Newcastle fans can be a positive lot when the team is involved in a tough game, and so it has proved in our latest poll.
Newcastle fans – confident?
We’ve put up a poll asking whether readers think we will progress tomorrow night and a full 60% of readers think that will happen.
So it’s almost two in three fans who think we can do it tomorrow night – probably by a 2-0 score.
Here’s the current results of the poll, and it’s still open if you haven’t yet voted.
Comments always welcome.

Ok….. Maggie Thatcher has only been in hell 2 days and has already shut down 10 furnaces. Oohh little bit of politics, there.

We are the most “direct” side in the EPL
If we are playing 17% passes 25 yds + that is one pass in six
If Man City are playing 12% passes 25 yds + that is one pass in eight.
Basically we are only playing five 25yd+ passes in every hundred passes more than Man City.(a lower/mid ranked side for long passes)
Dunno if the stats include goalie clearances – suspect they do.
I’d prefer to see aerial passes of over 25 yds (ball over head height) as a defining stat for hoofers – 25yds on the deck is direct but is not hoofball imo.
You can abuse stats really easily

Comment #43If we are back in for remy then to me that says that we know we are out of the running for PEA
i dont think we can stop benfica from scoring.
go ahead through yohan free kick,
sissoko deflected strike goes in and we are all going crazy,
pards makes us go defensive and we concede in the 85th minute,
he brings on ben arfa who scores a magical wondergoal and its 3-1,
goes to extra time. 30 mins of nerve shattering stretched play but no goals later, cisse pops up in the 120th minute to send us through.
am i dreaming again??

Comment #46I personally like lens more because i live in holland so i automatically dislike belgiums 😛
Mertens is probably the better winger, better goal scoring ratio etc. both only 25 years old. I think either one would be a great buy, but mertens would probably be quite a bit dearer so lens seems a more likely option as either wud be Back-up for aub/remy/hba (tho they wud both be good enought to start on the left)

Debuchy-mbiwa-staylor-santon
————–cabaye-sissoko——
—Ben arfa—-marveux—-lens/mertens
——————aub/remy———
This would be my attacking team if we bought remy/aub and lens/mertens.
U can also go more defensive with jonas, tiote, perch etc.

Comment #48The joke names are worse than Alain de Pardieu.
2-0 Toon at half time – just like it should have been in Portugal.
Benfica to score early second half and we’ll pile it on the last fifteen minutes. Score 87 mins for 3-1.

Comment #49Going to be incredibly tough to win this one. Can’t see us progressing tbh.
Would be one of the best European nights in my memory, If we do it.
I guess we could win 2-0.
Hopefully
Krul
Simpson, Mbiwa, Taylor, Haidara
Cabay, Tiote

Comment #56Surely if remy is a money grabber then he would stay at qpr.
If he moves it is unlikely he will be on same cash.
If he came to us we would offer him less then he is on because of our wage cap.

Comment #67Cheers for the info snippets Torq. Much appreciated, and even better when you’re givin’ the players themselves a nudge and a wink to the delights of being a hero at St. James’ 🙂
I’ve tweeted Aubameyang with the wonders in store for him being a hero at 52,000 St.James’ (written in French) type of thing, but that’s all I can really do.

Comment #74I think it’s 50/50 who gets the first goal and 50/50 again for the 2nd which is needed. By my calculation that gives us 1 in 4 chance of getting to that scoreline. Hopefully we can defend like hell until the final whistle if that happens.
Would love to see it, will be keeping everything crossed for it but I don’t really expect us to win.

yes, I would. And HBA and Sissoko and Cisse after him.
1st I said- p room web site says he is inj. 2nd- I really hope they r wrong and dont want Perch for him. But I m happy Graham will miss our game (Scums r without attack) and gardner picked 10th yellow so also missed

Comment #79Carrol would definitely = more hoofball. It may not be intentional but when you are that tall players get lazy and just hoof it at every opportunity. Crouch + Stoke scenario

He ditched it to keep a certain Mr Ba happy but yes we looked far better as a 433 and always have done
Only difference I would have with your team is maybe
swap Sissoko’s and Marveaux’s positions.
