Who Was Your Man Of The Match In 1-1 Draw With Benfica?

10:07 pm, Thursday, April 11th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 42 Comments

Make no mistake – Newcastle put in a courageous effort at trying to get through to the simi-finals of the Europa League tonight and went ahead after 71 minutes through Papiss Cisse, after he had scored twice but both were flagged for offide.

And Newcastle had Benfica completely rattled as they pressed and pressed for what could have been the winning goal formn newcatsle but deep into injury time – would you believe it – Benfica equalized in a breakaway two minutes into stoppage time, as they caught Newcastle short at the back and Eduardo Salvio put the ball into the net to kill the game.

This was a magnificent performance from the Newcastle side tonight, and they did almost everything right and had Benfica seriously rattled in the last 25 minutes of this game.

proud of the lads today. |Pardew’s strategy was spot on.we just a bit unlucky + we faced a genuinely good side.

  • 2 Fridge // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Pardew leaves it too late. Dont understand the approach. Pardew go …..

  • 3 do the hatem shake // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:09 PM

good match great effort from the lads all subs worked if we play like that for the season top 10 finish….

  • 4 hugotoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Credit to Simpson, he had a brilliant game.

  • 5 DevonMag // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Pardew got his tactics spot on for me. Nearly had ‘em! Recruitment drive in the summer and a fresh crack at the league with a full compliment of decent players and we should have ourselves a great season next year. Reckon we’ll be a real force!
Now for the Mackems. Come on lads, pick yaselfs up and tear ‘em a new one.

  • 6 hugenufcfan // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Very frustrated. y the hell did pardew leave out marveaux. Completed stupid tactics. lok at their subs after we scored. Sent in 2 attackers. What would v have done.
    I’m so angry at pardew

  • 7 Bambams // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Maps was brilliant, one missed tackle but so happy we have him.

Krul solid, Benny warmed up and Cisse looks possesed…..

Take a bow boys….. Look what we can do when we attack with offensive players !

  • 8 Constanstine // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:11 PM

We were clearly out of luck since the first leg. Yet, our side managed to kept Benfica and the whole SJP on their toes.HWTL!

  • 9 Fridge // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Spot on? Yeah lets try and score two goals with 25 min left without conceding. So if when Benfica scores there is no time left. Ridicoulus

  • 10 stuart no9 // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:12 PM

first half not great – better 2nd half , but as pards must know by now, you have to play for 90 mins.

  • 11 Gleese // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Very proud of pardew and the lads…did everything right and were desperately unlucky in the end. Credit to the tactics spot on…if we had attacked them all night they would have definitely caught us on the break at some point and then the game would have been dead! We had them rattled and as gutted as I am i cant fault anything…I think we should all be very proud of them!!! :)

  • 12 TheToonKing // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:12 PM

We’ve been really really unlucky this season. We could be in the semi-s had Santon passed to the left instead of the right.

At this level it’s the smallest things that decide it.

Good effort today, Pardew got it right, Cisse still needs a brain, but good game.

Benfica were not better then an injury ridden Newcastle.

  • 13 Cape_Toon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

I applauded the fellas throughout this game, we really threatened a dangerous Benfica!
All I know is, if the lads can bring this form to SJP on Sunday, then we should slay the Mackems big time! Ben Arfa’s presence makes such a difference…

  • 14 JAMSHA // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

    voted for jonas

  • 15 hugenufcfan // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

And someone needs to explain the offside role to cisse. I mean is he really that dumb. Every single match he’s like 5-6 times off and some of them are propa goal scoring chances look at today.

  • 16 Fridge // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

I just wished pardew would have tryed it sooner. He took a big gamble and lost, unfortunately.

  • 17 yo-yo // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Tactically well called by Alain de Pardieu. We rode our luck first half as they really came at us. They didn’t let us play at all and we were nervy. But we held out. They were really good down their left side.
We are still a mid table side and have overperformed in Europe as we have underperformed in the league.. bring on the unwashed. HWTL

  • 18 internationaltoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:15 PM

Devastated for the results but proud of the lads. Voted for Cisse because he scored and showed real passion tonight and although he was caught offside too many times I thought he was unlucky not to have scored the two last week.

  • 19 toonbrother // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:15 PM

@fridge you wont find a bigger critic of pardew than me on these pages. Fact is we played a controlled match and shifted gears when it mattered. Just unlucky we couldnt get that second goal like we deserved. Man of the match for me : Papis Cisse

  • 20 Hatem Ben Hutley // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

Gotta give Pardew respect here. He said all along 0-0 at 70 minutes and its all to play for – He understood we wouldn’t last 90 minutes of pure attacking football, and we wouldn’t stand a chance against the counter with tired legs. We did our best to shut them out then go for it in the last 20, brilliant sub with Marveaux and Ben arfa is back too! Good job despite the result

  • 21 toonbrother // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

ooh ooh i retract that. Jonas definitely man of the match followed by cisse

  • 22 internationaltoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Benfica a team with great quality however and credit to them even though it breaks my heart.
Pardew got the tactics right, but needs to find a replacement for Gutierrez

  • 23 hugenufcfan // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:17 PM

I can see a dip in quality of cabayes crosses and corners. Not sure whats happened tio him. Hope he’s over his depression

  • 24 martoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Fridge – do you know anything about football? Tactics were spot on – stop Benfica scoring and then go for it in the last 20 mins – we were alway going to be susceptable to a breakaway goal but at least we tried – good effort.

