Reports Newcastle Want To Sign Loic Remy In The Summer

7:39 pm, Tuesday, April 9th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 107 Comments

Metro is reporting that Newcastle will go after Loic Remy in the summer if QPR are relegated, and of course the French striker will leave the London club via that release clause he has in his contract.

loic remy qpr

Loic Remy - Newcastle still interested

We’d be very surprised if this news was true, after Loic rejected Newcastle for more money in January, and joined a club that has only around 17,000 in home gates, and was literally rock bottom of the league when he signed.

But it seems that Remy would have been a great acquisition for Newcastle, if we had signed him in January, since he’s scored 5 goals in 8 league appearances for QPR, who now look like they will be relegated in May.

Newcastle had been in the driver’s seat in January to sign the striker to replace Demba Ba, who went to Chelsea,  but at the very last moment QPR crept in and signed the French International striker.

They did it by offering him sky high wages, and Tony Fernadandes the owner got personally involved, but he wouldn’t get those wages at Newcastle this summer.

Newcastle were less than happy with his agents and Remy himself,  that they were blind-sided by them meeting in London with QPR,  without Newcastle’s knowledge.

There is news that Aston Villa want the striker, but we think there will be a lot more clubs than just Villa who will want Loic Remy in the summer,  after his good goal scoring form for QPR.

Let us know if you think we should sign Loic this summer – given what happened in January.

Should Newcastle Sign Loic Remy This Summer

Obviously left us feeling a bit sour after January, but he was deemed good enough before, has shown his credentials at a joke of a team since, so why not?

  • 2 yo-yo // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:42 PM

If Villa had Remy and Benteke they’d be a real threat to a lot of defences – better he comes to the Toon

  • 3 Blaydon-Toon // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Would take Benteke and Remy then we would have great attacking options with Pappis !

  • 4 Dannyo // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Chronicle said Newcastle WON’T go after Remy, now the Metro says we will.
I know which of the lesser evil I’m picking.

  • 5 northernirishtoon // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:49 PM

Don’t know why anyone would say no. Everyone was hurt when he fecked off to qpr. That was a very depressing day

But there is no question he would improve our team.

  • 6 JAMSHA // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:50 PM

Wen Do We Play Our Final League Match?

  • 7 89Norcal // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:50 PM

imo he’s a mercenary in the making. If he was inclined to go to a rock bottom club for sake of drawing a bigger check, he could just as easily leave us if a bigger club shows interest.

I suppose as a last resort though should Aubameyang get swooped up.

  • 8 northernirishtoon // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:51 PM

If we don’t get pea I’d take him in a heartbeat

  • 9 Mister Tuff // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:51 PM

Whilst Remy probably did not behave correctly and perhaps reneged on what he was initially going to do after being waylaid by Dirty Harry, without doubt he is a good footballer.
That goal at the weekend was class – a side footer from in excess of 30 yards. Most players would have controlled the ball and took it further on before taking a shot. Really audacious to contemplate it in the first place.
Type of player we need is of the Remy/Aubameyang/Belhanda type.

  • 10 mally72 // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:51 PM

In two minds on Remy he is a good player but at the toon he wouldn’t get the wage he is wanting and would leave at the first opportunity for more cash. We want players who want to play football for the fans and getting a few grand a week to do it is a bonus

  • 11 JAMSHA // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:51 PM

voted yes… he mayb greedy.. but we need quality.. we cnt depend on.cisse

  • 12 Dannyo // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:55 PM

Bony, Remy, Aubumeyang (will never remember how it’s spelt unless he signs) all great candidates imo.

  • 13 ochytoon // Apr 9, 2013 at 7:55 PM

I would still take him. He’d be a quality option in addition to Cisse

  • 14 toon-farmer // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Be very surprised if he went to villa don’t think m.a and d.l would have him @ sjp after he had turned his back on us in jan. Take pea any day looks class act

  • 15 Toon-Prodigy // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:06 PM

    I’d take him over Carroll

Don’t know if anyone has noticed this yet but was looking at the league table and realised that only manure, Chelsea and city have won more home games than newcastle all season and no one has lost more away games

    Thinks that’s hard to believe

How come we have been so bad away from home

    How come we have been

  • 18 northernirishtoon // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:08 PM

Was nearly typing that out again lol

  • 19 t00ntime // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:12 PM

Newspapers arent to be trusted but metro seems more right to me than the chronicle. I mean if remy is free, do people really think DL+MA wont see that as a great deal? 10million cheaper than 6months ago.

