Pardew – We Had Two Or Three Big Chances At 1-0

11:13 pm, Thursday, April 11th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 168 Comments

The Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was very rightly proud of his players after the game tonight – after his Newcastle United side put in a courageous and gutsy performance,  and we got very close to winning it 2-0.  Newcastle were 1-0 ahead after 71 minutes and  had the chances to go 2-0 up – but we just couldn’t get that second all important goal.

alan pardew after benfica game at home

Alan Pardew – being interviewed after the game

But two minutes into stoppage time Benfica broke away and scored – and 1-1 didn’t tell the story of this game – and you can hardly blame Newcastle for surging forward in stoppage time, because if we didn’t score a second goal, we were out in any case.

A very proud Alan Pardew had this to say after the game tonight to Ned Boulting of ITV:

“They are a good side – you can’t let them get a lead against you.” “In the first half we kept it tight and looked to nick a goal – and almost did that before half-time.”

“We had two or three big chances at 1-0, but you can’t ask for anything more from the crowd, the players.” “You’ve got to respect the opposition – technically they are a superb side.”

“I am so proud of the performance – we couldn’t have done any more.” “We’ve got some very good players – when we get them all back we’ve got a very good side.”

Alan is right that we have some great players,  and we only need two or three top players in the summer, and keep our players fitter next season, but that should be easier with the few games we’ll play, and we can be pushing for another top six position in the Premier League, and hopefully back into Europe the season after next.

That has to be the goal for next season.

And next time in Europe we will have hopefully learned that you cannot have a small squad when you have European games – and we had 14 of them this season.

And considering the injuries Newcastle have had this season – the lads did fantastically well in Europe.

Now to hammer Sunderland on Sunday.

Comments welcome.

i acknowledge the fact that their are better managers out their than pardew …. ..

but from what he has had to work with with all the injuries and ba leaving he has been trying… regardless of his mistakes and bad luck at times…

the only thing i can do is get behind my team…

  • 6 bollance // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:19 PM

There is no disputing our line up with all players back is a top side. Just hope we can hang on to all of them barring Colo who looks like he’ll be off.

Haidara has the potential to take Santon’s place next season. Great going forward and strong and fast in defence.

  • 7 Graeme // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:19 PM

I’ve supported TOOON for best part of 50 years, through all kinds of shit. Tonight, we gave it out best shot, against one of the best sides in the competition, and they just managed to scrape through.

I’m proud of my team and fully expect them to shaft the scum on Sunday!!

Anyone want two top tickets for the Europa final? lol

  • 8 JackButler // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:20 PM

    @catchy

Understand one thing mate, I’m no Pardew lover, but I’m also intelligent enough to understand that spouting off every day on a bloody blog isn’t going to change anything other than drive me to despair.

You constantly call for Pardew’s head as if you actually think that Ashley’s going to hear you and change the manager (funny how you never put up a realistic replacement though).

99% of us would replace him IF we could find the right man but we are not the owners of the club and we understand that sitting in our arm chairs calling for his head and slagging him and the players off will change absolutely nothing

i would have dropped this silly formation he is playing

    cisse is alone upfront

marv would have started for me, playing left side

cabaye would play higher up the pitch, prob behind cisse

    sissoko on the right

bigi in his DMC position with anita somewhere around him linking up,

jonas would not have been on the pitch

  • 22 pedro // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:25 PM

Yawn…the usual tripe on here I see. I could have written the responses to this game from so many people on here. Its all very well saying sack Pardew but in a many number of years how many good managers have we got in? Why would it be any different this time? The starting lineup was always going to get some flack from the Pardew bashers but I think how open we were when we had most our attacking options on showed Pardew’s thinking.

  • 29 rossc // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:27 PM

To everyone who’s is crazily saying that we should have attacked from the start…. please realise these few facts.
    1. The only advantage that we had going for us was the away goal.
    2. If Benfica also got an away goal, the tie was over.
    3. You can count on one hand the number of clean sheets we have had playing even moderately attacking football over 90 minutes this season.
    4. They were on a 30+ game unbeaten run.
    5. The only team to successfully do what we needed to do to win against, them was Barca-fuckin-lona.