  • 25 Grumpy // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:19 PM

lost the tie in the first leg

  • 26 hugenufcfan // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:19 PM

Martoon – since u sem to be an expert in tactics, whats the point of not starting marveuax

  • 27 toonicle // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Did our best, nothing to be ashamed of after that game. If Santon hadn’t given the ball away in the first leg…..Sigh

  • 28 geordiemark // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:22 PM

ive gone for cissie he never stopped aye he was offside a few times but he had a great game well done lads

  • 29 Black and White with an army lol // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:24 PM

    jonas first, cisse second

  • 30 matias // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Jonas for me again for doing very solid job.

What a mouthwatering thought it is to have all these lads gel a bit better with time. Cabaye and Sissoko weren`t really at it tonight.

Very hard to see Anita and Bigi getting much game time in near future.

Oh and Pardew IMO got it absolutely right with this gamble of keeping Arfa and Marv on the bench until the last half an hour. With early goal Benfica would have put their big guns on early.

  • 31 Goodfella // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:25 PM

Went for haidara after what he’s been through and to play like that! Looking forward to when he’s fully settled. Once again hats off to Carr.

  • 32 Fridge // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:26 PM

? Do you? Why not at least have players on the pitch earlier or from the start. Yeah i know nothing. Benfica had chanses in the first half. We did not. What then if they scored then. The pundits slaughtered Newcastle in the first half.

  • 33 martoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:26 PM

hugenufcfan – quite simple, Marveaux got a knock at the end of the last game and could not have played the whole match bringing him and HBA on for the last 20 minutes was the best way to use them – and it nearly worked.

  • 34 martoon // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:28 PM

Fridge – all I’ll say is most people on this blog and the pundits generally agree they were the right tactics.

  • 35 Fridge // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:34 PM

I disagree. Will just have to agree to disagree. Im just sad we didnt go through to the semis. Hopefully will have a win on sunday.

  • 36 rossc // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:49 PM

Personally think Pardew got it spot on with what we had.
He was looking at the bigger picture, the end of the fulham game we had about four players pulling up with cramp, players that have been called on to produce more and more often due to europe and all the injuries.
Play Marveaux for the full 90 and he’ll be dead by the 70th minute and tired for the sunday game. Same with Ben Arfa.
Get young Bigi and anita to work the first half and it gave us a chance in both this game and equally as importantly the sunderland match.
Spot on pardew, had ben arfas shot gone in we would have all been singing his name to the rafters!

  • 37 lesh // Apr 11, 2013 at 10:57 PM

Only saw the second half and based on his performance and assuming it was much the same in the first, my vote’s gone to Cisse.

Ok so we lost the game but if we play like we did tonight on Sunday, the mackems won’t know what’s hit them.

  • 38 Sav // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:13 PM

Don’t want to be harsh on |Big Mike. He had to have been rusty. But you’d swear the ball had a fizzing fuse sticking out of it. I’m afraid we need better players than that to improve on where we are.

  • 39 Toonfan_Ew Ew // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:48 PM

People calling for Pardew’s head after tonight’s game? Really?…
I was at the game tonight and I haven’t seen an atmosphere like that in so long. Electric, especially after Cisse’s goal and when HBA came on.
For MOM, I voted Haidara. I can’t remember him putting a foot wrong and he looked so good down the left. We have such a player in him, and it’s mad to think he’s still only 20.
Admittedly was worried seeing Willo starting. It’s worrying seeing players run at him, but saying that and minus his erratic punts up field every now and again, I thought he played decent (as did Jonas and Simmo). He won most of his aerial challenges. He just lacks composure so bad.
Cisse really frustrates me, as he does with everyone. You’d think having been caught offside for the best part of a season now, he would show some signs of improvement but I fail to see any. Yes, he scored tonight, but it’s unbelievable how many times he’s caught offside. Don’t get me wrong, the passion he has is second to none and he scores the important goals for us but apart from that what else does he offer?
It is also fantastic to see HBA back. That maze-y run for the goal was just tantalizing. Let’s hope that’s him back to full fitness now.
Lastly, I like Benfica. Fantastic team and great support. I wouldn’t mind seeing them go all the way so good luck to them.

  • 40 Grumpy // Apr 11, 2013 at 11:54 PM

Cisse was offside a lot true but if anyone can remember a certain Fillipo Inzagi then being offside is not so bad.

  • 41 reccerobbo // Apr 12, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Haidara for me thought he put in a cracking shift until substituted.

  • 42 toonhamu // Apr 12, 2013 at 3:28 AM

Voted for Simmo, thought he was brilliant tonight. I know footballers get stick for this & that, & I know he’s had his fair share from us – but to see a lad who knows he’s probably out the door in a couple of months put his absolute all into the match tonight was great to see. A few more performances like that before Debuchy & he’d be getting the deal he wanted.
Haidara was brilliant too, really exciting to see him holding his own at such a level.
Got to say, Cabaye was disappointing, with Mapou also looking a little shakey at times – pre-season will do him the world of good to toughen him up/improve his touch.
One last point on Pardews tactics, can’t believe people are saying he left it too late, with 25 to go we had everyone on which was a risk considering Benny’s freshly back & Marv’s carrying a knock. We gave it our best shot, no blame to be shouldered by anyone affiliated with NUFC. Have to say the officiating was completely wet at times, play-acting/simulation is something I won’t miss watching next season when our Thursday nights are quiet again.
