Can’t understand how Marveuax didn’t start, we needed to win this game by two clear goals and our only creative player is sat just behind the defence

  • 2 do the hatem shake // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:11 PM

ed give us a chance to comment haha

  • 3 DevonMag // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:11 PM

    So fast here Ed!

Pardew got his tactics spot on for me. Nearly had ‘em! Recruitment drive in the summer and a fresh crack at the league with a full compliment of decent players and we should have ourselves a great season next year. Reckon we’ll be a real force!
Now for the Mackems. Come on lads, pick yaselfs up and tear ‘em a new one.

Say goodbye to thursday night football + side its good to have benny back

  • 5 catchy in norway // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:12 PM

how can anyone say pardew got it right?

we didnt start to attack until 70 mins :S

he had nothing to loose, he should have went for it from the begining,

but hey thats his style, always a loser

  • 6 Eddie // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

    Never rated the Europa 😉
They gave Benfica a damn good run for their money and took the edge off their piri-piri.
Lovely to see Benny and Marv on the pitch at the same time.
Roll on the big one against the Black Shirts/Cats.

  • 7 Cisse's Big Toe // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

we are a cb, a lb and a cm away from a top top team

fancy us to tear sunderland apart. most dangerous animal is a wounded one.

  • 8 papscrunt // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Great effort, couldn’t ask much more tbh. Same sort of commitment on Sunday and it should be all good. Benfica are a very good technical side. Way better than the makems. We keep 11 on the pitch, and we win on suday.

  • 9 ochytoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Can’t believe people are moaning at the result tonight. We turned it on and outplayed the Portuguese Champions for half the match. Unfortunately, as has been the case this season, luck just wasn’t on our side. Can’t fault the lads or Pardew tonight, excellent display I feel.

  • 10 Transfer Sage // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

He was sat down at the end of the last game. Might have been exhausted. Keep it tight, try for a set piece goal like we nearly did and then bring him and benny on to wrap it up.

    Think that must be it

  • 11 ToonDownSouth // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Welcome back, it’s always a shame when you disappear after a Newcastle win.

But we lose against Europe’s most in form team, and what a surprise – here you are!

You truly are nothing if not predictable 😉

  • 12 Gleese // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Very proud of pardew and the lads…did everything right and were desperately unlucky in the end. Credit to the tactics spot on…if we had attacked them all night they would have definitely caught us on the break at some point and then the game would have been dead! We had them rattled and as gutted as I am i cant fault anything…I think we should all be very proud of them!!!

  • 13 lucasnufc // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Anyone criticising Pardew for tactics needs their head checking. He got it spot on. This benfica side are quality. No doubt they would have picked us apart if we’d gone gung ho. So close but fantastic effort from everyone involved. Can’t wait till Sunday now. Howay!

  • 14 Tinman // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

geordie006, I have no doubt if Newcastle played in that league they would be 36 games unbeaten. You cant go quoiting those figures without looking what league they are actually in. And anyway your wrong they lost in their league cup about a month ago.

    Pardew made mistakes tonight:
Starting Williamson – he cant pass out of defence for shit, all this ends up doing is wasting us time.
Dropping/Resting Marveaux – abosulutley ludicrous. Wouldnt of minded Bigi in for Anita, but Bigi for Marveaux is a joke.
Bringing Ameobi on at HT – hes shocking. Gives away free kicks, wasting time.
Waiting too long to bring on Ben Arfa and Marveaux – game changed when they came on, what more can I say?

Oh and while I am at it. Have been backing Cisse for MONTHS. He has been fantastic over the last month. Tonight showed his passion for our club. He was everywhere tonight. Not even sure if he will have the energy to walk tomorrow. He left his heart and soul on that pitch.

  • 15 MUTINYbyLEMONS // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Shame we won’t Europa next season. Really enjoyed it this year.

  • 16 JackButler // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Problem is come Sunday we’ll be back to a defensive setup

  • 17 Gleese // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

    @Ochytoon….Spot On mate!

  • 18 Transfer Sage // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

For the sake of half a yard we had a goal in the first half…so not like we did nothing.

As long as we got our first by the 70th minute we had a great chance….we did just never managed to get the 2nd.

I’m proud of that performance (apart from first half) WE ARE A TOP TEAM, coz u know why? its because in the second half we put one of the best teams in the world under immense pressure and dominated them, now the mackems have a bigger reason to be scared. i’m proud to be a fan of newcastle united, a win against the scum would really brighten up my morning going back to school!

  • 21 do the hatem shake // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

pardew tactics where spot on we could of had two goals before are all out attack a mean cisse great movement just learn the f@cking rule

  • 22 toonLYF // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

why is about 35% of this blog retarded? :S

We have nothing to be ashamed of tonight, Pardew got it spot on. Done exactly what he said he wanted to, and special credit needs to go to players such as Papiss Cisse for working harder than anyone on the pitch, and scoring, once again! Shola, Hatem, Sylvain, Williamson and Simpson all very good too i think.