Very proud of pardew, and even prouder of haidara for the way he came back without even skipping a beat, from his horrific injury.

  • 30 Tommyy // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:28 PM

Good game tonight! Unlucky not to go through in the end. Can’t fault that second half performance really.
Great that Ben Arfa got a few mins under his belt and looked sharp if a little porgy.
We have absolutely got to go with Debuchy, Haidara, Marveaux and Ben Arfa on Sunday, they just flow and would absolutely destroy Sunderland. If we line up defensive I’m going to have a hard time defending Pardew.

  • 31 kevymartins // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:28 PM

Also, are you for or against appointing di canio as manager?

  • 40 Tommyy // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:31 PM

The fact is Bramble was shite 7 years ago! Brown and O’Shea are just awful, Johnson has shown how overrated he is this season, Cattermole is slow, clumsy and dirty, Gardner is average, Larsson is ok and Fletcher is decent. The only good players at Sunderland are Sessegnon and Mignolet. That is it. Even Sessegnon only turns up once a month.

  • 41 JP...from The Rock // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:32 PM

    repost:

Transfer Sage- Is it really worth all the disruption it brings.

The bond with the player and manager is broken obviously and the new manager must gain the trust of all his players again.

The new manager might not play our favourite players and stick to the less prefered types like Willo, Perch etc.

The new manager might also play players out of position constantly and upset the balance of the team.

The new manager must know what it means to be a Newcastle manager, know the Premier league and be able to handle all the pressure it brings.

I am confident Pardew can bring us success. We have slowly been assembling an amazing team with just a few final adjustments in the summer. Soon we will be scaring the top 4 with our powerful young team staking our claim amongst the big boys and rubbing shoulders with them season after season.

  • 42 daztoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:32 PM

  • 43 NUFCarter // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:33 PM

I think we could give our youth team a chance on sunday and give all our U18′s a runout. Dont see why not. after all it is sunderland.

  • 44 Toon-Prodigy // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Excellent performance, really proud of all involved tonight.

Tactics were spot on and nearly pulled it off but for getting that killer second goal. So so close. We had our chances, It was set-up perfectly, we just could not get it.

With the players out injured we have, and the games coming thick and fast, to come so close to nicking it and stopping a 31 game unbeaten run is a great effort by all involved.

Now onto Sunderland, our players will be fresh, we will have bodys back and once again St James will be buzzing. Great to see Ben Arfa back.

If we can fit him and Marveux into an attacking trio we will be lethal.

Heres to a great finish to the season. Onwards & upwards.

    HTL!

    Catchy

When will you understand that just because people are happy enough with certain performances, and think he’s doing some good things, doesn’t make them wrong.

Some people just happen to disagree with you, get over it.

As for the game plan, I though it was executed perfectly. We wanted to contain them and then push them hard, even in the first 70 mins we could still have nabbed that extra goal, plus Cisse and Shola seemed to combine excellently which is a big plus.

Proud of how the lads stuck to the task, would I have wanted to see Marv and HBA on a little earlier? Sure. Would I have liked to see us get more up in Benfica’s face? Most definitely.

But Pardew had a game plan, the players executed it to perfection and we nearly came out with the result we wanted. I’ve no issues with the performance at all.

  • 62 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:43 PM

    Catchy

Well that is another issue entirely, one that I happen to think has some merit.

We did show Benfica too much respect, but we still contained them, we just got caught by a sucker punch.

Had Cisse bent his run better at the end of the first half, we’d have been 1-0 up, had Ben Arfa taken that chance when he turned inside we’d have gotten to 2-0, defended for the rest of the game and not conceded and have gone through.

So even with Pardew’s plan, we still had enough of the game to win it. Benfica never carved us open properly until the goal so whether we agree with his plan or not it still could have got us the result.

Against weaker teams though, we definitely should press high and try to destroy them.