  • 20 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:13 PM

Northern Irish….That is quite surprising. I knew our away from has been awful, but wouldn’t have featured us as being one of the top home performers…suppose that’s something :)

Can’t think of a reason why we’ve been so poor on the road however…how come indeed.

  • 21 Dannyo // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:14 PM

    @t00ntime
    Wages mate, wages.

  • 22 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:14 PM

t00ntime…Free? That can’t be right, surely?

  • 23 northernirishtoon // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:15 PM

If we can be so prolific at home then surely we should be doing better away from home

  • 24 yo-yo // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Remy will come with a whacking agents fee

  • 25 Dannyo // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:20 PM

    @northernirishtoon
What the stat says is really our lack of belief.
Winning home and away is often about mentality. We think it’s easier to win home, therefor play with more confidence, with a bad record away, that just continues until you can get a run of results.

  • 26 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:21 PM

Dannyo…Good to see you posting again, you seemed to have vanished of late.

  • 27 t00ntime // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:22 PM

    @dannyo good point.

@ibizia depends if u believe rumours or not lol. Sum say he has a relegation clause letting him walk out ( like ba) others say half price if they are relegated (5mil) others say no clause at all.

I think aub shud be first target but if he fails remy is number 2 for me.

  • 28 northernirishtoon // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:22 PM

If we won as many away games as we have home games we would be sitting second

I know if your granny had balls she would be your granda but its interesting all the same

  • 29 STB // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:23 PM

Spurs or arsenal . Whoever makes it to CL.

  • 30 nick_9 // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:23 PM

Northern Irish – Reading have lost more away from home that us but you’re right regarding home games, we’re up there with the best on home turf.

Perhaps we need to look at why we are so bad away from home. Are we leaving it too late to travel or has lousy travel arrangements?

On remy you can see the boy is a quality player and if he was available for a couple of million he would be an excellent addition. I would need to swallow some pride though as being turned down for more money at qpr has left a foul taste. Imagine this current side with Remy in the eleven, cisse, remy and bena arfa would make an excellent attacking three.

  • 31 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:25 PM

t00ntime…I will laugh so hard I may actually die if they have given him a get out of jail “free” card – I really will. Surely QPR weren’t that stupid? Surely? :)

  • 32 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:26 PM

Right lads…I’m off. Take it easy.

  • 33 northernirishtoon // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:27 PM

I actually meant no one has won less away games than us lol. Was confusing myself

  • 34 wolfshead@toon // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:27 PM

if ba gets moved on from chelsea why not buy him back for 5mill? just a thought i havent been on in a while did i read we are after pirlo? just a dream lol :-)

  • 35 TorqToon // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:27 PM

    Heart says no…

    Head says hell yeah!

He had no loyalty to us, or anybody else. His time at QPR has shown he can cut it in the Orem, and in that respect, maybe QPR did us a favour.

Aubameyang IS our #1 target, but Remy would be a good option. He plays his best football alongside a second striker ie cisse.

  • 36 nick_9 // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:27 PM

Another little stat for you guys –

Only villa and Wigan have lost more at home than us.

  • 37 Dannyo // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:30 PM

    @Ibiza
Cheers :) I’m always around, but I’ve become this horrible twitter person, so I’ve kept myself there.

  • 38 nick_9 // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:31 PM

NorthernIrish – ah i see, 1 away win in 16 is lousy as is 10 defeats. Its been a pretty strange season. If we can get another striker in and get everyone fit for the start of next season then we could be in for a treat

  • 39 kevymartins // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:36 PM

I would like to see us sign Remy, he definitely looks the part, so what he turned us down for money that could set him up for life, I have a great affinity for the company I work for but I am going to China for two years in July with another mob, the reason being the money is much
    better.Simples.

  • 44 Topbanana // Apr 9, 2013 at 8:55 PM

He has an £8 million get out clause in his contract when QPR are relegated, not free.

  • 45 toonarmydownsouth // Apr 9, 2013 at 9:00 PM

Would love to see us sign remy gutted we missed out in jan cracking player
Those saying no to signing him to be honest are just being petty, calling him a merc etc.
So your remy and a club who are 16th in the league, seemingly in free fall put a bid in but can’t be ars3d to send a club rep out to meet you in France or even London! But a club sitting 20th who have just appointed a new manager, recognised throughout Europe, who’s signing some decent players and look like they could turn there season round, makes a bid and then doubles your wages!
Anyone saying they would of signed for us is talking out there ars3

  • 46 santonthenewmaldini // Apr 9, 2013 at 9:08 PM

  • 48 KRadiation // Apr 9, 2013 at 9:17 PM

As far as talent goes, I want to say yes.