  • 23 ToonDownSouth // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

    Please ignore him.

European quarter final. Nothing else needs saying.

  • 24 toonking // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

if you lot think it was pardew was correct with his tactics today then i guess we should start with this team apart from simmo and bigi who we replace with goffran and debuchy as draws should be good enough for us to suvive.

  • 25 Big Pappa Cissé // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

One good thing about tonight was seeing Ben Arfa & Marv in the same team. They were both brilliant. I will feel slightly better if we can smash the scum 5-0 at the weekend and this should be the team to do it.

  • 39 ochytoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:18 PM

I was impressed by the way Pards set up the team to be honest. We contained them well in the first half. If we had attacked from the off then they would have no doubt caught us on the counter and killed the tie off early. Then it would have likely been a waste of time, tiring our players for no reason for an hour. Pards brought the right players on in the second half and with a bit of luck, we could have gone through tonight. Oh well, that’s football. No complaints, we’ve been great in Europe this season and have definitely increased our clubs profile.

  • 40 JackButler // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:18 PM

We left it too late to try to win the game, our return from set piece’s this season is negligible, out final ball is still sunday league standard.

Teams like Benfica are simply not going to hand you the victory, you have to go out and take them and we only tried to do this for 20 min’s

  • 41 DevonMag // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:18 PM

right Catchy, nothing to lose? You honestly think a 2-0 scoreline at home was completely out of the question? He got it spot on; keep it tight and look for a cheeky goal for the first hour, then – if we’ve managed to keep it level – bring on the flair and have at them. We scored one and could so easily have had another. I’m not entirely sure what you think tactics are, if not a calculated gameplan which came agonisingly close to coming off?
Also, Ben Arfa and Marveaux clearly couldn’t be played from the start. I take it you don’t play football yourself, and have never had to come back from injury or exhaustion? I wonder if you’ll be complaining if either of those two have an impact for us on Sunday.

Gung-ho from the start and none of us would have had a match to enjoy; we would have been out of the tie in the first half. Personally I preferred the drama of a competitive game.

  • 42 yo-yo // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Catchy – you mackem warrior in disguise ?

Tactically well called by Alain de Pardieu.
Beaten by a CL standard side having a great run of form. Close but no cigar .. bring on the unwashed

  • 43 LGFUAD21 // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:18 PM

    Oh well. Disappointed.

Think Pards got it right near enough. Lured them into a false sense of security and then dominated the last 20 mins.

Unfortunately a defensive switch off cost us.

Think perch should have started instead of Bigi. Would’ve broken up play a bit more.

Simpson did well. Hba, marv, sissokho, Shola did good.

Cisse needs to learn the offside rule.

As good as moussa it. I still don’t understand why he is played in e 10 role.

Cabaye should be there as he is wasted sitting deep.

Let sissokho boss the middle with Cabaye and Marveaux, tiote or Anita.

Get Gouffran p, benny and cisse up top.

We have known all season that we lack goals in us.

W looked scared first half and rushed everything. We are also terrible off the ball. Our attacking players are better at keeping possession that’s our traditional midfielders. They create options where our cams do not.

  • 44 JAMSHA // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Try to beat us on ur xbox

  • 45 Bambams // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:19 PM

I dont think we did a lot wrong. The longer we went without scoring kept Benfica ‘ happy ‘ . If we had scored early maybe they would have attacked more rather than just play keep ball. Then when we attacked in the latter stages they just decided to defend. I hope this makes sense I know what I am trying to get over.

Anyway I think we did very well, benny could of hit the target …… But we all know our club, its Newcastle United and we always do it the hard way.

Again though just look what we CAN play like when we do attack.

  • 46 Marty-Toon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:19 PM

We’ve done the club proud with the way we’ve played in Europe this season especially when we’ve had a horrible PL season

But I can’t believe I saw them play a ball 40 yards and wilo to put it out of play even though there was no pressure around him.

  • 49 Tinman // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:19 PM

Big Pappa Cisse, that team looks excellent. Would much prefer a 4-3-3. I love attacking football. Also I think after much deliberation Sissoko is actually better in a deeper role.

  • 50 MUTINYbyLEMONS // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:20 PM

I like Mackem Warrior. Atleast he makes people say nice things about Newcaslte instead of always cursing ourselves. Tonight was so enjoyable and we almost went through. So close. Over the two tie we had many chances and in the end we have gone out beacuse of our own mistakes. We dominated Portuguese champions. Enough said

We had the momentum until Cabaye’s foul. We were making a chance a minute up till then after the goal.

  • 55 geordieracer1980 // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Catchy…we didn’t lose. We drew. Against an excellent team.