Agree – I loved the roller coaster ride of last season. Devastated at our first loss even then. Some outstanding performances – Manure at home and WBA away come to mind. Some dire results too mind but that is the Toon. We went backwards this season not because Pards suddenly became useless after being manager of the season – we have had a terrible season for all sorts of reasons and Europa quarters is pretty damn good. Beaten by bad luck and a better team tonight.

Would love it to have a good run now and finish in top ten. No point arguing with Catchy he WANTS us to lose – typical WUM.

Would rather have seen us go through and then lose to Sunderland. I believe we can stay up anyway, even if we lose to Sunderland (which we won’t). We could’ve won 2-0 tonight. Ben Arfa was very close to scoring at the end.

Think Cabaye deserves dropping. His performances haven’t been good enough. Marveaux looked classy when he came on. He passing and ball control was immense.

My team for Sunderland would be:

    Krul

    Debuchy Perch Mbiwa Haidara

    Anita/Tiote

    Ben Arfa Sissoko Marveaux Gutierrez

    Cisse

I also think Mbiwa needs to improve his decision making. He keeps making silly errors at the back and gives the ball away. All he has to do is the simple pass.

If we played good football and lose ill take it. If we play shitty and win ill take it. But when we play shitty over and over again and lose, my patience is gone. Pardew will never have this team play to there full potential, surely you must agree with that? Last season and 5th place was GREAT, but we did not play good football.

  • 78 NUFC_LEAZES END // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:47 PM

Just got back from the game, it was a poor first half quality second half.
The atmosphere picked up in the LEAZES corner level 7 after the first goal fantastic atmosphere after that aswell, gutted we had 2 disallowed goals.
Pardew has every right to be proud of the players apart from Williamson and Simpson, they simply must be shifted in the summer

    come on

benfica, started with there star players on the bench,, he set his team up to let us play and catch us on the counter,,

pardew played to hold onto the ball in the first half, then come out and attack in the second half, of which we did from 70 mins on

other than free kicks we never loaded the box with players,, which i find amazing when your playing a game needing to win it,, why ?
only the last 20 mins , now that is quite shocking

He doesn’t play the same way all the time you just like to believe he does because it suits your same tired argument. Why are you not proud of how we played tonight?

  • 112 alex84 // Apr 12, 2013 at 12:07 AM

Well I think you can only really judge Pardew when he has the players at his disposal to play the way you think we should, coz his hands have been tied with all the injuries we have had, Marv didn’t start coz he his needed to start on sunday and with his previous record for injuries I can see why. Thought Anita had a good 1st half, moved the ball well.

this is how highly i rate our team right now,,

other than van pers, rodny, carrick, viddic, i think we have a better squad than man u, i think if fergy had our team, he would be flying with it,

i think we lack a good fast forward

i think we could field a great midfield, not far behind man c and chelsea,

i think now we have mbiwa, colo taylor santon debuchy, we have the making of a great defence

just we have a guy, that does not see the potential in what he has

thats including ober, simmo n willo we’ve eventually upgraded them (well apart from ober) but arfa if he was fit would have been there anyways we were never set for this seasons set up!
and that lies at the summer window full stop!
we could all see the annoyance from pardew agree transfer??
now pardew has actually got close to the team he wants to build and play, you want him gone when by bad luck n i mean bad luck has ravenged his opportunity to play his best team just ONCE!!!

Areet lads how we all doing? Calls for Pardews head started yet? If so those lads can take a running jump off the Tyne bridge!!!
No doubt the likes of catchy and his crew have been on b1tching etc but they just don’t have a clue!

Just got back from the game and have to say am immensely proud of the lads and pardew tonight, and to be a supporter of this club the fans were fantastic even after the benfica goal they were still chanting the lads on, was a fantastic night on Tyneside regardless of the result

Just thought I’d give me thoughts on the match tonight!

    Krul
Pulled off some world class saves tonight absolutely top draw, well except for his David James moment in the first half!!!

    Simmo
Was absolutely solid tonight, really shocked me played a blinder at the back and linked up well going forward, could he be trying to play for an improved contract on Tyneside?!?!

