to be direct from the first whistle

  • 28 wls // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:37 PM

I think Anita plays better at right back then in the midfield.
    Good positioning and crosses.
Plus, doesn’t have to deal with the physical combat in midfield.

Hey guys, I’m travelling up to SJP for the first time by car (been countless times on the train) on Thursday (can’t wait) and was wondering if anybody knows any decent places to park near(ish) to the ground and also how bad the traffic gets in Newcastle at rush hour?

Any help would be much appreciated

  • 33 wreker16 // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:56 PM

It should be interesting so see what Pardew prioritises, trying to secure our prem status (convieniently in the derby) or going for it against benfica, who’d be a manager

  • 34 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 4:58 PM

Wreker…If Pardews comments are to be believed…and that is a big if….then it seems the scum are the priority this week.

  • 35 Tsunki // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:07 PM

I understand toonbrothers idea but with that europa team we will be beaten. I think playing a high-energy game with as good a team as we can muster is what we should do in the Quarters, we are a just a couple of games from a major trophy.

If we go at them I will guarantee they will be sitting back and waiting for a posibble killer break. They won’t get lucky again so I hope we are a couple of goals up by HT, make two changes at half time but press in midfield without letting them rest, keep the pressure away from the back four. Wheel out shola on 75 minutes. Job done, back four have an easy day, first choice mid have a nice warm up runout for sunday and our ineligibles will also be available. Easy peasy lemon squeezy invade the philippines like the japanese-y. :)

  • 36 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:09 PM

    Tsunki

Agree with that game plan. Spot on

Would be very tempted to bring young Campbell on after 70mins when we are 2 up to catch them on the break lol

  • 41 Sazzer // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:20 PM

We will beat Mackems with tired legs, so go for it in Europa league is a no brainer.

  • 42 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:23 PM

So how do we make this official then?

  • 43 Tsunki // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:25 PM

Northernirish – yep forgot about young campbell he actually might be a better sub than shola if we are saving him for slaying duties ha ha. I think campbell needs more first team runouts I am sure he will pick up speed quickly if he has a bit of time on the field with the big lads. I noticed he got caught on the ball against fulham a few times – welcome to the prem its a big step up from stiffs.

  • 44 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:26 PM

    Jamiemac
Anywhere on Walter Terrace, New Mills just off Barrack Road. Usually easy to park and not to far from the ground

  • 45 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Campbell has looked a little shaky, but that is to be expected. The other way of looking at it, in 2 late sub appearances we’ve scored 2 late goals…coincidence? I think not!

  • 46 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:27 PM

What about parking in our goal? Bet Pardew will be up for it, but no doubt UEFA will have a thing or two to say about it…miserable gits.

  • 47 Sazzer // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:28 PM

English-esque team against Mackems if everone else get tired legs.
    Elliot

    Campbell Shola

  • 55 89Norcal // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:46 PM

Got a feeling Sissoko might net a goal on thursday.

As long as we can keep a clean sheet it should be possible.

We actually were the better team for huge chunks of last weeks match, 2 of Benfica’s goals weren’t exactly class or impressive, one was a rebound.

  • 56 Toon-Prodigy // Apr 9, 2013 at 5:47 PM

3-1 Thursday and then nick it in extra time.

I think we’ll get 1 in the first half, press them high from the start of the second and get the crowd buzzing, the 12th man will will the guys on and Papiss crops up in the 93rd minute with the winner.

I don’t get it…why are so many people saying to virtually throw the game on Thursday to save ourselves for the mackems? I could sorta understand it if you were just that desparate to stuff them, but it’s more that you’re worried we might get dragged back into the relegation mix!

Sod all that. I think the chances of us getting relegated are really really slim, and I’d rather we go for the trophy! You know how long it’s been, so when you get to the quarters you have to give it a damn good go. A 2-0 win on Thursday, an aggregate win in the semis and we’re just one win away from a trophy. Go for it lads! Your adrenaline will take you through the ‘fascist’ mackems anyway!

Just come on the blog and I see Sissoko has said earlier what a great team spirit there is at the club.

    Funny eh …

There is ANOTHER player coming out saying good things about team spirit.

For all you Pardew haters, knockers, blah blah … how come such a useless manager, who you say is so negative, holds attacking players back blah blah … how come he has generated such a great team spirit amongst players who clearly love playing for NUFC?

Could it be because you are all wrong about Pards?

  • 77 Krul to be Kind // Apr 9, 2013 at 6:32 PM

    Norcal

They didn’t even have a shot against a poor Chelsea side at the weekend. Secondly I don’t think the manager change was a good idea and Di Canio certainly wasn’t the answer. I can see them going down which in reality isn’t good IMO because we lose the derby for a season at least, I’d be happy to see them finish 17th! haha

  • 78 89Norcal // Apr 9, 2013 at 6:39 PM

Been weighing on my mind as well, but we are so far ahead of scum in terms of class I wouldn’t mind seeing them go down and losing the derby. Course I’m not a thoroughbred Geordie :)

I just can’t wait until Di Canio is caught slinging racial epithets a la Luis Aragones, and brings even more shame to that club. Oh the hilarity that would ensue..

    Bills son
Pardew is by no means perfect tactically, but his motivational/man-management skills are very good. A lot of players have came out and said that Pardew is great at handling players and getting them motivated.

For me, if you can’t motivate players then tactics are pointless because they can’t be executed properly. I’m not saying Pardew is tactically clueless (like some) but he can definitely improve.

