Can Newcastle Reach The Europa League Semi-Finals?

We’re running a poll to see how Newcastle fans thinks we’ll fare on Thursday night in the second leg of our quarter final tie with Benfica, after we lost the first leg 3-1 in Lisbon.

europa league emblem

Newcastle can go through if we win 2-0 or 4-1, and a 3-1 final result after 90 minutes will take us into extra time on Thursday – although that will be difficult for our lads – given we’ll still  have to hammer Sunderland on Sunday.

It’s a straight vote – yes or no.

Pardumb needs to learn the art of underpromising and overdelivering.

Repost as Ed wrote new article

has anyone seen the bbc article on how goal line technology will work?

the referee wears a watch and if the ball crosses the line it comes up instantly on his watch GOAL

    INSTANTLY

No wait, no slowing of the game. INSTANTLY

how long did it take Blatter to consent to this :/

I understand with fouls/offsides that this is a different matter entirely

with fouls we simply have to allow retrospective punishment if necessary, in the same way red cards can be rescinded they should be distributed postgame if required

bad offside calls are something i dont think we will ever get rid of, but hey they provide a talking point and the decisions ‘even themselves out over a season’

Alittle of subject lads but although improving the squad is a must and theres some gems being suggested belhandar my fav atm by the way … I believe its just as important to seriously look at our sports science department and training regimes/facilities as the amount of injuries we have and still are suffering is beyond a joke! Every team has this problem to a level but it seems like its never ending with our lads wheres it going to stop!!!

Not meaning to be picky here, but the question asked is “Can we” and err, yes we can. So anyone who said no is just plain wrong 🙂

Now “will we” is another question altogether.

Yes we can most certainly reach the semis, whether we do or not is another story. but step back and think, 1 match from the semis, who would have thought it. we have had a a great run regardless, lets go and give it our all against benfica

    on thursday

    best scenario to worst scenario

    1) Win in 90mins
    2) Lose in 90 mins
    3) Win in 120 mins
    4) Lose in 120 mins

If we win in 90 mins i think our momentum will take us through for the derby, any other result and we are seriously stuffed in terms of fatigue

the reason i say i would rather lose in 90 than win in 120 is that if we lose against sunderland, which we may well do if we are forced to play 120 mins 3 days in advance, we are right back in the relegation mix

Alan…Seems simple enough. One hurdle at a time and all that. Gets rid of one issue and it’s a crucial one tbh. We can argue about in play stuff all we like, but something as simple as did the ball cross the line can and needs to be addressed imo.

Geordie…I really know little about our set up, but we do seem to pick up an awful lot of injuries, well, more so than a lot of clubs, so it should at least be looked at.

I hope he does not play anita in defensive mid. Play Tiote, Bigirimana, Momo or Perch there please! Also Marveaux & Cabaye are too fragile and important to play 3 games in 7 days. Please give him a break midweek and let obertan have a go. We need to stop taking unnecessary risks

    Thursday:…………Elliot
    Anita….Saylor..Mbiwa…Haidara
    Obertan…Bigirimana..Sissoko..Jonas
    …………Cisse…Shola.

    Sunday:……………Krul
    Simpson..Saylor…Mbiwa…Jonas/Haidara
    ……………….Tiote..Sissoko…
    .Marveaux……………Cabaye…….Gouffran
    …………………………..Cisse

    @ Alan

So you would rather lose in 90 than win in 120 ? . We could get to the semi finals of Europe, no matter how tired it makes our players

Imagine if we never gave them two goals away ? How excited and optimistic we would be ! Think if would be worth bringing HBA back is we get threw, he could win it for us. Let him rest til next season if we go out though eh ?