    Willo
The odd hoofball but was like simmo solid at the back cleared every ariel threat broke down play and even played some football on the deck, had a job to do and done it well, great display from the forgotten man!

    Yanga
Another great display a few small errors but gave everything this lad is going to be some player for us next season!

    Hiadara
Close call for MOTM for me, gave absolutely everything he had, he defended he attacked he was just fantastic didn’t shy away from the occasion, santon has got a job on to keep his LB spot! Blinding performance

    Bigi
For me, he was the only disappointment tonight, I think the gravity of the occasion got to him, he was nervous his touches were heavy his passing was off , good little player but tonight just wasn’t for him

    Anita
Decent enough played well with the ball on the floor found a few tidy little passes played well

    Cabs
Poor cabs looked knackered tonight!!! No questioning his commitment like grafted his nuts off for the full 90 really taken to his new role as leader and gave 110% toon hero already!

    Socks
What an engine this lad has, never stopped running! Grafts all game creates some great chances just a very special player thought he brilliant tonight and lead the push at the death do unlucky to get caught out for there goal

    Guti
Can’t say enough about him at the moment, he’s had a new lease of life and looks a top player again, brilliant again tonight done everything anyone could of asked of him and more, brilliant tonight

    Cisse
Grafted hard again played well linked up well got his goal but seriously needs to learn the offside rule!!!

    HBA
Great to see him back, couldn’t miss him though ;)
He got the crowd going, he got the team going and was unlucky with his chance but yeah he looked lively when he came on and defo started to make things happen

    Marv
Not sure how fit he was, but guessing that’s why he didn’t start!
Once again fantastic tonight tortured there backline, controlled midfield bought a bit precision to our play, with him and benny in the team the mackems could be in serious trouble!!!

    Shola
Has his critics but played a great game tonight, kept the ball alive for cisse’s goal, won nearly all the ariel battles, held the ball up and generally bullied there back line!

    Pardew
Got it spot on tonight for me apart from bigi but set the team up right made the right changes and generally had the lads up for it, we’ll done pards!!!

  • 120 irishtoon999 // Apr 12, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Just got in from the match and what a game.

Though the result didn’t go our way, I’m full of praise for the lads AND Pardew.

Pards, first half you could tell that he was playing for the 0-0 at half time, once Shola came on it started to open up and we really began to get going.

The team, mainly in the second half, played like Galatasaray did earlier in the week. And I Said if the team play with the passion and fight that they did I’ll be happy, they delivered.

Willo did ok, did what was needed.

Now if we play with that tempo, fight, determination, the mackems really need to worry. Fantastic to see Benny back too! Looks a big biffy mind!

  • 146 Jackel001 // Apr 12, 2013 at 12:37 AM

Pards has had one fantastic season (some say with luck) and one shite season (with obvious injuries) now providing we keep all our “star” men i.e Cabaye, Sissoko etc I will judge him fully by the end of next season ( IF he hasn’t been sacked or whatever ) and tbh most people should give him a chance ffs.

He looked in much better shape this evening than he was against Anzhi.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the latest injury set back was a concoction by the club, i.e Pards being fuming about the weight gain and saying “we’re going to say you’ve had a set back, now go and lose a stone before you’re allowed near the team”

    Just my thoughts.

  • 150 Cisse's Big Toe // Apr 12, 2013 at 12:47 AM

  • 151 The Bishop // Apr 12, 2013 at 12:50 AM

No complaints about the team selection today. If Marveaux had started today he wouldn’t have been able to start against Sunderland (when was the last time he played 90 minutes consecutively?) hopefully by the start of next season, with a solid end to this one, his body will be able to cope with the rigours of the Premier League. I think he’s done astonishingly well to finally get back to the level of performance he was at before his two years of injury, if not the level of fitness. Can’t see Hatem Ben Arfa starting at the weekend though, hopefully more of the same as a substitute if that transpires to be.