  • 56 ToonDownSouth // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:20 PM

It’s amazing that there’s any here now to be honest. European quarter final. Nothing else to be said really.

  • 57 Transfer Sage // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:21 PM

That’s where we just have a different view.

I think keeping it tight and just tryin to get a goal through steady build up or a set piece is a decent plan, especially if marv and benny aren’t fit enough for 90 mins.

We scored at 70 mins and had all the momentum….could easily have scored in those 20 minutes and gone through.

Not saying attacking from the start is wrong, but just that the way we went about it isn’t wrong either. More than one way to skin a cat.

  • 65 The next Mike Williamson // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:23 PM

Pardew has to take the blame for playing Bigi (a defensive midfielder) on the wing instead of Marveaux. Once again there’s only one person to blame. Played great once we had a few attacking players on the pitch.

  • 66 geordie066 // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:23 PM

ha ha today I told you that I’ll have the last laugh and boy did I loved it

  • 68 toonking // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:23 PM

if you think that pardew got his tactic spot well we should blame pardew for the team he chose in the first leg because that is when we should focus on defending and just bring on marvo late in that game for the away goal.

  • 69 Transfer Sage // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:24 PM

We didn’t need to score early though. When we scored we still had 20 mins and still made a few good chances, few better crosses and might have got one.

I agree attacking from the off could also work, but I disagree that our game plan couldn’t work. I think what we did was solid and if our best attacking players can’t play a full 90 what can you do?

  • 70 JDdubai // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:24 PM

    1. Thought we did well when we decided to attack, think he went too extreme though for the first 60 mins. Yes we had to be careful but it was too much for me. Why not just ask UEFA to start the match at 60 mins and be done with it…
2.showed we can compete with top teams, add a fit HBA, Colo, Debuchy, Santon, Saylor, Tiote, a fit Marveaux, Gouffran to this lot, plus 3 purples in the summer and we should be rocking next year.
3.Still think its unacceptable how many times Cisse is offside, its just laziness not getting back level with the defenders. Glad his scoring touch is returning tho.
4.overall feel disappointed as i thought benfica were there for the taking and dont think we did everything we could have tonight. Nevermind, no distractions for top 4 challenge for next season now….

  • 71 JAMSHA // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:24 PM

In fact, Willo’s sublime bit of South American leg dangling got Cabaye a FK in a great position. Who says the big man can’t play?!

  • 73 JackButler // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Half time was the time to change it for me, we needed to keep it tight for the first half which we did, but give the lads their heads for 45 min’s at least

  • 74 Tinman // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:25 PM

If Pardew got the tactics right why arent we in the semis? You cant argue against that. When we ‘kept it tight’ in the first half we could have easliy conceded two goals. Best form of defence is attack, always has been, always will be.

  • 75 soundoid // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:25 PM

Great warm up match agains’t the one of the top 10 sides in Europe. Now on to the game against one of the worst sides in the EPL lovely 😉

  • 76 Toon-Prodigy // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:25 PM

Excellent performance, really proud of all involved tonight.

Tactics were spot on and nearly pulled it off but for getting that killer second goal. So so close. We had our chances, It was set-up perfectly, we just could not get it.

With the players out injured we have, and the games coming thick and fast, to come so close to nicking it and stopping a 31 game unbeaten run is a great effort by all involved.

Now onto Sunderland, our players will be fresh, we will have bodys back and once again St James will be buzzing. Great to see Ben Arfa back.

If we can fit him and Marveux into an attacking trio we will be lethal.

Heres to a great finish to the season. Onwards & upwards.

Yeh – I’ve been surprised at Simmo – he’s getting forward more and gave a good account of himself.

Agree Bigi’s inexperience and lack of control showed, He’ll come good

I think Moussa will play box to box rather than No10 when Benny comes back full time.
And Guti ran and ran again.
Marv looked good – still not sure he can do iot over 90 mins but great impact sub.
Haidara was solid first half and impressive all round.

Bottom line is we are a mid table side at present. Top 6 next season with reinforcements

  • 79 geordie066 // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Tinman. Using best form of defence is attack lost newcastle a 12 point lead in the league once… you might have read about it in the paper.. the best form of defence is ball possession and composure.

  • 80 toonbrother // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:26 PM

pardew got it exactly right. the position we were in around the 85 minute mark was a very good one. only a one goal deficit and we had the momentum. They seeemed out on their feet we just couldnt deliver the killer blow. When you consider Benfica have not lost in aeons it was a very good performance by our boys. Only player i had a problem with was Anita. He just doesnt stamp any authority in midfield

  • 81 toonicle // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:30 PM

So many chances, all we needed was a bit of luck. I was really hoping Cabaye would put one of those free kicks in, 2 great opportunities for some magic from him. Gotta say he disappointed me tonight.