His attitude off the pitch puts me off though. I feel like if he did come he’d be another Demba Ba getting his agents to sniff out a bigger club for more money. He’d use us as a stepping stone just like he has at QPR.
I think the main reason he went to QPR was knowing full well they’d go down, so he can shine there as a big fish in a small pond, get relegated, get his premiership rust shaken off and advertise himself.

I’d pass and look for someone who actually chooses to join us.

  • 63 Harley // Apr 9, 2013 at 9:51 PM

Very interesting that the poll says almost 50-50 yet the majority of posts say they want him.

I’d take him for sure. He’s a class player and everyone would’ve chosen a London club paying an extra million a year. That’s a lot of money!!!

On another note. After tonight’s champions league games it’s proved anything is possible in Europe. I can’t wait for Thursday!!!!

  • 64 voodoo85 // Apr 9, 2013 at 9:57 PM

If signing Remy was to make a difference between finishing 5th/6th next season and 4th then i would sign him up. Don’t like what happened but i can forgive if he starts banging goals in for the toon

  • 65 toonarmydownsouth // Apr 9, 2013 at 9:58 PM

  • 68 martoon // Apr 9, 2013 at 10:16 PM

I think Remy would be a good fit for the team football wise but I think his character is suspect. As this is one of the things we check these days I doubt we’ll sign him.

I’m a bit divided about Remy, I’m currently swaying towards the ‘no’ faction, however, I can’t help but feel he would improve our team. Guess I am also a little bitter and twisted over the way he shunned us in the past.

  • 74 bollance // Apr 9, 2013 at 10:40 PM

Good player. But suspect injury record and attitude. Too much at 10m €

Better value elsewhere? (I would have taken him on a free though)

10m € buys a quality striker these days who wants to play for the toon.

  • 81 Barras // Apr 9, 2013 at 10:51 PM

I strongly believe that Newcastle United will not sign Loic Remy.

His materialistic priorities would clash with the type of integrity we have within the squad – Cisse, Sissokho, Cabaye etc. Having said that, he seems to have materialistic priorities, but I do not know him as a person and I certainly won’t judge him. I’m just using this as an example for why I think Loic Remy will not be joining Newcastle.

Loic Remy messed around the board and Pardew, and I don’t think they will tolerate that.

Get Remy in, at worst we get a couple of seasons out of him then sell him for a good price. So sign him but don’t put a stupid Ba like release clause in the contract unless its for over 15mill.

  • 85 geordie157 // Apr 9, 2013 at 10:57 PM

That guilavogui is decent, not sure how much he’s worth. Would prefer Capoue if we want to replace Tiote this summer.

  • 86 bollance // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:03 PM

Torres earns £25 every minute. What a player he was, better than Suarez is now? I think so

  • 87 bollance // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:06 PM

If we are looking at buying midfielders then we should look at ones who can also play centre back. If we learn anything by this season it is that injuries can take as many as 10 out of action at a time so having versatility is a must. Perch has really prospered and Guti is looking like finally finding some form. Shame perch has joined the injured list.

  • 88 santonthenewmaldini // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:14 PM

Getting lightening Pace is essential in the summer up front Gouffran is quick and if we had him and Remy playing at the same time teams would be shit scared of playing a high line which means that we could start to dominate teams

A lot of teams have played high lines against us to totally dominate us and we have struggled but i think next season will be different

  • 89 Bloater // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Don’t think going for someone who turned us down is a good idea. Atmosphere in dressing room is apparently great due to all foreign players buying into the philosophy (well apart from Obertan perhaps). On another note is it correct the club are having a minute silence for Thatcher tomorrow night.

  • 90 ToonDarnSarf // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:26 PM

No chance. He didn’t want to come to an excellent club for decent PL wages in January, so why would he now? He chose a much smaller club that are splashing the cash, I don’t want him around to disrupt the squad.

  • 91 yo-yo // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:27 PM

    Bloater

    Hope that is a joke.
The only connection Thatcher had with Newcastle was closing down most of the industry.

  • 92 yo-yo // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:30 PM

I agree Remy might be a disruptive influence – but he was top of our list, so Carr must have had a think about whether he’d fit in.