  • 152 manxpie // Apr 12, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Marv needs to given a run playing the no 10 position

  • 158 santonthenewmaldini // Apr 12, 2013 at 1:01 AM

I actually thought Williamson had a decent game today apart from a couple of aimless hoofs he looked comfortable playing with Mbiwa also Simpson played excellent tonight (Did i just say that!!?)his only downfall is his final ball but he is doing everything else could be training with Debuchy has made him realise what is needed at fullback?Would like him to sign a deal if he would be happy to try fight for his place

I wonder though why when we get a free kick in our own half do we let Krul take them?He has the worst delivery out of our team!!

Would have liked to have seen us attack a bit earlier if only Santon and Taylor had not have made those mistakes we would have got through!!

I tell you though we cant sell Arfa in the summer at any costs if he is fit cause once everyone is fit we will give most teams a proper game

I think we will actually pound Sunderland on Sunday if Arfa and Marveux are on the pitch at the same time and then we can give Cabaye a rest for a game or 2 because he is totally ruined I know cause he is the captain now he wants to play all the time but he is way off the boil

    Terencelim

On another day we’d have beat them 4-0 so in terms of gameplay yeah we did in my opinion

I think you’re right about Cabaye, he’s picked up so many knocks and little niggles this season. I think Pardew should perhaps give him a rest when Tiote’s back, see how a midfield combination of Tiote and Anita works. Or perhaps Cabaye will be alright anyway without the Europa League games to contend with.

We are just not Good enough ! period . Unless we get rid of AP, we will NOT win anything.

  • 163 kevymartins // Apr 12, 2013 at 1:15 AM

I myself also thought williamson played the best game he ever has for us but just one thing that pisses me off

when the ball get’s cleared 40 yards up the pitch there is someone 7 yards behind him and he headers it out for a throw in..He may call it playing it safe but he really needs to work on that.

ohh true toon please shut up man.

  • 165 The Bishop // Apr 12, 2013 at 1:22 AM

I think that Williamson can do a job if called upon out of necessity, such as today, but in the long run I think he will probably move on. Technically as a defender, and not just as an athlete, I don’t think he’s quite at the top 8 Premier League level. I would hasten to congratulate him today however, because it was undoubtedly his best game this season. (I do recall him putting in a few great performances last season when Taylor was injured)

  • 166 Scotttoon // Apr 12, 2013 at 1:23 AM

Just back in from celebrating a real gutsy performance from the Toon. Really proud especially with 2nd half. We had a really good technical side on the ropes for the whole of 2nd half, and we should be proud of that.

Yes a bit disappointed Marv especially didn’t get longer. He, along with Benny were unlocking their defence from word go. With the injured/cup tied players back we really do have a team capable of achieving top 6 and maybe even some cup silverware next season. Enough of the negative comments, we have reason to be proud as I am. We gave it a damned good go and fell just short to an exceptional side, no shame in that.

If we play with that same vigour and determination against the Mackems and we’ll run away with it Sunday. Be proud of our club people. Boys done is proud.

Blows my mind that anyone could be negative. We were one chance and one goal away from the semis. Th tactics tonight were spot on. Credit Benfica for not succumbing to the onslaught and proving their class where many have buckled.

The damage was done in Portugal and we knew that. The fact we came so close to an upset is testimony to the players and staff.

Our squad is strong and our starting eleven very strong. Sunday I a tough game but we should have enough to overcome the unwashed. Should that happen I genuinely believe we can look to next season with optimism as our pool is good and we will spend this summer.

  • 168 toonhamu // Apr 12, 2013 at 3:17 AM

Everything was there tonight. NUFC was a unit from the dugout, the pitch to the stands.
The worst part about this all is that aye we could’ve avoided two goals at their place, but tonight, we were so close. Whether it was Cisse delaying his run a second, Cabaye being his usual, brilliant self, or Benny having that match fitness/touch.
Pardew played a blinder, tactics & subs were spot on. Just like Galatasary in midweek, we’ve gone out with our dignity well intact.
I was actually a little disappointed in the naivety of the officials, letting the Benfica lads stay down for ages, something which wasn’t truly reflected in the amount of added time we’d got but heyho, we rest up & ready ourselves for a big game Sunday.
