Newcastle have today been linked with 21 year-old attacking Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to Algemeen Dagblad.
Christian Eriksen – Newcastle interested in 21 year-old
And it seems that when Christian was just 16 years old, Newcastle were interested in the player, but he elected to join the famous Ajax Academy in 2008, and he has played for all the Danish Youth sides, and 34 times already for the full Danish National side.
The 5’10” tall Dane was born in Middelfart, Denmark and is skilled with both feet, and has given some great displays this season, and it seems that both Liverpool and Tottenham are also interested in acquiring the player in the summer, with Liverpool thought to be leading the race to sign him.
It seems that Ajax are almost certain to allow their top youngster to leave the famous Dutch club this summer, and the 21 year-old is regarded as one of the best young players in Europe at the moment.
It may help Newcastle that we did a deal for Vurnon Anita last summer, and of course Anita will be able to give the Newcastle manager Alan Pardew some in formation on just how good this lad is.
Christian has played 189 times for Ajax with 31 goals and 63 assists, since making his debut back in early 2010, when he was still 17, and he made his Danish full international debut in February 2010, in Denmark’s friendly match against Austria, after he had just turned 18.
Eriksen was part of the final Danish squad of 23 participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and he was the youngest player who participated in that tournament, and played two group matches, against the Netherlands and Japan.
His contract runs out in June of next year, so maybe he would be available at a reasonable price for Newcastle.
Newcastle center-back target Toby Alderweireld is also expected to leave Ajax this summer, as is 24 year-old Siem de Jong, whom Newcastle were reported to be interested in during the recent January transfer window.
So it could be that Newcastle bring in another Ajax player this summer, after bringing midfielder Vurnon Anita to the club last summer.
Christian would be a tremendous acquisition for Newcastle but we face some very strong competition, especially from Liverpool.
Note: For those attending Thursday’s game (and Sunday too) please bring your scarves to the the game, as there is an effort to recreate the atmosphere at Alan Shearer’s testimonial, and hopefully inspire our lads to two famous wins.