Pardew has already made it clear that we need to “be patient”, keep a clean sheet and nick a goal or two late. Those comments, plus the fact that we have 3 huge games in 8 days concluding with the Derby with Premier League status not yet secured, lead me to believe these should be our lineups:

    Benifca. 4-5-1
    Krul
    Simpson-Taylor-MBiwa-Haidara
    Obertan-Tiote-Marveaux-Anita-Jonas
    Shola
    Bench:Eliot,Perch,Colo,Cabaye,Sissoko, Ben Arfa, Cisse

If we are within a shout in the last 20 mins you can switch to a 4-3-3 and throw on Cisse, Cabaye, Sissoko and/or HBA. If we are out of it you can bring on Perch & Colo to rest Taylor and Tiote.

    Makems: 4-2-3-1
    Krul
    Debuchy-Taylor-Colo-Haidara
    Tiote-Cabaye
    HBA-Sissoko-Gouffran
    Cisse
    Bench: Eliot, MBiwa,Anita,Jonas,Obertan, Marveaux, Shola

That would give us 7 changes with enough fresh legs, hopefully, to slay the Makems.

    HWTL!!!

Big Pappa, I know nothing is certain and anything can happen, but i would avoid relegation at any cost. due to our long term plan our time in europe will come, weve waited so many years we can wait a bit longer.

if we get relegated which is a massive possibility again should we lose the derby, i dont think we will bounce back like we did before. and all of our slow building process will be gone out of the window.

this season especially, survival is paramount

Good point is this why we have the injuries, unnecessary risks with all the extra games ? Also I would play Bigi he looks mature beyond his years, if your good enough your old enough, will be better than Anita chasing shadows in midfields although I am a fan of his.

I don’t really understand Pardew’s thinking here. Surely we have to go for it from the first whistle. We could find ourselves running out of time and giving ourselves too much to do.

The first 20 mins in Lisbon they were clearly rattled and we just have to re-produce that for longer and no more Santon and Saylor ridiculous errors please.

Course we can reach the semi finals! Keep the faith, i think teams underestimate us, there attack is worrying though but i believe Yanga-Mbwia is proving to be an excellent CB.

My prediction came true last match and I now predict we will win 2-0 with Cisse grabbing a brace!

Is that what they call an Obermoron?

(meaning:. a combination of the words “Obertan” and “Oxymoron”)

Three point’s against sunderland if far more important, not because of it being a derby, but because we are still not safe in the league

Of course we can beat them!!
They looked okay at there place but the score line was flattering and we gifted them 2 goals, infact an hour in and that score line could of been 3-1 to us if cisse shots had been 2 inches further left, talk about unlucky!!
No reason we can’t beat them at SJP

Don’t think we’ll go through on Thursday but I think we’ll win 2-1.

The score line really flattered Benfica as we should have been out of sight, but luck has been something that’s deserted us all season long.
We can’t allow them to settle and need to be direct from the first whistle

I think Anita plays better at right back then in the midfield.
    Good positioning and crosses.
Plus, doesn’t have to deal with the physical combat in midfield.

Hey guys, I’m travelling up to SJP for the first time by car (been countless times on the train) on Thursday (can’t wait) and was wondering if anybody knows any decent places to park near(ish) to the ground and also how bad the traffic gets in Newcastle at rush hour?

Any help would be much appreciated

It should be interesting so see what Pardew prioritises, trying to secure our prem status (convieniently in the derby) or going for it against benfica, who’d be a manager

I understand toonbrothers idea but with that europa team we will be beaten. I think playing a high-energy game with as good a team as we can muster is what we should do in the Quarters, we are a just a couple of games from a major trophy.

If we go at them I will guarantee they will be sitting back and waiting for a posibble killer break. They won’t get lucky again so I hope we are a couple of goals up by HT, make two changes at half time but press in midfield without letting them rest, keep the pressure away from the back four. Wheel out shola on 75 minutes. Job done, back four have an easy day, first choice mid have a nice warm up runout for sunday and our ineligibles will also be available. Easy peasy lemon squeezy invade the philippines like the japanese-y. 🙂