I’d rather sign players who really want to come to us – hope PEA realises what being a Toon hero could do for him.

  • 93 Bloater // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:34 PM

Certainly not a joke. Heard it is true. I certainly wouldn’t want it. I think vast majority would be in agreement. Could be another own goal. However, if fans boo it it will not reflect badly on her but on us. I think people should just remain seated in dignified protest.

  • 94 Tsunki // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:57 PM

    Bloater – not boater? Hmm.

I didn’t stand for the Thatcher thing before nor will I for this one. I lived through that era, and – I know, I know, politics etc – but no, She’s not for turning, especially in her grave, so I will stay seated.

Remy? Well we did buy a a journeyman who was shining in a rubbish team destined for relegation before didn’t we? We would get exactly the same thing.

  • 95 Shearer.Milburn // Apr 9, 2013 at 11:58 PM

It actually baffles me as to why people are surprised that a player would join a club other than ours for 20-30,000 pound a week more. Why would remy have any loyalty to us at all in the first place? I earn about £400 a week and I love my job but if someone offered me 600 a week to do the same job somewhere else id say yes please!!!

  • 96 Bloater // Apr 10, 2013 at 12:18 AM

Tsunki the bloater goes back three decades when I went away to college. One of the lads thought North Easterners called kippers bloaters and it just stuck. Remaining seated is the best response if a minute silence occurs. People say about respecting the dead but it makes a mockery of the symbolism for people you truly respect. I can never forget what she did. The fact there will be a state funeral, in all but name, shows it is not a private event; it is legitimising what she did. I would not party but I do not shed a tear!

  • 97 lesh // Apr 10, 2013 at 1:13 AM

I wonder whether Remy’s agents were keeping him fully aware over who was offering what?

After all, the better the pay for Remy, the bigger the ‘commision’ (kickback?) from QPR, the better off they were. Maybe Remy trusted his agents too much?

  • 98 AwToonnufc // Apr 10, 2013 at 1:53 AM

Could think of a few strikers I would choose before him. PEA being at the top. however if half of the fans want newcastle to sign Carroll for 10 Million.then they should be happy enough for newcastle to sign Remy. As they are both quite similar scenarios. would happily pick Remy over that option.

  • 99 toonicle // Apr 10, 2013 at 3:18 AM

Not a chance. He made his choice in January, why reward him by signing to a team that really looks like it can make a good run next year if he wasn’t willing to help us through the hard patch we were in?

I don’t regard him as mercenary for opting for a significantly higher salary, but after the way he did it, I don’t think MA and DL would make another approach.

I’m surprised so many voted yes. I think he’s a good player and we need a pacy little striker. Hell, we’ve needed on for a long tim to balance out the Cisse/ Ameobi style striker.

It’s a shame he opted for QPR but I can’t see us coming in for him again and if we did I’m sure now with his showing in the PL other mid table and possibly higher teams will be in for him with a better pay packet.

We all know money is his driving force. But I guess, before we start talking about who we should buy, etc we should make sure we’re in the PL.

Toonicle: I don’t know the details obviously but I’m pretty sure there would be a decent fee in place not a move for nowt. Much like Ba from us to Chelsea.

Toonincheck: Agree. The way he spoke to QPR in secret was not real trustworthy or professional. Can’t see MA going in for him again.

The difference I see though is you’re earning £400. If it got increased to £600 then you’re going to really feel the difference.
When you’re earning thousands a week and someone adds a few more thousand on….. The effect is hardly going to be felt. Ita not as if he’s going to blow through his wages every week on bills and shopping like most of us normal folk do and that extra gives him some freedom. He could go on a spending spree every week on what Newcastle offered him and still have more left over than most of us get in multiple years..

I don’t think it boils down to the wage though. I forget who put it perfectly above (or in another report) but the new manager, other signings, promise of turning the club around… Those things probably tempted him more than just the cash. Some people can be really motivated into playing for lesser struggling sides due to the challenge and if it works, the eventual hero status they’d get.

Barras: Materialistic priorities? Do you mean went for a bigger pay packet? I’m pretty sure all footballers these days (and most other people) have materialistic priorities! I’m sure Sissoko and the other Frenchmen came to NUFC for more money.

I like him and if we could get him on the cheap through clauses in his contract and if he’s willing to agree to a reasonable wage I’d take him. However he’s already proved he’s motivated by money so his mentality is not what we are looking for. He’s already made a name for himself in the premiership so it’s unlikely we will even consider him. Not really that boshed to be honest.