  • 85 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 6:50 PM

Super….Penalties? Oh dear, I’m already breaking out in a cold sweat :)

If it’s what we need to do, then of course – obviously would rather we just wrapped it up in 90 mins….or given the recent trend 90ish mins.

Don’t see throwing the game to avoid extra time though, that’s just mad. If we’re in the game then we must keep fighting!

Jesper…Adult discussion? You? Am I drunk?

  • 87 bills-son // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:00 PM

    Super Magpie – I agree.

I don’t think Pardew is the greatest tactician in the world but then there look at Benitez at Chelsea – supposedly tactically brilliant but a motivator?

My point – like yours – is that tactics without good man management, team spirit and motivation will get you nowhere. Good man management, team spirit and motivation with a decent dose of tactics can still get you a long way.

Those knocking Pardew are typical of football fans – and people in general – who go totally overboard in criticizing those they don’t personally like or believe should be perfect – often without knowing (or wanting to know) the true facts.

I’ll take the words of players who have worked with Pardew over the rantings of fans any day.

    Bills-son,

As usual, a shining ray of light on this blog.

Nit-picking at Pardews faults or wanting him sacked was never a viable answer to the short comings of this season. Sacking him nefore he has had a chance with a fully fit squad is deplorable.

We have a great squad in terms of where this football club has been this past few years. With what we have spent we are doing well. We don’t have amazing players, but good players, and players with potential who can become better.

I find it a cowardly and hasty outlook to lay all the blame at one persons feet for the shocking league campaign. It reeks of scapegoating and frustration.

I’v did some thorough research into this campaign, injuries, suspensions, what players were available during these spells in regards to our benchs. It’s hideous. There is no way on gods earth we could of signifantly did any better with this season. This season has been a write off before a ball was kicked due to bad decisions at the top and horrendous luck that disrupted us in every position. There are better managers than Pardew out there, but he hasn’t did anything anywhere near wrong to be sacked.

How we are in the quarters of Europa is a miracle in itself.

bills @86 – I see your position is that you will take the words of players who have worked with Percy over the rantings of fans.
I do not think you should restrict your beliefs based on the above mentioned criteria as you then invite criticisms from the likes of Tevez to become part of your beliefs -as you have set parameters which could include diverse comments.
    Link to what Tevez said:-

Got a feeling we’ll draw 2-2. I’d start Anita. He’s positive going forward. Perch is a tackler, but we need to attack.

  • 91 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:16 PM

Tuff…But hasn’t Tevez had problems with almost every manager wherever he has been? That includes Sir Alex, who like him or not is considered one of the very best managers of all time?

  • 92 Super Magpie // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:19 PM

    Ibiza
How about another stoppage time winner then? :D

    Bills son
    Spot on

    Mister Tuff
Is that the same Tevez who walked out on Man City for 6 months?

  • 93 Rotonda heights // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:20 PM

    Bills son

Benitez – 3 x CL finals with 2 different clubs. Smashed the Real – Barca dominance and won titles in Spain without big name or expensive players.

    Pardew – ???

I don’t think people hate or despise Pardew or anything like that and his obvious passion is to be hugely admired, but he can be very frustrating at times.

More long ball than Stoke for over half a season despite having a lot of technical touch players.

He weakly changed tactics to suit Ba. Negative sitting on 1-0 leads. Plays his favourites no matter if they are in form or not.

Playing people out of position (Cisse as a winger.) Marveaux on the bench too often. Anita can’t get a game ahead of Perch and Cabaye is often played too deep to be effective.

Too much emphasis on defense generally with the players we have. Now and again Pardew gives us a glimpse of something really wonderful but he needs to lose the fear and let other teams worry about us more.

I had a dream last night…… I got arrested for drink driving (me mam was the copper weirdly) on the cowgate roundabout after buying a KFC to temper my burgeoning alcohol levels.

    here come the good bit

I was twatted cas we’d just beaten Benfica (they were Barcelona in me dream like but hey…details) 2 nowt and I got tanked at the Tanners before driving home.

This i feel is a good omen as I live in Los Angeles and havent been back to Newcastle for 5 yrs…….. HWTL!!!!

remember the champions leagues under Sir Bobby…. group stages… lost first 3 won the last 3 went through…… just saying :)

  • 95 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:21 PM

Super…Well Pardew does like last minute winners according to Cisse, so why not?

I’ll tell you why not, my heart cannot stand it…I was in pieces on Sunday :)

  • 96 Alan Pas-de-clue // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:23 PM

aubameyang is looking for playing time above all else, could he choose us, potentially

  • 97 Big Pappa Cissé // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:24 PM

    @ dingo

Must be an omen for an NUFC win. Either that or your gunna get done for drink driving :)

    Bill-son

    Agree your points about Pards.

The comparison with Rafa as a motivator is a good point.
He has a reputation for never praising players – even Gerrard mentioned that .
However, he has won some big stuff – admittedly mostly with expensively assembled teams. If only AP can win something for the Toon.

Jesper…Community? Is this a new show which you haven’t yet recommended?

  • 103 Mister Tuff // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:41 PM

ibiza/super -I just make the point that if you put restraints on your own arguments/beliefs then you should perhaps have to stick to the parameters you have declared.
Perhaps better if boundaries are not set?

  • 104 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:44 PM

Tuff…I think you’re being a little difficult tbh.

The point is, are we to listen to our own players, who work with him on a day to day basis of fans on this blog, most of which only see 90 minutes of football and a few press releases?

Obviously nothing set in stone, but as a general guideline I think you get the point.
